Updated for the year 2020, the Toyota Tacoma, a mid-size pickup truck is in its third generation which was introduced back in 2016. The Tacoma is a cult among enthusiasts thanks to the reliability it offered. With numerous powertrains on offer, which include the likes of the 2.7L four-cylinder and the 3.5L V6, prices for the Tacoma start at an MSRP of $26,050.

With the best rating of 7.4 on 10, 2020 Toyota Tacoma gets a host of feature updates both on the exterior and interior front. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now offered along with a bigger and better infotainment screen as standard throughout the trim lineup. On the outside, new wheels, LED headlights and a revised front grille adorn the Tacoma.

Overall Rating

The 2020 Tacoma gets a total of 6 trims, namely SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-road, Limited, and TRD Pro. At the base of the Tacoma lineup is its Access Cab which is offered in 2 trims with up to 4 variants. It serves as the gateway to Toyota’s offering of mid-size pickup trucks. The year though is 2020 so even the base Tacoma Access Cab has been made a lot more appealing. It gets a redesigned exterior and modern updates in the infotainment department.

The 2020 Toyota Tacoma starts a little over $26,000. Features offered include a 7-inch touchscreen and adjustable front row seats as standard, while a 3.5-liter V6 is available as an option throughout the range. These features allow it to challenge the mettle of incredibly able pickups of its segment like the Ford F-150 Regular Cab and the Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab.

2020 Toyota Tacoma Pricing and Features

7.5/10

For the year 2020, the Access Cab model of the Toyota Tacoma is available in two basic trims and two V6-powered variants of the same. So there are a total of four versions to choose from. They include SR, SR5 and SR V6, SR5 V6, and Limited trims. Besides this, all variants get rear-wheel drivetrain as standard with the available choice of the all-wheel-drive unit across the lineup. Other standard features include Toyota’s Safety Sense, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit.

The SR V6 variant of the 2020 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab is the most feasible choice of all. It gets the invigorating V6 with the option of a manual gearbox besides more upmarket features like adjustable drivers and front passenger seats. For a price of under $30,000 for the rear-wheel-drive variant, the SR V6 is a lucrative package.

2020 Toyota Tacoma Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The base SR and SR5 variants of the Toyota Tacoma Access Cab get a feeble-minded 2.7-liter inline four-cylinder engine under their hood. That four-pot manages to release 159 hp and 180 lb.-ft. torque and comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The other SR V6 and SR5 V6 models get a bigger 3.5-liter V6. Besides the standard six-speed automatic, this V6 also comes with an option of a six-speed manual unit. This V6 is capable of making 278 hp and 265 lb.-ft. torque.

Regardless of the choice of powertrain options, RWD is available as standard on this Toyota pickup. The optional all-wheel-drive unit is also available for all models across the range. The 2020 Tacoma Access Cab does shy away from charging off the line, as it takes just about 7.7 seconds to do the 0-60 MPH run, which is nowhere close to being the best in the segment.

The Toyota Tacoma Access Cab makes for a great off-roader. Its tall stance and higher ride height enable it to tackle tracks quite adeptly. Also while off-roading you will not mind bouncing around in this pickup which happens anyway all the time courtesy of its independent front suspension and leaf-spring rear axle. The suspension setup on the Tacoma Access Cab translates most blows from underneath into the cabin. At the same time, the tall height returns a top-heavy feel. The steering wheel though is well weighted to provide the kind of feedback needed to maneuver this Toyota around.

What about the 2020 Toyota Tacoma's towing capacity?

All shortcomings of a pickup can be ignored as long as it can tow your load and the Toyota Tacoma Access Cab can. As a matter of fact, for the year 2020, this pickup from Toyota is more capable than before.

Sure the base 2.7-liter four-cylinder is less than useful but the 3.5-liter V6 makes a world of difference in its abilities. Also if you pair that V6 with the 6-speed manual, you can even more utility out of the Tacoma Access Cab.

At 1620 cubic feet, the payload capacity of the Toyota Tacoma Access Cab isn’t very impressive but the 6800 cubic feet of towing capacity is well above average. Other pickups in this segment though can tow and carry a lot more load than the Tacoma Access Cab under different settings.

2020 Toyota Tacoma Fuel Economy

7.5/10

Even with the higher capacity of 3.5-liter V6, the 2020 Toyota Tacoma manages to return a combined figure of 20 mpg which further improves its usability. The slack in performance of the Toyota Tacoma Access Cab is more than made up for by its towing and carrying capabilities and also by its fuel efficiency.

What this pickup does not get though is an equally big fuel tank to match. The 21.1-gallon fuel tank is significantly small. That severely affects this Toyota’s practicality and range. Other pickups in this segment might not be as fuel-efficient but get a relatively big fuel tank for enhanced fuel economy.

