The Toyota Highlander Hybrid has been one of the best-selling hybrid mid-size SUVs of the segment and has always been the go-to moniker for families who wanted excellent comfort and a fuss-free driving experience. With the arrival of the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid for a base selling price of $38,735 for the LE trim and going all the way to $50,415 for the Platinum trim, this mid-size hybrid family SUV also retains the four trim configurations. Both FWD, as well as AWD drivetrains, are also offered.

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

With no changes to the specs and features list, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid also manages to put out an identical 0-60 mph time of 6.6 seconds and offers a combined gas mileage of 35 MPG. The maximum towing capacity of 3,500 lbs is offered too. The features like heated and ventilated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, 11-speaker JBL audio system, 12.3" touchscreen infotainment, etc are offered as standard with the top-of-the-line trims. Three-row SUVs are the modern-day equivalent of the old-school family station wagon, and the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid dutifully gets the job done—and then some. - Caranddriver

Since its launch over a decade ago, the Toyota Highlander has established a good reputation, mainly due to it being a reliable and comfortable mid-size SUV. With the launch of the updated 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, which sees no major changes from the outgoing 2020 model apart from the addition of a few more driver-assistance features, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid retains the same 2.5L naturally aspirated inline-4 engine mated to two electric motors to put out 243 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. A maximum towing capacity of 3,500 lbs and a 0-60 mph time of 6.6 seconds are also offered. Along with that, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid comes with many features as standard like heated and ventilated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, 11-speaker JBL audio system, 12.3" touchscreen infotainment, automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, etc.

Since there aren't any major changes to the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's powertrain and mechanicals, it is also a great option if you are in search of a reliable SUV. The 5-year cost of ownership of the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid comes at around $40,000, which is the lowest of the segment. The car also offered impressive miles per dollar ratio of 13.3. Along with that, Toyota offers many lease and finance deals, which makes it more value for money. The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid can be had for a lease price of $397/month for a down payment of $3,047. This is for a 36-month term. However, if you wish to finance your ride, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is offered for a monthly payment of $591 for an estimated APR of 3.9% and a down payment of $2,000.

Buyers can choose from the standard V-6 engine or go with the fuel-sipping hybrid option; both powertrains are available with all-wheel drive. - Carbuzz

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is available for a starting price of $38,735 for the base LE trim and goes all the way to $48,690 for the Platinum trim. Coming in with the same 4 trim configurations, namely LE, XLE, Limited, and Platinum, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid can be had in both FWD as well as an optional AWD drivetrain, which is offered for an additional price of $1,600. With no major changes to the specs and features list, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid retains the same powertrain and mechanicals of the outgoing model, producing 243 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. The exterior features like a powered sunroof, LED headlights with LED DRLs, 20" alloy wheels, etc are offered with the higher trims too.

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid gets plenty of equipment across the board

The interior also offers many features, to make it the best mid-size family SUV of the segment, like SofTex leatherette upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, powered seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control system, 12.3" touchscreen infotainment, and an 11-speaker JBL audio system. However, many of these features are missed out on the lower trim configuration. The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid also offers a plethora of driver-assistance features like automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with a rear cross-traffic alert, and many more as standard. The 8 exterior colors and the 4 interior leather upholstery palettes are retained as well. Even here, the lower trims only come with 2 interior colors.

2021 Toyota Highlander hybrid SUV Buying Advice

Of the four trim configurations on offer, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid XLE turned out to be the most value-for-money trim of the lot. Available for a base selling price of $41,535 for the FWD drivetrain and $42,910 for the AWD drivetrain, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid XLE comes with all the required features and luxuries like a wireless charging pad, powered sunroof, heated front seats, 12.3" touchscreen infotainment system, and many more as standard. We would also recommend you to opt for the AWD drivetrain since it's more capable and well-priced.

The 2021 Highlander Hybrid is more entertaining to drive than it has any right to be. We like that. - Thecarconnection

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, which comes in four trim configurations for a starting price of $38,735, comes with the same 2.5L naturally aspirated inline-4 engine mated to two electric motors, putting out 243 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. This motor comes mated to an ECVT automatic transmission and the FWD drivetrain as standard. However, there is also an optional AWD drivetrain on offer with all four trims, for an additional MSRP of $1,600. A maximum towing capacity of 3,500 lbs is offered too.

