Tesla has introduced a new range-topping 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid variant which sits atop the 2021 Model S lineup. The 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid will be a significant improvement over the standard models in terms of performance as well as range. The 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid is claimed to offer the class-leading 520 miles of range. If you look closely, this is 3 extra miles over Lucid Air's 517 miles of the claimed range.

The range is not the only exciting aspect of the 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid. The new Model S Plaid will have a whopping 1100 hp which will allow this electric sedan to gush from 0 - 60 mph in just under 2 seconds along with a top speed of 200 mph. The 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid will roll out in late 2021 and will come at a starting price of $139,990. For the record, the Model S Plaid is quite expensive as compared to the standard Tesla Model S's price which starts off from $69,420. However, the Tesla Model S Plaid will also be eligible for the $1,500 California Clean Fuel Reward and gas savings of $5,500.

Though not much of the details are out about the interiors or features of the 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid, yet we expect it to be very much similar to the standard Model S, with just an extra touch of oomph, justifying the price tag. Yet, Model S Plaid will be a major upgrade in terms of the mechanical department especially with the electric motors and battery pack. Also, we should mention that Tesla is now making the batteries in-house which gives them the advantage of increased power and a 16 percent better range compared to the earlier Panasonic sourced battery packs.

There are no direct rivals to the 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid except for the Lucid Air. But considering its price and the other competitive electric sedans in the segment, we do not have so many options. The potential rivals of the Model S Plaid include the likes of the very obvious Lucid Air Dream Edition and the Porsche Taycan Turbo

2021 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Pricing and Features

9.0/10

We expect the 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid to be very similar to the existing Model S. Starting with the dimensions to the standard equipment everything will be similar as this is not a major overhaul. The 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid is expected to cost at around $139,990 which is really expensive compared to the base Model S. But it still undercuts the high power output model of the Lucid Air and is almost identical in pricing with the Dream Edition model of the Lucid Air which is really impressive.

The features list has not yet been revealed by Tesla and the things we know about the 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid are very sparse. In fact, what we know as of now is that it has three electric motors with an all-wheel-drive configuration, a power output of 1100 hp, and a range of 520 miles. We will know more about the Model S Plaid in detail when it launches somewhere in late 2021. So yes, the wait is long which means the features mentioned here and throughout the article are mostly speculations of what we could have with the 2021 model when we see it on our roads.

2021 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Buying Advice

The Plaid model is all-new for 2021 and will come in only one trim which has three electric motors with a combined 1100 hp power output and a range of 520 miles. The 2021 Model S Plaid is now available for pre-order on Tesla's website for a cost of about $139,990 with an expected late 2021 delivery.

2021 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Engine and Performance

8.0/10

With the 2021 Model S Plaid, Tesla has gone all out and has made a beast of a machine. The 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid has three electric motors that puts1100 hp along with a claimed range of 520 miles. Of course, it is an all-wheel-drive car and the transmission duties are held with the help of a 1 - speed Direct Shift transmission.

The 2021 Tesla Model S has a motor for each axle, hence an all-wheel-drive vehicle. The third motor has many advantages and it's not just more horsepower. Torque vectoring is one such advantage, which is the ability to control what wheels on opposites sides of the car are doing provides for some fascinating handling athleticism.

That number 1100 hp is hypercar territory and it is not just the highest in the segment but also among most production cars. The only electric sedan to come close is the Lucid Air Dream Edition which has 1080 hp but is rather expensive at $169,00 and also compromises on the range. The Porsche Taycan Turbo's 671 hp motor lags quite behind these hypercar territory rivals.

We do not have the official acceleration figures for the 2021 Model S Plaid yet but Tesla has said that the 2021 Model S Plaid will just take less than 2 seconds to reach 60 mph from a standstill. That is absolutely bonkers and puts it right in the sights of some exotic hypercars.

Tesla claims that the Model S Plaid takes under 9 seconds to finish the quarter-mile and tops out with a top speed of 200 mph. The Porsche Taycan Turbo dominated the acceleration figures from its launch but now falls quite back compared with the Model S Plaid. The Taycan Turbo takes 2.4 seconds and 10.5 seconds to complete the 0-60 mph sprint and quarter-mile respectively which is insanely fast yet not as fast as the claimed accelerating number of the Model S Plaid.

2021 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Fuel Economy

9.4/10

Tesla is now back at being the electric sedan with the longest range in the segment with a whopping 520 miles on a single charge. Other details like battery pack size and charging time have not yet been revealed by Tesla but we will update you with it once we are near the launch of the Model S Plaid which is scheduled for late 2021. This 520 miles is a huge improvement over the previous best 402 miles that came with the entry-level Model S Long Range Plus which costs $65,000.

The Lucid Air Grand Touring which was launched a few weeks back had the best range at 517 miles with an almost identical price at $139,000. But now, the Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan beats it by 3 miles with a claimed range of 520 miles which is now the best in the segment.

