As a result, the truck feels short of breath on sharp inclines.

Although the 3.5L setup runs placidly most of the time, it lacks the grunt of a pickup and is just like any other naturally aspirated V6 that can be found in cars nowadays. Yes, being an offroader, AWD comes as a standard fitment along with the sport-tuned Blistein shocks and an optional 6-Speed manual transmission, which is undoubtedly a feature to be celebrated. In terms of comparison, it seems like the Honda Ridgeline shares the same powertrain and thus the power figures, while Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 extracts the most horses from its 3.6L. On the other hand, Ford Ranger remains the only truck to house a modern air intake spitting out the best torque figures.

Despite the virtues of this drivetrain, acceleration may not reveal the best of results for the Tacoma TRD Off-Road, especially with the automatic transmission, which though smooth, is a little inconsistent. Precisely, the gearbox is perfectly smooth sometimes, while other times, particularly when you're deep in the throttle, upshifts can be a bit hammering. It's also reluctant to drop gears, requiring a healthy prod to summon a downshift.

That's a pretty unspectacular score, as we have observed a couple of mpg better than that in full-size trucks before, ones that are far more spacious, comfortable and powerful than this Toyota. The sad thing about small trucks is that they come with less than average anthropometry. The Tacoma TRD Off-Road is the best example of such a shortcoming. As robust as it looks from the outside, the pickup is well short of space on the inside. Starting with the front row, if you happen to be on the taller side, the lowered roof is bound to make your head uncomfortable, as are the low lying seats, that undermine the thigh support, allowing your feet to fall numb shortly. Moreover, with the backrest angled rearward more than one would imagine, the head will still be practically touching the roof. Thus, even when fitted with a leather-trimmed, 10-way-adjustable chair, it basically feels like you're plopped on the floor.

Tacoma engineers have tried hard enough to lift the cabin’s positivity by being kind enough to include a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, but their efforts were in vain since the wheel only moves around an inch and a half in any direction. This travel is so limited it renders this feature almost useless. Rear occupancy too, is not more settling, with the datasheet suggesting rear legroom of 32.6” forging a cramped posture for adults. On the positive side, the Tacoma TRD Off-Road scores highly in terms of practicality and cargo space. The door pockets are large, there's a smattering of cubbies on the center console, and the rear seat's divided lower cushion flips up to reveal some hidden bins.

Despite its overall strength, Tacoma falls short of its rivals in terms of cabin space though. Headroom and legroom in both the rows are least in the segment and taller passengers might feel a little cumbersome in longer trips. Overall, Honda Ridgeline offers a decent cabin space than rivals. Not a big grouse though as this segment does not prefer more space in the cabin, instead should prefer a longer bed for carrying goods.

Standing at the tip of success, the Tacoma TRD Off-Road extends a few more functionalities towards the standard equipment list for the 2020 model year. Speaking of infotainment, the fun begins with an 8.0” touchscreen interface mounted right in the center and one that now comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay across all the variants except the base SR trim.

Handling audio, telephony, and other functions is an infotainment system that's as familiar as it is unremarkable. Although the channel moves at its own pace and the menu layout won't win any awards for intuitiveness or good looks, it's at least adequate for the job. Pinch-to-zoom on the available navigation system's map, however, is surprisingly responsive. Some highlights of the inherited infotainment system are as follows:

The Tacoma TRD from Toyota is nothing like any other pickup in terms of exterior styling with ample amenities and accessories that would make it look apart from the crowd. At the same time, the 2020 model will be mildly updated with refreshed grille designs, new wheel choices, and a LED headlight treatment. Apart from that, Toyota also adds a new color to the palette - Army Green, which makes the all-terrain personality of the Japanese pickup more prominent to one’s eyes as soon as the truck sets its feet in front of you.

Since there are so many Tacomas out there on American soil, it should come as no surprise if the truck is even recognizable from the horizon. Jokes apart, however, the Tacoma TRD has seriously taken a big chunk out of the automotive midsize pickups sales, owing to the reliable repo of the brand. Getting back to the topic, the Tacoma TRD gets full LED headlights now along with a strip of chrome circulating the large black grille placed with a giant radiator at the other end. Besides, the availability of windshield de-icer and heated ORVMs make it the optimal option in cold regions of Alaska. On the other hand, a curtailed wheel size of 16” is a bit surprising given that it has been obsolete for ages.

Although all the pickups in this lot are quite competitive in terms of exterior styling, there is hardly any room for making a distinguished design, given that all are small pickups. However, because of its typical raw Asian flavor, the Tacoma TRD does set itself apart. The Toyota Tacoma TRD is quite long compared to rivals and also has better ground clearance than rivals. The wide and tall stance of Tacoma makes it bulkier and looks like a monster. The same is with Ford Ranger, the height of the Ranger is above all other machines in the lot here. The Ridgeline is quite wide and offers great width as well. However, when it comes to overall ruggedness, the Tacoma TRD slays them all with its best in class ground clearance.

