However, the rogue charm of this mid-size SUV had not been at its peak lately, and before the Highlander became a name that simply faded into oblivion, Toyota has gone all-out refurbishing this iconic three-row SUV.

Highlander has received a complete overhaul for 2020, with a much better styling, resculpted interior, and several mechanic changes. Making its presence felt in the Highlander lineup is the Highlander Hybrid, which seems like a strong hybrid entry for 2020. The 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid witnesses a downsize of its powertrain with a 2.5L Inline-4 engine replacing the 3.5L V6.

However, this change brings along an enhancement of fuel-efficiency for this ride. Apart from this, the 2020 Highlander Hybrid has received several other changes as well which makes this ride more accomplished to take on the contenders such as the Toyota Lexus RX 450h and the Acura MDX Sport Hybrid.

2020 Toyota Highlander hybrid SUV Engine and Performance

7.9/10

The 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid has undergone several changes, and a lot of them are in the ride’s powerhouse setup. The 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid gets a 2.5L Inline-4 engine, which replaces the 3.5L V6 of the 2019 Highlander. In addition to a 2.5L DOHC Inline-4 engine, the Highlander also possesses 2 electric motors in a setup that is more compact and efficient than before.

How fast is the Toyota Highlander?

The loss of 2 cylinders, obviously affects the Toyota Highlander Hybrid’s sprinting capabilities. Though the exact off the mark figures have not yet been made public for the 2020 Highlander Hybrid, we are pretty sure that the degradation of the powertrain will adversely affect the acceleration figures for the 2020 Highlander Hybrid.

2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 0-60 MPH in just 6.6* sec

The electric motors of the Highlander Hybrid provide enough torque at low-end rev ranges, yet the reduction of 66 ponies, makes the acceleration feel laggy on the 2020 Highlander Hybrid.

What about the braking performance of the Toyota Highlander?

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid gets power-assisted ventilated 12.9-inch front disc brakes and solid 12.2-inch solid disc brakes at the rear wheels.

2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Front Brake is 12.9 in.

The exact 60-0 deceleration figures are not yet available for the 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, yet the braking performance of this car feels just fine. The brake pedal is aptly weighted and feels easy to modulate. The brake bite is decent, however, there is some sway under panic braking scenarios.

What about its driving dynamics?

The 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid underpins the company’s latest global architecture and this change does a great deal of favor to the Highlander in terms of how this hefty hybrid handles.

2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Front View

The 2020 Highlander Hybrid is much easier to maneuver and handle than its preceding model. The steering wheel of the car feels just rightly weighted and makes the driver feel more connected to the road. As a result, the car handles curves and corners with ease and grace. The Highlander Hybrid feels surprisingly sporty to handle for a three-row SUV that weighs more than 4500 pounds. The ride exhibits confidence when going around the corner in speed to some extent.

Apart from this, the 2020 Highlander Hybrid gets is befitted with sturts up front and a multi-link rear suspension. This setup further elevates the game for this hefty SUV. The Highlander Hybrid absorbs most of the bumps and breaks without really transmitting the after-effects to the cabin.

2020 Toyota Highlander hybrid SUV Fuel Economy

7.8/10

The reduction in the power figures for the 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is inversely proportional to the ride’s fuel-efficiency. The 2020 Highlander Hybrid is claimed to deliver a city mpg of 35 and a highway mpg of 34. Combining these figures we get an mpg figure of 35, which is an absolute eye-opener for the fuel-conscious buyers out there.

The 35 combined miles per gallon is 6 more miles than the 2019 model’s 29 combined mpg. Apart from this, the Highlander Hybrid packs in a number of features that optimize the efficiency of the very last drop of gasoline inside the tank. The Predictive Efficient Drive (PED) feature offered inside the Highlander Hybrid learns the driver’s daily driving habits, road conditions, and traffic conditions, and charges the batteries accordingly.

The Stop and Start feature, which is offered as standard in the Highlander Hybrid further strengthens the ride’s bond with gas, as this function kills the engine when the vehicle approaches an absolute halt, and instantly restarts it when the driver lifts his foot off the brake pedal.