2021 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Interior

9.0/10

There is no news about any changes to the interiors in comparison to the standard 2021 Tesla Model S yet, but Tesla will probably look into making the interiors as extreme as the car really is. But for the sake of reference, you can stay assured that the interiors of the car will be roomy.

Tesla's interior was always futuristic and functional in terms of design. The design is very simple as Tesla has kept it clean and organized with the Model S. However, we expect the 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid's interior to be complemented by a horizontal-orientation infotainment screen and an aircraft-style steering wheel, just like the interiors of the 2021 Tesla Model S

Though the large touchscreen infotainment system looks cool and futuristic, we still would have liked some physical buttons for volume control and temperature adjustment for which now you need to guide your way through some options. Other than that, the Model S Plaid has one of the most spacious and comfortable interiors in the segment with lots of space on the interiors and comfort features. The only true competitor to the 2021 Model S Plaid in terms of interior space and comfort is the Lucid Air which can also trump the Model S with its luxurious interiors. The Porsche Taycan Turbo's interior on the other hand emphasizes the performance factor, complementing the sedan's character.

Technology is where Tesla is simply unbeatable and the large 17.0-inch horizontally oriented touchscreen infotainment system is the perfect giveaway of that fact. It is loaded with lots of features along with some quirky ones to have fun with your friends and family. The features include wireless smartphone charging, Internet, Bluetooth connectivity, 14 speakers audio system, Netflix, YouTube, Wi-Fi hotspot, and 4 USB ports.

2021 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Exterior

8.0/10

As said earlier, the exterior design of the 2021 Model S Plaid is only speculation yet. On Tesla's website where the 2021 Model S is available for pre-order, we have a Model S in the configurator which looks almost identical to the existing one. But in a prototype testing video that was available on social media had some visible design tweaks. These include a fairly large rear spoiler, wider fenders, along a steering wheel from the Model 3 & Model Y.

We hope and also expect that Tesla sticks to the Model S in the prototype video which has some changes instead of going with the existing one featured in the Tesla configurator. This is important because people who pay such a premium for the high-performance plaid model would definitely like to differentiate their Model S from the mere base Model S, which is still fast.

The rivals all have their unique design in the segment which is a good thing. The Porsche Taycan Turbo looks like any Porsche which means it is iconic and legendary. Whereas, Lucid Air has one of the most unique designs in the segment and the automotive industry for a while now. The Model S Plaid though we expect some changes, still will have the same structure as the previous-generation models which mean a conventional sedan design and lacks the excitement of the Lucid Air.

2021 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Safety

8.0/10

As expected, the Model S scores a 5-star rating in the NHTSA crash tests. Some of the features include the likes of lane departure warning, lane keep assist, electronic stability control, blind-spot monitoring, automated emergency braking, and Tesla Autopilot system.

Tesla has been at the forefront of technology and safety for quite a long time now. It is Tesla's that brought the state of the art Autopilot system which gave people the comfort of autonomous driving right at their fingertips. Tesla will further take things up a notch considering the amount of money the car will cost and the speeds it can achieve. The list of safety tech of the Model S Plaid is yet to be disclosed by Tesla. But the standard Model S already comes with features likes:

Some of the most prominent safety features that are expected in the 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid are:

  • PIN to Drive
  • Sentry Mode
  • Tesla Autopilot
  • Attention Assist
  • Active Blindspot Assits
  • Radar Cruise Control
  • Required Manual Entry

2021 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Competition

2021 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Electric Vs 2021 Lucid Air Dream Edition

The toughest rival to all the conquering Tesla Model S and the one which also took the crown back from Tesla for being the longest range EV is the Lucid Air. It was not just the power and range in which the Lucid AIr excels as it also has one of the best luxurious interiors and ride comfort.

2021 Lucid Air Grand Touring Electric Sedan

It is definitely a step up from the Model S in terms of sheer comfort and luxury. The Lucid Air is also faster to charge with a longer range in shorter charging times but lacks Tesla's Supercharger network.

2021 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Electric Vs 2021 Porsche Taycan Turbo

If it is the performance that we are talking about, then we can not forget about the Porsche Taycan Turbo. Porsche's intentions when making the Taycan were very clear. They wanted to create a fast EV that is both fun to drive and has all of Porsche's qualities intact.

2021 Porsche Taycan Turbo

Though the Taycan got the better of the standard Model S, the 2021 Model S Plaid sedan easily beats the Taycan Turbo with its mouth-watering power and range numbers. But still, it is the Taycan which is the more fun to drive sedan whereas the Model S qualifies as a comfortable all-round practical family sedan.

2021 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Final Verdict

The Tesla Model S is such an important car for both the automotive industry and Tesla. Tesla instead of upgrading the Model S each year brings substantial updates year over year. This time with the Model S Plaid Sedan, Tesla has upped the power output and range compared to the base model.

Unlike the older Tesla models which have dual motors, we have three motors with an all-wheel-drive setup in the 2021 Model S Plaid Sedan Electric. There is a lot more to come in the future and we sure are excited for the same. Until then, the 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid is the best in the business and takes its crown back from Lucid Air for being the most powerful along with the longest range on offer.
