2017 Volkswagen Jetta Price, Review, Ratings and Pictures

The Volkswagen Jetta is quite an old but popular compact sedan in the market that offers a lot to like, for the average American family. It is a feature-rich, safe, economical as well as a fun-to-drive car that is offered 5 different trims to suit your needs. The 2017 Volkswagen Jetta adds features such as rearview camera as standard with the Hybrid model discontinued. It comes with a starting price of a little under the shade of $18,000 for the manual transmission with the price tag going all the way up to $29,000 for the range-topping GLI model. While the 2017 model year does offer a major update, the car remains fuel-efficient and continues to offer nimble handling characteristics with well-built German robustness. However, because of the cost-cutting on the Jetta, it skips on features such as LED headlamps and instead offers a halogen unit even on the top-spec trim. Thus, in a sea of value-for-money family-oriented sedans, it does not offer anything to differentiate itself and thus, fails to stand out in the segment.

Good?!

Pros - Looks, interior design, tech

Cons - Space, Power

Great at what it does Jetta may not only have a big touch screen but is very comfortable. The cabin is feature-loaded and has nice materials all-around. Volkswagen’s new infotainment is very easy to use and is very intuitive. And I love how cozy it is. I’m very happy with the interior because it has everything I wanted. And the build quality is top-notch too. Very happy with the experience. Had an amazing time there!

Daily driver.

Pros - Spritely performance, high quality cabin, good high speed stability

Cons - Not automatic climate controls,

The reasonable compact sedan. I must say that the engine feels pretty strong. It settles around 1600rpm at 70mpg giving me excellent highway fuel economy figures. Also I'm quite suprised on how stable this thing feels even on closing triple digit speeds. The hefty feeling steering wheel feels great to use and makes the car quite agile. The ride quality and comfort is also pretty great. The insides of this car is not something that what you would call modern, but the built feels very robust and everything has a solid feeling to it. Rick was such a helping hand whilst we were at Lindsays. He answere all our questions promptly and did help us in picking the right trim.

Jetta 2017

Pros - Spacious, cargo space, fuel efficiency

Cons - Display issues, controls have lag, price

Economic Sedan What's not like this, yeah, it is a bit expensive, but the hybrid power transmission gives it an excellent fuel economy, It is a decent car, with more regular drive like features, spacious cabin and trunk. The good thing is its quick acceleration and fuel efficiency. Overall a decent car.] Amazing

Overall Rating

The new Volkswagen Jetta is offered in five trims with three distinct engine options. There is the base 1.4-liter engine for the efficiency-conscious buyer, a midrange 1.8-liter engine for hitting the sweet spot between good performance and good gas mileage. Lastly, a 2.0-liter motor for the enthusiastic driver inside of you. In terms of features, the Jetta offers features like traction control, a touch-screen display, Bluetooth, a USB port, cruise control, and a backup camera, as standard. Thus, even in a segment with cut-throat competition, the Jetta proves its mettle as a family sedan. However, its interior does not feel as plush as what its rivals have on offer.  But while its interior might lack quality, its class-leading fuel efficiency and independent rear suspension, adequately make up for it. Though the Jetta has its own drawbacks, it holds its ground against the likes of the Mazda 3, Kia Forte, and Hyundai Elantra.

7.2/10

Volkswagen is known to offer a long list of trims for its cars, to suit the buying choice of, theoretically, everyone. Primarily there are five trims that are available: S, SE, Sport, SEL, and GLI. While the S and SE get an option of a 1.4L engine with both a 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic and transmission and, the GLI is offered with a 6-speed manual and automatic transmission that is mated to a 2.0L engine. The Sport and SEL are perhaps the only two variants that are offered only with an automatic transmission and feature a 1.8L engine.

We Recommend

The Volkswagen Jetta is a true family sedan at heart. The ride quality feels supreme and the engine works decently for a car in its segment. Thus, we recommend buying the SE variant that adds additional features to the car, increasing overall usability and practicality. The six-speed automatic transmission works impeccably granting higher fuel economy and it is safe to say that the Jetta caters to every need of the buyer.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Engine and Performance

7.0/10

As mentioned before, the Jetta gets offers three engine options that can be configured with an automatic or manual transmission depending on the variant that one chooses. The base trim Jetta S gets a 1.4L I4 engine that produces 150 hp of engine power and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. The engines on offer with the SEL and GLI trim are 1.8L and 2.0L engines that produce 170 hp and 210 hp respectively. The base engine sort of feels underpowered, especially if you are going full house. While the lack of power is not felt within the city limits, overtaking moving traffic on the freeway makes you realize the lack of it. With the midrange 1.8 L motor, things are much improved. What suits this sedan the best is the top-spec 2.0L engine that offers the fun-to-drive factor and feels quite sprightly.