As for the safety inspired tech, Toyota Safety Sense-P comes standard on all Tacomas. This includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is optional, though lane-centering is not offered. Toyota's implementation of adaptive cruise control works as intended, matching the speed of surrounding traffic and maintaining a safe following distance. It's smooth and quite responsive. As usual, the lane-departure-alert system is a little annoying, reminding you every so often of how bad you are at driving. Fortunately, it's easy enough to disable. 

The NHTSA and IIHS are yet to test the TRD variant of the Tacoma, however, results from the basic model reveal that Tacoma’s armor is highly impregnable. On a precise scale, it scored 4 whole stars out of 5 in terms of occupant safety, while the IIHS ranked the Japanese design as safe from life-threatening hazards in its own peculiar way. Meddling the systemized line up of Tacoma trucks, the TRD Off-Road Access Cab came to make wonders on the sales charts despite its numerous shortcomings. Most natural of those being the extravagance of the truck, which stands at a considerably higher price than one that ideally suits the overall performance of the vehicle. Perhaps, the tag carries the weight of the unmatched after-sales and ownership experience of Toyota. In any case, the Tacoma feels a bit short footed for this segment of trucks, despite its boisterous aesthetic appeal.

Not thrifty

Pros - Towing, warm seats, Snow drives

Cons - I'm not satisfied with the mileage

As a truck owner, my basic necessities are fulfilled with no problems. I have towed, took long routes and even treaded to a couple of ghost towns and it never let me down. Took care of me and drove me back home safely. The only thing I would like to improve if possible is to give it a nice bash of gas efficiency As a truck owner, my basic necessities are fulfilled with no problems. Got the 4wd which has a nice connection with tires and based on the conditions, it distributes the power to all four wheels. Got the warm seat at front with an added package worth 4.3k I have chosen my favorite Barcelona red color for the exterior which looks absolutely ravishing with the dark upholstery inside Came with tons of features like a backup camera, collision sensor, and lane departures along with many other driver assited active ones ensuring the safety of the occupants where ever we drive it. 4wd also has some impact there Depends how you see it Along with gas, it takes a good 700+ dollars a month The salesperson was patient and helped a lot to get us approved and even reworked the price

Pros - Auto high beam, GPS navigation, utility

Cons - Underpowered, mileage

Not sure what should I be more worried about, Tacoma's underpowered nature or mediocre mpg numbers. Loaded with convenience features, Tacoma is all about the pink stuff. Toyota's TRD needs some new definitions in my opinion Not sure what should I be more worried about, Tacoma's underpowered nature or mediocre mpg numbers. All about pink stuff and convenience features where the cornerstone (basic driveability) has been completely overseen I like the Bluetooth figures that help to attend the call and dial call hand freely. GPS navigation is also another useful which gives insights about the traffic. At least Toyota has got it right on the inside Entirely body setup of the truck clearly rises to the most robust design. For the record, it looks more than how it drives Not that its not safe. Has some problems but none in this area Tacoma lacks that truck-ish power but stays intact with the poor mileage. Pricing above 32k, I don't think there is anything that justifies the figures The overall experience was okay but driving this truck for past few months have now made me rethink about my visits there

Average truck with not so average pricing

Pros - Power tailgate, price, Suspension

Cons - Low end torque, no diesel engine option, Safety

Good travel suspension results in very smooth driving quality. Sports tuned double-wishbone does a good job in driving dynamics but the engine itself ceases to impress me. A pickup truck should come with a good low-end torque that Tacoma fails in. The low-end grunt remains blunt and plain and gunning up the engine is needed to attain that desirable power band. I was also surprised when I learned Toyota hasn't provided a diesel engine option for Tacoma neither have the reworked the efficiency part which still makes the Tacoma stay in the list of average efficient trucks of 2019-20 Good travel suspension results in very smooth driving quality. Sports tuned double-wishbone does a good job in driving dynamics but the engine itself ceases to impress me. A few options including a blackout appearance package & power tailgate(the best one) costing an additional 1.5K. Interiors are not something carved out of Alcantara and instead designed how they exactly should be. It reminds me of Dodge warlock of the ‘70s (a huge fan) and that's the best compliment I can throw at the interiors of Tacoma. No sign of chrome anywhere on the body or front grille. Because of the blackout appearance package, it has a unique dark mien even with the blue finish on the body. Just 4 stars from the safety bureau was one more reason why leasing seemed to be better than buying Mieage is on the lower side and that's about it. Reliability experience has been good so far but we still have a long way together. Lets see how it proves to be. With Signing amount as low as $4.3K and $370 monthly payment for lease, Tacoma makes us forget about its driving flaws. The experience was hasslefree and the deal for leasing was equally good. It's Tacoma itself that doesn't stay true to it's name.

A few sporty upgrades to the regular sports trim makes it stand out in looks and enhances the overall driving experience. The exhaust could do a little better with that muscular grunt to confirm the upgrades. The low-end torque could have been a little better with such a refined motor.

Everything is flawless

It drives smooth and easy because of all the features. The visibility is good and the best part about our new Tacoma is that my wife also drives it easily. Couldn’t have asked for a better pickup truck.
