One of the best-sellers among mid-size sedans, the Toyota Camry claims peace of mind as a standard feature for all the right reasons. Its flavor of class, comfort, efficiency, and affordable price tag are enticing enough for buyers looking for "luxury on a budget" even today. What further makes it stand out in its class is its incredible reliability and a still available V6 engine. Despite all its hard efforts, the only grouse that it always had was its uninspiring driveability.

However, things changed when the 2018 Camry underwent a thorough redesign spinning-off its eighth generation. The refreshed popular sedan now with enhanced proportions, not only looked more interesting and fresh than ever, but was also more engaging to drive. Come 2020 and the story gets even better with its visit to the TRD shop and Android Auto finally joining the features list. Above all, the 2020 Toyota Camry proudly flashes its newly learned optional AWD skills.

Expert Review

Overall Rating

One of the primary reasons behind the Camry's immense success over the years, is its consistent value proposition. Even today, it covers all the grounds that a mid-sized sedan with an MSRP of $24,425 should. Even though it underwent the most severe changes ever for its eighth generation, it still retained all of its essentialities.

On the outside it wears a timeless elegance which is now more pronounced than ever. You might not like it, but you can't hate it either. On the inside it greets you with a clean and premium layout wrapped in soft-touch material, as always. Even on the powertrain front, the three available configurations makes sure there's something for everyone.

Even with such a wholesome package though, it's not very easy to survive, especially in today's highly competitive market. No intimidation from the Euro-American league, but the Camry faces some stiff competition from its fellow countrymen. The likes of Honda Accord, Nissan Altima and Subaru Legacy, go head-to-head with this esteemed icon.

2020 Toyota Camry Features

7.7/10

Similar to its outgoing model, the 2020 Toyota Camry is available in five different configurations, L, LE, SE, XLE and XSE. New for 2020 is the sporty "Camry TRD", that we have reviewed separately. All the available trims come standard with a 2.5 liter inline-4 engine, with the optional upgrade to a 3.5 liter V6 on the XLE and XSE. Prices for the 2020 Camry start at $24,425 and go beyond $35,000.

The frugal yet eco-friendly Camry Hybrid and the darker Camry SE Nightshade Edition introduced in 2019, remain unchanged though. However, the party trick for 2020 is the $1400 optional AWD that can be hooked to any of the trims, except the base “L”. Moving across the trim ladder not only unlocks more premium features but also a distictinctive style package on the SE and XSE.

We Recommend

We recommend picking up the mid-specked "Camry SE" trim and pairing it up with the $1400 optional AWD. Without vacating a larger volume of your wallet, the SE offers aptly loaded feature list along with some distinctive styling upgrades. The optional AWD adds some driving fun and helps it negotiate slippery surfaces with more confidence.

2020 Toyota Camry Engine and Performance

8.0/10

Powering the 2020 Camry is the familiar naturally aspirated duo which is as effortless as always. The refined and energetic inline-4 never feels short of power and its 203 horses feel quite adequate. However, its the 3.5 liter V6 engine churning 301 horses that adds some extra vigour into the Camry.

2020 Toyota Camry Engine Bay

No sports car like crackle or fury though, but the V6’s additional power does make a palpable difference. The plentiful torque and strong mid range of the V6, makes the Camry quicker off the line and happier in highway passings. There is absolutely no disruption of power and the engine is very steady in its power delivery, just how a naturally aspirated engine should be.

Both the engines come mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission that is hassle-free in its business and is tuned for relaxed cruising and efficiency. The shifts are smooth and gears are held longer.

The only setback with the gearbox is that its a bit hesitant in downshifts. Rest assured, it does its job fairly well, but is not as finely tuned as the Mazda 6’s 6-speed auto, which shifts quicker and smoother.

2020 Toyota Camry 0-60 and Quarter Mile Times

With skillfully tweaked dynamics, the current generation Camry is surely the most driveable it has ever been. However, that doesnt mean its taking off its laid-back executive composure by any means.

With the V6, the Camry feels fairly spirited too.

Push it harder on freeways and the 2020 Toyota Camry races from 0-60 mph in an appreciable 7.3 seconds. With the optional V6 engine, it accomplishes the same task in just 5.8 seconds.

Its the enhanced aerodynamics and finely tuned mechanics brought along with its eighth generation, that adds a lot more eagerness into the Camry's character. Impressively, it falls just 0.2 seconds shorter to the lighter Honda Accord, which is the quickest among the competition.

How does it ride and handle?

The eighth-gen Camry is undoubtedly a more pleasing chariot than all of its predecessors. Thanks to the stiffer TNGA architecture and retuned suspension set-up that reward it with better dynamics and agility. Potholes are now tackled effortlessly while ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride, as always.

The nicely balanced steering wheel is more direct than ever and hides its heft quite decently. However, dont expect a Honda Accord or Mazda 6 like precision and liveliness. Throw it around corners and the audible enough body-roll instantly reminds you of its proportions. The available sport mode and paddle shifters are neither required for a vehicle of this temperament nor do they bring any difference.

