2021 Volkswagen Arteon Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: October 12, 2020

Art speaks where words can not and so does Arteon! Combining the best of both worlds like a boss, the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon is a hatchback, giving you benefits and feels of a full-sized sedan and resembling a coupe-like roof! It is said to be the most extravagant offering by the company and is a well-balanced combination of lavishness and feasibility.

The 2021 Arteon is offered in three trim levels: SE, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line. Stick with the base SE model if you’re looking for value. It offers a lot of standard features for its sub-$38,000 starting price. Looking for luxuries? You’ll want to upgrade to the SEL Premium, which gets up to $42,000. Every Arteon is motivated by a 268-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Arteon was first exhibited and launched in 2017 for Europe, and then in 2018, it entered the USA. Since then, it has never looked back and is only coming out progressive. Arteon has the word Art in it, and its body truly flows like one! For the 2021 iteration, Volkswagen has decided to add to your delight by bringing subtle changes both outside and inside. The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon comes out more potent in front of other prominent names like Cadillac CT4, Infiniti Q50, BMW 3 Series, and Nissan Maxima.

2021 Volkswagen Arteon Features

7.0/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon will be available in 3 configurations: SE, SEL-R Line, and SEL Premium R-Line. The engine and transmission are standard for all the trims. The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon will have a starting price of about $37,000 for the SE trim and will go up to about $48,000 for the SEL Premium R-LINE. As standard, the Arteon gets some of the best features like heated front seats, panoramic sunroof, and many more.

The official announcements concerning prices have not been made yet, but we do not expect many hikes in them. This year, since everything has been upscaled, every trim will only get better, and you will notice the differences between them.

2021 Volkswagen Arteon Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

It looks thoroughly contemporary from the outside, but there’s plenty of shared engineering under the skin of the Arteon, all of which suggests it shouldn’t provide too many headaches on the reliability front. Although the German carmaker hasn’t always enjoyed the most considerable reputation in this area, reliability should not be a big concern. The long list of driver-assistance technologies on offer ensures the Arteon is a very safe car, too, with excellent results in independent crash-testing.

You can always check consumer reviews for feedback, but if numbers are your thing, we are here to tell you that the U.S News gives the VW Arteon a 7.7 out of 10, and it has been ranked number 9 out of 20 Luxury Small Cars. The J.D.Power has given the Arteon a reliability score of 3 out of 5, which is more than just fair.

The average cost of the Volkswagen Arteon across the U.S. comes out to be around $43,785. The price of individual vehicles differs for different states, mainly due to factors like destination charges, sales tax, and individual dealership discounts. The people from the states of Atlanta, New Hampshire, Oregon, Montana, and Delaware enjoy the best prices as the sales tax is exempted from these states.

Warranty

You just keep calm and drive! The VW Arteon is liberal with warranties. A good warranty ensures that you are not worried about your vehicle day and night and makes the selling game stronger. Following is the warranty scheme associated with 2021 VW Arteon Sedan:

Basic

Four years or 50000 miles whichever is earlier

Corrosion

Seven years or 100000 miles whichever is earlier

Drivetrain

Four years or 50000 miles whichever is earlier

Maintenance

Two years or 20000 miles whichever is earlier

Roadside Assistance

Three years or 36000 miles whichever is earlier

The VW Arteon comes with Volkswagen’s standard three-year/60,000-mile warranty. This used to be standard fare, buy BMW and Mercedes because they offer three year cover with unlimited mileage.

Miles per Dollar

The price per gallon is expected to be $2.57. For a year, that can mean approximately $1400-$1500. Not bad!

2021 Volkswagen Arteon Buying Advice

As far as the buying advice is concerned, we suggest the mid-level trim that is the R-line trim. It looks stronger than the base trim with those big air intakes, new exterior color options, and better bumpers. It also has more exciting features inside and stands neither too high nor too low in your budget. So it ticks off all relevant checkboxes very smoothly.

On the other hand, you’ll want to upgrade to the SEL Premium if you’re looking for luxuries like ventilated seats and hands-free parking assist.

Is buying a used Arteon a good idea?

No wonders, VW Arteon is your everyday family car, and we won’t tell you to say no to a good deal, but before you buy a used one, check for its warranty and see that it does not require much service and maintenance. Otherwise, it will eat up all your finances with a frequent maintenance schedule.

The only significant difference between the 2019 and 2020 Arteon is the warranty. Volkswagen covers the 2019 model with a six-year/72,000-mile warranty, whereas 2020 models come with a four-year/50,000-mile warranty. We recommend starting your search with a 2019 model, which will likely cost less than a new Arteon.

2021 Volkswagen Arteon Engine and Performance

7.0/10

Dynamic Chassis Control knows and does its job well for the Arteon. Power distribution at the front and rear ends is apt. What is body roll? You will hardly know when inside a VW Arteon, the engine does give rowdy feels time and again. Overall the handling is impressive. It may not be very athletic, but it is an all-rounder.

What is under the hood of the Arteon?

Under the hood, the Arteon has a 2.0L Turbocharged Inline 4 engine, just like the predecessor coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Together they successfully crank out 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

The power is taken to the front wheels via a standard eight-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic shifting; 4Motion all-wheel drive is available on SEL R-Line models and standard on SEL Premium R-Line models.

The output game of Arteon is better than expected figures for Cadillac CT4 and BMW 3 series but lags behind Infiniti Q50 and Nissan Maxima. Stacking up Arteon against CT5, we see that Arteon's engine yields more output.

