2020 Toyota Sequoia Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Saurav Kumar's image

Saurav Kumar Editor Updated on: November 26, 2019

The Toyota Sequoia has been working around in the SUV market without any fresh changes or new addition. Notedly, it can still be seen wearing the Tundra-based body-on-frame design and extracting power from the same 5.7-liter V8, paired with the same six-speed automatic transmission.

Now as the Sequoia enters into the coming year, the addition of brand new 7-inch touchscreen with smartphone compatibility is bliss. Some of the optional safety features like Safety Sense-P system are now standard on all Sequoias, offering adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation and lane departure warning. Also, the Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard.

In order to give Toyota Sequoia a tough attire, the Japanese carmaker has come up with an exclusive TRD Pro trim that boosts its off-road presence. The TRD Pro seems to be roaring on all kinds of terrains with upgraded Fox shocks, skid plates, and cool blacked-out emblems. Additionally, there's good ground clearance, and this true body-on-frame platform makes it a tough competition.

We Recommend

If you plan on doing some serious off-roading in your three-row family hauler, check out the Sequoia TRD Sport or TRD Pro models. But for everyone else, we'd recommend the base SR5 Sequoia with the optional Premium package. You get all the Sequoia's standard equipment such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning, as well as the optional stuff such as heated front seats and integrated navigation.

2020 Toyota Sequoia Engine

The Sequoia is available only with a 381-hp 5.7-liter V-8 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or four-wheel drive. Although the Sequoia is built upon a pickup-truck chassis, it still features a rear suspension with a modern design. While it adequately isolated us from the extreme bumps, too many shakes and noise entered the cabin when driven on uneven terrain.

The Toyota Sequoia produces a similar amount of horsepower as some of its prominent rivals but the six-speed transmission feels smooth but it hardly helps the Sequoia in improving the fuel efficiency, especially when compared to 10-speed transmission units found in Chevrolet Tahoe or the Ford Expedition.

How fast is it comparatively?

This SUV can take you from 0 to 60 in just 7.1 seconds which is pretty good, taking the size into consideration. The engine of the Toyota Sequoia can never feel tired when passing slower traffic. The huge powertrain is useful in rough terrain and provides enough torque to climb steep hills.

The Toyota Sequoia runs neck to neck with the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition in 0 to 60 runs while Discovery stands at last because of the lower displacement.

What about the driving dynamics?

The steering is light and feels less connected to the main shaft at times. Although the handling is precise with heavy feel at lower speeds. The suspension upgrade allows the SUV to absorb smaller bumps quite well. On a different note, the TRD models have firmer support.

What about the Braking performance of 2020 Toyota Sequoia?

The Sequoia's brake pedal is easy to modulate after initial inputs. The TRD Pro model is a good off-road trim as it offers a lifted suspension, beefy shock absorbers, and exclusive wheels with meatier tires.

The Toyota Sequoia has the worst braking distance because of its higher curb weight and stops at longish 130 feet’s.

How much does the Toyota Sequoia tow?

The wonderful V8 is rated to tow up to 7,400 pounds which is less than most of the rivals. It is well suited for small trailers and boats. Trailer-Sway Control (TSC) is designed in such a way that the brake pedals feel light and execute optimum pressure on individual wheels, also maintaining the trailer control.

2020 Toyota Sequoia Fuel Economy

The Sequoia hold a great love for gasoline, that is. While many of its full-size friends also have a needed thirst for fossil fuels, the Toyota offers worst EPA estimates and real-world fuel economy in the industry. The Sequoia returns 17 mpg on highway fuel-economy and 13 mpg in the city.

2020 Toyota Sequoia Interior

7.4/10

The cheap-looking plastics and shabby controls still continue to get into the Sequoia's cabin. The bigger-is-better knobs and conspicuous buttons are undeniably functional, though. Still, it has some of the modern facilities mission comparatively. People looking for a durable interior will love how the carmaker has added options to the Sequoia. Moreover, there’s something to cheer about, the plentiful passenger space with comfy legroom in all three rows.

Does it come loaded with Tech on the inside?

2020 Toyota Sequoia SUV infotainment screen

The 2020 Sequoia lineup comes installed with the 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Toyota finally introduces Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability to the table after a long time. This is meant to be a much-awaited update in order to keep itself in-line with the competition and make both smartphone-friendly features standard. The Sequoia also offers Wi-Fi hotspot, which works with an initial trial based subscription. A rear-seat entertainment system gets an upgraded JBL audio system.

What about utility?

The Sequoia held a healthy amount of carry-on luggage behind the third row and with rear seats stowed. This is noteworthy because the Toyota doesn't have an extended version for increased cargo capacity as some rivals such as the GMC Yukon XL and the Ford Expedition Max. It also has enough interior cubby storage to moonlight as a mobile yard sale.

2020 Toyota Sequoia Exterior

The Toyota Sequoia hasn’t been updated in recent years. The grille has been slightly reshaped in the year 2018 and it features different inserts depending on trim level. Based on the Tundra, the Sequoia has the largest dimensions and outdoes the $85,000 Landcruiser in terms of size. The short front and rear overhangs allow you to climb steep angles with ease and long wheelbase accounts for a spacious interior.

2020 Toyota Sequoia Competition

Toyota Sequoia vs. Ford Expedition

2020 Ford Expedition

The Ford Expedition comes with a full suite of safety features just like Toyota Sequoia’s Safety Sense system. In terms of cabin space, both the vehicles are well provided, but ford is a bit more sporty and performer when it comes to daily activities, also wearing modern interior. It also excels in the fuel economy part and the Sequoia is disappointing.

Toyota Sequoia vs. Chevrolet Tahoe

2020 Chevrolet Tahoe

Similar to the Sequoia, the Chevy Tahoe also adapts a body-on-frame design layout that offers better towing capacity and cargo area. The Tahoe lacks the simple maneuver in tight spaces, unlike the Toyota Sequoia.

2020 Toyota Sequoia Final Verdict

Despite bringing in the latest additions, the Toyota Sequoia is unable to please its long term fans. Competitors like Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition have been redesigned in order to provide better compatibility for buyer demands. Shoppers who are looking for a full-size three-row SUV with sufficient updates must try out the all-new Sequoia.
