Its sales value has been down for the last year, yet it strives to be in the market by offering a lot of techs and safety features. 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Volkswagen is one of the most reliable automobile brands that is known to produce some of the best practical and luxury vehicles in the market today. The Volkswagen Tiguan achieved good scores in the J.D.Power report and customer satisfaction record.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

Though there are a number of ways and techniques for deriving the actual reliability and ownership experience of a vehicle, one of the most trusted ways is to call attention to what the JD Power says about it. The JD Power Report gives ratings to vehicles on certain parameters like the Quality, Driving experience, resale value, etc. The ratings are mainly based on reviews by car-owners.

The Volkswagen Tiguan gets an overall score of 81 on 100 as per the JD power report. Below is a further breakdown of this score:

  • Build Quality and Reliability: 81 out of 100
  • Driving Dynamics: 85 out of 100
  • Resale: 79 out of 100
  • Dealership Experience: 79 out of 100

Though the Volkswagen Tiguan's J.D. Power score is quite impressive, it still is a bit down when compared to the Subaru Forester or the Honda CR-V.

The average price for the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan across the U.S. comes out to be $26,900. The price of each individual vehicle depends on various factors like sales tax, geographical location and individual dealership discounts. However, people from the states of Delaware, Oregon, New Hampshire, Montana, and Atlanta enjoy the best prices as the sales taxes are exempted from these states.

The true ownership cost for the Volkswagen Tiguan for 5 years comes out to be about $35,547. It has a low maintenance cost of $4,621 and repair cost of $137, all estimated for five years meaning that per year the costs for these are really low when compared with its rivals except for Subaru Forester.

No recalls have been reported by NHTSA for the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan but it had 3 recalls for the 2019 model. These recalls included: the label on the tire specified imprecise figures which caused inappropriate inflation of the tire, improper functioning of rear coil springs both leading to many troubles, even the possibility for a crash, and a chance of theft as no alarm is provided when the key is kept in the ignition when the door is opened.

Warranty

The Volkswagen group offers a decent warranty period. The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan gets a limited and powertrain warranty of 4 years or 50,000 miles, each. Corrosion and Perforation warranty periods are for 7 years or 100,000 miles and complimentary scheduled maintenance is covered for 2 year or 20,000 miles

Criteria

Period

Limited warranty

4 years/ 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Powertrain warranty

4 years/ 50,000 miles; whichever is earlier

24-hour roadside assistance

3 years/ 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Other rivals offer a warranty period of the same for 5 years. Corrosion warranty periods seem to be good for Tiguan while others offer the same for fewer years.

Miles per Dollar

The miles per dollar is an estimated figure, that is a derivative of the number of miles driven in a given span of time and the maintenance costs incurred during the same period. On average, the maintenance cost for the Tiguan, over a span of 5 years and 75,000 miles, comes up around $4,631. Therefore the miles per dollar for the Volkswagen Tiguan comes out around 16.19 miles per $1.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Buying Advice

We will recommend the S trim as it gets all the necessary features and techs. 4Motion trims are also good and give you an off-road driving experience. If you are a luxury shopper, then higher trims like SEL, SEL Premium R-Line will be apt as it contains features like a sunroof and many packages which are absent in lower trims. Sales figures for VW Tiguan were very low in 2020 when compared to its rivals but it does offer decent features.

Is buying a used Volkswagen Tiguan a good idea?

The Volkswagen Tiguan offers an average resale value even though the maintenance and repair costs are very less compared to other rivals. Buying a used Volkswagen Tiguan is fine as it has low maintenance costs and depreciation.

2019, 2017, or 2016 models will be better when depreciation values are considered. If you choose the 2019 model, you’ll have to pay only 81.55% of the original price and you get 83.33% of lifetime left forward. The net used value will be 10.12 which includes annual maintenance cost, depreciation and lifetime of the car. If you opt for 2017 models, you’ll get the car for $16,439,i.e you will have to pay only 59.57% of the original price and you get 75% of reliable lifetime. You can also check out the Car Indigo inventory to find a great deal on a used Volkswagen Tiguan.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Engine and Performance

6.9/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan gets a 2.0-liter Inline 4 Cylinder TSI engine which is capable of producing 184 hp power and 221 lb-ft torque. The engine is straight out of the 2020 iteration of the Tiguan. Though a new performance version was also likely to be introduced for the model year 2021, – Tiguan R.

