The Goodwood stable’s largest and largesse version of the showroom model is the Phantom. The Rolls-Royce Phantom has marked its eighth generation. Rolls-Royce Phantom is a bespoke craft with attention-to-detail. The amalgamation of modern technology with the traditional and ever-evolving luxury sets some high standards. The Bentley examples are also plush and super luxurious but fall short on the exclusive Rolls-Royce comfort. The Mercedes Maybach S650 is yet another example of a large luxury sedan but with a different focus.

No two Phantoms are ever the same, creating a unique legacy with each example. The originality with the level of personalization is what sets apart the Rolls-Royce Phantom than the others. The Phantom sanctuary house a suite of exclusive luxury features for a starting price of $450,000, which is just the starting.

The Rolls-Royce “Architecture of Luxury” platform uses an aluminum spaceframe which is also part of Cullinan. The fully bespoke interiors and personalized models, each Phantom is distinct. The Phantom is a rear-wheel-drive only and comes equipped with a twin-turbocharged 6.75-liter V12 engine mated to a 8-speed automatic transmission.

What do we recommend?

The Rolls-Royce Phantom standard edition starting at $450,000 is the right pick as the extended wheelbase utility is unknown. With a wide array of customization options, you can pick among the color, wheels and other optional luxuries as you desire.

2020 Rolls-Royce Phantom Engine and Performance

9.1/10

Rolls-Royce is all about effortless progress, that is the Phantom way. Making 563 hp using a 6.8-liter turbocharged V12, the 2020 Rolls-Royce Phantom carries shows still relies on the same heart. Rightly so, the Rolls-Royce V12 is not just another V12 but a highly refined and smooth power delivery unit. Does this large luxury sedan need all this power? Rolls-Royce Phantom is a large and hefty vehicle and the power it makes helps it glide over the tarmac. The performance may not be athletic but it is fast, keep the foot planted to encounter a seamless flow of power charging the Phantom flat.

The Phantom is insulated heavily to keep things quiet inside, other than the air flowing through the vents nothing is audible. The V12 soothing snarl is out of the picture here. The exhaust looks good but actually it is a facade as they enclose dual silencers within. Unlike the Bentley’s which are meant to be quick and athletic, the Phantom restricts being snappy but is ready to support your cannonball run.

Transmission is 8-speed but almost feels like a one-speed, so seamless. The Phantom can top up at the 6th gear, the 7th and 8th gear are meant for improving the fuel efficiency. The Bentley Flyingspur or the Bentley Mulsanne are both engineered to be more athletic than the Phantom. The Phantom is not a drag stripper but a comfort focussed sedan. Also, the Maybach’s are fast with table-topping power and least priced option relatively.

How fast is the 2020 Rolls-Royce Phantom ?

Generally, Rolls-Royce is meant to be chauffeured, with occupant cosseting on the back seat. Re-writing the rules, take the drive in your hands to witness the supreme prowess of the Phantom. Keep the right foot planted, the Phantom is not something that wallops you but you feel a smooth surge of power. Not a neck-snapping acceleration like a Bentley flying spur which is a drag racer off-the-line. Phantom is almost like a low-level flying car, gliding over the road surface smoothly.

If you wish to be in the rear seats, the Phantom uses self-leveling air suspension to keep the flight flat and body planted with no hint of what’s happening on the outside. The Phantom gets to 60 mph from standstill in just 5.2 seconds. While the Maybach S650 is lighter and powerful, it charges to 60 mph in under 5 seconds. A keynote to remember, these are not just some sports cars but large luxury sedans to keep you pampered.

What about the ride and handling?

The 2020 Rolls-Royce Phantom gets standard self Levelling air suspension with three different settings for it. Also, it gets two cameras in the windscreen to read the road ahead and spot the bumps beforehand. Accordingly, it will slack or stiffen up the suspension as it needs to be, to improve comfort. The suspension soaks up cobbles to keep the occupants in front and rear equally comfortable. Rolls-Royce is all about seating in the back seat and someone chauffeuring you around - rear passengers are as cosseted as in the front.