The optional AWD adds to the Camry's handling and stability

The optional AWD for the 2020 Camry has been borrowed from the RAV4 and is only available with the inline-4 models. No wild intentions but the AWD system helps it negotiate better with slippery surfaces. The traction enhancing hardware does account for some added weight, but the extra mass is barely noticeable.

In-fact the AWD system adds enhanced enthusiasm in to the Camry's driveability. The AWD Camry feels swifter than the FWD models and tackles snowy surfaces with minimal slippage. The system also enhances the handling with lesser understeer and better control around corners.

How precise and efficient are the brakes?

Braking down the 2020 Toyota Camry’s momentum is a pair of ventilated discs at the front and solids at the rear. Emergency Braking Assist and 4-wheel ABS are also deployed on the braking duty.

4-wheel discs along with ABS are part of standard braking equipment

On heavy applications there is a marked nose-dive, but the brake pedal is easy to mudulate and is nor too squishy neither too firm. 60-0 comes up in just 118 feet which is fair enough for its class.

Among its segment, the Camry lags only behind the Nissan Altima in terms of braking. Even with smaller discs, the latter's lighter body helps it halt from 60 mph to 0 in a marginally better 116 feet.

2020 Toyota Camry Fuel Economy

8.0/10

One of the strong attributes that the Toyota Camry is known for is its promising efficiency. Thankfully though, it does not miss out on its traditional virtues even after its heavy revisions in 2018. Despite the bumped up engine, the new Camry is surprisingly more efficient than its predecessors. The 2020 Camry offers 28, 39 and 32 mpg in city, highway and combined respectively which is 5 mpg beter than its previous generation.

2020 Toyota Camry Interior

8.3/10

With the 2018 redesign, the Toyota Camry added even more serenity to its already rich interiors and the 2020 model follows suit. With a clean two-tone layout, wrapped in soft-touch materials on most of the contact surfaces, the cabin looks more pleasing than ever.

A "Y" shaped dashboard along with gloss black, wooden and silver accents further amplify the premiumness inside. The elegant and stylish new interior theme now more closely resembles a Lexus ES, which actually shares most of the Camry's components.

The clean interior layout is soaked in premium materials

Apart from an enhanced interior vibe, the Camry now also offers better outward visibility. Thanks to the larger windshield and thinner pillars. The available two-pane panoramic sunroof further enhances the airiness inside. The stretched proportions over the previous generation, also make it more generous in terms of interior space. Though, not as much as the Honda Accord or Subaru Legacy.

Although the reworked dimensions don't aid its leg-room, but help the Camry with ample head-room at both the benches. Thanks to the lowered seats that compensate for its lowered roofline. The lower trims get manual seat adjustments and cloth upholstery and offer good support on long journeys.

The seating arrangement is fine with good all around space

Higher models open up heated 8-way power front seats and leather upholstery which feels good to touch, but is not the best in the segment. The first row seats are very comfortable with good all-around room for adults, but disappointingly, the rear-seat legroom is not as good as its rivals.

  • Heated, electric power steering
  • Keyless ignition

How good is the infotainment system?

The 2020 Toyota Camry gets the same 7.0 inch touchscreen infotainment system in lower models and 8.0 inch in the higher ones. New for this year is Android Auto, which finally gets a place in the standard feature list. The glare-free touchscreen infotainment screen is sharp enough and has decent graphics with neatly laid out icons. The system's clean user interface and quick responses make it quite intuitive to use.

The sharp infotainment screen offers good feedback and is easy to use

The eighth generation Camry introduced in 2018 did roll out with an extensive feature list which surprisingly had no Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Addressing the grouse, Apple Carplay was added in 2019 and now with Android Auto, the 2020 Toyota Camry offers a complete suite of connectivity features. Some of its infotainment and other associated features are listed below.

What are the available Infotainment and connectivity features?

  • 8.0 Inch touchscreen infotainment
  • Apple Carplay and Android Auto
  • Amazon Alexa integration and Google voice assistant
  • Satellite radio
  • 9 speaker JBL premium audio
  • Integrated navigation system
  • Audio and cruise controls on steering wheel
  • Siri Eyes Free
  • Bluetooth and USB connectivity

How generous is the Cargo Space?

The Toyota Camry has always been among those conservative executive sedans that focus heavily upon space and comfort. That being said, the higher concentration of its length around its hood and body, doesn't leave much space at its tail, which stays true even today.

Sadly though, the 2020 Toyota Camry's 15.1 cu-ft of cargo space is certainly on the average side, but is fairly liveable with all its composition. Thankfully, it does get a split-folding rear seatback to open up more room at the back, if needed.

2020 Toyota Camry Exterior

8.1/10

While the Camry had been always hailed for its plush interiors, things were not quite the same for its uninspiring exterior silhouette. However, in its eighth generation, the grouse was addressed pretty efficiently. The reworked popular sedan debunked it's boring and uninviting attributes with a sleek and aggressive outfit.