The cabin of the 2020 Highlander Hybrid is well-put but feels somewhat cluttered and a bit too busy. The dashboard hosts a number of buttons and knobs in a symmetrical shape under the focal touchscreen panel. This arrangement lends all the major control within the driver’s range but makes the dash look laden with physical control buttons.

2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Front Seats

Apart from that, the quality of the materials used inside the cabin is just fine. Regardless of the trim you choose, the highlander looks premium in all its iterations, it’s just that the level of this plushness keeps going up a notch with the escalation in trims.

Getting in and out of the Highlander is a smooth task, owing to the wide-opening doors, and appropriate seat height. The front seats are wide and feel soft to be in, yet maintain a tight driving position.

Speaking of space, the front and the second-row seats offer ample space in all directions for all occupants to be at ease at all times. However, third-row seating is not very welcoming and is best suited for children only.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

The 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid gets an Entune infotainment system, which beams up all the information on an 8-inch or an optional 12.3-inch touchscreen panel. The screen presents you with all the vital information in the form of crisp graphics. The touchscreen panel is great at feedbacks and reacts instantly to the driver’s inputs. Some of the other prominent infotainment features of the Highlander Hybrid are:

2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Has 12.3-inch Touchscreen
  • 6 speakers
  • SiriusXM AM/FM/HD/Satellite with seek-scan

Fold-down the second-row seats as well and you can transport enough luggage to reside in another city for a month or two, as there is more than 84 cubic feet of space on offer.

The 2020 Toyota Highlander is all set to storm the segment with great styling work. The 2020 Toyota Highlander has received several styling tweaks and looks all fresh and loaded. The 2020 Highlander underpins a modular platform, shared with a number of family siblings such as the Camry and the RAV4.

On the front end, Highlander gets a much more conventional grille, that replaces the outgoing model’s bulky grille. The vertical parallel lines running across the 2019 Highlander have been replaced with an inverted trapezoid grille.

2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Three Quarter View

On the side profile, the Highlander has gained a lot more mass, giving the ride a typical SUV silhouette. There are well-defined creases and angular lines that adorn the door panels, giving the car a hint of sophistication. The lines travel all the way back towards the trunk lid.

2020 Toyota Highlander hybrid SUV Competition

7.2/10

Toyota Highlander Hybrid vs. Lexus RX 450h

Lexus RX 450h is the family sibling to the Highlander Hybrid, tracing its roots to the Japanese auto-marquee. However, here the RX 450h is more of a competitor to the Highlander Hybrid. Prices for the RX 450h starts from $46,800. The Rx 450h houses a 3.5L V6 engine, which along with 3 electric motors, belts out 308 hp and 247 lb.-ft. Of torque. The RX 450h was an absolute winner against the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid, but the tables seem to have turned now. The 2020 Highlander Hybrid is a much better package than the 2020 RX 450h, with a more urbane design language, greater fuel-efficiency, and utility. The Lexus RX 450h, however, does offer a better interior and greater sprinting capabilities.

2020 Lexus RX 450h

Toyota Highlander Hybrid vs. Acura MDX Sport Hybrid

The Acura MDX Sport Hybrid is the most expensive option of this lot with prices starting from $52,900. The MDX Hybrid obtains its octane from a 3L V6 engine, which churns out 321 hp, making the MDX the sturdiest hybrid SUV offering in this range. The MDX is overall a better package, offering great performance and a truly spacious interior. However, the Highlander does what the hybrids are meant for- cost-saving, be it in terms of the procuring cost, or the fuel-efficiency or maintenance of the vehicle.

2020 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid

2020 Toyota Highlander hybrid SUV Final Verdict

The Toyota Highlander was not such a lucrative option until the year 2019, but the 2020 Highlander Hybrid is out and is high on hopes. The Japanese auto-marquee has put in a lot of worthy efforts to magnify this hybrid’s capabilities, and the Highlander Hybrid doesn’t disappoint.

Gunning the engine gives out quite some punch despite its big built and hybrid nature. This is my first hybrid vehicle and I’m fairly impressed with the motor driving it under that hood. Since we’re talking about hybrid, mentioning fuel economy is not what one would like to skip. It has a whopping gas average of close to 40 miles a gallon.
