Introduced in 2019, the Volkswagen Jetta GLI, was the first proper hot sedan from the German Marquee that added some spice to the otherwise weakening sedan segment. Come 2020 and VW wants to increase it’s share of Success with the same. The Jetta GLI, borrows a lot from VW’s hot hatch, the Golf GTI and that is evident in the way that the GLI drives. Power and Torque figures are rated at a healthy 228hp and 258hlbs.-ft. Respectively. What makes the Jetta, a true sport sedan is the fact that VW is offering it with a 6 Speed Manual or a 7 Speed DSG Dual Clutch Gearbox.

For 2020, VW is offering the Jetta GLI in just 2 trims- S and Autobahn. Unlike the 2019 Model, the Anniversary Edition misses out for 2020 but you get features like adaptive suspension and dynamic chassis control as standard in the Autobahn trim. You also get Wireless Charging as standard in the Jetta GLI and the Next Generation version of the Car-Net system from VW. Prices of the 2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI starts from nearly $26,000 and goes just above $30,000 for the fully loaded, Automatic Autobahn trim.

The Volkswagen Jetta GLI primarily squares off against the Honda Civic Si Sedan but we have also included the Subaru WRX Sedan and the Chevrolet Malibu Premier Sedan for comparison purposes.

Which trim to go for?

The Base S trim will fathom the needs of most buyers of the 2020 Jetta GLI, we would still suggest you spend the extra grand and get the Autobahn Trim. Not only do you get extra convenience features but you get added dynamic features as well that make your daily drives, a lot more fun.

2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Sedan Engine and Performance

6.4/10

The Engine in the 2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI has been taken from the super sporty Golf GTI. The 2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI gets a bump of nearly 80 horses from the standard Jetta and now produces 228hp and 258lbs.-ft. Of torque. The 4 driving modes in the Jetta GLI- Normal, Sport, Eco, Custom, allow for a different driving experience according to the mode chosen. The Sport mode tweaks the shift points and throttle maps and is the most engaging to drive. The Eco mode optimizes these and the AC for Economy and helps in improving MPG figures.

Speaking of Transmission, the 2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI gets a 6 Speed Manual Transmission and a 7 speed DSG Dual Clutch Transmission. Both perform brilliantly well in all conditions and offer jerk-free shifts at all times.

Talking of Numbers, the Subaru tops the list in terms of power and performance and the Chevy comes in 2nd. All Cars in this comparison other than Subaru WRX come with an FWD setup. The Subaru gets an advantage in the form of AWD being standard on it.

How fast is the Jetta GLi?

The 2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI doesn’t fail to impress in terms of performance. With just 6.5 seconds to 60MPH, the Jetta GLI manages to demolish the time of its chief rival- The Honda Civic Si. In terms of daily driving, the Jetta GLI offers enough grunt and punch to perform overtakes on all occasions.

The Best performing Sedan in our comparison turns out to be the Chevrolet Malibu premier that does 60MPH in under 6 seconds. The Subaru is the second quickest in our list and the Honda comes in the last.

What does it feel like on the handling front?

The MQB platform though has significantly changed the way the Jetta GLI handles. The handling is tilted towards the sportier side and the low profile tires add to the drama of driving the Jetta GLI. The Flat Bottom Light steering weighs up well according to the speed and is a joy to steer. It points in the direction you wanna take your Jetta to and doesn’t misbehave at any point.

The multi-link independent rear suspension with VAQ limited-slip differential and the Front MacPherson struts adds to the driving dynamics of the Jetta GLI and gives it a typical European Flair. With a reduction in ride height by 0.6”, the Jetta GLI feels more planted at high speeds and takes corners, more confidently. The Dynamic Chassis Control with the Electric Adaptive Dampers, changes the suspension tune in milliseconds, to adapt to the driving mode and the surface. Speaking of driving modes, you have Sport, Normal and Comfort modes and perform as per their names. Unlike the Standard Jetta though, the Jetta GLI has a slightly firmer setup overall than the regular Jetta but it isn’t unnerving at any point.

How does it fare on the Braking front?

With the Braking setup taken directly from the Golf GTI, the 2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI performs extremely well in the braking department. In terms of brake feel, the brake pedals offer a lot of confidence while braking and don’t feel jittery or spongy in application. The byte increases with the increase in brake application and stopping power is impressive.

When comparing the Jetta to its rivals, you will find the Subaru WRX, matching the braking performance of the VW. That’s partly due to the fact that the Subaru is the only Sedan here to come with an AWD setup. The Malibu, is good in terms of the braking performance, courtesy of its lower weight and big brake rotors.

2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Sedan Fuel Economy

7.0/10

With VW taking the turbocharging route for the New Jetta GLI, the MPG figures are at par with the best in the segment, if not the best. The VW returns an overall MPG figure of 28. Couple that to a 13.2 Gallon fuel tank and you have a minimum driving range of 330 miles. That’s a decent range for the kind of performance that the Jetta has to offer. VW attributes this increase in MPG figures to its New Lightweight MQB Architecture and the efficient Turbocharged motor.

When compared to its rivals, the VW matches the Subaru in terms of the range on offer but leads in the Individual MPG figures. The Subaru takes advantage of it’s massive 15.9 Gallon Fuel tank and despite the low 23MPG overall MPG figure, does well to rake up the same range as the Jetta GLI. The Malibu makes use of it’s big Fuel tank as well and hence delivers better range the 2 mentioned previously. The Honda Civic Si, is the undisputed King of the Hill, as far as MPG figures go and despite the small 12.4 gallon fuel tank, delivers nearly the same range as the Chevy.