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid gets a 2.5L engine combined with 2 electric motors

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is one of the most comfortable mid-size hybrid SUVs of the segment. With a suspension setup that is softly sprung, this SUV glides over broken roads with ease at slow city speed. As the speed rises during highway riding, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid offers a bit of vertical movement, which is slightly higher than the 2021 Ford Explorer Hybrid. However, it is not terrible by any means. The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's soft suspension setup also makes it a dynamically weak SUV, especially when tackling curvey roads. The body roll and understeer are on the higher side too. Along with that, the steering is light and devoid of feel and feedback, similar to the regular 2021 Highlander.

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid SUV gets a regenerative braking system

What we were most impressed with was the decent acceleration on offer from the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Even with an average 243 hp motor and being one of the heaviest offerings of the segment, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid manages to do the 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds and the quarter-mile in 14.9 seconds. With 13.3" front and rear rotors, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid managed to do the 60-0 mph braking test in 116 feet. In comparison, the regular 2021 Toyota Highlander did the same 0-60 mph and quarter-mile in 7.2 seconds and 15.3 seconds, respectively. However, the 60-0 mph braking distance is done in the same 116 feet.

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid can be had with both FWD as well as an optional AWD drivetrain. However, both of them offer the same gas mileage. Coming with the 17.2-gallon fuel tank capacity, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid offers a city range of 602 miles and a highway range of 584.8 miles. A combined range of 602 miles is offered too. The first and second seating rows provide ample space. Unfortunately, the Highlander's third row is one of the most confining by midsize three-row SUV standards. - Edmunds

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's interior comes with four colors for the higher trims and two interior colors for the lower trims. Available for a base selling price of $38,735, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid comes with no changes to the interior, in comparison to the 2020 model. The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid also offers many features like dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated seats, powered seats, SofTex leatherette upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and many more. With no changes to the interior of the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, this mid-size hybrid SUV is still one of the most comfortable offerings of the segment, that can seat 7 passengers. When it comes to the front row, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid offers impressive headroom and shoulder room. The legroom of 44.2" is the best of the segment as well.

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid comes in 4 interior colors for the higher trim configurations

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's second-row seats are also very comfortable, similar to the front row seats. Even though the 2021 Ford Explorer Hybrid turned out to be slightly more spacious than the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid in terms of second-row space, the headroom and shoulder room of 39.6" and 59" provided by the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is superb. Along with that, we also loved the leatherette upholstery and top-notch under-thigh and lower back support on offer from the seats. However, when it comes to the third row, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid turned out to be a disappointment, due to the mediocre 35.9" headroom and 27.7" legroom. The cargo capacity of 16 cu ft is not the best of the lot as well.

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid turned out to be quite impressive for the first and second-row seats, due to good headroom, legroom, and shoulder room on offer. However, the third-row space was quite mediocre, mainly due to the terrible headroom and legroom. In comparison, the 2021 Ford Explorer Hybrid and the 2021 Kia Sorento Hybrid offered better space, especially when it comes to the third row. The cargo capacity offered by the 2021 Kia Sorento Hybrid turned out to be the best of the segment, which is 21.5 cu ft and is followed by the 2021 Ford Explorer Hybrid's 18.2 cu ft. When it comes to the infotainment front, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid offers an 8" touchscreen system for the lower trims and a 12.3" touchscreen system with the Limited and Platinum trims. The audio is handled by a 6-speaker audio system and an 11-speaker JBL audio system.