The 2021 Tiguan R was expected to get a more powerful 2.0-liter turbo 4 cylinder engine with 300 hp plus horsepower and about 300 lb-ft torque at its disposal. However, that's not happening anytime soon as Volkswagen has no intentions of upping the Tiguan's power in 2021.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Engine

Transmission duties are performed by an 8 Speed Automatic Transmission that comes with a Tip Tronic functionality. The transmission is smooth in operation but the Turbo Lag from the 2.0L motor, somewhat makes the Transmission a bit Sluggish to respond at times.

As standard, the transmission setup of the Tiguan routes all the grunt to the front wheels of this SUV. Well, that's until you opt-in for the optional AWD drivetrain, or go for the top of the line SEL Premium R-Line trim which gets Volkswagen's 4Motion AWD system as standard.

On a comparative analysis of the rivals, we can see that the 2021 Honda CR-V offers the most power on tap among the group but the Volkswagen Tiguan scores in torque. With a twisting force of 211 lb-ft, the Tiguan gets the torquiest motor in this class.

The 2021 Subaru Forester's 2.5L naturally aspirated flat-4 powerhouse belts out just 182 hp, making it the most underpowered car in here. The 2021 Mazda CX-5 gets 187 hp and slots right above the Subie.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Acceleration And Braking Performance

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan's power figures may make it seem like a spirited sprinter, but that's just not the case here. Though the Tiguan is the most torque-heavy car in its segment, it's acceleration feels anything but eager or rapid.

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in 8.2 seconds while taking almost 17 seconds to clock the quarter of a mile lap. The Tiguan’s extravagant dimensions don’t make the SUV feel agile or eager to respond to any throttle inputs as quickly as one would expect from an SUV of this class.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Accelerate 0-60 MPH Just In 8.2 Sec.

Moving on to the braking department, the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan has 4-wheel Disc type brakes with a 4-Wheel anti-lock braking system. These when combined with 13.4-inch front brake rotors and 11.8-inch rear brake rotor assists the vehicle to break off from 60 mph in 124 ft.

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan's acceleration figures are not outright impressive, yet good enough. The 2021 Honda CR-V is the fastest car here with a 0-60 MPH time of 7.5 seconds. Meanwhile, with a 0-60 MPH acceleration time of 9.6 seconds, the Subaru Forester is the slowest sprinter

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Fuel Economy

7.1/10

The 2-liter TSI engine in the Tiguan is responsive enough. It, however, produces less mileage than the other engine in the segment, especially in the segment. The fuel economy figures of the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan figures estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) show that Tiguan has the ability to go 22 mpg around the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg for combined driving.

The Tiguan's mpg figures are a bit meek as compared to other rivals, but it compensates for this shortcoming by offering a fuel tank capacity of 15.3-gallon. With a completely filled fuel tank, Tiguan can travel around 337 miles in the city, 444 miles on the highway, and 382 miles for combined driving situations.

The Subaru Forester offers the best mileage in the segment with its unbeatable range of 417 miles combined. The CR-V stacks up just behind alongside the Mazda CX-5, leaving the German alone at the last.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Interior

8.0/10

The interior of the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is easily the most premium in its segment. The interior design also builds up in volume with the newer design language from VW, that it has been incorporating in most of its vehicles. All buttons have been properly placed while there are no inconsistencies in design or panel gaps. The Volkswagen Tiguan, despite its seemingly compact looking dimensions, offers a good amount of space on the inside for its occupants.

Advancing towards the seats, Tiguan comes with 7 seating capability. The former 5 seat models will be discontinued in the market. New standard heated front seats are the highlights. The seats in the Volkswagen Tiguan offer good bolstering and support while providing adequate cushioning. They have been cushioned in ways such that the body doesn’t feel tired or sore after long hours of sitting inside the same.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Seats

However, the third-row seating of the 2021 Tiguan is not the most comfortable spot to be in for adults and is best left for children only. The third-row seating of the Tiguan has stiff thigh support and the negligible legroom adds on to the discomfort, thus enabling a "knee-in-the-nose" posture.

