2021 Tesla Model S electric Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: October 15, 2020

The vision of an electric future is something we all are eagerly waiting for. Steadily marching forward in the pursuit of the dream is Tesla. Tesla continues to make waves with its electric cars. In recent years, they have released their budget SUV, the Model Y, which is modeled after their extremely popular budget Sedan, Model 3. With these two, Tesla has entered into more homes than any other electric car manufacturer. They have also been the talk of the town for the daring design of their yet to be launched pickup truck, the Cybertruck.

However, the car which gained Tesla its reputation is the one which started it all, the Model S. The Model S is Tesla’s premium sedan which has set the pace for all-electric vehicles since it was first launched. The 2021 Tesla Model S comes in two trims costing $66,490 for the 'Long Range' and $86,490 for the 'Performance'.

For a very long time, the Model S ran without a legitimate competitor. However, that all changed with the launch of the Porsche Taycan. However, the new 2021 Tesla Model S has a lot to offer. The prices have been slashed down for the icon and the new Tesla Model S now comes with a base price of $66,490. For the people, who like a more aggressive drive, Tesla has also announced a 1,100 hp Plaid version, which is expected to go on sale in the late year 2021.

The 2021 Tesla Model S is the main rival to the likes of Porsche Taycan, which is a pricier alternative for the Model S. Let's find out how the new 2021 Tesla Model S is strategically priced and positioned in the U.S.

2021 Tesla Model S electric Features

9.0/10

Tesla does upgrade their cars like any other brand. They don't follow the generation system. In fact, Tesla keeps making both minor and major changes year-round. The 2021 Tesla Model S will be offered in two trims, the Long Range and the Performance. However, the company has also announced a more poised and aggressive Plaid version, which will have 1,100 hp at its disposal.

The 2021 Tesla Model S comes loaded with a long list of features, wrapped inside a very minimalistic and modern interior layout. You still get all the modern luxury tech like heated seats, heated steering wheel, and the Tesla's all famous AutoPilot is also offered as standard. The 2021 Tesla Model S will set you back about $66,490 for the 'Long Range' and $86,490 for the 'Performance' version.

The Performance steps in at $86,490 and is just the opposite. Higher top speed and quicker acceleration, but with a lower overall range. It can reach speeds of up to 163 mph and does 0-60 in just 2.3 seconds, but has a range of around 348 miles.

2021 Tesla Model S electric Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Cars from Tesla prove to be some of the most reliable cars out there. Both its motors and batteries have a really long life. However, getting your Tesla repaired can take a longer time than any other conventional car, it more than makes up for it by giving unimaginable convenience in day to day life.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

Teslas are some of the only cars which can add both features and performance via “over the air” software updates. This really helps maintain a long term freshness in the cars it makes.

The 2020 Model S has not been recalled yet due to any issues, neither was the 2019 model. However, Model S in particular has been recalled before for issues in the parking brake and a rear seat. Both issues were promptly diagnosed and fixed with the utmost professionalism and did not reoccur.

It is also worth noticing, that, despite the sheer volume of tech and innovative features the Model S carries, it has never been recalled due to any failure pertaining to them.

2021 Tesla Model S Warranty

The warranty covers-

  • Model S and Model S – 8 years (with the exception of the original 60 kWh battery manufactured before 2015, which is covered for a period of 8 years or 125,000 miles, whichever comes first).
  • These warranties cover the repair or replacement necessary to correct defects in the materials or workmanship of any parts manufactured or supplied by Tesla, which occur under normal use.

For such a high-value car, the Tesla Model sure does have a very impressive and generous warranty. There have been plenty of instances where one of the systems on-board a Tesla failed and the company replaced it for free.

Miles per Dollar

Both the trims of the Tesla Model S have different ranges but share the same battery. They both have a 100 kWh battery. The Long Range variant has a range of 402 miles, which makes each mile cost 2.98 cents. By this measure, the Long Range trim can travel 33.55 miles for a dollar. The Performance variant has a lower range, 348 miles, which makes each mile cost 3.44 cents, making it capable to travel 29 miles for a dollar.

2021 Tesla Model S electric Buying Advice

We recommend opting for the Performance trim. Now we know that the base Long Range trim has most of all the features and costs less, but in our opinion, the bump in performance you get with the Performance trim makes the higher price worth it. Along with higher top speed and quicker acceleration, the Performance trim also offers slight interior updates and a carbon fiber spoiler.

Is buying a used Tesla Model S worth it?

