The name Toyota has been around since generations and probably the things everyone can relate it with are reliability, caliber and utility. Much like all the other Toyotas, even their Corolla carries forward the same qualities. Its transformation into a hatchback in 2019 only enhanced its reachability to an even wider crowd. As it is said, “Change is the only Constant” - the Toyota Corolla Hatchback today flaunts upgraded interiors, integrated technology and modern styling.

Besides varying body designs the 2020 Corolla hatch also offers two different transmission choices. There are also as many as three trims to choose from. In all, there are very few chances that you could go wrong with a Toyota, specially if it is this small but mighty Corolla hatchback. Turns out size doesn't really matter.

Overall Rating

It surely is a good time to be a hatchback fan. The 2020 Corolla Hatchback now inculcates superior styling and gets many valueable features too. The utility and reliability of Corolla Hatchback are unquestionable. Toyota has made sure to cover the aspirations and requirements of the wider section of the population, thereby, this Corolla offers five different configurations and optional packages to play with, all at a price variation of almost $4000 in the lineup. The Base SE trim is priced at $20,290 and the top trim XSE goes up to $24,340. Further, for drivers looking for a sportier look and feel, the Nightshade edition, with a blacked out trim and a new black roof, is a must have.

The 2020 Corolla Hatchback is a part of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform imparting not only a new body structure but also new approaches to engineering, design, assembly and materials. The new Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 as standard entails a lot more confidence in the Corolla Hatchback. The inclusion of Android Auto to the already existing Apple Carplay and Amazon Alexa completes the trio. The powertrain options satisfy the need and fulfill the utility of the Hatchback.

The Toyota Corolla Hatchback competes with the likes of Honda Fit, Hyundai Elantra GT and Subaru Impreza. Thought this segment is slowly fading, the introduction of restyled models by different automakers is inspiring confidence.

2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Features

8.3/10

The Toyota Corolla hatchback introduced for the 2020 model year seems to be very much a part of its predecessor. The Corolla hatchback was redesigned with character for the 2019 year, changing the perception of the American audience for the Toyota. The 2020 Corolla Hatchback is a four-door hatchback that is available in three trim options. A Nightshade trim is the newest addition which is adds blacked accents all over. Under the hood, a 168 hp 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine powers the Corolla, carried forward from 2019 Corolla Hatchback. The automaker offers either a standard six-speed manual transmission or the optional continuously variable transmission. The middle trim i.e. Nightshade is only available with a CVT option. This reliable and intriguing Toyota Corolla hatch is priced affordably at $20,290 and goes up to $24,340. Within the range, a buyer can configure the Corolla Hatchback to perfectly match his needs.

The 2020 Corolla is packed with plentiful standard features. The standard exterior and interior features include LED headlights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 60/40 split-folding rear bench seat, automatic climate control. Further, the infotainment features are tech-savvy which includes Bluetooth, Wi-Fi hotspot, an 8-inch touchscreen, and a six-speaker audio system with two USB ports and Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility. The most important safety features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning (with pedestrian and cyclist detection plus automatic emergency braking), and lane-keeping assist making all the more reliable Toyota a right pick.

The favorite standard feature which manages to catch the attention is the integration of Android Auto, which earlier was missing, and the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0. Automatic-transmission models also include a full-speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and lane-trace assist. The top trim XSE adds dual-zone automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, leather upholstery with cloth inserts, and HD and satellite radio. Further, Toyota provides multiple optional packages for the buyer to play with.

What do we recommend?

The best combination of the Toyota Corolla Hatchback would be the XSE with automatic CVT. For a price of $24,340, it offers way more safety and utility features than any other rival. Apart from all standard equipment and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, it also includes dual-zone automatic climate control, blind-spot monitoring. The impressive CVT is practical and more importantly saves on the fuel.

2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Engine and Performance

8.0/10

Under the hood, the Toyota Corolla Hatchback uses naturally aspirated 2.0L Inline 4-cylinder engine pumping 168 hp @ 6600 rpm and 151 ft-lbs. @ 4800 rpm of torque. This Toyota feels adequately powered. Though the engine peaks the torque all the way up at 4800 rpm, while charging forward it jams the gas even for the slightest movement, especially at highway speeds.

2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback has 6 Speed Manual Transmission

The front-wheel-drive is standard with two transmission options. It's a tough choice between the six-speed manual transmission and continuously variable automatic transmission. Undoubtedly, the manual is fun to drive but the automatic CVT is more practical and saves on fuel economy. The automatic CVT unit not only opens doors for more options but also adds to the safety system of the 2020 Corolla Hatch.

