The pickup truck market is slowly getting more and more traction, with the body type being a favorite in many states all over the country. Manufacturers are turning towards offering more and more powerful alternatives, with an all-new effusion of luxury added to the package. Pickups are much more than just work trucks in the 21st century but are moving towards style statements.

On the platform, 2500 uses the same platform as 1500, which had a heavy update in 2019. The newer build is a more defined and better-spaced look, which offers some serious luxury on top of pulling power. The interiors can be had in spacious and utilitarian builds to high-end leather as needed. The new generation also includes a larger and much better-equipped infotainment and driver’s gauge cluster. The truck now even has some of the best driver-assist features on the market.

The RAM 2500 is now ranked quite above its competitors in the basic amount of features and luxuries it offers in the cabin. Although the towing power remains similar to the last generation. The truck still offers a bit less towing capability than the 1000 lb-ft figure offered on the Ford pickup, while closely competing with the Chevrolet pickup in terms of capability. Although on the basic drivability and ride comfort, the RAM 2500 overcomes its opposition.

When last updated in 2019 for its fifth-generation, the RAM 2500 intensified all of its propositions. Its spacious, tech-laden and also comes with powerful engine options. When it comes to riding and handling, there's no heavy-duty truck that can ride as great as the Ram. It's topped up with ultimate elegance, leaving behind the GMC Sierra and the Chevy Silverado. While the interiors of the truck are filled with a simple and sober design, the rich materials enhance the beauty of it. Besides this, it has been fitted with hi-tech features, driver-assist tech, and a 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

While Ram 2500 offers three cab styles, Regular, Crew, and Mega. And Mega Cab is the biggest one amongst these. It's offering two engine options, a gasoline engine, and one diesel engine. (6.4-liter V8 gasoline engine and 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel engine). The Mega Cab drivetrain is available only in 4 x 4 (all-wheel drive). It's priced between the range of $46,850 and $66,350, and it offers 4 trims that are Big Horn, Laramie, Longhorn, and Limited. 2021 RAM 2500 Mega Cab Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

American trucks are usually a great sensation in the automotive market and are used for commercial purposes. So, it's really not easy to keep them well-maintained. It's not cheap either. The same is the case with the 2021 RAM 2500 Mega Cab; however, it offers a great driving experience with a bombastic performance and engine under its hood and solid hauling capabilities. The best part about the car is, it offers comprehensive consumer satisfaction along with above-average warranty plans and reliability quotient.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

The reliability of the RAM 2500 Mega Cab has always been a little controversial. While some of the users are delighted with the product’s performance, a majority of the users have registered different complaints regarding the hauler's quality and repairs. However, the 2021 RAM 2500 Mega has earned itself a JD Power rating of 81 out of 100. When it comes to the Quality & Reliability part, the truck scored a pretty impressive 84 out of 100. Even with impressive ratings, Ram’s rival trucks have scored better on JD Power grounds on every parameter. The 2021 Ram 2500 Mega Cab might be a bit less than other almighty heavy-duty trucks, especially on the basis of its consumer feedback computation, we can only make an assumption that these trucks might not be most reliable and at the same time, the worst in the market.

On average, the 2020 RAM 2500 Mega Cab would require you to shell out about $68,000-$70,000. People from Washington would be paying a hefty amount for the car, while the people from Arizona would enjoy the lowest cost on the same. To date, the 2021 Ram 2500 Mega Cab has not been subjected to a single safety recall issue, nor has it been addressed with any kind of consumer complaints.

But when we consider the 2020 Ram 2500, the car has been recalled a total of 4 times in total and has been addressed with 13 consumer complaints. Even with good JD Power ratings and proficient on-road performance, the car would make us believe that its reliability quotient is considerably good. Coming to the American truck's own cost and you won't find that cheap at all. Even if you consider the car's repairs and maintenance, everything comes at a hefty price. You have to spend a fortune to keep your truck moving. The RAM 2500 Mega Cab is not any different, and one has to shell out nearly $75,500 to $92,000 in 5 years as their full ownership cost depending upon the trim level you are going for.