2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Sedan Interior

7.5/10

With the incorporation of the modular MQB platform for the new 2020 Jetta GLI, VW has cleverly carved out a lot more space in the Interiors of the Jetta. The driver-focused cabin is evident from the way the center console is tilted towards the driver's side, making it easier for the driver to control things.

2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI seating and comfort

The Interior layout is typical German in Build. Customers won’t see many Inconsistencies or Panel gaps in the interiors of the Jetta GLI and will be thoroughly impressed by the quality of materials used. The Seats have been given better bolstering and cushioning than the previous-gen car and have been made more ergonomic.

Passengers in the Front seat will enjoy the Space liberated via the use of the MQB platform in the Jetta GLI. The headroom is decent for most passengers while the Shoulder room and Legroom will be something, the customers won’t complain much about. Similar Story exists for the Rear as well wherein, customers will get oodles of Space to comfortably rest their Bodies while on long drives.

How good is the Cargo carrying capacity?

While the MQB platform may have reaped benefits for the Passengers of the New Jetta, the Cargo capacity may seem to have taken a hit in this process, albeit by a very small margin. This, in no way, can be called Small and is still comparable and better to what most rivals offer. There are a decent set of cubby holes and other nifty storage spaces, spread all around the cabin of the 2020 Jetta GLI.

2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Sedan Exterior

5.0/10

Volkswagens of the past have always been criticized for their boring and dull exteriors and styling. With the 7th Generation of the Jetta GLI, VW has tried to change this reputation of theirs, by incorporating a better design and character.

There are sharp lines across the bonnet of the sedan that offers some flair to the otherwise “Subtle” front. The Red treatment on the exteriors gives the GLI, a sportier look than the standard Jetta and feels more appealing as well.

2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI has changed heavily in terms of Weights and Dimensions

The 2020 Jetta GLI has changed heavily in terms of Weights and Dimensions, after the incorporation of the MQB platform. It has grown considerably bigger over its previous generation avatar owing to the same fact. The Grill has grown bigger than before, with a more prominent VW Logo in the front.

While the Jetta GLI is bigger than its immediate Rival- The Honda Civic Si, it still is smaller in size when compared to the Chevy Malibu Premier. 2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Sedan Safety

6.2/10

The VW Jetta has been one of the safest cars in the segment. It earned a Top Safety Pick in the IIHS Rating for 2018, which is a testimony to VW’s preference for the Safety of its Cars. Since the GLI is based on the same, we expect ratings to be similar to that but more on that, once we get official results from the IIHS and the NHTSA

The 2020 VW Jetta GLI hasn't been yet tested by the IIHS nor the NHTSA but we will update you with the same once we have the final results.

Standard safety features

  • ABS with EBD and Hydraulic Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control with Anti Slip Regulation

2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Sedan Competition

7.0/10

Volkswagen Jetta GLI vs. Honda Civic

The Honda Civic is the Benchmark of the Compact Sedan Segment because of multiple reasons. It has a powerful engine that feels refined and delivers good fuel efficiency. It also offers tremendous space inside the Cabin and in the Cargo area as well. The VW however, trumps the Civic in almost all parameters. Leave aside the slightly inferior quality of plastics used and you will the Jetta GLI for its performance, handling and Features. Sure, the Honda is cheaper by $500 but it's still not enough, to outrun the Jetta GLI here.

2020 Honda Civic

Volkswagen Jetta GLI vs. Chevrolet Malibu

While it is unfair to compare the Malibu and Jetta GLI directly because of their sizes, the Jetta GLI is quite close to its rival in terms of performance. The Malibu comes in just 1 trim and is expensive by quite a margin when compared to the VW. The VW is by far, the better build of the 2 and hands down, is the better handler of the lot as well. The Chevy may have better numbers in terms of power and torque but out on the open road, it’s the VW that feels more compliant and composed.

2020 Chevrolet Malibu

Volkswagen Jetta GLI vs. Subaru WRX

The Subaru WRX is the closest car in terms of handling and performance when compared to the VW. The Subaru tackles the road surfaces, slightly better than the VW and edges the VW in road manners as well. The VW on the other hands feels the more premium of the 2 and offers a lot of features for its asking price. The Subaru is a decent buy for people who are willing to spend the extra cash but for those who can’t, the Jetta GLI will leave a smile on their faces.

2020 Subaru WRX

2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI Sedan Final Verdict

The 2020 Volkswagen Jetta GLI, adds some action and drama to the rapidly declining sedan segment. Coupled with the Dynamics of the Golf GTI and based out of an All-New MQB Platform, The VW Jetta GLI is a proper Hot Sedan with typical European handling and flair. With the GLI, you get the finesse of a European Saloon and the Build of a German Sedan. Add to this, a long list of creature comforts and dynamic enhancements and the Jetta GLI will not only make your commutes fun but bring a big smile to your face on a big straight stretch of a Motorway as well.

"Jetta GLI is a Golf with trunk"

Autobahn edition of Jetta 2020 lives upto its name and drives pretty soft & sporty, both at the same time. Well it has got sport adaptive suspension and it does a pretty good job in providing smooth driving experience. Performance on the other hand is also commendable with the size it comes in.
