Expert Review

Overall Rating

The XC90 T8 holds a powerful twin-charged engine and an electric motor under its hood. The combo offers engaging acceleration. The brakes are not satisfying this time and feel terrible on some pathways. Notably, the top-of-lineup T8 engine is backed by a plug-in battery pack. Churning out 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque, this plug-in hybrid offers good power delivery to boast about.

The interior, on the other hand, offers great design and comfort. The seats are undoubtedly good but disappoint with the riding impact. The engine noise is again unpleasing and you can hear it clearly. However, there are several major improvements to the suspension and standard equipment setup, but there's still some room for more refinement.

2020 Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid SUV Features

8.0/10

The Volvo XC90 PHEV is offered in only one engine option in the hybrid option. Though it does have the regular trims named Momentum, R-design, and Inscription. The T8 eAWD Plug-in Hybrid gets a similar engine as the T6 but adds an extra 87-horsepower electric motor along with a battery. The total power output turns out to be 400 hp and 472 lb-ft.

A 240-volt Level 2 charger is capable of charging the battery in about 2.5 hours, and the EPA rates the pure-electric running range at 17 miles. The T8 also comes equipped with a tire repair kit as a part of temporary spare and tools.

We Recommend

If we were to choose, we'd like to recommend Volvo XC90’s highest trim level, the T8 Excellence, it won’t be a desirable fit for most buyers. Therefore, skipping the crystal glasses and backseat refrigerator, we would go with the midlevel T8 Inscription instead. It comes fitted with the base Momentum's features, along with a 14-speaker premium audio system, ambient lighting, ventilated front seats and upgraded leather upholstery. The Luxury package comes priced modestly and adds front seat massaging features along with a heated steering wheel.

2020 Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid SUV Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The XC90 T8 is offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, attached to an inline-four twin-charged engine with an electric motor to propel a combined 400 horsepower. Combining an inline-four with an electric motor helps a lot in the kind of torque the car can produce and here it is in abundance with 472 pound-feet. It feels pretty quick when compared to the XC90's gasoline-powered models. The 10.4 kWh lithium-ion battery can propel the car 19 miles with electric-only mode, all that distance in least noise.

The BMW X5 xDrive 40e falls behind on the power output front. The competition is far ahead with GLE producing 436hp just trailing behind is the Cayenne with 416 horses. The XC90 is quick for sure at 400 hp but the dynamics the German vehicles have, are incomparable here. Porsche turns out to be the best driving car.

How fast is the Volvo XC90 Hybrid?

The SUV has shown decent acceleration figures despite its size. The XC90 can sprint to 60 MPG in 7.5 seconds. However, other competitors are way faster in this regard. The Merc GLE turns out to be the fastest with 5.2 seconds, followed by Porsche Cayenne. The best thing about the XC90 SUV is its calm and composed ride quality. It offers smooth cruising on any kind of terrain. The optional four-corner air suspension (on spending extra $1,800 option in momentum and inspiration) further improves the ride quality. However, complete noise cancellation isn't available with air suspension equipped XC90.

How are Volvo XC90 Hybrid brakes?

All the four wheels of Volvo XC90 T8 come with steel disc brakes. The brake pedal is soft and inspires confidence while driving through rough terrain or highways. The SUV offers a braking distance of 113 feet (60 mph to halt). Also, all 2020 XC90 comes standard with automatic emergency braking.

2020 Volvo XC90 Plug in Hybrid Front Brake is 13.2 in.

For an SUV to stop at 113 ft. is phenomenal. But being at 5059 pounds and others being heavier on their feet. The Mercedes might not be up to the mark. The Porsche has quite a lot of feel on those brake pads because it is based on a sportscar pedigree than an off-roader. The biggest car is the lightest here, the Volvo. And the brakes coupled with the automation and the ride quality Volvo has up its sleeve, makes the XC90 shine again.

2020 Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid SUV Fuel Economy

4.0/10

Those folks at Volvo definitely were quite serious about fuel efficiency when they decided to install a small four-cylinder into the large XC90. The XC90 is just marginally more efficient than the competitor even in most efficient guise. That's a real disappointment considering that XC90 also has compromised performance and engine refinement compared to the rivals.

