Many People have always been fans of the Toyota Tacoma because of its rugged nature and capabilities. It does the job really well and fits the bill perfectly with its reputation and near bulletproof reliability. The Tacoma boasts 2 engine options paired with either a manual or automatic transmission. It takes on the GMC Canyon, Honda Ridgeline, and the Chevrolet Colorado. Being a part of the GM corporation, Colorado is the same car as the GMC Canyon but in a different "dress". Let's find out how the 2018 Toyota Tacoma fares against its competitors.

2018 Toyota Tacoma Pricing and Features

6.7/10

The 2018 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab is offered in a total of 4 Trims, the SR, SR5, TRD (Toyota Racing Development) Sport, and TRD Off-Road. Similar are the trims offered in the 2020 Tacoma. Customers also have an option to upgrade from the standard 2.7L Motor to a more powerful 3.5L V6 that generates more power and torque.

When it comes to options many models offer features that are available on higher trims. Most of the Tacoma Limited's features are available on TRD models, many TRD features can be had on the SR5 and many SR5 features are optional on the SR. The Tacoma TRD comes with the 3.5L Engine as standard that delivers 278HP and 265lb-ft of torque as compared to the 2.7L motor that belts out 159HP and 180lbs-ft of Torque.

We Recommend :

We would highly recommend the TRD Sport trim as it comes with a powerful 3.5L motor as standard and a host of Comfort Creatures that will keep you entertained during your journeys. Optioning it with six-speed manual transmission is advised as the automatic unit feels clumsy and sluggish.

2018 Toyota Tacoma Engine and Performance

6.1/10

2018 Toyota Tacoma offers two engine choices to the buyer. The SR and SR5 models come with a 2.7 Liter Inline-4 engine. There is an option to upgrade to a V6 engine, which is highly recommended as the 159hp generating 4-cylinder engine feels too weak and inferior for a vehicle this size.

2018 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab has 3.5L V6 engine

Toyota didn't do much with Tacoma's engines for 2018. The transmissions, however, saw some changes. The 5-speed manual transmission which was available for inline 4 engines is discontinued. The six-speed automatic transmission is standard on all trims. But for the old school guys who still prefer a manual gearbox, the TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road get a 6-speed manual as an option.

Although an inline-4 engine is available in other competitors' base models as well, Tacoma's engine is relatively weaker. Even Tacoma's V-6 engine fails to provide as much power as that of Chevrolet Colorado or GMC Canyon, both of which can generate 308 hp. The Honda Ridgeline also produces 2 horses more than the Toyota Tacoma.

How quick is the 0-60 mph acceleration of the 2018 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab?

The Toyota Tacoma Access Cab does post decent 0-60 times from standstill. It takes 7.7-seconds to reach the 60 mph mark. It does not do wonders in quarter-mile acceleration as well by clocking 16-sec.

2018 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab accelerate in 7.7 sec

The Chevy Colorado is the best when it comes to 0-60 MPH runs, taking 6.1-seconds, which is 1.6-seconds quicker than the Tacoma.

It's no surprise that the least power-generating engine would also be on the shallow end of the boost pool. The Tacoma is no exception. While other competitors compete on a millisecond scale, Tacoma takes well over a second to reach the 60 mph mark.

How is the Braking performance of the 2018 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab?

The Tacoma has a decent set of Brakes that allows it to come down to a halt from 60mph pretty easily. From the perspective of the Driver, however, the brake pedal feels a bit touchy and the byte from the brakes may be a bit ambivalent for most people.

The Low Weight of the Tacoma adds to its braking effectiveness. Still, the bigger brakes of the Chevy Colorado helps it stop in the least distance when compared with the competition. The Honda Ridgeline has bigger brakes compared to the Tacoma, yet takes more distance to come to a standstill.

How is the ride and handling of the 2018 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab?

It's pretty harsh to expect the Handling of a Car from a pickup truck. But with the increasing standards of ride quality and comfort, people often tend to higher their expectations. The Tacoma has been built to perform on harsh and tough terrains and hence, the handling feels in the same way. In terms of Pick Up truck standards, the Tacoma offers a pretty decent experience overall.

At slower speeds, the steering feels a little sloppy but firms up once you hit higher speeds. The 2018 Toyota Tacoma has made substantial progress in the brakes department as the new 2018 Toyota Tacoma's brakes modulate easily. Once you go off-road, the Tacoma easily tackles slow technical sections, sometimes even without the aid of driver assistance tools like crawl control or the locking gear differential

What is the Towing Capacity of the 2018 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab?

The Tacoma offers a Towing capacity of 6800lbs which is very much comparable to the segment. The V6 motor effortlessly tows up Loads without the engine failing strained at any time be it at Motorways or in cities.

