"Supremely elegant and technologically advanced, the 2021 Volvo XC90 is one of the most desirable mid-size luxury crossovers. Volvo loves to promote its safety-conscious image and makes it real by packing its lone three-row SUV with copious standard driver assists." - Car And Driver

The latest iteration of the XC90 is offered with a choice of two different powertrains, T5 and T6. Both engines use the same 2.0L inline 4-cylinder, only, the powertrain in T5 models is just turbocharged. The T6 models get a turbocharger and a supercharger to bump up the performance. For the 2021 model year, the carmaker has decided to make several features standard on the XC90 for an MSRP of $49,000.

2021 Volvo XC90 Engine and Performance

8.1/10

"Drivetrain choices center around a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that's either turbocharged, turbocharged, and supercharged, or employing both of those forced induction methods while being part of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system. This latter drivetrain has been named Recharge for the 2021 XC90." - KBB

The 2021 Volvo XC90 is offered with a choice between two different powertrains. The base Volvo XC90, or the T5 models, is equipped with a 2.0L Turbo I-4 Engine. With 250 horses under its hood and 258 pound-feet of torque, it comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

2021 Volvo XC90 offers a 2.0L inline-4 engine in as many as three different configurations

You have the option of a twin-charged motor on the T6 models that delivers 316 horsepower and 295 torque output. The only Drivetrain available with T6 is AWD. But the choice of transmission remains unchanged. On the T8 or Recharge models, the same motor is paired to an 11.6 kWh battery.

Here, the Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 puts out the most power on the chart and its unique 9-speed shifter works flawlessly with both engine options. The Volvo XC90 and Jaguar F-Pace also perform well with 250 and 247 horsepower respectively. The 2021 Volvo XC90 with base engine takes 7.5 seconds to leap from 0-60 mph and crosses the quarter-mile marker in just under 15.7 seconds.

2021 Volvo XC90 accelerates from 0-60 MPH in just 7.5 seconds

With the T6 engine, the 2021 Volvo XC90 can sprint to 60 mph from a standstill in 6.1 seconds and complete a quarter-mile in just under 15.2 seconds. The Jaguar F-Pace with the quickest 6.7 seconds run isfollowed by the Audi Q7. But the braking performance of the 2021 Volvo XC90 is one of its strong points. It comes to a complete halt from 60 mph in just 113 feet.

2021 Volvo XC90 Fuel Economy

7.1/10

The Volvo XC90 T5 equipped with the 250 hp 2.0LTurbo Premium I-4 engine is rated 25 mpg combined. That translates to a city and highway fuel economy of 21 and 30 respectively, which is above average for the class. If you opt for T6 Powertrain, then the combined figures drop down by 3 mpg.

The Volvo XC90 can offer up to 25 mpg in mixed driving conditions

It has been rated with city, highway, and combined mileage of 19, 28, and 22, in that order. Certainly, even these numbers are not bad considering its twin-charged setup. Still, with the smaller 18.8 gallons tank, the Volvo can manage to provides a combined range of 470 miles and a highway range of 564 miles.

The 2021 Volvo XC90 is offered with a blend of luxurious and premium interior. It provides up to 7 seats for the occupants and each row is well-spaced. The third row is more preferable for the children. One can enhance the luxurious cabin with a captain’s chair that reduces the capacity to six occupants.

Jumping on the table we observe that in the front row, the best passenger volume is offered by the Audi Q7. However, the best trunk space is offered by Jaguar F-Pace, and the Volvo XC90 follows it. But overall, it is the Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 that turns up as the most accommodating SUV. It also offers decent infotainment inside the vehicle, loaded with plenty of infotainment features.

2021 Volvo XC90 carries over the same infotainment setup as last year

In the front, it has a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The unit is easily comprehensible as it displays clear images and large texts. It is also fairly easy to operate and the responsiveness of the screen makes things a lesser task. Even visibility under direct sunlight is appreciable, which is always a good thing. Highlighted infotainment features of the 2021 Volvo XC90 include:

  •  Apple CarPlay and AutoPlay

"The 2021 Volvo XC90 is the biggest vehicle in Volvo's lineup, serving up three rows of Swedish luxury. It's an attractive crossover that's instantly recognizable as a Volvo, serving as the flagship that led the brand's revival a few years back." - Autoblog

The 2020 Volvo XC90 came with an aggressive appearance. The 2021 model is going to look the same. It is one of the true-looking SUV vehicles in the market with its elegant styling. In the front, it has a rectangular grill with a simple straight aliment and a Volvo badge attached in the middle.

