The V90 is a perfect ride for family and offers a larger package than the smaller V60 wagon. The 2020 V90 comes with fold-down booster seats for the rear seats, allowing passengers to get a perfect transition from child safety seats to normal seats in the rear.

Certainly, crossover SUVs are more popular than the wagons due to their practical benefits and expandable cargo area. As a standout vehicle, the V90 offers rare exclusivity in the SUV segment.

We Recommend

We would say, the V90 Inscription T6 will be sufficient for most of the buyers. The T6's engine comes with standard all-wheel drive and a twin-charged four-cylinder engine (both supercharged and turbocharged) that pumps out more power over the T5 and engages nicely with the V90's refined ride quality.

2020 Volvo V90 Engine and Performance

7.5/10

The Volvo V90 comes with two engine options T5 and T6. The T5 trims are offered in FWD configuration. The V90, when in T5 guise produces 250-hp from its turbocharged 2.0-liter and comes mated to a standard 8-speed automatic transmission. In the T6 guise, AWD is standard and the engine is twin-charged (turbocharged and supercharged) to produce 316 hp.

2020 Volvo V90 wagon has a 2.0L i4 Intercooled Turbo Premium Unleaded Engine

Under the long hood, the V90's 2.0-liter maintains very tough attire. This inline-four engine isn't designed to offer a rewarding driving experience but offers something more refinement throughout the engine's power band. The engine boasts off compact packaging and a lower center of gravity.

In comparison to the V90 R-Design competitors, the V90 has decent power output. The Mercedes-Benz steals the show with a vigorous 3.0 L V6 engine that produces a whopping 362 hp. But, comparing the Inscription model with 315 hp, the V90 seems to be in the competition, leaving out the Audi A4 All road Premium and the Subaru Outback behind.

How fast is the 2020 Volvo V90?

Let's be honest, the Volvo V90 was never meant drift on the race tracks. V90's engine offers enough power to take care of rider needs. The 8-speed automatic does its work pretty well. It doesn’t stress at all. The V90 will offer the best of its services as long as you cruise it comfortably. If you are looking for better acceleration, the Mercedes-Benz E class is a good option.

How’s the Volvo V90 at ride and handling?

The new V90 is the longest car in this segment. Considering that it just moves right around the corners. The all-wheel-drive trim keeps the car planted on the road. The steering is nimble and you can feel a decent amount of feedback from the road. Its numbers are impressive! With 0.92 g of grip, the V90 can take on a sports sedan around the corners.

2020 Volvo V90 Wagon Front View

The V90 performs well is all terrains and feels quite at home. With the optional air suspensions for the rear wheels, you make the ride more comfortable for uneven roads outside the city. The V90 is not beating the Mercedes-Benz E400 4Matic anytime soon, with a bigger engine and bigger in every aspect, the Mercedes-Benz E400 4Matic has an upper hand on the spec list. But, the Volvo V90 beats the Audi and Subaru easily.

How do the brakes work for Volvo V90?

The V90 wagon offers moderate braking performance for this segment. The T6 trims are equipped with standard AWD for better traction at any driving scenario. The skidpad shows good promise with the V90, the figures actually make it rival many sports sedans.

2020 Volvo V90 Fuel Economy

The Volvo V90 R-design is one of the better-looking wagons out there. It also offers the most smiles per gallon. Mileage rating at 24 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highway, there is no beating the Volvo V90. The car of such size and power, it is incredible to see such figures.

The closest competitor is Audi A4 All road Premium with 22 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the Highway. The Subaru and Mercedes-Benz fall behind because of the big engine and higher capacity of 3.0 Liter.

And when we compare it to the other wagons, it easy to find that turbocharged engines are more frugal. Volkswagen Golf SportWagen scores a combined mpg of 30 while bettering Audi Allroad's score by a margin of 2 mpg.

2020 Volvo V90 Interior

7.7/10

The Volvo V90 comes with the best in class interior quality. The Elegant looking interior with modern tech and Scandinavian design makes it the best place to be in. The natural wood in combination with metal pieces will make you feel rich and your eyes sparkle.

2020 Volvo V90 Wagon Rear Seats

The seats are the most comfortable ones you'll find on any car. The long wheelbase gives the rear passengers ample amount of room to spread their legs. The optional features like heated and ventilated seats with massaging front seats will add up to your comfort level.

What about the tech inside?

The Volvo V90 comes with all the Luxury features that one would expect. The 8-inch infotainment display and a 12.3-inch screen replacing the instrument cluster to a virtual cockpit, the V90 gets Bluetooth connectivity, Apple Car Play, Android Auto, Navigation and in-car WIFI.

2020 Volvo V90 Wagon Infotainment System

All the buttons, including the climate controls and expect the volume button, has been integrated in the Sensus Connect Infotainment display. This can lead one to distracted driving and with layers of menus to browse through and too many clicks to do simple operations, it may get annoying sometimes.

How much space does the cargo provide?

Volvo V90 doesn't give the best of cargo spaces in this segment. With little to complain, it's not too less, it can accommodate luggage for a short weekend ride in 19.8 cu-ft. of space. Fold the rear seats down and the total available volume increases to 53.9 cu-ft.

2020 Volvo V90 Competition

Volvo V90 vs Subaru Outback

There is little that is wrong with the Outback. For decades, the Outback has been a hot seller in the Subaru line-up. Our only gripe is the lackluster acceleration from the base 2.5-liter engine. With a full load of cargo and passengers, this engine runs out of steam. So, you have to carefully plan for merging and passing. But talk about utility, fit and finish and drivability. The Outback comes off as a strong contender in the segment. It offers a spacious and comfortable cabin with a solid finish.

2020 Subaru Outback

Volvo V90 vs Mercedes-Benz E450 4Matic

The E Class wagon features an improved engine which makes 33 horsepower more than the earlier model. The engine isn't eager to pick up the pace but it remarkably quiet. Mercedes intends the E Class to be comfortable before being anything else. The cabin is well insulated, once inside it really feels like you have been separated from the outside world. The premium convertible starts at a price tag of $64,200. The E Class wagon offers best in class engine specifications, sculpted looks, interior fitment, space and a high tech arsenal of safety features. When it comes to pricing, though it is costly.

2020 Mercedes-Benz E450 4Matic

Volvo V90 vs Audi A4 Allroad

It has become a known fact that Audi produces some of the best driver-oriented cars and the same goes for the Audi A4 Allroad. The car commands a premium price when compared to its competition. For that premium price tag ($37,400) it offers better performance than the other wagons in the segment. The A4 Allroad combines a powerful engine, a world-class driving dynamics, and a solid fit and finish. If you like to be behind the wheel then the price premium might be worth your time.

2020 Audi A4 Allroad

2020 Volvo V90 Final Verdict

The Volvo V90 is one of the attractive wagons out there, with the classy interior design and premium features on offer as standard. Starting at a bit higher price, which is justified with the strong exterior design and enormous cabin space, the Volvo V90 is good desirable car. But, if you are looking for more utility than looks and at a cheaper price, there are options such as Subaru Outback to consider.