Toyota’s engine is relatively small but it fares much better in comparison to its rival. Topping the list among the segment's rivals, the 168 hp Toyota engine leads the way. Though Toyota is heavier even after a newly founded platform but drives with confidence in all conditions.

How fast is the Toyota Corolla Hatchback?

The Toyota Corolla Hatchback is aerodynamically designed adding up to the sporty look, wherein the top trim XSE is considered to be the sportiest. The standard 6-speed manual with downshift-rev-matching is easy-to-go and joyus. But the convenience and practicality of the continuously variable transmission may be preferred. The CVT here is one of the smoothest and most engaging in the segment. It employs a clever feature of a built-in launch gear, i.e., an “iMT” button that delivers instantaneous acceleration.

The exciting transmission makes Corolla Hatchback a great car for even the beginners as it showcases the ability to manipulate the engine rpm at any speed. Also, the standard front-wheel drive with all the trims is common with the segment except the Subaru.

Though it is irking that the Corolla Hatchback reaches the peak torque at such high rpm, almost keeping the engine revving high at all times and jamming the fuel. This may be an indication to the automaker that it is time to opt for a turbo engine. In comparison to rivals in the segment, this Toyota has an average acceleration.

What about the braking performance of Toyota Corolla Hatchback?

The 2020 Corolla Hatchback is equipped with power-assisted and ventilated 11.5-inch front disc brakes and solid 10.5-inch rear disc brakes, supplemented by Anti-lock Brake System. The brake pedal feels a bit firm but reacts quickly and stays uniform to maintain stability and reliability.

2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback has Rear Brake of 11.5 in.

The 2020 Corolla Hatchback also features standard technology like Automatic Electric Parking Brake, Brake Hold, Brake Assist, Smart Stop system complementing the braking performance. When the system is on, Brake Hold is designed to keep the brakes engaged after the driver brings the vehicle to a complete stop. Also, Smart Stop Technology, when engaged, reduces power to help the brakes bring the vehicle to a stop.

The Toyota Corolla Hatchback has higher curb weight and so is the brake size, only trailing from the Hyundai Elantra which offers exquisite braking. The Corolla Hatchback will not disobey and performs as expected.

How is the ride quality of Toyota Corolla Hatchback?

The sharply styled Corolla hatchback got longer, wider and lower after it was re-designed in 2019. Surprisingly, the Corolla Hatchback is fun to drive and is quite engaging. While driving down the town, it is entertaining. Also, while cornering its is smooth and feels in its element with nicely responsive steering.

Overall, this hatchback provides a nimble ride. It maintains a great balance between composure and comfort. The body stays under control but may feel soft while moving over undulating surface.

2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback's Front View

The base trim is equipped with 16-inch wheels for maximum agility and comfort, whereas the top trim flaunts bigger wheels which ride a bit rough. Also, the interior feels fairly quiet but on hitting the accelerator pedal, vibrations can be felt inside as if the engine was working overtime.

The 2020 Corolla hatchback with the six-speed manual transmission returns decent EPA ratings in the city and on highways too. On the other hand, however, the automatic unit gets all the more impressive fuel efficiency numbers.

The Corolla Hatchback apart from having a much better fuel economy also features a competitive fuel capacity. 2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Interior

8.2/10

The 2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback's upscale interior features are carried from its younger generation. For an economy car, the interiors are way forward and affluent. The cabin is intelligently designed with proper placement of the features to enhance the convenience. The cabin has soft-touch surfaces, complemented by real seam stitching. Seat comfort is extremely good, and there’s even available power lumbar for the driver and power-adjustable front seats are standard.

2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback's Rear Seats

We found rear-seat legroom to be a bit tight. It can easily accommodate kids but might get difficult for a tall adult. The longer and wider Corolla Hatchback did not exactly translate in increased space and roominess. This way the Corolla Hatch fails to impress when it comes to the rear seating. The nicer materials and a sophisticated layout, that's a little techier and ergonomically friendly to the driver, is something to look out for.

The 2020 Hatchback has decent cupholders and door pockets which means there’s some room for small items. Though, in front of the shift lever, the shelf which seems to be placed as a phone holder is out of bounds, as it is too small for it. For family, the Corolla gets decent amount of space to include rear-facing child safety seats. The car seat anchors are easily accessible too.

How is the infotainment features of the Toyota Corolla Hatchback?

The 2020 Corolla Hatchback comes standard with exquisite infotainment and technology features to outshine in the segment. For such economical pricing, it is a pandora's box with a lot to surprise its buyers.