Not only does the Tacoma post good Towing capacity, but it also has the best towing capacity in this comparison which is followed by the powerful GMC. The margin isn't much but still, people looking for stats will favor the Tacoma.

2018 Toyota Tacoma Fuel Economy

6.1/10

Surprisingly, the Tacoma's 278 hp V6 delivers similar mileage as the 156 hp inline-four. The standard engine of the Tacoma returns 20 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on highways, and 21 mpg combined. Those figures are lower by one mpg with a 4-wheel-drive (4WD). The 2.7L Motor of Toyota is one of the most frugal motors in the segment. It delivers more power than some of its competitors but without compromising on the mileage front as well.

A few competitors who perform better than the Tacoma include Honda Ridgeline, which gives 19 mpg and 26 MPG in city and highways respectively. Ridgeline is also the only truck that has a standard V6 across all trims. The Chevy Colorado does not perform well on its V6 engine, but its base four-cylinder engine puts up 20 mpg city and 26 MPG highway.

2018 Toyota Tacoma Interior

6.1/10

Toyota did not feel like fiddling with the interiors of the Tacoma and has carried forward with a design, similar to what was seen in the 2017 model. As is the case with the interiors of the 2020 Tacoma. There have been some subtle changes done in the Interior Features though. There is a convenient cell phone spot that can be upgraded to act as a wireless charging pad. A sliding sun visor, an optional driver information center with a digital speedometer, and a sunglass compartment have been added to the overall features list.

2018 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab front seats

The fixed-style front seats of the 2018 Toyota Tacoma are only good for short to medium-height drivers. But the taller drivers would constantly brush the headliner. But what the seats lack in customizability, they make up in shape and feel.

Most trims offer adjustable lumbar support. Avoid inviting more than two adults to sit in the rear seats, because the legroom, just like the telescopic travel, meets the minimum requirements in the Access Cab. One Unique feature in the Tacoma has to be the GoPro mount on the windshield that allows GoPro Cameras to be mounted on them and capture your off-road endeavors. The Top trims get premium features like heated leather seats, a powered moonroof, wireless charging, a premium audio system from JBL (which we highly recommend), and a passive entry with a push-button start. Some of the other interior features include:

  • Analog instrumentation with speedometer
  • 4.2-in. color Multi-Information Display (MID)
  • Fabric-trimmed seats
  • 4-way adjustable driver's seat with lumbar support
  • 4-way adjustable front passenger seat
  • Urethane tilt/telescopic steering wheel with audio controls
  • Remote keyless entry system with lock, unlock, and panic functions
  • Manual day/night rearview mirror (4-cyl. only)

How intuitive is the Infotainment System in the 2018 Toyota Tacoma?

The Tacoma still plays home to its previous year's system, which means newer necessities like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have not yet made their way in. Tacoma has only one USB port and a 12-volt outlet in the cabin, where other competitors offer at least two.

2018 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab infotainment screen

Along with that, it has some standard features like Bluetooth connectivity and voice control. Some other standard and optional infotainment related features include:

  • AUX Input
  • Bluetooth Audio
  • Bluetooth Phone
  • Navigation (Optional)
  • Real-Time Traffic (Optional)
  • Real-Time Weather (Optional)
  • USB ports
  • Voice Command

How much Cargo Space and Payload Capacity is available with the 2018 Toyota Tacoma?

Cargo storage is the make or break point for any pickup and the Tacoma takes this seriously. With two cargo-box lengths and two cab styles, buyers have the option of building their Tacoma to tailor to their needs. If you flip up the rear seats, there are many open and covered compartments to store stuff that would otherwise want hidden. The seatbacks can be pulled down to get a completely flat load floor.

2018 Toyota Tacoma Exterior

6.1/10

The Tacoma was first introduced to the US market in 1995, that's 22 years ago. It is, therefore, no surprise that Tacoma's looks are sturdy and remind the viewer of the classic truck style. Despite minor changes here and there, Tacoma has mostly kept its old school look. The front of the Tacoma looks burly and capable.

2018 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab

Its square design is neatly complemented by a hexagonal grille. Tacoma also has narrow headlights and puffed-out fenders, which give it a meaner look.

There are minor upgrades to the 2018 Toyota Tacoma's appearance, which differ in different trims. The SR and SR5 grille is slightly remodeled. The TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road get a darker mesh, to further add to its bold and mean front fascia. Even the base trim is packed with some interesting features, such as a sliding rear window, a composite bed liner, and projector beam headlights, which add to a clearer view during the night. Some of the exterior features include:

  • Damped tailgate
  • 120V AC power outlet
  • LED box lighting
  • Adjustable tie-down cleats
  • A fully integrated bed liner.

