There was a time when wagons ruled the segment before SUVs took over their well-established empire. With crossovers in demand these days, wagons are slowly going back to basics. If you think that wagons are required to offer more options as per the current market scenario, then you are absolutely right.

Overall Rating

Interestingly, there is one name in the Wagon category that has saved itself in the time-lapse, the 2020 Volvo V60. The V60 Wagon came last year with a complete redesign and latest value-added features. Offering a sleeker design and appealing cabin, the V60 is different from boxy wagons that came a few years back.

This year, Volvo has dropped the powerful T6 engine that offered an option for all-wheel-drive configuration. Unlike last year, we hope the carmaker would improve its availability and make it available in good numbers at the showrooms.

2020 Volvo V60 Features

8.0/10

The 2020 Volvo V60 wagon is the smaller version of the larger V90 wagon. It shares most of its underpinnings with most of the Volvo models like the XC90, XC60 and S60 sedan. The T5 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 240 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and sends power to either the front or all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

We Recommend

We would recommend the Momentum trim as it comes with an array of standard features and is available at a competitive price. Here, you can choose the options you like and move on in case you do not need some features.

2020 Volvo V60 Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The Volvo V60 comes with two engine options, the standard T5 and the performance loaded T6. The T5 powertrain returns 250 hp and 250 lb feet of torque. A supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine churns out 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, which has more than enough power for your daily driving needs. It comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission that offers smooth shifts.

2020 Volvo V60 Wagon Has a 2.0L i4 Intercooled Turbo Premium Unleaded Engine

Both engines come mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that drives the front wheels and four-wheel drive is optional. The T6 engine always has extra power when you need it, and the gearbox manages to keep the right gear, whether you're in Standard mode or Dynamic mode.

The Audi Allroad have better power delivery when compared to the Volvo V60 and the Audi also produces more torque. The Subaru Outback and VW golf are way down in terms of power output but the price difference is significant.

How fast is the Volvo V60?

The bigger engine which produces 316hp is capable of sprinting the V60 from 0 to 60 in just 5.5 seconds which is faster than most of the competitors. However, the standard engine can take 6.5 seconds to go 60 mph from standstill.

The Audi A4 Allroad overtakes the competition set with shortest acceleration time, followed by Volvo V60 which is a slightly slower. The VW Sportwagen takes the third spot because of its low curb weight while the Outback comes at last.

How is Volvo V60 to drive?

The spirited exterior design of V60 is complemented by the dynamic performance of the turbocharged T5 engine. In the front, there’s double wishbone suspension and in the rear, you’ll find a multilink suspension which makes the ride well composed throughout. The ride is firm with the adaptive dampers, yet the body is stable while cornering. Steering is also well weighted and it doesn’t feel slippery while turning the car.

2020 Volvo V60 Wagon Rear View

There are four driving modes on offer- Eco, Comfort, Dynamic, helping you with better engagement in terms of which helps you to manipulate engine power, automatic gearbox, steering, brakes, stability control system. You can even create your own combination with Individual mode. The tailor-made all-wheel drive system is the best fit for wet and winter roads and it also provides better traction.

How impactful is Volvo V60 braking?

The brake feel is soft yet they feel powerful. Volvo V60‘s braking turns out to be consistent with repetitive use and brings in riding confidence. It is easy to control around the city and on highways. At times, it feels like driving a Sedan, such composed it is. The V60 comes equipped with an emergency braking system that automatically activates maximum braking in some scenarios such as head-on collision.

There is not much of a difference in terms of braking performance, but you can consider VW as the best performer here because of low curb weight.

2020 Volvo V60 Fuel Economy

5.0/10

The Volvo’s turbocharged engine that churns out 316 hp is able to return 24 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Its bigger supercharged and turbocharged engine is capable of returning 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. The supercharged engine brings out lower estimates because of high power output and throttle.

The figures obtained by V60 beats the Audi A4allroad, while the Subaru and Volkswagen deliver almost the same numbers despite of underpowered engines.

2020 Volvo V60 Interior

8.0/10

The front seats offer great support and room from all corners of the V60 wagon. The big bolsters surrounding it do not disturb much but offer decent support to the passengers. The seats are large enough to accommodate 6-occupants easily. The cabin roll is not a big issue in the V60 as the suspension setup is firm. You can feel some potholes inside the cabin. In order to cover this up, Volvo has massaging seats in the top-end trim, “Inscription”, which is meant to add better comfort.

The rear seats follow the same suit. They are large in size and offer decent thigh support. Furthermore, the legroom is large enough and doesn’t make changes to your comfort level. Three full-size adults can occupy the rear seats comfortably. The wagon-structure of the cabin coupled with the panoramic sunroof makes the cabin very airy. The overall cabin is big and wide. However, there is a catch here, the Volvo V60 is a low slung car. Tall and wide-opening rear doors allow the tall passengers to get in-out easily.