2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Has 8-inch Infotainment Screen

The high-mounted, large 8-inch Entune touchscreen sits prominently on the center dashboard and is visually appealing. The hard buttons beside it make navigating the infotainment system much easier. The voice recognition system is efficient enough and reasonably accurate. Though the navigation system is missing. Thankfully, Toyota this year has integrated the Android Auto along with the existing Apple Carplay and Amazon Alexa compatibility.

Key Infotainment Features:

  • Audio Plus includes six speakers
  • 8-in. touch-screen
  • HD Radio and SiriusXM with 3-month All Access trial
  • USB media port and two USB charge ports
  • Advanced voice recognition
  • Hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth
  • Wireless technology
  • Android Auto & Apple CarPlay & Amazon Alexa compatible

How spacious is the cargo of Toyota Corolla Hatchback?

What the Corolla Hatchback lack in back seat space is compensated by a large cargo space, which is quite generous. The boxy shape of the cargo adds to the utility. Space is still limited by the small size of these Corollas, but offer ample cargo room in comparison with their competitors, especially with the back seats folded down.

2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback's Cargo Volume

Taking into consideration the Corolla Hatch's wheelbase, its trunk is not all that big. Other hatchbacks in the lineup, with almost similar wheelbases, do a lot better to make more efficent use of the space available.

Toyota's designers have come to all guns blazing with the last redesign of Toyota Corolla Hatchback. The bold look of Corolla Hatchback is reflected with its rounded, muscular physique combined with the 16 or 18-inch wheels. The shape gives the Hatchback an athletic look. Also, the Toyota Corolla Hatchback is designed to be low, leading to better driving and handling by lowering the center of gravity.

2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback's Left Side View

The all-LED headlamps and taillamps, feature a diffusing inner lens, have been designed to highlight the Corolla Hatchback’s stout stance. The hatch is made from (TSOP) Toyota Super Olefin Polymer which is lightweight and makes it easy to open and close the hatch on thid hatchback, and also helps aid fuel efficiency.

The 2020 Corolla Hatchback fetches an impressive 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA. Also, the 2019 Corolla Hatchback was 2019’s Top Safety Pick and managed a “Good” rating from IIHS. We will have to wait for the 2020 model to be tested by the IIHS.

  • Standard lane-departure prevention

Toyota Corolla Hatchback Vs Honda Fit

The Toyota Corolla Hatchback is synonymous with enjoyable handling as well as smooth ride quality. It is laced with lots of standard advanced driving assists. Toyota is more powerful as well but also has a higher curb weight. The Honda Fit is equally good in terms of fuel efficiency and offers roomy interiors along with exceptional cargo capacity. Both offer a long list of safety and infotainment features but Honda’s infotainment is much more responsive.

2020 Honda Fit

Toyota Corolla Hatchback Vs Hyundai Elantra GT

The Elantra GT leads with a stylish cabin and comes packed with plenty of features. With more cargo space and well-tuned steering and controlled handling, the Elantra GT hatchback is great fun to drive. Though the Elantra has a lackluster fuel economy and disappointing acceleration resulting from a groaning base engine.

2020 Hyundai Elantra GT

Toyota Corolla Hatchback Vs Subaru Impreza

The Toyota Corolla Hatchback comes with a front-wheel-drive. Whereas the Subaru Impreza hatchback with an all-wheel drive as standard, securing favored handling and wet-weather traction. The Subaru though lags on the acceleration front, with transmission making loud noise under heavy load. Also, fuel economy takes a hit, making it unfriendly and un-affordable. Also, Toyota Corolla flaunts upscale interiors when compared to the Subaru Impreza.

2020 Subaru Impreza Hatchback

2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Final Verdict

The 2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback comes equipped with a lot more than what it is priced at. It is a comprehensive package, with modern styling and performance which is hard to resist. Toyota with its 2019 redesign took a big leap ahead showing its competitiveness in the segment. This Toyota has managed to inspire confidence with a funky compact hatchback and serious standard safety features.

It drives super smoothly and is extremely great on the gas. I'm unable to get the exact figure of the gas consumption but it’s good.

mileage of my hatchback is good but the tank capacity is small

Pros - Mileage, adjustable side mirror, auto highbeam lights

Cons - Tank capacity

Good in gas mileage but the size of the tank is small. This makes me to fill the gas frequently.

My Hatchback is good in performance but small inreior size

It drives very smoothly on the normal mode but when I push on the sport mode means the tire would stimulate in that instance and gives me a great acceleration.

Sportier yet efficient.

The engine is great, It packs a punch, not like the sedan trim. We always wanted powerful hatches from Toyota and they have finally listened to us. The CVT is smooth and compliments the engine well. The handling is another ace that Corolla hatch has under its sleeves. It is agile be it on highways or cities filled with traffic.