In its segment, the Jetta has a rather powerful engine when compared with competitors. The Hyundai Elantra and its sister brand’s Kia Forte LX feature 2.0L engines that produce 147hp which offers decent performance at best. The Mazda Mazda3 sedan has the highest power output at 155hp, however falls short of the Jetta in torque production

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Acceleration

The Volkswagen Jetta S’ 1.4L motor pulls the car from a still to 60 MPH in 7.7 seconds and helps it cross the quarter-mile in 16.3 seconds. However, as one moves to buy the top-of-the-line GLI trim performance improves extensively. While its numbers not available, you can expect it to e 1-2 seconds quicker than the base engine.

Amongst the 4 cars, the Kia Forte with the least powerful engine has the best acceleration capabilities and races to 60 MPH mark in 6.6 seconds, and clocks a time of 15.2 seconds in the quarter-mile run. Despite a similar engine setup like the Forte, the Elantra has the least impressive figures, thanks to its lethargic gearbox.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Braking

The Jetta’s braking capabilities may not be the best-in-class but for a family that weighs nearly 3000 lbs, it does a fine job. The Jetta makes use of smaller brakes that measure around 11.3 inches at the front and 10 inches at the rear. The pedal does not feel spongy even under hard braking which helps to build confidence when it comes to going fast.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Wheel

It comes to a stop from the 70 MPH mark at a distance of 185ft. Even though this Volkswagen covers maximum ground distance before coming to a halt, it is difficult to declare a certain winner in the segment.

The Kia Forte and the Mazda Mazda3 Sport make use of similar-sized brakes that help them record class-leading braking stats at 176 and 173ft respectively. The braking system on the Hyundai Elantra SE is nimble that renders a total halting distance of 179ft, thanks to its lightweight chassis.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Ride and Handling

A ride in the Volkswagen Jetta is quite comfortable as well as reassuring. The 1.4 L engine accords the car with decent acceleration and an independent rear suspension which is now a standard offering in every trim provides an all-round driving experience. The Jetta is not one of those cars that may not excel in a particular driving aspect rather it fairs well in every segment, making overall driving performance pleasing and comfortable.

High-end models like the SEL or the GLI trim, with more powerful engines, make the Jetta a fun car to drive. The powertrain and suspension feel better than before and make the Jetta a perfect choice as a daily driver. Its suspension has been tuned quite well to handle rough road situation but also offer you a sporty drive. The steering offers a good amount of feedback from the road which makes it feel quite nimble.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Fuel Economy

8.3/10

The Volkswagen Jetta may lag behind its competitors in the acceleration and deceleration tests its economical fuel figures allow it to maintain its competitive edge. Giving 28 miles per gallon in the city and 40 miles per gallon on the highway, making a combined of 33 mpg, the Jetta promises to be the most fuel-efficient car in its segment. However, as one chooses a powerful variant, fuel efficiency is bound to deteriorate.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Interior

7.0/10

The cabin of the Volkswagen Jetta is certainly not the most luxurious place to be in with the leatherette seats and hard plastics. It lacks premium features that are standard in other cars in the segment like a leather steering wheel and power-adjustable driver’s seat but it is quite practical. Everything feels well put together on the inside and ergonomics is also well sorted. While all-around visibility is quite good, you sit low that might feel a bit bothersome on rough roads. The bucket seats hold you well in place and offer a fatigue-free driving experience. The most premium part of the cabin is the leather-wrapped steering wheel that offers a sporty feel and higher trims offer premium features like 6-way power-adjustable seats.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Dashboard

Volkswagen Jetta offers ample space on the inside and can seat 5 passengers without any difficulty. Total passenger volume available inside the Jetta stands at 94.1 cubic feet and the amount of total head, shoulder, and legroom at the front and rear are quite easy to live with.

