In its recent March 17 annual media conference, Volkswagen finally hinted at what the future of the Jetta could look like. No detailed documentation but the video conference did mention an updated Volkswagen Jetta arriving late 2021 as a 2022 model. Interestingly, Volkswagen also announced an all new “Taos” SUV in the event which would roll down with a new 1.5-liter engine. Speculations have it though that this upgraded engine could also get a seat in the 2022 Jetta.

With regard to its seventh-gen upgrade though, the updates on the 2022 Jetta are said to be minimalistic. Expect a tweaked exterior design, revised interiors and an enhanced feature list over the current 2021 Jetta. The anticipated tweaks with the expected upgraded engine can bring the Jetta back into some good business against the Honda Civic, Kia Forte and Hyundai Elantra. However with significant changes prices may GET a bump with the 2021 Volkswagen Jetta expectedly arriving with a starting MSRP of around $20,000.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The current 2021 Jetta does have those trademark German creases and a comfortable ride but misses the visual engagement which one seeks for today. Yes, it still has a comfortable and spacious cabin and its 1.4-liter engine offers healthy duties but neither of them seem very polished. That's mainly because its current seventh-generation model updated in 2019 is not a great departure from its outgoing generation. The design still remains the same with familiar character lines and in a “curvy” and trendy era today, it just looks bland.

That's exactly where the 2022 Jetta facelift plants heavy hopes in our hearts. While the updated Jetta is surely expected to bring in a refreshed cabin and revised creature comforts, things are still skeptical on the exterior part. That's only until we finally get to see what the updated 2022 Jetta looks like and packs in. The updates though even if not striking enough, we do hope that they will bring an evolved package to buyers looking for that german elegance and sophistication on a budget.

2022 Volkswagen Jetta Pricing and Features

Even with a facelift, the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta is expected to have the same 4-level trim structure as on its current model. Potential buyers would still have the option to choose between S, SE, SEL and R-Line models. Similar on the componentry side again but the trim-levels should also continue to distinguish themselves with a hierarchical feature-list.

Since the update would also bring some feature-revisions and restructuring across the 2022 Jetta range, we will have to wait for a while for a better picture. However, the revision therapy is very likely to bring in a price bump with the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta expected to kickstart at an MSRP of around $20,000.

2022 Volkswagen Jetta Engine and Performance

No official word from Volkswagen though but experts have it that the 2022 Jetta will feature an upgraded version of its current 1.4-liter turbo engine. We are talking about a 1.5-liter turbo 4-cylinder recently announced by Volkswagen which will power its upcoming compact-SUV for America, the ‘Taos’.

While the current 1.4-liter pot is good for 147 hp, the updated engine is expected to generate at least above 160 hp. On the transmission front, the 6-speed manual might get called off with the 8-speed automatic remaining as the sole shifter. While the current engine does feel refined and aptly powered, the updated engine should promise some extra bling.

Thankfully, with no severe mechanical changes, the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta would continue to delight buyers with its comfortable and sublime ride quality. The nicely tuned suspension soaks up bumps very well and cabin vibrations and noise are kept under good check as well.

The planted chassis couples up very well with the turbo inline-4 motor helping the current 2021 Jetta to charge from 0-60 mph in a class leading 7.7 seconds. With the revised engine and expected power bump, these figures should further improve. Even in terms of braking, the Jetta’s four-wheel discs coupled with ABS offer good bite with no signs of fade or body movements.

2022 Volkswagen Jetta Fuel Economy

With an expected update on the engine front, Volkswagen could also refine the 8-speed automatic transmission for better efficiency. What that means is that buyers would still get around 34 combined mpg with the 2022 Jetta. With a sincere 13.2 gallons of fuel tank in place, the 2022 Jetta would also retain its promise of around 450 miles of combined driving range.

Among the competition here, the current 2021 Jetta still offers one of the best economies in the segment, only next to the Hyundai Elantra. Although by a very small margin. However, along with its updated aesthetics, the 2022 Jetta would surely be a more lucrative proposition than its current model.

2022 Volkswagen Jetta Interior

On the inside, the 2022 Volkswagen is expected to carry a similar and typical Volkswagen interior layout as its current 2021 model. However, we do expect to see some tweaks in terms of interior fit and finish. While the design should remain the same, won’t be surprised to see some updated cabin materials along with revised interior accents.

On the seating front as well, things should mostly remain the same with cloth upholstery and manual-adjustability in the lower, gradually upgrading to power-adjust and leatherette in the higher ones. The seats offered in the Jetta are comfortable though with good padding and under-thigh support and should remain the same even for 2022.

On the infotainment front though, being a compact sedan, the 2022 Jetta is not likely to see any major changes. Expect the setup of an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment and a 10.65-inch digital drivers display to be carried forward in 2022 as well. Thankfully, the touchscreen infotainment is sharp and crisp and does come loaded with features like Satellite Navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Overall, the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta would continue to delight buyers with its wholesome interio presentation. It has a good infotainment, is comfortable and also offers good cabin space, especially at the back. Even its 14.1 cu-ft of cargo space is on par with the class-leading Elantra’s 14.4 and should be enough for most of your packing needs. A significant number of helpful in-cabin storages further polish its interior generosity.