There's only combined data that we can compare with and clearly the Volvo is the most impressive here with 27 miles in a single gallon of gasoline with X5 the second best thanks to the Inline-4 both the cars get. The Mercedes and the Porsche has an economy of 21 and 22 mpg respectively.

2020 Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid SUV Interior

8.0/10

The XC90's interior offers amazing space and features. Right from the attractive options to the material quality, we only wish that there were more cars of this kind. The third row doesn't offer much space. However, it manages to offer more legroom than some of its prominent rivals. Available as an option, the XC90 has either two or four massaging seats on offer, a rear-seat beverage cooler, a crystalline shifter knob, and handcrafted Swedish-crystal tumblers.

There's a panoramic sunroof available as standard across the range. The XC90 SUV offers best in class headroom in the segment. As per Volvo, there's equal importance to all the occupants. The Porsche Cayenne is swathed in good materials, the inspiration obviously flowing down from Panamera but that centre console does eats out on space. Teutonic cousins BMW and Mercedes-Benz do their usual good but XC90 and Porsche just throw the water out of the park.

How much cargo space does the Volvo XC90 provide?

The Volvo XC90`s exemplary exterior styling has turned out to be plus point by offering best in class luggage space across the lineup. With all three seats up, the XC90 offers a cargo volume of 16 cubic feet shared with Audi Q7. With the second row folded, the capacity increases to 42 cubic feet '3 marginally greater than the Audi Q7 (41 cubic feet).

2020 Volvo XC90 Plug in Hybrid Cargo space is 85.7 cu ft.

When all rows are folded, the XC90 can accommodate all of your luggage with 86 cubic feet of luggage volume. The lowering of rear end for convenient loading of luggage is further facilitated by the optional air suspension. Volvo just obliterates the competition here with the kind of space it has. It almost goes upto the GLS and the Q7.

8.0/10

The Volvo XC90 follows the tradition by offering tasteful design keeping a minimalist approach. The crisp and sharp design elements add more refinement to the SUV. Dimension wise, the XC90 SUV offers a bold stance on the road. Details like Thor's hammer DRL Led pattern which just makes it looks ruthless and menacing when seen in the night. The swoopy taillight design makes all the Volvos have a very distinct and unmistakable look and XC 90 is no different.

The Porsche has the sporty soft-roader like looks and the curvy haunches and the lines might impress you. With Mercedes-Benz going on to the sharp and still a very subtle design language doesn't make it lose the charm the Benzes always had. Swedish peeps have created Volvo a fortune with the new design language they are right now and the XC 90 justify it just by doing nothing.

Volvo XC90 Hybrid vs Mercedes-Benz GLE 550e 4matic

Luxury, safety and build quality, these are the three pillars on which the GLE hybrid was made. Volvo could have saved a few its sales by lowering the price-tag but what you get in this price tag is an SUV that is made by a brand known for the safety its vehicle provides to the passengers. It depends on you how you want to spend your 60 grand, Volvo or Mercedes.

2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 550e 4matic

Volvo XC90 Hybrid vs Porsche Cayenne e-Hybrid

The Porsche Cayenne was one of the first serious road-going SUVs than an off-roader itself. With such great road holding characteristics, this car is the one to look for if you have to fulfill that driver's dreams. Being E-hybrid doesn't leave you with any less power though. Whereas XC 90 doesn't feel up with paces when it is put through some. The Cayenne manages all this with ease. The XC 90 sure spoils you with creamy premium-ness but it just drips over its vehicle dynamics.

2020 Porsche Cayenne e-Hybrid

Volvo XC90 Hybrid vs BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance

BMW is one of the finest manufacturers in the Sedan and SUV market and the arrival of X5 depicts that they are all set to nail the hybrid segment as well. With X5 they are now targeting both SUV and hybrid segment. With an attractive price tag, it definitely puts XC90 hybrid buyers in a mood of skepticism.

2020 BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance

2020 Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid SUV Final Verdict

The XC90’s ride turns out to be stiffer with the larger 20-inch wheels, and the available powertrain options. Getting the smaller 19-inch wheels offers better ride quality, but it's worth noting most rivals in the class are good at absorbing road bumps. Despite all these flaws, there remains more to enjoy with the 2020 Volvo XC90. It's already attractive inside and out, well-equipped and certainly worth a test drive.