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan comes to acquire minor interior upgrades. The first change that you will notice when you step into Tiguan is the new multi-colored ambient lighting, leather upholstery, 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, digitized sporty steering wheel, a touch-sensitive module to operate climatronic automatic climate control functions similar to Arteon replacing the dial buttons, and illuminated sliders for temperature and fan control.

Some of the most prominent convenience features aboard the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan are:

  • Power cargo access remote release
  • Keyfob trunk/hatch/door release
  • Illuminated passenger vanity mirror
  • Illuminated auxiliary driver and passenger-side visor mirrors
  • Retained accessory power
  • Day-night rearview mirror
  • HomeLink Garage door transmitter
  • VW Car-Net services
  • Air filter
  • Cruise control

How’s the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan’s infotainment system?

The 2021 Tiguan is packed with all the latest techs. The spotlight falls on MIB3 technology which provides natural speech control, phone pairing and optional wireless Apple CarPlay along with VW’s We Connect system, all updated to be more robust than the previous versions.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Infotainment Screen

Tiguan offers a standard 12.3-inch display and the higher trims come with Volkswagen Digital Cockpit having a 10.25-inch instrument cluster. Apart from these, Tiguan gets two illuminated USB-C ports positioned under the air-conditioning module in the center console. For a melodious trip, Tiguan will hold onto its previous standard Fender Premium Audio System but with updated wattage of 480 and the new optional Harman Kardon sound system with 10 speakers.

Some of the most prominent infotainment features of the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan are:

  • Sirius XM radio subscription.
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
  • VW Car-Net App-Connect with Voice Control
  • Wifi hotspot.
  • Ambient lighting
  • App-connect
  • Car-Net Telematics
  • Illuminated USB-C ports

What about the cargo capacity of the Volkswagen Tiguan?

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan offers 12 cu ft. of cargo storage space with its 3rd Row up and 37.6 cu ft. in its 5 Seater Avatar. For added utility and practicality, the Tiguan’s second row can be folded down which liberates even higher storage space. However, the only issue here is that the Tiguan's high load lip makes it difficult to stack up heavy and huge objects.

In terms of cabin storage space, there are plenty of bottle holders and cubby holes inside the Tiguan’s cabin. Front and rear cupholders and illuminated glove box are some other storage areas inside the 2021 Tiguan.

While mostly no other SUV can beat the Tiguan in terms of the cargo capacity, it’s the mighty Honda CR-V that trumps the Tiguan in the cargo space department. Meanwhile, the 2021 Subaru Mazda CX-5 offers the least available trunk space.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Exterior

6.9/10

The Volkswagen Tiguan's exterior will soon receive its fair share of updates when the SUV will get a complete revamp, which is scheduled for the model year 2022 but the 2021 model remains mostly unchanged. The exterior design of the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV won’t win any Fashion Contests or Style Awards. That said, the Tiguan does look Handsome from all angles with its Precise Lines and well put together body.

The Tiguan's design language is more or less basic with a boxy shape and structure. However, despite its orthodox mold, the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan looks quite intriguing with its VW design language, which has been incorporated by the German auto-marque in most of the cars from its lineup.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Third Quarter View

The 2021 Tiguan's shape of form is not something extraordinary, but what's indeed impressive is the way that all the elements have been put together. There are no panel gaps and inconsistencies in the design of the exterior and the Tiguan has to be one of the best-built SUVs in the segment.

The SUV isn’t the smallest in the class and looks big - courtesy of its extravagant dimensions. It doesn’t look compact from any dimension and this translates into good interior space for the passengers and the Cargo Area. The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is the longest, widest, and tallest SUV in its class. While these grand proportions make it look gangsta, it also adds to its weight, making it the heaviest offering in this comparison, which, in turn affects the performance.

However, the Tiguan, being an SUV, stays true to the SUV traits and offers the best in class ground clearance of 7.9-inches. This adds to the water wading abilities and inspires confidence while going over speed bumps or rocks/ small boulders while off-roading.

Some of the most noteworthy exterior features of the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan are:

I? a fan of Tiguan. It is a joy to drive no matter where. It is decently fast; HANDLES like a charm. But everything is not roses and sunshine: it is loud which is irritating, to say the least.