  • 6-way manual front seat adjustments
  • 4 one-touch power windows
  • Audio and cruise controls on steering wheel
  • Overhead console with storage
  • Keyless ignition
  • Electric power steering
  • Rearview camera
  • Dual vanity mirrors
  • Interior air filtration

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Infotainment system

The infotainment system on the Volkswagen Jetta isn’t praiseworthy and wouldn’t impress the tech-savvy person in you. It features a composition color touchscreen that comes connected to a 4-speaker system and has connectivity features like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The 6.1 inch screen feels quite easy to use but also feels basic.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Infotainment System

 Other infotainment features include:

  • 4 Total speakers
  • Auxiliary Audio Input and USB with external media control

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Cargo Capacity

The cargo capacity is yet another strong suit of the Volkswagen Jetta S and supports a total of 15.7 cubic feet. Despite the trunk housing a spare tire, the Jetta provides best-in-class cargo capacity. The loading sill is not on the higher side which makes loading and unloading the luggage a breezy affair.

The new Volkswagen Jetta borrows some of its designing elements from its sister brand the Audi. The Jetta looks understated and unruffled, underlining the conservative design language that VW is known for. The base trim features halogen lamps with LED daytime running lights that help Volkswagen with overall cost-cutting, however, the SEL and GLI trim feature LED taillights and fog lights.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Front Angle View

The Jetta is just as heavy as the competition car, Mazda3 sport weighing a little less than 3000 lbs. The Jetta comes in, on average, 2.5 inches longer than the competition cars resulting in the larger space back in the trunk. The width of the car is 70 inches and the height at 56.6 inches. While the wheelbase is shorter as compared to other cars at 104.4 inches, it does not compromise on space for the rear passengers.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Safety

7.1/10

The Jetta stays true to the German brand’s safety standards and packs the car with an extensive list of advanced safety features.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Sedan Crash Test

It scores an overall rating of 5 stars in the NHTSA side and frontal crash tests and scores fairly in the IIHS crash tests as well. Some of the safety features include:

  • Driver and front passenger, front and side thorax airbag supplemental restraint system
  • Crash-optimized front end
  • Front seat safety belt pretensioners with load limiters
  • LATCH child seat anchor points
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), and Engine Brake Assist (EBA)

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Competition

8.3/10

Kia Forte LX vs Volkswagen Jetta

The 2017 Kia Forte is relatively newer in the market as compared to the Volkswagen Jetta’s decade-long heritage. It features a 2.0L I4 engine that produces 147hp of power and 132lb.-ft of torque and even with lesser power output grants the car with better acceleration figures.

2017 Kia Forte LX

It sports better passenger volume and has better braking stats. However, the Jetta triumphs with its better handling and fuel efficiency and gains a competitive advantage over the Jetta.

Mazda 3 Sport vs Volkswagen Jetta

The Sedan trim of the Mazda3, dubbed as Sport, gives competition to the Volkswagen Jetta. Mazda3 has the I-4 engine that produces 155 horsepower @ 6000 rpm, a tad more than what Jetta S and SE trim produces, and hence has the faster acceleration.

2017 Mazda 3 Sport

The Mazda outshines the Jetta with its well-built interior and catchy exterior design. However, on the flip side, the new Mazda 3 has lesser cargo capacity and lower fuel efficiency, both of which are determining factors while purchasing a family sedan.

Hyundai Elantra SE vs Volkswagen Jetta

In the battle against the Elantra, the Volkswagen Jetta emerges victorious. While the Elantra and Jetta are quite similar in dimensions, fuel efficiency, and cargo capacity, it is the driving experience that one gets with the Jetta that makes it a viable purchase option. The new Hyundai Elantra is rough to drive and has subpar handling quality.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Final Verdict

The Volkswagen Jetta stands true to its decade-long legacy with economical powertrains, 5-star safety ratings, and the most spacious cabin in its class. The latest iteration features a better suspension and higher fuel economy which make the driving experience smooth and hassle-free. However, Volkswagen's attempt at cost-cutting is evident in the Jetta. The halogens bulbs instead of LED lights and inferior interior quality might upset some buyers, but the Jetta still holds potential as a family sedan. The Volkswagen Jetta is best suited for those who want impeccable ride quality and an enjoyable ride with a little compromise on the interior quality.