With a stretched wheelbase, lowered body and stronger creases, it now wears a far more attractive attire than all of its previous iterations. Since 2018, the style sheet has been carried over to the successive model years and thankfully, the 2020 Toyota Camry adorns the same elegant yet stylish outfit without any change.

The highlight of the 2020 Camry's exterior is off-course the lowered and massively large grille at the front that gives it an imposing face. The redesigned front LED headlights look up-to-date and stylish while the slim wrap-around tail lamps keep things simpler at the rear. But that's not all. The muscular bodylines on the sides, couple beautifully with the lowered roofline for a sleek yet aggressive presentation.

The muscular creases and lower roofline make the Camry look sleek and stylish

The 18 inch alloy rims standard on the higher trims, only further its bold and mature stance. Interestingly though, you also get to choose from two available exterior styling options according to your taste. Either get the gentle 'LE' models or the sportier 'SE' ones that have a meaner grill, contrasting roof, quad exhausts and even a lip spoiler.

Unlike the sharp and very modern exterior approach of its rivals, the Camry restricts to its traditional norms. A concentration of classy styling and a mature road presence has always been its signature. Exterior styling might be subjective, but the Camry certainty looks the most "executive" sedan in its segment.

Ther Toyota Camry has always put forth a benchmark of safety and reliability among its segment. With the 2018 updates, the popular Jap took the safety quotient even higher with the new stiffer TNGA architecture. Not only this, the thorough revision also brought on-board some state-of-the art safety gizmos as well. Its report card with top grades from safety authorities has been a testimony of its safety concerns, even today. The 2020 Toyota Camry is IIHS' Top Safety Pick+ and NHTSA's 5-Star club member.

Thanks to its abundant safety features that now couple with a rigid architecture to ensure utmost soundness of its occupants. Even the base model gets a multitude of standard safety gadgetry. If all that package is still not impressive enough you can go ahead shopping from its list of optional necessities. Some of the notable safety equipment of the 2020 Toyota Camry are listed below.

  • 10 Airbags
  • Rear door child safety locks

2020 Toyota Camry Competition

Toyota Camry vs Honda Accord

The Camry's archrival Honda Accord is as nicely built as the Camry, has a stylish and sporty silhouette and is lighter than the former as well. It is also quicker, more efficient and also has better brakes.

2020 Honda Accord

Compared to the Camry’s traditional interiors, the Accord gets an updated interior layout, offers better leg-room and best-in class cargo area as well. The Accord is also more nimble and fun to drive.

Where the Camry overtakes its fellow countryman is with its strong road presence, more comfortable ride, better rear seat headroom and off-course the added traction aided by its new AWD system.

Toyota Camry vs Nissan Altima

The stylish Nissan Altima is marginally ahead of the Camry with its more rich feature list and efficient powertrains. Most importantly, it is one of the few full size family sedans that has an optional AWD.

2020 Nissan Altima

While the Camry is preferably a chauffeur driven car, the Altima offers great athleticism and enthusiasm behind the wheels. It is also slightly better in terms of cargo space as well as braking performance.

However, the Camry outshines the Altima with its rich interiors, better interior room, comfortable ride quality, elegant presence and incredible reliability. The Camry is also quicker off the line than the Altima.

Toyota camry vs Mazda 6

The Mazda 6 might not be the best in one specific area, but it presents an incredible blend of several elements together. It looks very gentle, has a class-above interior and is loaded with gizmos as well.

2020 Mazda 6 Sedan

It might not be the most powerful in the league, but its efficient weight distribution, nicely tuned suspension, slick transmission and very talkative steering, make it the drivers-favorite among its class.

On the other hand, the Camry turns out to be quicker, efficient, comfortable, roomy and more utilitarian than the Mazda 6. The Camry's AWD system also gives it an added advantage over the Mazda.

Toyota Camry vs Subaru Legacy

The Subaru Legacy is one sedan in its class that has been serving AWD since the longest time now. It was Subaru’s steady fan base that mulled other manufacturers to get on-board the AWD carriage.

2020 Subaru Legacy

It might not have the ‘estately’ looks of its rivals, but it looks athletic and robust though. Sadly though, Subaru's legendary AWD doesn't make its ride quality as competitive as some of its rivals.

With the new Legacy, Subaru did push itself as hard as it could, but the Legacy is still miles behind its rivals. In comparison, the Toyota Camry is miles ahead of the Legacy in almost every department.

2020 Toyota Camry Final Verdict

The Toyota Camry should definitely be on your wishlist if you are looking to upgrade to a mid-size family sedan. It checks all your "desired" boxes in a way that no other car in its segment does. It looks premium and classy, is easy to maintain, is comfortable and has a premium interior, has solid safety and reliability, gets all the latest bells and whistles and keeps a check on your gas expenses as well. What else do you need? Most importantly it does all the good things without a heavy asking price.