Not everyone is looking to buy a new vehicle. Some people rightly believe that a used car can provide a better value for their money. Knowing that Teslas lose most of their value in the first couple of years, we would say opting for a used Model S is quite a beneficial idea.

Tesla themselves facilitates the resale of used Tesla cars. In fact, every used Tesla car offered by them has undergone a 70 point inspection and offers additional warranties.

2021 Tesla Model S electric Engine and Performance

8.9/10

The incredible performance of the 2021 Tesla Model S is all based on its 2 motors which can be found one on each axle. The rear motor is the same old induction motor. However, the front motor is a new permanent magnet motor. Together, these two motors give the Model S the best of both worlds, better performance as well as range. The electric motors provide insane power delivery. A single-speed direct-drive means all that power goes directly to the wheels.

The immediacy of power is what makes the EV's of modern-day such desirable performance machines. The new 2021 Tesla Model S also goes on a diet and gets some new lightweight and aerodynamic wheels, and an improved regenerative braking system, which in turn increases the efficiency of the powertrain.

While the Porsche Taycan costs more than the Model S, it makes much substantially less power. Although that power difference might not translate into any real-world difference, it sure does hurt the Taycan reputation as a Porsche, it makes less power than a Tesla. Unlike the Model S however, the Taycan is equipped with a 2-speed transmission in the rear, which helps it modulate the power and hereby boosts its performance.

2021 Tesla Model S Acceleration and Braking

The Model S had set unprecedented performance standards for electric vehicles when it first came out. Even today, it delivers the same level of performance and excitement. The 2021 Tesla Model S 'Long Range' is capable of crossing the 60 MPH marker from a standstill in a mere 3.7 seconds. The Model S 'Performance' on the other hand can do the same in an awe-inspiring 2.3 seconds.

2021 Tesla Model S Performance can accelerate 0-60 MPH in 2.3 sec

And with the Model S, it is not just about being fast in a straight line. The 2021 Tesla Model S can also come to a complete halt from 60 MPH in just 113 feet, which is none less than amazing. The regenerative braking of the 2021 Tesla Model S has also been upgraded, which gives it even more efficiency.

The Model S takes the podium here. Both in acceleration and braking, the Model S is better. However, the Taycan does have a higher top speed. Also, the difference in acceleration and braking performance is well within the margin of error, and might not have a noticeable real-life difference.

2021 Tesla Model S Handling

A low center of gravity coupled with sharp steering and excellent suspensions makes the Model S have a driving experience that is smooth and reliable. It stays planted in a quick turn as well as on a straight. The lightweight treatment for the 2021 Tesla Model S also gives it a more aggressive and precise performance

Its adaptive air suspension is not only capable of giving the 2021 Tesla Model S, 3 inches of extra ground clearance when necessary, but also is excellent in handling body roll during spirited turns. The new Model S absorbs the road abnormalities with utter ease and provokes a lot of confidence when pushing it hard.

The 2021 Tesla Model S looks just as charismatic on the outside as it is powerful on the inside. The curvy yet angular front, the LED DRLs, and the sharp contour lines make the Model S look quite attractive. The new  Model S also went through a weight reduction while still maintaining the same aesthetics. The Model S has not gone through any major exterior updates since its introduction but it still looks modern and elegant.

The addition of a Carbon fiber spoiler on the 2021 Tesla Model S Performance variant is subtle enough to blend into the design but will catch everyone’s eye. With its distinctive hatchback design and a set of new lightweight and aerodynamic wheels, the new Model S looks even more intriguing. The lack of a conventional combustion engine also gives the Model S a practical edge as well.

2021 Tesla Model S vs Porsche Taycan

With the launch of the Taycan in 2020, the Model S finally has a worthy competitor. However, even when the Model S was in the market without any real competition, it never slacked off. Even after the Taycan’s launch, the comparison shows the clear advantage the Model S has.

Porsche Taycan

It is lighter, faster, quicker, and has more range. The Porsche, however, will nudge Tesla to step up their interior game. Taycan’s majestic interiors look spectacular compared to the Model S’s, which some people have chosen to call a little too simplified.

2021 Tesla Model S electric Final Verdict

The new 2021 Tesla Model S is the epitome of electric cars. While cars like the Taycan are much more expensive, the Model S provides breathtaking performance, looks, and features at nearly half the price. Tesla’s success over the years was only possible with the Model S setting such a good example, which it will continue to do in 2021.