How tech loaded is Volvo V60 wagon?

The V60 comes equipped with the Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system. This unit, although very informative, is slow over touch responses. They require harder touch inputs than normal. Moreover, some features are quite complex and requires time to get used to this tech. It comes with the following amenities:

2020 Volvo V60 Wagon Has a 9" Sensus Touchscreen
  • 12.3" Digital Driver Display (T6 and T8)
  • 9" Sensus Touchscreen
  • Bluetooth audio streaming

  • High-Performance audio system (330 W, 10 speakers)

How much spacious is Volvo V60’s cargo?

As for the storage within the cabin, the V60’s interior is least appealing. There are hardly any full-size bottle holders. The center console comes with a slide-in drawer that can accommodate small items of a smartphone size. At the rear seatback, you’ll find the capacity of 23 cu.ft that overshadows some of its rivals. Upon folding the rear seats, you get enormous cargo area of 51 cu.ft. However, the A4 Allroad offers a bigger cargo space (58 cu.ft.).

9.9/10

The 2020 Volvo V60 is designed like its bigger siblings which are based on Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) which accounts for a stylish sedan-like design. The transformation is such that the rear part looks close to a regular sedan. Volvo’s design is quite consistent in this area and this is something that everybody loves about Volvo cars. A prominent character line through the rear fenders differentiates it from the V90.

2020 Volvo V60 Wagon Side View

The front fascia looks aggressive and well-mannered with concave grille located in between sweptback headlights which are shaped like Thor’s hammer. The long-hood, low-slung body, with the Volvo hallmark is pleasing to eyes too. In order to bring out a more athletic stance of the V60, the new model is 4.9 inches longer and 2.0 inches wider than the outgoing model, and the 3.8-inch extra wheelbase.

2020 Volvo V60 Safety

9.9/10

As we all know, Volvo bears the crown for manufacturing the safest vehicles in the world. They offer segment-leading safety features along with supreme build quality. So much so, that they have set a benchmark for other manufacturers when it comes to safety and reliability. Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has crash-tested the new 2020 V60 yet. However, the latter agency has tested the S60 sedan counterpart and gave it top marks in all the crashworthiness categories.

2020 Volvo V60 has Full Auto Brake System

The all-new Volvo V60 Wagon is no different. With a commanding road presence and sleek exterior design, the V60 is the standing proof that station wagons aren’t dead yet. Based on Volvo’s “Scalable Product Architecture” platform, the V60 shares its underpinnings with its other siblings such as the XC60, S90, V90, and also their flagship SUV XC90. It comes equipped with some best in class safety features such as Oncoming Lane Mitigation, Blind Spot information system with rear cross-traffic alert, Whiplash Protection System, Lane-keeping aids, and many more.

Safety Features

Road safety is synonymous with Volvo and they have been working for decades to make your car safer. Your Volvo S90 comes with comprehensive IntelliSafe technologies as standard, including all the safety you’d expect from a Volvo. Those features can see what the driver cannot.

2020 Volvo V60 Competition

7.5/10

Volvo V60 VS Audi A4 All Road

The Audi A4 All road is similar to the Volvo V60 that offers driving dynamics of a sedan with the utility of a wagon. The A4 All road is the only wagon offered by Audi and you have acknowledged its taller height. The German wagon is smaller than the V 90 and also costs less. The Volvo offers much interior space while Audi can be thought of as an extended hatchback.

2020 Audi A4 All Road

Volvo V60 VS Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback is a decent alternative to the V60 which is priced way lower. It has one of the largest cargo in this segment, spacious cabin and comes with loads of standard features. The ride is comfortable and you get all-wheel drive as standard. The Outback also comes with state of the technology like Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving technology and also an upscale cabin.

2020 Subaru Outback

Volvo V60 VS Golf GTI Sportwagen

The Sportwagen offers the driving dynamics of popular Golf hatch with extended cargo capacity. Powered by a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder which puts out 170 hp and 199-pound feet of torque. You can choose between a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The VW Sportwagen is priced lower than the V60 and proves to be a budget alternative. If you can live with little less horsepower than nothing is better than the VW.

2020 Golf GTI Sportwagen

2020 Volvo V60 Final Verdict

9.2/10

The Volvo V60 wagon is a compelling package that combines efficiency, performance, and style. It is very utilitarian and suits people who want to stand out in the crowd. The Volvo V60 has one of the best cabins in its class that comes loaded with tech and features. Of course, the V60 has one of the highest base prices in its class and rivals have more cargo space, but a wagon so beautiful why would you choose anything else.
