Which trim should you opt for?

The TRD Off-Road is a well-packed one-off trim that packs a whole of off-road punch and has equal muscle to back it up. The array of off-road assists helps you tread any terrain with ease making it a one-off in this segment. For $35,180, it is a steal!

2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD SUV Engine and Performance

5.0/10

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road comes equipped with a 2.5L inline-four engine which pumps out a healthy 203 horses and 184-pound feet of torque which is transmitted to all wheels via an 8-Speed Automatic transmission. The All-Wheel-Drive setup is an advanced system that dynamically transfers power to all four wheels only when needed. It cuts off the power to the rear wheels to save fuel.

This is the main reason for RAV4’s impressive fuel economy. The transmission does an impressive job of jolting down the power in a linear and eager manner. The upshifts are very abrupt but in a good way and you won’t feel the pressure when overtaking. It includes five multi-terrain driving modes namely- Mud, Sand, Rock, Dirt, and Snow which gives you much more flexibility to tackle the terrains.

Chevy Equinox has the most powerful engine of the lot with an excess of 250 horses and 260 pound-feet of torque. Then comes the RAV4 followed by Tiguan and Tucson which have similar power outputs. Volkswagen Tiguan surpasses the rest in terms of torque due to the lighter crankshaft.

How quick is the RAV4 TRD in the 0-60 run?

The precise and short ratioed 8-Speed Automatic transmission helps the RAV4 sprint from 0-60 in under 8 seconds. This is impressive for a car with a naturally aspirated engine. The gears are eager to upshift which helps reduce a lot of shifting time, unlike its competition. The lighter 18-inch alloy wheels are also instrumental in the quick acceleration.

2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Accelerate  0-60 MPH in 7.8 sec

The electronic on-demand all-wheel-drive system helps in squeezing off a few seconds on the roads and also maneuver those challenging terrains as well. Dynamic Torque vectoring helps you take corners with more confidence and is a boon for off-roading as well.

Chevy takes advantage of the added power which helps it sprint from 0-60 in under 7 seconds. The quarter-mile also comes up a whole second faster than the Toyota. Volkswagen Tiguan and Hyundai Tucson share similar sprint timing.

How better does the 2020 RAV4 TRD handle?

Toyota has put in a lot of effort to provide the best in RAV4 in terms of ride and handling. Toyota’s New Global Architecture(TNGA) platform is constructed to provide you with the best possible dual-purpose experience. The added ground clearance helps you tackle any given terrain with ease and the longer, wider stance makes handling much more responsive. The lower center of gravity helps minimize body roll, thus providing a befitting driving experience for on-roads as well.

2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Front View

A few notable additions make the TRD stand out from the rest of the crowd. It adds an array of off-road centric hardware changes like twin-shock absorbers to take more beating and lighter, and stronger alloys wheels which are wrapped with Falken Wildpeak trail tires which are dual-purpose and added grip.

The steering is precise but lacks feel and you would end up misjudging the input required due to the uncertain character. But overall, it treats you with one of the best driving cars in its class. The three driving modes give you three varying driving characters to explore.

How linear is the 60-0 braking?

Braking on the Toyota RAV4 is commendable as it provides enough bite on all four wheels to stop the car from 60-0 in 131 feet. This is not class-leading but the linear application makes it confidence-inspiring.

2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD Front Brake is 12.0-inch and Rear Brake 11.1-inch.

Various active and passive safety and driving assistance features use the brakes like Hill Start Assist and Downhill Assist Control. Brakes play an integral part in these features that help in providing you with a tension-free driving experience.

As per the data, Tiguan has the largest brakes of the lot and this is to help manage the added curb weight it has. It is the heaviest of the lot and more weight means more stopping power. Hyundai and Toyota share similar dimensions.

2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD SUV Fuel Economy

5.0/10

The 2020 RAV4 provides us with an impressive fuel economy of a combined 30 MPG. The clever technique of disengaging the rear axle when not needed and only powering the front wheels. As there are two less wheels to power, it saves on fuel.

The fuel tank capacity is on the lesser side as there are many other cars in this segment that provides with a larger fuel tank. So, The RAV4 is also perfect for a weekend mountain getaway and can even take on the hills with enough luggage for the whole family.

Even the off-road-focused RAV4 impresses us with its pack leading fuel efficiency. It is way ahead of the others with the closest competitor being the Chevy Equinox with a combined MPG of 24.