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid gets a 12.3" touchscreen infotainment system

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid also offers all the connectivity features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, and many more, with both the infotainment systems. Other features like SiriusXM radio, voice recognition, Safety Connect, etc are offered too. The larger 12.3" touchscreen infotainment system turned out to be excellent, with great touch sensitivity, viewing angles, and no lags and stutters. However, the 8" unit wasn't the most intuitive system out there. The audio experience through the 6-speaker audio system is also average at best, which can be opted out for the impressive 11-speaker JBL audio system. Some of the interior and infotainment features on offer with the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid are:

  • Powered sunroof
  • 12.3" touchscreen infotainment system
  • Android Auto
  • Apple CarPlay
  • SiriusXM radio

The 2021 Highlander Hybrid’s exterior is an adventure, but the sharp interior is worth the trek. - Caranddriver

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid breaks stereotypes with its imposing front fascia and finely sculpted body lines. Even though the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, which is available for a base selling price of $38,735, comes with no changes to the exterior design, the timeless design helps the mid-size hybrid SUV to come out as one of the most elegant looking offerings of the segment. The front view of the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid retains the hexagonal blacked-out grille with the chrome lining surrounding it coupled with a massive air dam and a silver-colored skid plate. The protruding hood line and automatic LED headlights with LED DRLs add more character to the front fascia too. The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid also offered an impressive ground clearance of 8", making it quite capable in off-road terrains.

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid looks sharp and futuristic

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid retains the 8 exterior color palettes, all of which are offered for no additional price, unlike the rivals. When we come to the side view, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid sees no changes from the outgoing 2020 model. The massive 20" alloy wheels wrapped in P235/55R20 tires are standard with the Limited and Platinum trims and offer unmatched performance and ride quality, apart from looking cool. The subtle fender flare, the blacked-out pillars, and the roof rack rails offer more character to this family SUV. The rear view of the 2021 Highlander Hybrid comes with the LED taillights for the higher trims. the silver skid plate, an integrated roof spoiler, and bulky bumper design, all of which add to the look. However, the length and width of 192.5" and 75.8" are not the best of the segment, and this does affect the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's interior space adversely.

The interior space and features were also better with the 2021 Explorer Hybrid. However, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid offered a long list of standard driver-assistance features. It is also more fuel-efficient and came out with the best in class 0-60 mph time and quarter-mile time too.

2021 Toyota Highlander hybrid SUV Final Verdict

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is a comfortable and powerful three-row hybrid SUV that can tick most of the requirements of a large family. The performance and gas mileage on offer is quite impressive from the hybrid motor. We also liked the long list of standard safety and driver-assistance features on offer. Coupled that with a comfortable ride and Toyota brand value and reliability, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is hard to fault. However, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is not the most spacious offering of the segment, especially in terms of the third row. The interior design is also not as impressive as the rivals. Hence, if you are alright with these issues, the 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, which is available for a base selling price of $38,735, should be on your shortlist.

Pros - Everything is great

Cons - None

2021 Toyota Highlander I got my self a top trim of highlander, So its not necessary to describe how great is it but still I would say it is simply the best and greatest car of my life. Exceptional in everythiing from inside out There is nothing that this Car can't do. It is superb everywhere. Driven like the meanest thing on road.

Driving our new suv

Pros - Utility, reliable, smooth

Cons - Sluggish powertrain and numb steering wheel

2021 Toyota Highlander could be a better family suv if it sets the steering and gas response right Through and through an suv that only knows how to drive without breaking down. Sluggish acceleration and numb steering wheel are two things I've found out of order Hybrid nature that helps to save on fuel Due to it's smooth driving, seats feel even more cosy. Having a sunroof would have been better Looks dark inside out and I chose this combination so that I don't have to clean it up every week The fact that it is reliable and won't leave us stranded on the road despite the flaws in the driveability Could get better steering and gas response. Still a pretty good family suv At the price of $788, we got ourselves a good economical family suv. They didn't deliver the car on time which makes me question my decision of getting it from them

mileage machine

Pros - Beasty look, good and high seating capacity, great actual mpg

Cons - No height adjustment available for the passenger seat, middle seat in the second row is very firm

yes At lower speeds, the suv is handled by electric motors, as you revv up, it uses more gas. The drivig experience of this beauty is just great. 8people can easily fit inside, the actual mileage figure which I have observed so far is 34 with 4 people in, digital display shows actual speed The seats are very comfortable and roomy. The visibility is very good, you can see the hood from the driver's seat The design is feels fresh and appealing, though is has got 18" wheels, the ground clearance is great It has Toyota safety sense 2.0 with lane tracing assist. Road sign assist which reads the signs and alerts Very much I got a good deal at Bob Howard Toyota here in Oklahoma city very good
