2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime SUV Buying Advice

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime comes in two trims, the SE and the XSE. Both share the same engine configuration and the drivetrain as well. The better choice, however, would be the XSE, which at $3000 more gives you a whole lot of features, upscale interiors, optimized exteriors, and added creature comfort as well.

The RAV4 Prime is also smooth and easy to drive under typical commuting conditions. - Edmunds

The 2.5L Naturally Aspirated Inline-4 motor of the 2021 RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid cranks out a sweet 302 HP combined with the 2 electric motors. All that power is channeled to all the wheels of this compact SUV as standard. The engine comes mated with the super-smooth 8-speed automatic transmission. It takes the experience up a notch and gives a very spontaneous feel to the person behind the wheel.

The feedback from the engine feels powerful, and the outstanding weight balance with the additional load of the battery gives you a very stable ride. Despite being a compact SUV that weighs up to 4300 lbs, the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime is unbelievable fast. It is able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds.

The braking is as good as the acceleration in this car, if not better. The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime has premium 12-inch brake rotors which bring this car to a halt in an instant. However, the heavyweight chassis and the wide and muscular design are kind of a hurdle to the agility of the car, making swift maneuvers seem a bit daunting.

Being a hybrid doesn’t just add to the performance, but increases fuel efficiency as well. The notion of hybrid cars being better than gasoline ones is based on more efficiency and a smaller carbon footprint. Speaking of numbers, the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime puts out a massive 94 MPGe combined. The mpg figures for city and highway settings are 40 MPG and 36 MPG respectively.

Also, once powered up, the Prime PHEV makes up for 42 miles of all-electric driving. The heavyweight does affect the mileage, but it is too insignificant to make the massive 94 MPGe (combined) look small. Despite having massive power and tremendous agility, the car has aced the fuel economy criterion as well. Only the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid with 90 MPGe combined can match up to it.

2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime SUV Interior

8.2/10

"Most surfaces are soft to touch, and the optional synthetic leather upholstery earns praises for its soft and supple feel." - Cars.USNews.Com

The interiors of the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime have been given quite a revamp as compared to the gas-only RAV4. The upscale interior with leather upholstery looks aesthetic to the eye and modern at the same time. The dashboard and the center console have been tweaked to look more ergonomic and sleek. The seating has been kept the same, but they get a leather finish as a standard, and the heated seats are available in the XSE trim. The overall design is aesthetic and the aluminum accents add to the class.

However the hard plastics can be abundantly found, the quality of the material used is really sturdy and does not feel hollow to touch. The car seats 5 passengers comfortably and leaves them ample room to move. The added creature comforts uplift the experience and make the ride even more enjoyable. Climate control is automatic and does a fine job of cooling this big SUV. The temperature, however, can be manually controlled from the instrument panel on the dashboard. The overall design is ergonomic and keeps the driver’s attention focused on the road even while using the driver-assist features.

Every important control is kept in close proximity to the driver for easy access. The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime is really spacious and at par with the competition. However, the Ford Escape adds a few inches more to both its rows than the Toyota. In terms of practicality, the cargo capacity of 33.5 cubic feet is also commendable. Compared to the competition, the trunk volume is the largest and the interior storage spaces available are ample. The infotainment system in the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime revolves around an 8-inch touch screen display in the SE trim and a 9-inch touchscreen display in the XSE trim.

Both of which are quite responsive and useful. This compact SUV comes with the smart device integration of Android Auto and apple car play. The sound system is a JBL setup for immersive sound quality. The music feels loud enough for the big and spacious cabin. The digital driver’s display monitors and alerts about the oil levels, mileage and also acts as a digital speedometer. The infotainment is upscale and feels premium. Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are as follows:

  • 8 or 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Toyota Dynamic Navigation
  • Amazon Alexa, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay integration
  • JBL audio system
  • Wireless smartphone charging
  • SiriusXM and Bluetooth
  • 5-USB ports including charging ports

"The current RAV4 is quite attractive given the model's history. Its blocky, chunky exterior design gives of a baby 4Runner vibe." - TheCarConnection.Com

The already beautiful RAV4 receives a few touches to improve its aerodynamics and aesthetics in its Prime plug-in hybrid avatar. The front fascia has been made edgier for better performance and the muscular body lines sure look great. The front grille is made gloss black, which looks great too.

The body lines on the side are sturdy and blend right in above the rear bumper. The rear end is also a delight. With a wide trunk opening, the car can fit in larger luggage and also looks bold, and has a solid road presence. The overall aesthetics of the car look sporty and aggressive. This compact SUV is definitely one of the best-looking SUVs in the segment.

2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime vs 2021 Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid

The Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid comes closest to beating the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime, but the overwhelming performance and fuel economy are just ten steps ahead in the Toyota. The Ford Escape PHEV is, however, a great SUV but the Toyota remains unbeatable in this category.

The zippy RAV4

Pros - Zippy acceleraion. Feature packed. Great styling.

Cons - Bland handling. Limited range on electric mode. 6.6 kW charger not standard.

With the tax-credit benefit, it was absolutely a no-brainer to go for the top spec RAV4 Hybrid. The AWD motors and engine provide a strong acceleration. This makes getting off traffic loghts so much fun! Its packed with a long list of features. I do like the huge 9" infotainment system, the heads-up display. It has ample of cuppy storage and USB/power outlets. The red-accented interior with contrast stitching and silver handles give the cabin a upmarket feel. The seats are quite spacious and comfortable. With the two-tone paint and chrome-accented exterior, the car does look premium. I really loved the overall styling. RAV4 comes loaded with a lomg list of driving assists as well as safety equipment as standard. I have had no problem whatsoever until now. With the $7500 electric vehicle tax-credit, the RAV4's price came down substantially. Calm, experienced and quite helpful staff.

Rav4 Prime is what it sounds like

Pros - More powerful and better mpg, optional fast charging, cornering machine

Cons - Exorbitant packages, Gloss black side mirrors

Best in class warranty to cover that up All plain sailing, a car which is fast, more powerful, better cornering machine, and most of all, efficient and can be charged The packages are exorbitant starting off with the one our came with which costed us an additional 5 grand on the base price. Black upholstery with red stitching running vertical and horizontally on the line. Convenience features like phone projection, multi info display, cupholders and usb ports along with 12v outlet, and a fast charging feature too Albeit the looks resemble to that of regular rav4, I somehow find the character more vigorous. Assists with blind spots and has automatic parking system too with integrated brakes. 360 view monitor, latch seats at back, airbags and seat belts, lane keeping assist etc etc Best in class warranty to cover that up With all the bells and whistles, the total sticker price was $46 grand excluding the additional taxes. No walk in discounts or quick approvals at Modern toyota which is a bit much
