The Toyota Camry has never been an enthusiast's preference for a mid-size sedan. The Camry was always seen as a fairly reliable and efficient mode of transportation, but nothing more than that. However, with the arrival of the Toyota Camry TRD, Toyota has managed to remove this image to a large extent. The 2021 Toyota Camry TRD, which is available for sale at a base MSRP of $32,185, comes in a single trim configuration and retains all the mechanicals like the 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 motor mated to the FWD drivetrain and 8-speed automatic transmission, making it one of the most fun to drive mid-size sedan.

2021 Toyota Camry TRD

Because of this, the 2021 Toyota Camry TRD offers 301 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. This helps the midsize sedan to give out a 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 135 MPH. Combined gas mileage of 25 MPG is also on offer. Competing with the likes of the 2021 Honda Accord Sport, 2021 Mazda 6 Grand Touring, and the 2021 Nissan Altima SR, we will find out how well the 2021 Toyota Camry TRD stack up against the rivals in this performance review.

2021 Toyota Camry TRD Engine: Power, Torque, and Transmission Options

The 2021 Toyota Camry TRD, which is available for sale at a base MSRP of $32,185, is a mid-size performance sedan that is one of the best in terms of performance and driving dynamics. The 2021 Toyota Camry TRD comes with a 3.5L naturally aspirated V6, which is a DOHC 24-Valve D-4S Dual Injection motor with Dual VVT-i. The car manages to put out 301 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. This engine offers a compression ratio of 11.8:1. This mid-size sedan comes with a front-engine and FWD drivetrain layout as well.

2021 Toyota Camry TRD has a 3.5L NA V6 engine

The transmission duty of the 2021 Toyota Camry TRD is done by a Direct Shift-8AT 8-speed Electronically Controlled automatic Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) and sequential shift mode. The 2021 Toyota Camry TRD feels very refined on startup with almost no sound and vibrations filtering to the cabin. The sedan feels very eager from the get-go with a good amount of acceleration on offer. The low-end torque of the 3.5L V6 needs a special mention here, which helps in providing great initial acceleration. The top-end performance is also quite good, and the V6 engine sings beautifully throughout the rev range.

In comparison, the 2021 Camry TRD blows away the competition in terms of performance. The behemoth 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 is no match to the pesky 4 cylinders that comes in its rivals, and hence the 2021 Camry TRD munches ahead with close to 301 hp. But the torque is slightly lower than all the rivals, due to it having a naturally aspirated engine and all the others offering a turbocharger. The 2021 Mazda 6 Grand Touring, which comes at a base MSRP of $32,300, offers the highest torque of 310 lb-ft compared to 267 lb-ft offered by the 2021 Camry TRD. The 2021 Honda Accord Sport and the 2021 Nissan Altima SR also offer a better torque figure.

2021 Toyota Camry TRD Acceleration: 0-60 and Quarter Mile Times

Put the foot down from a standstill and you will be surprised with the acceleration on offer. The 2021 Camry TRD manages to put a smile on your face with its beautifully sounding engine. The car hits the rev limiter at 6500 RPM very easily, and the engine feels refined and smooth throughout the rev range. The front engine and the FWD drivetrain layout of the 2021 Camry TRD do pose problems for the traction of the car, and the car keeps hunting for traction at the launch, which is notified in the instrument console with a traction control warning. There is also no launch control on offer for the 2021 Camry TRD, which could have been a great add-on.

2021 Toyota Camry TRD accelerates from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds

After the initial drama, when the car finally gets the traction it needs, it leaps forward with great enthusiasm. Also, since the car doesn't get any forced induction, there is none of the kick in the pants feels associated with some of its competitors. The gear shifts are very smooth although could have been a bit faster. The gearbox shifts quite well in the auto mode and even in the manual mode, but the shifts are not very fast with the paddle shifters, and that takes away the fun. All of this helps the 2021 Toyota Camry TRD to give out a 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 14.4 seconds. This sedan can also reach a top speed of 135 MPH.

The 2021 Toyota Camry TRD is the runner-up amongst the rivals, completing the 0-60 MPH in just 5.8 seconds. The 2021 Honda Accord Sport turned out to be the fastest, taking just 5.5 seconds for the 0-60 mph test. The 2021 Nissan Altima SR gets a close third with 5.9 seconds to do 0-60 mph. However, the 2021 Mazda 6 Grand Touring could only do it in a much higher 8.4 seconds, making it the slowest of the lot.

2021 Toyota Camry TRD Brakes: F/R Rotor Dimensions and Stopping Distance

The 2021 Toyota Camry TRD gets an updated braking system from Toyota in comparison to the lower trims. It gets bigger rotors and 2-piston calipers. The car comes with all-around disc brakes with the front getting power-assisted ventilated discs and solid discs at the rear. The 2021 Camry TRD comes with an anti-lock braking system as a standard that helps you get out of tricky situations with ease.

