2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Buying Advice

As for our recommendation, we'd suggest you go for the TRD Off-Road trim as it gets you a lot of equipment such as an electronic locking rear differential, TRD-tuned off-road suspension with Bilstein shocks, and much more. We'd also suggest you get the 3.5L V6 engine paired to the 6-speed manual transmission, as the automatic's clumsy behavior is not worth the extra penny.

2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Engine and Performance

8.0/10

"The Tacoma's optional V-6 engine provides decent performance and towing muscle, but the base four-cylinder is underpowered and best avoided." - Car and Driver

The 2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab offers two engine options - a 2.7L inline-4 and a 3.5L V6 engine. The base 2.7L Inline-4 engine is not-so-impressive and generates a power output of 159 hp and a torque output of 180 lb-ft. This engine is only available in the base SR and SR5 trim levels.

2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab's 3.5L V6 engine.

The second engine offered by Tacoma that comes as an option in lower trims and standard in upper trims provides a more capable 3.5L V6 engine generating 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. Both engines come paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission as a standard.

The Toyota Tacoma packs enough grunt to measure terrains with the utmost ease.

The V6 engine gives an option for a 6-speed manual transmission too. As usual, the 2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab will also be available in both 2WD and 4WD drivetrain options for almost all trim levels, except the range-topping TRD Pro that gets a standard 4WD drivetrain.

2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Interior

8.0/10

"The controls are logical and straightforward, including the large infotainment screen and the recently redesigned knobs and physical shortcut buttons." - Edmunds

There’s not much to talk about in terms of the 2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab’s interiors. There haven’t been many changes in the interiors for the past two years, and opening the wide and heavy door of this pickup truck will not supposedly bring any smile to your face. The quality of materials used is lackluster, which might be in tune with a pickup’s ruggedness but is in no way admirable

The Tacoma's cabin is mostly covered in cheap-looking plastics.

Most of Tacoma's interior surfaces are covered in plastic that looks and feels cheap, moreover, the asymmetrical layout further axes down the excitement. The upper (read expensive) trims do feel a bit better than the lower trims, yet they barely touch the "impressive" milestone.

The 2021 Toyota Tacoma's rear seats feel cramped.

Getting to the space factor, the Tacoma Double Cab gets enough room to welcome up to 5 passengers, however, it's not the warmest of the welcomes here. The rear legroom is fine but can be claimed as cramped for tall passengers. The overall space however is not bad at all and seating 5 people in comfort is not a difficult task.

The infotainment system for Tacoma has already been updated for its 2020 model. So, for the year 2021, the Tacoma’s infotainment would be outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen display in its base trim level, and for all its upper trim levels, it has been provided with an 8-inch touchscreen display.

Along with this, the infotainment system comes integrated with Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Safety Connect, Bluetooth, SiriusXM, and a 2-inch multi-information display.

2021 Toyota Tacoma gets a standard 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display

The standard audio system features a 6-speaker surround system, while the JBL premium sound system is also available on upper trim levels. Several USB ports and a wireless charging device are also available. Unfortunately, Tacoma still doesn't offer a mobile hotspot, which has been provided by most of its rivals.

Some of the prominent interior and infotainment features of the 2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab are:

  • Outside temperature display
  • Air conditioning
  • 3 USB ports
  • Fabric-trimmed seats
  • 4-way adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support

"Base SR trucks are spartan in look, while TRD Pro editions crank up the visual volume to 11.' - TheCarConnection

The 2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab dons typical truck-like styling with a boxy, bold, and upright shape. It has an imposing stance and appears rugged. The front-end is characterized by a big and upright grille and standard projector-beam headlights. The company also offers the option of getting a hood scoop, that further accentuates the brute look of the Tacoma.

The side profile flaunts moderately curved fenders and a very definite crease that flows towards the back lends the truck a sense of proportion. A high-rise floor and chunky tires highlight functionality while the sculpted hood enhances sturdiness. At the back, the stamped tailgate conventionally wraps the short bed.

While the lower trims of the Tacoma Double Cab are truly utilitarian with blunt and no-nonsense styling, the TRD variants surely up the ante with blacked-out trim, TRD badges, and bulky tires. Further, you can also check out the Toyota Tacoma Trail-Edition model that gets unique 16-inch TRD-style wheels, black exterior badges, and a contrasting front grille.