2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD SUV Interior

6.0/10

Seating is nominal in the RAV4, with five occupants being comfortably seated in it. Both the rows are laden with cloth and unfortunately, there is no leather upholstery option. There is ample space in both the rows but due to the awkward seat height and acute backrest, you are seated upright, which isn’t the most comfortable position.

2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD SUV Dashboard

A few TRD specific treatments are also given to the interior with perforated and heated front seats getting red stitching all through the cabin. It gets all-weather floor mats with the TRD logo on it. The front headrests have the TR logo to remind of the special Toyota you are in.

But due to the low roofline, occupants over 5’11” would scrub their heads. It get optional heated and cooled seats to keep you comfortable. Dual-Zone Automatic Climate control with rear vents help keep the occupants comfortable. The power-operated moonroof helps you stargaze on the mountain top.

Seating is not the RAV4’s strong point as the front seats are low on space as compared to its rivals. Hyundai Tucson has the most spacious cabin but is not optimally laid out. That position goes to the Equinox which takes full advantage of the extra cabin space and gives you a more comfortable cabin.

What are the various infotainment features on offer?

Toyota has worked on the downside which held back it’s line-up. The infotainment system which was provided with the earlier year models were lackluster and didn’t even have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay as standard. It now includes a 4G LTE mobile hotspot along with the earlier absent features.

2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD SUV 8-inch touchscreen infotainment Screen

The TRD Off-Road trim gets a JBL audio system with 11-speakers which includes subwoofers and amplifiers. It also includes connected services which can help you in times of emergency.

Infotainment Features.

  • 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • JBL Audio System with 11 speakers
  • Subwoofers and Amplifiers included
  • Dynamic navigation with 3 Years subscription
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • SiriusXM and Alexa support
  • Five USB ports(1-music,4-charging)

How much cargo can the RAV4 Off-Road take in?

Toyota with its tall body structure and increased ground clearance provides for the best in class cargo capacity. The ground clearance allows for a deeper floor which helps house more volume. A cargo net is also available. There are hooks and partitions to store smaller objects and a cargo net can also be opted.

2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD SUV has 37.7 cu-ft Cargo Volume

Folding the split rear seats will open up a whole lot of extra space for more than your weekend escapes. The TRD treatment continuos in the cargo space as well with TRD logos on the all-weather red mats.

Toyota has managed to bring a BIG SUV feel to the RAV4 in a rather smaller footprint. We can see design cues being taken from the Tacoma and 4Runner. As all of these are members of the Toyota family, the resemblance is likely. The roof is rather low for a car pitched in as an SUV and is rather odd for a car of such a stance.

2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD SUV 3rd Quarter View

The RAV4 gets TRD treatment with a dechromed grille and dark front and rear bumper accents. The dual-tone treatment gives it a distinctive look and adds to its character. The roof rails are a bit higher and also gets optional cross rails. The unique 18-inch matte black alloy wheels give the car a whole different look.

2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD SUV Competition

Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road vs Chevrolet Equinox

Chevy Equinox is much more powerful when compared to the RAV4. It has an impressive suspension as well which can take in imperfections on the road. But the cargo capacity suffers and interior quality is not at par with the Toyota. And the main letdown is the off-roading capability which is nowhere near the RAV4. In all aspects, the RAV4 provides a much better package.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox

Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road vs Volkswagen Tiguan

Volkswagen gave their best shot with the Tiguan but it still wasn’t enough to topple Toyota. It sure provides a good pack of features and a comfortable cabin. But loses out on sub-par performance and crappy driving dynamics. The RAV4 takes the cup here.

2020 Volkswagen Tiguan

Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road vs Hyundai Tucson

Tucson is our only competitor which actually stands up to the competition. It fairs neck to neck with the RAV4 in terms of features and comfort. But Toyota takes the edge by incorporating exceptional off-roading abilities to the RAV4. A feat that no other manufacturer has achieved yet. We will chose the RAV4 over Tucson for the reliable diversity it provides.

2020 Hyundai Tucson

2020 Toyota RAV4 TRD SUV Final Verdict

6.5/10

Toyota has taken an already competent SUV from its lineup and made it even better. The TRD Off-Road incorporates an array of mechanical tweaks to make the SUV stroll deeper into the unknown. Toyota has done an impressive job of building an SUV that has a balanced character, both on and off roads. The impressive combinations make it one of a kind in its class.

"TRD Offroad of Rav4"

Throttle response in rav4 trd is good but could have been better given the offroading tag. Toyota should have had a bigger engine option in trd at least. Other than the power, everything is in place starting from handling to drive quality. Ground clearance also is sufficient to tread almost anywhere.