2021 Volkswagen Arteon Sedan Acceleration and Braking Performance

If you want a good acceleration, go for AWD drivetrain. FWD is not for speed! The Arteon FWD transports you from rest to 60 MPH in 6 seconds, one of the lowest figures compared to the rivals. Only Nissan Maxima stands behind Arteon, saving it from the tag of the ‘slowest.’ With a top speed of 149 mph, it can cover a quarter-mile in 14.5 seconds. Facepalm!

With ABS, the braking performance is up-to-the-mark and respects your dependence! The front rotors of the brakes are 13.4 inches, and it stops from 60 MPH to zero in 114 feet. The Arteon is more planted and stable when pushed than most midsize competitors. It's not exciting, but there's a lot of confidence and predictability.

2021 Volkswagen Arteon Fuel Economy

4.0/10

While FWD is not suited for acceleration, it gives you better fuel efficiency. So that’s the trade-off you see. It delivers 22 mpg on city roads, 31 while cruising on the highway, making up 26 mpg combined. The all-wheel-drive Arteon is rated at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, 23 combined. Only BMW 3 series here stands like a king delivering a combined MPG of 30.

2021 Volkswagen Arteon Interior

6.0/10

Well laid out and well proportioned. The inside of the Arteon looks so stately. The upgrades give it a new soul and give you all the more reason to crack a smile. Start counting what all has changed. Say hi to new fabrics and leather inserts here and there that sprinkle newness like confetti. The dashboard looks all revamped, and so does the center console.

2021 Volkswagen Arteon Hatchback Front Seats

Make the best use of that panoramic sunroof on bright days and ambient lighting for light mood days! Three-zone climate controls also ensure that you stay cheered up. The R-line gets a sport steering wheel. The front seats are heated and ventilated and are massaging. The car is amply accommodating for five passengers. It has the maximum legroom for the rear seats compared to the adversaries, as shown below.

How is the infotainment system?

For delivering your information and entertainment, the audio/video interfaces feel innate. It’s a smart vehicle loaded with innovative technologies for giving you uninterrupted connectivity. The digital display is 10.25 inches, and the infotainment system is 8 inches. It now has touch controls and all-urban feels. They didn’t even spare the air-conditioning controls! They have received a change too. Standard features include:

2021 Volkswagen Arteon Exterior

7.0/10

It looks gorgeous and artful. The outsides of the 2021 VW Arteon sedan will be arrested as you watch that long spun body carrying those sharp lines. The grille is now illuminated, and the front bumpers are new. You will love the addition of three new chrome bars. Their color pallet is also generous this year.

2021 Volkswagen Arteon Hatchback  Third Quarter View

You can now have Red metallic paint for your chosen model and have Oryx White and Lapiz Blue for the R-line trim. The LED headlamps and tail lamps, the 19 and 20-inch wheels, all look honed too. Apart from this, some significant distinctions have been kept for trims. For example, two additional air intakes for SE trim and a larger intake opening for the R-line trim. Very thoughtful, VW!

As if all these were not enough to impress us, even the badge and lettering designs have been worked upon for this year! If everything’s new, so should the identification be!

Looking at the dimensions below, you’ll have a fair idea that the Arteon is a sedan-hulk! It has a maximum curb weight of 3854lbs. But it is well distributed throughout its extended body.

2021 Volkswagen Arteon Safety

Don’t know what inspired VW this year, but they are flooding us with surprises and upgrades and most of it is in the safety department. It has pledged to assist the driver better! The upgraded safety features include:

  • Dynamic Road Sign Display
  • Travel assist system and Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Blind Spot monitoring
  • Automated Emergency Braking
  • Pre Collision system
  • Post Collision system
  • Updated Rear View camera
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Park Assist

Aren’t these all the essential and advanced features? Also, the 2020 Arteon has received a ‘good’ rating from the IIHS, and now we are double sure about the safety concerns.

2021 Volkswagen Arteon Competition

Volkswagen Arteon Vs. Infiniti Q50

While Infiniti has better output and acceleration, Arteon is good with fuel efficiency and cargo space. Infiniti Q50 has some extra things like Wifi-hotspot and driver-adjustable lumbar. But then, Arteon has a passenger adjustable lumbar! We are not here to baffle you. What we mean to say is, you should have a test drive and decide in this case!

Infiniti Q50

Volkswagen Arteon Vs BMW 3 series

We love the bimmer. And this is not just because of that luxury badge, but because it's an all-rounder. It gives smooth and athletic rides like a pro and is versatile. While the horsepower figures shout louder for the Arteon, everything else is better in the case of the BMW 3 series, be it acceleration, space, or fuel-efficiency. The price for BMW is no doubt higher than the Arteon, but BMW justifies it inside and out!

Volkswagen Arteon Vs Nissan Maxima

While Maxima has a more powerful engine, it has sub-par acceleration and fuel efficiency. The rear seats for Maxima are cramped too. Arteon is a large car (and can actually be addressed as a full-sized sedan) with more practicality. Perfunctory nods for Arteon here!

Nissan Maxima

2021 Volkswagen Arteon Final Verdict

6.2/10

VW has always been loved for its space and practicality, and that is something you can be relieved of. It is a car that you can count on. It wins your confidence and handles your dependability exceptionally well. Who doesn't like upgrades! It is offering you so much and so generously this year. Be it looks, be it feels, or be it technology; it is covering every segment well. The new, better, and improved Arteon is on its way, and we think it will be worth the wait.