2021 Toyota Camry TRD offers sharp braking performance

The brakes of the 2021 Toyota Camry TRD are quite strong and don't feel spongy or grabby. There is also a great amount of bite on offer. The brakes are very progressive too. This will be highly appreciated by the new drivers due to their ease of use. The ABS is also not very intrusive, which further compliments the overall braking experience.

The 2021 Toyota Camry TRD managed to do quite similar to most of its competitors posing a 60-0 MPH distance of 118 feet, which is very commendable. In comparison, the 2021 Honda Accord Sport took a slightly longer distance of 120 feet. However, the 2021 Mazda 6 Grand Touring and the 2021 Nissan Altima SR lead the pack with 116 feet of 60-0 mph stopping distance.

The upgrades make the Camry TRD more engaging to drive than the rest of the lineup, even if its cat-back exhaust system doesn't sound as thrilling." - Caranddriver

2021 Toyota Camry TRD Ride and Handling

Having 301 hp from a 3.5L V6 and being an FWD mid-size sedan with a heavy curb weight of 3,572 lbs, the 2021 Toyota Camry TRD handles quite well. There is some understeer on offer due to the weight of the car mainly concentrated towards the front, but it is not bad for a family sedan. The body roll is also well controlled due to the stiffer TRD suspension setup offered by Toyota. The suspension is lowered for the TRD version along with larger diameter anti-roll bars. Another addition is the stiffer underbody braces and V-brace behind the rear seats. Since the suspension is on the harder side, it makes its presence felt inside the cabin at lower speeds.

The 2021 Camry TRD also comes with dampers with internal return springs and revised valving, which further compliments the ride and handling of the car. Attributing all these, the high-speed stability of the Camry TRD is the best in class. The steering is also greatly tuned with perfect weight and good precision. The car darts in and around the city streets with so much ease. The steering is decently light at slow speeds, but weighs up well at highway speeds, giving more confidence to the driver. The highway riding experience was also excellent in the 2021 Toyota Camry TRD.

2021 Toyota Camry TRD Performance Verdict

The 2021 Toyota Camry TRD, which is available for a selling price of $32,185, turned out to be a great mid-size sedan in terms of performance. It's got a gem of an engine mated to a great automatic transmission. The car is also fun to chuck around corners and offers decent ride quality and brakes too. For someone looking to buy a sporty mid-size sedan, the 2021 Toyota Camry TRD must not be overlooked.

TRD is getting sharper and better

Pros - MY camry trd knows how to outperform, sequential smooth shifts, it has the best inside out design

Cons - Front grille has too much gloss, the rocker panel is too close to the ground

Toyota's Camry TRD is getting better and sharper with each year wihout any leftovers on the reliability One fun ride is how I can sum up my entire driving experience of TRD camry. It has the best transmission and power to compliment the driving. The Handling is pretty soft because of low cg and the sharp aerodynamic design keeps it composed on highways TRd has the best spoiler, dual tone paint job, brushed aluminum tipped exhausts, red brakes calipers inside the flat black alloy rims, and star safety system The seats have sport red inserts and are actually blended well with the name TRD. As pretty as it looks from the outside, it has an equally gratifying class on the inside You should look at it once in this dual tone gray/black paint job , flat black alloys and visible red brake calipers, red striped rocker panel and spoiler at the back. The only thing I might change soon is the too much glossy front grille Safety is taken care by the Toyota star safety sense I think it's going to be as reliable as a work horse The impeccable value of Toyota vehicles is not something new to the market. They not only make good looking and performing cars, they also focus on the long term reliability as well I always get a cheerful welcome and timely servicing from them

The TRD Camry

Pros - TRD exclusive body styling. Smooth engine. Exhaust note.

Cons - No wireless charging. Standard audio system.

It definitely is an enthusiast's car who likes to take his/her family along. The engine packs a lot of punch in a smooth, refined manner. Its sporty enough to make even everyday driving fun. I wish TRD trim came with premium sound system and dual climate control like in top trims. It does get a backup camera, TFT display and smart key sytem. The generous red stitching over the complete interior makes the cabin look sporty enough. There's good amount of space in trunk as well. The two-tone paint job and aerodynamic body kit makes the Camry look sharp and stunning. It definitely turns a lot of heads for its price. All driving aids are standard in every 2021 Camry. I have total faith in Toyota's brand image in terms of reliability. I did manage to break a low APR finance deal. Scott was great throughtout the process, answering phone calls and texts without an hiccup! Great place to buy!
