Even while being an all-new car, the 2022 Toyota 86 will continue on the tradition of offering a thrilling and fun experience in a compact sports car package. The 2022 model year is expected to start at around an MSRP of $30,000 and it will feature the new 2.4-liter horizontally opposed engine under the hood producing around 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. A turbocharged unit is also rumored to be underworked and will be more performance-focused. However, even with the new engine, it will still be a rear-wheel-drive car, just like the first version of the 86. Also, just like before the 2022 Toyota 86 will give the Subaru BRZ and the Nissan 370Z a compelling fight.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The Toyota 86 has always been known for its naturally-aspirated boxer engine and rear-wheel-drive system which has worked in a near-perfect tandem to make it a fun-to-drive car. Thus, it remains to be seen how much Toyota will be sticking on to its true DNA with the 2022 model year of the 86. A standard six-speed manual transmission is expected to be offered as standard as the car has been quite popular amongst automotive enthusiasts. While not much exact information is available currently, we expect the 2022 Toyota 86 to be revealed around the end of the 2021 calendar year.

2022 Toyota 86 Pricing and Features

Just like before, the 2022 Toyota 86 will be offered in 3 trim options namely, Base, GT, and Hakone Edition. The prices will certainly see an increase but Toyota is expected to price the car competitively. Also, like before, the Basic and GT will be its mainstay, and the Hakone Edition will be all about the aesthetic upgrade. You would have to shell out about $1,200 for the automatic transmission.

2022 Toyota 86 Coupe Buying Advice

We would recommend you to go for the “GT trim” as it adds a lot of advanced convenience and safety features over the Base trim. It adds features such as heated front seats, keyless entry, and automatic climate control.

2022 Toyota 86 Engine and Performance

The Toyota 86 has always been impressive when it comes to power and performance. The lightweight sports car with its peppy 2.4L engine has been exciting to drive and loved by many. Most people do wish for a turbocharged version of the 86 but that seems unlikely to fit into the lineup of new cars that Toyota is planning to launch. Even without the turbocharger, the 86 packs enough power to get to 0 to 60 in under 7 seconds.

The 2022 Toyota GT 86 and its twin, the Subaru BRZ is lagging behind the Nissan 370Z when it comes to raw power. The engine of the 2022 Toyota 86 wil also be jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru. Due to this partnership, we can see a lot of similarities in performance between the two cars. Both cars have a higher top speed at 143 mph and also costs more.

2022 Toyota 86 Fuel Economy

The 2022 Toyota 86 is expected to receive a slight improvement with its 2022 model year. The current Toyota 86 gives 25 MPG for city driving and 32 MPG when you are on the highway. The combined 27 MPG is far better than what the competitors are offering. Thus, the 2022 model year will continue to offer a better fuel economy figure than its rivals.

The Toyota 86 has a 13.2-gallon tank which is roughly the same as the Subaru. Nissan 370Z has a bigger 19-gallon capacity but offers less MPG when compared to Toyota and Subaru.

2022 Toyota 86 Interior

The 2022 Toyota 86 Coupe interior styling is adequate for a compact sports car. The leather-trimmed tilt/telescopic steering wheel with contrast stitching keeps up with the mood that the car stands for. The buttons on the steering wheel are minimal and simple. Toyota 86 comes with dual-zone automatic climate control and sport front bucket seats as standard.

Even though there are four seats, the rear seats are cramped and cannot be used by adults. The trunk is sufficiently bigger and the rear seats can be folded to make more room. For a sports coupe, the Toyota 86 offers practicality and convenience for an everyday drive.

2022 Toyota 86 Exterior

The 2022 Toyota 86 Coupe will retain its compact sports car looks enhanced by the LED headlights, extended fenders, and 18-in. split-spoke alloy wheels. It keeps up with the evolving design principles and is focused more on enthusiasts. It can sure hold its weight in the entry-level sports coupe segment. Toyota has resorted to a minimalist approach to avoiding unnecessary additions and styling elements.

2022 Toyota 86 Competition

Toyota 86 Coupe Vs Subaru BRZ

It's hard to choose between these two cars as they are essentially the same. There are only minimal visual differences in the front end. However, the Toyota 86 is cheaper than the Subaru BRZ but the BRZ offers a more premium interior. Choosing between the two will all be about which brand you want to go with.

Subaru BRZ

Toyota 86 Vs Honda Civic Coupe

The Honda Civic is one of the most popular cars in its class and it is not difficult to see why. It is reliable as well as fun to drive. Not just that, it offers a spacious cabin along with tones of features. In comparison, the Toyota 86 lacks in terms of space but offers more grunt under its hood. The Civic feels more value for money car than the 86 coupe but it is certainly not a better performing car.

2022 Toyota 86 Final Verdict

The 2022 Toyota 86 Coupe is likely to launch by late-2021 but no official information is available about the launch yet. With the competition in the segment becoming more intense, Toyota plans to increase its market share with increased performance and adding more features. Toyota 86 is a driver's car, with a starting MSRP of $30,000, it is ideal for someone who loves track days but doesn't necessarily want a costly sports car. In modern cars, where the computer takes away a part of your fun, the Toyota 86 still preserves the playfulness and excitement of old-time sports cars.

The enthusiasts choice.

Pros - Close ratio gearbox, sporty seats, competitively priced

Cons - Interior room,

For those who yearn real driving pleasure. An absolutely wonderful sportscar with the ever so powerful little engine driving the rear wheels through a six speed close ratio gearbox culminating into one of the best entry level sports car driving experience ever. The interior suits the purpose and is more focused for the raw drive feel than comfort. Looks sporty with all the added bling, big wheels and rear spoiler. Its a Toyota with a Subaru derived heart definilty reliable. The easiest transactions I've ever made. I felt that the price on my new vehicle was good. I had not made any decision to buy from them but after seeing their inventory, I am impressive and went on

Toyota 86

Pros - Cost to own, good driving dynamics, manual transmission

Cons - Underpowered

Needs POWER! In my experience so far 86 feels underpowered. And not only that but I have realized that it is not the best when it comes to snow. I learned my lesson the hard way. Don’t repeat the same mistake as me and avoid snow! The interior is pretty decent though. It has one of the best infotainment systems I have ever used. It is quick, the screen is bright and overall it is very interactive to use. Not bad. Although the salesperson was not completely honest to me, I still count it as a good overall experience