The 2020 Phantom gets rear-wheel steering to make it more agile considering the huge length. The active anti-roll system helps to stop any leaning and rolling through the bends for a flat and planted ride. The steering is feather-light which can be controlled via index finger only. Effortless driving is its core strength but around the corners, the large turning radius warns to be cautious or else insurance companies will hike the premium. Through motorway and twisty roads, the Phantom will stick to the road despite the huge bulk. In town, it is a little of a mixed experience as handling such a big car through traffic impedes easy maneuverability.

How do the brakes perform on the Phantom?

Higher the curb, higher will be the momentum and bigger rotors will be what you need. Unaware of the brake specs, Phantom exhibit reliable braking performance. Rolls-Royce equips the phantom with the EPS system to ensure the tires don’t lose traction and also maintains a straight line while braking heavily. The cruise control is adaptive to brake automatically in case it finds the Phantom is taking speedy turns or any object is close upfront, to avoid any imminent collision.

The pedal response is linear and feedback instills confidence. Also, the brake pedal uses a sensor to keep the brake fade in check and indicates a warning in case replacement is needed.

2020 Rolls-Royce Phantom Fuel Economy

4.0/10

This is one area where the Rolls-Royce offers a dreaded performance. Nevertheless, does it even matter for someone paying in six figures for this luxury? The V12 is a big-block and seemingly thirsty one. However, keeping things under control the Rolls-Royce uses the top two gears to improve fuel efficiency. The V12 returns 12/20 mpg ratings in the city/highway. The rear-wheel Phantom a costly affair.

To save the frequency and time spent at gas stations, Phantom uses 23.3 gallons of a fuel tank that returns a range of 286/476 miles on the city/highway. The V12 is efficient but the power to drive all that weight requires a lot of fuel. The other large luxury sedan, no matter the roots, performs similarly in this category. The Maybach S650 is slightly better since it is a lighter car.

2020 Rolls-Royce Phantom Interior

9.9/10

The 2020 Phantom opens to a humongous dash, looks like a bridge of a ship. The interior uses gorgeous metals, the finest leather, and even bits of plastic looks premium. The dash houses an old school analog clock, dials are actually digital but are meant to look analog. You get to choose from 20 types of leather, 17 wood options, logos all over, pillows, rear three benches or two benches and even a champagne cooler. The Rolls-Royce offers indefinite luxury options with attention-to-detail at every inch of it. The Phantom doors house a full-size umbrella, available at the press of a button.

Rolls-Royce is all about transporting you in utter tranquility, that’s why the Phantom is fitted with heavy sound insulation. Rear-hinged doors allow easy ingress and egress. Doors are heavy but don’t worry as they are electrically operated from inside as well. The rear offers a decent headroom and good legroom. That pops up a question on the need of an extended version of Phantom. Three can be seated comfortably with a great shoulder room, perfectly spacious. The Phantom backseats are the best, they are unexplainably comfy. The Phantom flys and the available star headliner amplifies the experience to another level. It takes two men and 9 hours to put it and you can have any constellation, while occasionally if you get lucky, you get a shooting star as well.

The 2020 Phanom is luxurious all-round to elevate every sense. Standard floor mats are way plush, aluminum plating everywhere, be it foot air vents, seat-slider, even the speaker in the front is made of aluminum. You can also avail of heated, ventilated seats with massage function, even a footrest for the rear seats. Every Phantom gets an electrically operated, sturdy-feeling picnic table behind the front seats, where you can upgrade to the rear theater system as well.

You can not only operate but also override the infotainment system and satellite navigation through rear controls. The rear is fitted with the largest illuminated vanity mirrors. Present on the side as well, so that you can see your better side.

Well, we have a few annoying interior features as well. Only two ambient lighting options are available while Mercedes offers 64 light options. Also, cheap materials can be found behind the steering wheel like indicators, leaver for a steering wheel, a lever for wiper, basically all the things that the driver touch.

Key interior features

  • Four-zone automatic climate control
  • Wood accents
  • Heated front seats with massage functions
  • Head-up display
  • Illuminated Locking Glove Box
  • Available Starlight headliner

How’s the infotainment like?

Rolls -Royce is BMW owned company, so it comes obvious that it uses a BMW infotainment system which is not at all bad in any way. With Nice and clean graphics, a physical knob controller makes it easy to navigate. When you lock the car, the infotainment screen hides away and as you turn it on, it pops back again, “Welcome to Phantom!” the dashboard hides everything behind a glass cabin (almost like a display cabin) as if it is a showcase of expensive pieces of furniture. The iDrive infotainment system is highly intuitive and can be controlled with front or rear controls. One can also opt for a rear theatre system. Standard is the Bespoke audio system, as is the Android Auto and Apple Carplay compatibility.