2020 Toyota Tacoma Interior

6.0/10

Where most mid-size pickups can seat up to three people, the Toyota Tacoma Access Cab can be accessed by four people. But that is about it for this pickup as between the high floor and low roof there remains very limited room to live. The front row is adequately accommodating but not so much for tall passengers. Availability of space in the second row is all the more compromised with legroom being almost non-existent. Even the quality of materials used is lackluster, which might be in tune with a pickup’s ruggedness but is in no way admirable.

A closer look at the interiors of the 2020 Tacoma brings about some of the minor issues that we felt. Interior plastics felt really cheap and could have been made more premium. The interior build quality might only be substandard on the Toyota Tacoma Access Cab but it gets fresh updates in the technology department. Most of them still stick to the older version of Toyota's infotainment unit, although now bigger which comes with Android Auto and AppleCarPlay.

The interiors of the Tacoma have raised some eyebrows, not for the good shall we say. The truck is sparse when it comes to convenience features as standard and we highly recommend that you opt for the premium interior package which brings in leather upholstery and better quality plastics. To make up for the lack of roominess inside the Tacoma Access Cab’s cabin Toyota has equipped this pickup with comfort features like:

  • Outside temperature display
  • Air conditioning
  • 3 USB ports
  • Fabric-trimmed seats
  • 4-way adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support
  • 4-way adjustable front passenger seat
  • Tilt/telescoping steering wheel

2020 Toyota Tacoma Exterior

7.6/10

The 2020 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab easily manages to look like a proper pickup. It has an imposing stance and appears rugged. Upfront the refreshed grille is bold and big. At the sides, the fenders are flared and the rear is that of a contemporary pickup.

A high-rise floor and chunky tires highlight functionality while the sculpted hood enhances sturdiness. At the back, the stamped tailgate conventionally wraps the short bed. In all, the 2020 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab does what isn’t so difficult for a pickup, that is look the part.

At over 4300 pounds the Tacoma Access Cab is still considerably light for a pickup. It does, however have a long wheelbase and is also stretched in length. Ironically, the appearance is limited only to the exterior as the cabin of this Toyota is quite cramped. The pickup-like exterior features of the 2020 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab that give this truck its own character are:

  • Projector-beam headlights with DRLs
  • Dark gray grille with black surrounds
  • Color-keyed power outside mirrors
  • Color-keyed door handles
  • Color-keyed rear bumper
  • 16-inch styled steel wheels
  • Skid plates

2020 Toyota Tacoma Safety

8.0/10

Authorities are yet to crash-test the 2020 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab but they were sure to give the 2019 Tacoma Access Cab a full four-star rating. For the year 2020, Toyota Tacoma Access Cab is equipped with a lot of safety features of which some features are listed below:

  • Toyota Safety Sense
  • Pre-collision system w/Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert
  • Automatic high beams
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Vehicle Stability Control
  • Traction Control
  • ABS w/EBD
  • Advanced Airbag system

2020 Toyota Tacoma Competition

7.5/10

2020 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab vs. 2020 Ford F-150 Regular Cab

Sure the Toyota Tacoma Access Cab manages to look quite as rugged as the F-150 Regular Cab but in no way can it match what that Ford has to offer. Even though the Tacoma Access Cab can seat up to four people, that is only one more than the accommodation available in the F-150 Regular Cab, who will be a lot more comfortable in it.

Then again, the F-150 Regular Cab offers a lot more versatility than the Tacoma Access Cab. Also, the F-150 has better power outputs and gives better fuel economy.

2020 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab vs. 2020 Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab

It can be hard even for the Ford F-150 Regular Cab to reign over the mighty Colorado. It does, however, manage to do so but the Tacoma Access Cab is no F-150 Regular Cab.

Yes, both pickups can seat four people but that is the only thing ranking the Tacoma Access Cab up against the Chevy Colorado Extended Cab. In every other consideration, this Toyota cannot even find a way around that Chevy’s capabilities.

2020 Toyota Tacoma Final Verdict

8.0/10

As a mid-size pickup, the Toyota Tacoma does what it is supposed to do best, tow and haul cargo. It also gets a more modern interior and is more than adequately equipped with safety features in comparison to some of the other pickups of its class. But anything more than that is asking for too much from the Tacoma Access Cab. It is ideal but not so logical.

Love the feeling it gives off at times

Pros - Lots of features in a truck

Cons - The suspension is somewhat sketchy

Modern truck option "For a truck I have rarely seen so many features such as the touchscreen, entertainment system, easy entry and all that being provided from a relatively lower itself. Makes a nice change to get so much. The suspension isn't worth much however and any disturbance on the road can be sharply felt inside." Decent atmosphere, good place, wide range of Tacomas.

Tacoma is the best TRUCK!

Pros - Reliable, powerful, safe

Cons - Heavy, has plastic on touchpoints, tech is old

Simple, clean, and practical The interior is simple, clean, and easy to navigate with omnipresent plastic touchpoints. I believe the styling is great, but the infotainment system and other features are a little slow and feel outdated. Its size makes it perfect to park in almost any standard stall. Overall a very clean-looking truck, comfortable to ride in, reliable for towing capacity and hauling, as well as overall standard bed use.

An amazing truck
