Receiving the TRD Pro treatment for 2020, the Toyota Sequoia has got a revamp for this year. The 2020 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro will be joining Toyota’s off-road lineup alongside the 4Runner, Tacoma, and the Tundra. Toyota has been using the TRD Pro magic on most of its SUVs and Trucks for a long time now. The ‘TRD Pro’ suffix added to big cars seems to make them beefier and performance-oriented these days.

Receiving the TRD Pro treatment for 2020, the Toyota Sequoia has got a revamp for this year. Toyota has been using the TRD Pro magic on most of its SUVs and Trucks for a long time now. The ‘TRD Pro’ suffix added to big cars seems to make them beefier and performance-oriented these days.

For 2020, the Sequoia is offered in five trim levels- SR5, TRD Sport, Limited, Platinum, and TRD Pro. The SUV is not the best one in the market but has proven itself as a good eight-seater passenger hauler. With the new Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro, the brand has tried to reclaim its position in the SUV segment.

2020 Toyota Sequoia TRD SUV Features

5.0/10

Priced at $64,030, the Sequoia TRD Pro comes equipped with some major upgrades over the regular model such as upgraded Fox shocks, skid plates, and cool blacked-out emblems. Additionally, there's significant ground clearance, and this true body-on-frame truck platform helps this trim to get over some rough terrain.

We Recommend

Since this is the sole trim in the Toyota Sequoia lineup, we would recommend the TRD Pro for buyers looking for an ultimate off-road package in a beefy three-row SUV.

2020 Toyota Sequoia TRD SUV Engine and Performance

5.0/10

For this year, the 5.7-liter V-8 engine and six-speed automatic transmission remain the same for the TRD Pro, but an optional cat-back exhaust with a more distinctive sound is available. The engine churns out 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque.

2020 Toyota Sequoia TRD has 5.7L V8 powertrain Engine

All-wheel drive is available as standard and also there is a Torsen limited-slip center differential and a two-speed transfer case, similar to the standard Sequoia with its optional all-wheel-drive system.

The Toyota Sequoia produces a similar amount of horsepower as the rivals but the six-speed transmission feels smooth but it hardly helps the Sequoia in improving the fuel efficiency, especially when compared to 10-speed units found in Chevrolet Tahoe or the Ford Expedition.

How fast is the Sequoia TRD Pro?

This big SUV is capable of taking you from 0 to 60 in just 7.1 seconds which is pretty decent for its size. The Toyota Sequoia engine can never feel strained when passing slower traffic.

The tough powertrain is useful in rough tarmac and provides enough torque to climb steep hills.

The Toyota Sequoia runs neck to neck with the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition in 0 to 60 runs while Discovery stands at last because of the lower displacement.

How does it drive when it comes to handling?

There's no getting around the fact that the Toyota Sequoia is a big, lumbering body-on-frame SUV. It has more body roll than competitors, and the steering is vague and floaty. Rather than try to fix those issues, though, the new 2020 TRD Pro package makes the most of them.

2020 Toyota Sequoia TRD 3 Quarter View

The star of the 2020 Sequoia TRD Pro is its Fox shock absorbers and new springs. They noticeably improve the ride quality and shine in off-road conditions. The Sequoia is not a natural athlete in the dirt — its size and blind spots prohibit drivers from getting too ambitious. But the new suspension bits smooth out ruts and rocks, allowing the SUV to power over steep angles. The 5.7-liter V8 engine offers considerable power, and the six-speed automatic transmission is smooth, though you pay for it in fuel economy (14 mpg for 4WD models).

How do the brakes function on the TRD Pro?

The Brake pedal feels in the Sequoia is soft and easy to modulate around the city. Sequoia’s advanced Automatic Limited-Slip Differential uses the brakes to help reduce wheel spin and enhance traction performance on unpredictable road surfaces like sand or mud.

2020 Toyota Sequoia Brake Rotor

The steering moves from side to side in an emergency braking situation. The average stopping distance is also good for this segment.

How much does the Sequoia TRD Pro tow?

As far as the towing capacity is concerned, the Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro is capable of towing up to 7,100 pounds. Also, you can opt for an optional harmonious exhaust to add more character to the car. Trailer-Sway Control (TSC) is designed to apply brake pressure at individual wheels and manage engine torque to help the driver maintain control of the trailer.

2020 Toyota Sequoia TRD SUV Fuel Economy

2.0/10

The Toyota Sequoia can burn a hole in your pocket with monthly fuel bills as it is least efficient among rivals. With the fuel economy figures of 13 mpg city and 17 mpg on the highway, don’t expect a greener environment. Most of the rivals are way more fuel-efficient than the Sequoia.

You'll save more than $400 per year on gas driving the Tahoe compared to the Sequoia. With 2WD, the Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Tahoe returns 20 and 19 mpg combined which is better than the Sequoia.

The Sequoia TRD Pro is offered in a seven-passenger seating style, accompanied by middle-row captain's chairs and a third-row bench. The headrests and floor mats have been embroidered with TRD Pro logos with red contrast stitching. The standard equipment includes keyless entry with push-button start, a sunroof, tri-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, and a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support— this is new for Toyota's entire truck lineup, also found in models like 2020 4Runner, Tacoma, and Tundra models.

2020 Toyota Sequoia TRD SUV Exterior

3.0/10

The TRD Pro treated Sequoia resembles close to the full-size pickup trucks, also because of its pickup truck inspired chassis. The exterior loss some point on the chrome work. On the front fascia, you get LED on headlamps and fog lamps. Overall, the Sequoia TRD Pro looks very intimidating. The aluminum running boards and a roof rack gives its a complete off-road look.

2020 Toyota Sequoia TRD SUV

The profile has been kept simple and it looks like the design is basic. The fenders offer TRD Pro badges while the B-pillars and the base of the wing mirrors have been blacked out. The SUV stands on large 18-inch BBS black-painted wheels, and it looks smoky hot with white body paint. The Sequoia TRD Pro is available in four shades -

  • Super White
  • Midnight Black Metallic
  • Magnetic Grey Metallic

2020 Toyota Sequoia TRD SUV Competition

7.0/10

Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro VS Ford Expedition FX4

The Ford Expedition is a very humble and quiet SUV when compared to the Toyota Sequoia. Ford offers all-suite of safety features just like Toyota Safety Sense system available with the Sequoia SUV. Both the vehicles offer ample space in terms of interior space, but Ford turns out to be more drive friendly with better interior amenities. It also performs well in the fuel economy part.

2020 Ford Expedition SUV

Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro VS Chevrolet Tahoe

Chevy Tahoe is known for its robust performance and towing capacity. Tahoe also holds high floor for cargo and its handling is not that good in tight spaces.

2020 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV

2020 Toyota Sequoia TRD SUV Final Verdict

The 2020 Sequoia TRD Pro is capable of off-roading in most of the road situations. Some may see it as a perfect three-row SUV while others would focus only on its aggressive attributes like roof rack, 18-inch aluminum wheels, and rigid LED foglights. The TRD Pro is also available in Army Green color, and believe me, it is a complete head-turner, and looks tougher when covered with mud.