Expected Interior Features

  • 10.65-inch digital drivers display
  • Automatic air-conditioning

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • SiriusXM radio
  • Wireless charging and WiFi hotspot
  • Bucket front seats
  • Split-folding rear seatback

2022 Volkswagen Jetta Exterior

As mentioned earlier, the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta isn’t going to be different from the 2021 model year when it comes to looks and exterior components. The grille, front bumper and the front and rear lights are probably the only components slated for a change.

Apart from the aforementioned changes, everything else is likely to remain the same. The elegant roofline highlighted with chrome, 16’-inch standard rims and the overall styling would be the same venue for 2022. However, along with the front and rear fascia updates, we can also see some new wheel designs and paint schemes on tap.

The current Jetta is no doubt an elegant looking machine with a typical European styling. However, it has now been overshadowed by a bunch of Japanese and Korean rivals which offer better styling, value and of -course, better reliability. For those looking for a tint of class and upscale presence, the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta would still offer a preferable choice.

Expected Exterior Features

  • Revised and larger front grille
  • Updated front and rear bumpers
  • New exclusive wheel designs
  • Heated mirrors
  • LED headlights and tail lights
  • LED DRLs
  • Rain-sensing wipers
  • Fog lights with low-speed corner illumination

2022 Volkswagen Jetta Safety

Similar to its most other aspects, the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta should also retain its current safety suite. Not a bad thing since the Jetta already packs some of the most advanceds vehicle safety systems on the market today. You do get features like Rearview Camera, Blind-Spot Monitor and Rear Cross-Traffic alert, and Forward Collision Warning with Automatic Emergency Braking even on the second-tier “SE” trim.

The higher trims further unlock Automatic High Beams, Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane-Keep Assist. Disappointingly though, the base “S” model skips most of these equipment as standard. We do hope that Volkswagen addresses the same with the 2022 Jetta. For the time being though, the current generation of the Jetta already enjoys a “5-star” rating from NHTSA and a ‘good” overall rating from IIHS.

2022 Volkswagen Jetta Competition

Volkswagen Jetta Vs Honda Civic

Thanks to its well-rounded propositions, the Honda Civic is one of the best-sellers in its segment. Compared to the Jetta, it looks modern and stylish, is fun to drive, has multiple engine options and is also more efficient than the Volkswagen here. Even in terms of safety and reliability, the Civic is considerably ahead than the Jetta. However, the Jetta does take a lead in terms of comfort, cabin and cargo space as well as an enhanced suite of advanced tech and safety features.

Volkswagen Jetta Vs Hyundai Elantra

Up against the Jetta, the Elantra is surely more stylish and curvy along with tons of tech and safety features on board. The Elantra is also more frugal, has a premium and youthful cabin along with better front-seat room compared to the Volkswagen here. However, the Jetta feels more engaging and comfortable on the move, has a more upscale and classy road presence along with better rear seat room than the Elantra. Although with the exact same power output, the Jetta is also significantly quicker than the Hyundai.

2022 Volkswagen Jetta Final Verdict

Not very severe but the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta is suely in for some promising updates. While the cosmetic revisions are said to be minimal what could be its highlight is a punchier 1.5-liter engine. Though the current Volkswagen Jetta is not the most stylish proposition in its segment, it's fine aesthetics touches and new powertrain will surely build upon its potent and comfortable character.

Good.

Pros - Comfortable, strong engine, reliability

Cons - Ground clearance, high maintenance

Can be better Jetta is the perfect car for me. It offers everything I wanted. The only thing I wish was different is the maintenance cost. It is high especially for a sedan at this price point. Other than that, I couldn’t have asked for anything more. It is a great car in every sense of the word. It is very comfortable on long rides and is great on gas. Be it long rides or grocery runs it handles everything like a champ. Truly wonderful car. The best experience ever!

Could be better

Pros - Good gas mileage, value, looks

Cons - Uncomfortable, legroom

Jetta is a safe, reliable, durable vehicle but uncomfortable. So do your research, test drive & decide. Jetta is a good small family hauler with all the necessary safety and entertainment features. The engine is quiet, has a smooth power delivery, and is great on gas. Safe, comfortable, durable! Jetta is uncomfortable and is not very spacious. In short, not a good interior. Look at the other options before deciding on Jetta. The exterior looks sleek & the design is perfect! Jetta has a good number of safety features to keep me safe in case of any mishap. Has good gas mileage and everything feels sturdy and feels like it will last a long It a lot of car for $23,600. time.

Nice!

Pros - Fun to drive, smooth ride, reliable

Cons - Controls hard to get used to, plastic

So far it has been really good. If you are looking for a multipurpose daily commuter than look no more. Jetta is the car you are looking for. It is good for family trips, grocery shopping, and daily work commuting. The infotainment is really intuitive. Jetta has good trunk space and I really appreciate it. The seats are comfortable and have good space for your feet. Outward visibility is decent and it has no major blindspot. I really like the design/styling of Jetta. It is round which I prefer over the sharp-edged car of today. Never an issue! Feels very safe and durable! I? not too sure. Since this is a new car I don know about For $27k, I don think there is a better car in the market. reliability.