Key infotainment features

  • Surround-view camera system
  • 10.3-inch center display screen
  • Navigation system
  • 18-speaker sound system with satellite and HD radio
  • Digital music storage
  • USB ports

Is the Rolls-Royce Phantom practical sedan?

The 2020 Phantom offers an absolutely huge trunk than the allies and rivals. The trunk opening is huge and carpeting in the boot is premium. Rolls-Royce displays practical virtues to its merit. Otherwise, it is irrelevant for the Rolls-Royce and it has never been on the list of the automaker.

The internal storage options are decent upfront. Also, the door bins at the back are a decent size but those in the front are not so much. The liftover height is decent to save your back, in case you carry the cargo all by yourself.

2020 Rolls-Royce Phantom Exterior

9.0/10

The Rolls-Royce design speaks for itself and is very very recognizable. The Phantom uses a lot of shiny chrome for the premium and plush feel. Down the side, it is long, quite long. Actually it is a short version, you can get an extended wheelbase version which is about 25 cm longer. The arrival of the Phantom is marked by an assertive and authoritative attitude. The front features a tough face, thanks to the absolutely imposing Pantheon grille, and a controllable hood ornament - Spirit of ecstasy.

The rear taillights house the turn signals with an imprinted “RR” insignia. The rear-hinged doors have a soft close feature wherein they will automatically close at the push of a button. The door panel also houses the RR branded umbrella. The Phantom has an option of 22” wheels and Two-tone color options. On the exterior, the fuel fill cap and reflectors on the side look horrendous, absolutely cheap.

2020 Rolls-Royce Phantom Safety

9.0/10

he Rolls-Royce uses today’s best technology but keeps only the mundane features like forward-collision or blind-spot detections standard. Rolls-Royce are not bought but commissioned. That means there is a whole lot of customization options to suit your needs. The most enticing safety features that the Phantom uses are the Night vision camera and a 360-degree reversing camera.

A night vision camera uses a front infrared camera placed in the Pantheon grille to guide you through a dark road with the reliability of up to 300 meters. Also, the 360-degree surround view gives a realtime view of the surroundings at the infotainment display, helping in driving this big and bulky car. Also, Phantom uses a satellite aided transmission, making motoring natural and effortless. The adaptive headlights adjust to the ever-changing road conditions, keeping you and road users as safe as possible.

2020 Rolls-Royce Phantom Competition

2020 Rolls-Royce Phantom Vs Bentley Mulsanne

Both the Bentley and Rolls-Royce use a version of a similar engine. The Bentley Mulsanne is a drag-racer off-the-road. The Bentley’s are designed to be aggressive and athletic as compared to the Rolls-Royce which is comfort focussed. The RR uses a BMW iDrive infotainment system which is way more indulging than the Bentley’s that uses an Audi infotainment system. Undoubtedly, the Rolls-Royce Phantom is the definition of the utmost comfort and luxury on offer. The RR luxury is the epitome and a benchmark hard to reach. However, the price points also make a difference as the Bentley’s our way down under the Rolls-Royce price tag.

2020 Rolls-Royce Phantom Vs Mercedes-Benz Maybach S 650

In absolute terms, Mercedes-Benz Maybach is one of its kind but relatively feels like an underdog. The compelling price points of the Maybach S 650 makes it the valuable large luxury sedan. The Maybach is way more powerful than the Rolls-Royce Phantom. However, the absolute luxury of the Rolls-Royce is beyond any comparison and these hand-built saloons are more a legacy and class. The Mercedes-Benz comes equipped with the finest quality materials, future-proof technology, best financial choice.

2020 Rolls-Royce Phantom Final Verdict

The grand old British carmaker, now owned by the German carmaker is still a measure of elegance and excellence. The automaker is known for the exclusive range of the hand-built cars that blend the ultimate in the status and luxury with modern technology. The 2020 Phantom is time-honored and is available in a range of body styles, including a sedan and an extended wheelbase version. Sold through a limited number of dealers, the Phantom can be commissioned with wide array of individual options. However, what we don’t like is the standard feature list looks scarce for the price.