2021 Volvo XC90 boasts new wheel designs to keep things looking fresh

From the side, it looks like how an SUV should, thanks to its upright pillars. Each of the trim rides on 19-inch wheels as standard but 21-inch wheels have also been provided optionally. Its looks resemble luxurious vehicles adorning the hammer LED headlights and fog lights concealed within the bumper.

If we compare the cars with its rivals, the XC90 fares well with its 117.5 inches wheelbase. The Audi Q7 is the longest vehicle on the lot. While the Volvo XC90 offers the maximum ground clearance in this comparison, making it the most friendly off-road vehicle out of the lot here, we believe the Q7 still manages to lead in that aspect.

2021 Volvo XC90 Safety

9.8/10

The 2020 Volvo XC90 has scored perfect 5 stars in the crash tests conducted by the NHTSA. Talking about the IIHS ratings, it also rates the three-row SUV with decent scores in all sections, except headlights. That, however, should no longer be an issue.

The Volvo XC90 gets adaptive headlights as standard for 2021

Volvo has decided to make LED headlights that move in the direction of the steering wheel a standard fitment on all models of the 2021 XC90. So this award-winning SUV will only get safer with time. Other safety features offered in the 2021 Volvo XC90 include Blind-spot monitoring, Rear cross-traffic alert, and Volvo Pilot near-autonomous driving among others.

2021 Volvo XC90 Vs Mercedes-Benz GLE 350

Mercedes competes well in terms of all the features provided. In terms of engine braking and acceleration, Mercedes competes well enough too. Both have a spacious interior and similar exterior dimensions too.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350

However, better handling and more safety are provided by the Volvo XC90, whereas, the Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 is a more reliable car. You can choose any car between these as both are good in their aspects.

Volvo XC90 Vs Audi Q7

Audi Q7 is the toughest competitor of Volvo XC90. It defeats the base model with the best torque and similar power. It has better interior volume with better acceleration stats. But is also more expensive to own and maintain. All that improved performance over the XC90 also makes the Q7 less fuel-efficient.

2021 Audi Q7

But the XC90 makes up for it and more with its twin-charged motor on the T6 models. In exchange, the Audi Q7 is longer than Volvo XC90 with a decent wheelbase size making it more capable off-road. Otherwise, both these SUVs look stunning, but the Volvo XC90 offers better safety features, which is always important.

2021 Volvo XC90 Final Verdict

The 2021 Volvo XC90 is a luxurious three-row SUV that would be a great buy considering the list of features offered. It has rich features with better safety than the 2020 model and has a decent fuel economy, which is above the segment average. While comparing with most of its rivals, no doubt the new Volvo XC90 is an SUV worth buying.

The 8-speed transmission works great

Pros - Silky smooth drivetrain, sunroof, blind-spot warnings

Cons - Could do with more power

No regrets XC90 surprised me in every way possible. With most of the focus on the driver seat comfort and convenience, everything revolves around it. The utility is great too and the cargo space is far better than anything I expected. It drives smoothly on the road and shifting has been the best part for the driveability. Helps to stay connected on-road and ensures safety at all times. Yeah, a little sluggish for the weight and could do with a little more power. Yes, I had an awesome time there. Got the truck I wanted at a price I could afford.

Volvo XC90

Pros - Stylish, posh interior, has a ton of safety features

Cons - MPG, little expensive

Luxury on road When you pay over $50,000 there is nothing that the vehicles don’t have. XC90 got it all. Heated and ventilated seats, premium materials like carbon fiber, leather, and whatnot. You also get a heated steering wheel. The infotainment is very intuitive and easy to use. The speakers are loud and clear and have good bass. The only thing that I wanted which was not available was the red color in the interior, wish seats were red. I know a few people there. They helped me throughout the process. I was in and out with my new car in a matter of few hours.

XC 90 volvo

Pros - Interior quality, design/styling, features

Cons - None

A very affordable and nice option for 2021. My new 2021 XC90 seems to be coping up quite well to thse tight city traffic. The engine feels smooth and responsive with the transmission displaying some lag to shift down on quick throttle inputs. The seats also feel pretty relaxing. Apple CarPlay for sure. Just makes using the infotainment easier. Very roomy upfront and in the backseat. The seats are comfortable and have good back and thigh support. Not a fan of the looks and styling. Could have been way better. A plethora of useful features that go a long way in guranteeing safety of the passenger. I?e had vehicles in the past and it never even left me stranded on road. This is the most reliable vehicle I?e ever had. For the price of the car, it been great so far. Best dealership experience i ever had