2018 Toyota Tacoma Safety

8.0/10

The Tacoma has been given a couple of Important Safety features as part of the 2018 Model year. The new Toyota Tacoma Access Cab gets decent scores in crash tests conducted by the NHTSA and IIHS. Similar to the Safety ratings of the 2020 Tacoma. The most important feature is the addition of the Toyota Safety Sense package as standard on all the Trims. Other features include

  • Advanced Airbag System with dual-stage supplemental front airbags with seat belt and occupant-classification sensors
  • Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Traction Control System
  • Active Brake Limited Slip (ABLS)
  • 3-point ALR/ELR passenger seat belt (ELR for the driver)
  • Front-seat Active Head Restraints
  • Front seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters
  • LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children)
  • Zone Body construction with front and rear crumple zones
  • Hood buckling creases and energy-absorbing steering column
  • Pipe-style steel side-door guard beams
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

2018 Toyota Tacoma Competition

8.4/10

Toyota Tacoma vs Honda Ridgeline

The Toyota Tacoma outshines Honda's Ridgeline in a variety of Areas be it in overall performance or efficiency. The Tacoma also offers superb durability and with the added safety features, the Tacoma does have an edge over the Honda.

Honda Ridgeline

We do however miss the addition of some Modern Features like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay which are offered by Ridgeline.

Toyota Tacoma vs GMC Canyon

The GMC Canyon is the General Motor twin of the Chevy Colorado and is almost identical to it. The GMC offers class-leading Performance and better Towing and Payload Capacity than the Toyota. The Toyota however offers rugged Durability and a better resale value.

GMC Canyon

We do feel that 10 years down the line, the Toyota will be the Truck that will have most of its parts in place, unlike the GMC which has a less durable feel to it.

Tacoma Vs Chevrolet Colorado

The Chevrolet Colorado's cabin feels more impressive than Tacoma's old school one. In terms of performance, Colorado maintains its lead. Apart from the base 200hp and the 305 hp V6, there is also a turbo diesel engine that expands the towing capacity to 7,700 pounds.

Chevrolet Colorado

Something that Tacoma cannot match. Not to mention the fact that the Chevrolet Colorado is cheaper than the Tacoma.

2018 Toyota Tacoma Final Verdict

8.0/10

The 2018 Tacoma offers great off-road capability, towing capacity, and utility you expect from a midsize truck. There are deals for used Tacomas across the states which make them irresistible. Tacoma feels at home when you take it off the road. The Tacoma's reliable V6 engine and off-roading capabilities and reliability are paralleled by a few making it one of the best deals.

Livable yet beast of a machine.

Pros - Large cabin, handy backup cam, excellent forward visibility

Cons - Off-raodbility, infinite customization options, powerful engine

Go anywhere machine. Literally my go anywhere beast! In the snow, the mountain you name it. I have mine specced in AWD and is prepped with the Fox lift kit to take it up a notch. Perfect foe every kinda job! A nice and comfy cabin to top it all off. James did a great job, very helpful. Paper work did take a bit of time to get done but the rest of the prcess went troble free.

Love my Tacoma!

Pros - It drives very smoothly even though it’s a truck.

Cons - I have no complaints.

Surpassed expectations It has been 2 years since I bought it and have logged almost 3,400 miles. I live in Texas and the V6 is more than adequate for my daily needs. The roads are flat here so there is no need for a bigger engine or more power. The gas mileage is also a big positive of Tacoma over its competition. The interior is and was very important to me. I have a backache and the ride quality/comfort was of utmost importance to me and Tacoma has faired far better than I expected it to be. In the past 2 years, I have not faced any pain or ache. I am 5'9" and have no problem getting in and out of the vehicle. Plus, I have about 3 inches of room available when I sit in and if you recline the seat you can get more if you are taller. And if you are looking for more space then I suggest you look for a full-size truck. First Team Toyota is a good dealership. The salesperson was very nice and was helpful, answered all my questions. The finance department, on the other hand, was not the best, to say the least. They tried to trick me with some made-up charges.

Tacoma is the real deal

Pros - Rugged and practical interior, love the exterior design, nicely painted wheel, comfortable and spacious

Cons - Nothing

The real deal Tacoma in my experience is an anomaly in the truck market. It is surprisingly good when it comes to driving. Handles like a charm which is unheard of in a truck. The ride quality is good too. All in all, it is a truck which breaks all the norm when it comes to truck driving experience!! And the cabin is spacious enough to take a nap in case I ever wanted to. Just the buying experience? It was not bad at all but the overall dealership experience deteriorated with each visit.