The Toyota Tacoma Double Cab's price undercuts the Ford F-150 Supercab's price of $36,650. The Toyota Tacoma gets a 3.5L V6 engine while the F-150 fares with a bit smaller 3.3L V6, yet the Ford surpasses the Tacoma in terms of power figures.

2021 Ford F-150 SuperCrew

Ford F-150 fares better in terms of its engine and performance than the Toyota Tacoma Double Cab. Its fan following is already a lot, and with a better braking and fuel economy, it is only bound to increase. The only area where Toyota Tacoma fares better is acceleration and initial pick up.

2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab vs 2020 Chevrolet Colorado Double Cab

A Toyota Tacoma Double cab is cheaper than the Chevrolet Colorado to procure and to maintain as well. The Chevrolet Colorado is several times better than the Tacoma in terms of muscle, and while the Tacoma's grunt feels enough, Colorado feels punchy and more engaging to drive.

2021 Chevrolet Colorado Double Cab

Be it acceleration or towing capacity, the Chevrolet Colorado performs better than the Tacoma in all aspects. However, the Tacoma clutches back the game with better fuel efficiency and greater payload capacity.

2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab vs 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab

The 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab 4.3L V6 comes at a starting price of $35,695, which is slightly higher than the 2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab's price. However, at a slightly higher price, the GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab offers the best in class acceleration, towing, and payload capacities.

2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab

The GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab also offers a more spacious interior that looks as well as feels much better than Tacoma's cabin. However, the GMC also charges its premium as its comparatively one of the least fuel-efficient and most expensive trucks to own in this segment.

2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Final Verdict

For off-roaders out there, the Toyota Tacoma could be a treat for you all. However, when it comes to performance, towing, and payload capacities, there are a lot of rivals in the market that offer a better deal than the Toyota Tacoma Double Cab. While Toyota's reliability record is a feat in itself, we suggest you check out other options as well before making the final call.

My wife's pathetic truck

Pros - Not much if I have to be honest

Cons - Well things like price/power/ground clearance

Toyota tacoma is underpowered and doesn't have what it takes to be called a good pickup After driving nearly 4 pickups in a row, my wife decided to go with this girlish and sissy truck which has nothing on display. Underpowered and short of good ground clearance. When hauling stuff in bed, the suspension looks like it won't take it The interiors are a little comfortable but I guess that's not what trucks are for. I have had a two fords and know what real pickups are supposed to do The design looks way more aggressive than it actually is under than skin Safety is going to be real problem if my wife decided to blast it on bad roads. Empty The pricing isn't justified at all counting all the pros it comes up with. NONE It felt good at first but looking at our purchase, I don't trust them anymore

The Reliable Japanese truck.

Pros - Valiant looks,Big stock wheels,Automatic Limited-Slip Differential

Cons - Floppy transmission, rear seat contraints

For those who are looking for a relaible daily truck. I mainly use this truck for rides through my farm and hauling medium sized farm equipments. This truck performs well on those slight offraod conditions providing me with adiquate power, comfort and allround visibility which were the only things I was looking forward in my truck. LED headlights,deck-mounted AC power outlet,Fiber-reinforced Composite inner bed, Not the most luxurious cabin out there but has that robust and built to last feeling that generally all Toyotas seem to have. The design of this truck strikes the balance for me as it has all the macho feel to it without the sence of being overdone at any point of the design like many of the new American trucks. Majority of the equipments are standard fitment. These cars do run strong for years. Pretty cheap for a full sizes truck They where so welcoming.

Pros - Brawny front end ,spaceous bed, offroad uprated mecahnicals

Cons - Low interior quality, basic equipment list, mediodre seating comfort

The reliable work horse. It is my work truck helping me out carry all my contruction equipments on the its long bed.I did go for the two door as I was not looking forward to carry passengers, and would also double as a space to store smaller fragile equipments.equipments Charcoal grille with chrome surround, four adjustable tie-down,16" wheels The interior is designed to be utilitarian and that is what it is.Everyhting is laid out sensibly with tactile buttons.Though the drawback is a historic feeling cabin with limited rear ocupant legroom. Externally this truck is not as flashy as the other competitors and thus exudes a real sence of capability, ruggedness and the confidence to take it to the extreme without the fear of damaging your preciuos bodywork. You get most of the kit as on the higher trims. Its a Toyota. Had to pay close to 35k,but it gets the jb done. If you want a great sales rep that doesnt give you any BS. Ask for Eric Duffy great guy.