Warranty

The 2021 Ram 2500 is offering a standard limited warranty for three years or 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier, on both engine types of the trucks. The powertrain warranty coverage of the RAM 2500 Mega Cab is different from its gas engine to its diesel engine. Besides, the RAM’s gasoline engine offers a powertrain warranty coverage for 60,000 miles while for its diesel engine, the coverage lasts for 100,000 miles and the period remains similar for five years on both. Apart from this, for any type of on-road emergencies, the RAM offers 24-hour roadside assistance for five years or 100,000 miles and also rust through protection for five years or 100,000 miles.

Criteria

Period

Limited warranty

3 years/ 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier

Powertrain warranty

5 years/ 60,000 miles; whichever is earlier

24-hour roadside assistance

5 years/ 100,000 miles; whichever is earlier

It's advisable that the RAM 2500 must consider improving the time period for its powertrain warranty coverage on its gasoline engine. This is because all of its competitors like the Ford F-250, the Chevy Silverado, and the GMC Sierra are delivering great time-coverage for the same. Neither the RAM 2500 nor the Ford F-250 offers any complimentary maintenance on a new purchase. As a matter of fact, both the Chevy and the GMC covers comprehensive maintenance for the first visit.

Miles Per Dollar

Within five years or a run-out of 75,000 miles, the RAM 2500 Mega Cab’s overall ownership costs $70,000 approximately. For running it for 15,000 miles, a user would be expected to spend nearly $14,000 on its fuel expenses. Calculate the same for each dollar and you'd find yourself running for 0.55 miles approx.

2021 RAM 2500 Mega Cab Buying Advice

With an array of trim levels to choose from, the availability of different drive configuration options, and a user-based choice between a regular bed-size or a long bed-size, there would always be confusion arising in your mind. However, if you take our advice, we'd suggest you go for the Big Horn trim level. It might be basic in its configurations but it will be quite reliable. The 2021 Ram 2500 Mega Cab Big Horn trim level has all the main features that one needs to buy a heavy-duty truck, be it utilizing it for commercial purposes or for personal use.

These heavy-duty trucks though can become expensive for longer runs, but the Big Horn trim level MSRP starts at $46,975, which is considered reasonable and offers you all the essential technology that you might demand in a truck. But, if you are in search of some exotic interior amenities and amazing features, then the 2021 Ram 2500 Mega Cab has a huge lineup to choose from. You can select as per the size of your pocket and driving requirements.

Is buying a used RAM 2500 Mega Cab a good idea?

Before buying a used truck, you must look into some more in-depth information about how its previous owner used it. You should be well-versed with whether the owner used it for his/her personal use or some commercial purpose. Here, you need to understand that if the previous user used the car for his/her personal use, you can trust that the car would be thoroughly taken care of. But if it was used for a commercial purpose, then you must reconsider. According to a popular opinion, car users who use their trucks for commercial purposes don't usually take better care of them. The same can be said for a used RAM 2500 Mega Cab. The architecture of the RAM 2500 is commendable and the reliability quotient is also decent enough. We would advise you to look closer at the number of repairs it has received before investing in it.

2021 RAM 2500 Mega Cab Engine and Performance

9.9/10

To run a heavy-duty vehicle smoothly, a heavy-duty engine is mandatory, and RAM 2500’s manufacturers seem to comprehend this fact correctly. Similar to its 2020 year model, the 2021 RAM 2500 Mega Cab comes packed with two engine options. The gasoline version of the RAM 2500 offers a 6.4-liter V8 engine, generating a power of 410 hp @ 5,600 rpm and a torque output of 429 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm.

2021 Ram 2500 Mega Cab engine

Contrarily, the diesel version offers a 6.7-liter Cummins turbo engine with a power output of 370 hp @ 2,800 rpm and torque output of 850 lb-ft @ 1,700 rpm. The standard 6.4L V8 gasoline engine comes married to an 8-speed automatic transmission, and the 6.7L Cummins turbocharged diesel engine comes married to a 6-speed automatic transmission. All of the mega cabs are available in a standard All-Wheel Drivetrain (AWD) configuration.

Cost-wise, the 2500 Mega Cab is costlier amongst the group but when it comes to its standard engine configuration, it comes out victorious. The car delivers the highest power figures when compared to its rivals. However, in terms of torque generation, both the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 4WD Double Cab and 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4WD Double Cab lead the charts.

2021 RAM 2500 Mega Cab Acceleration And Braking Performance

As per the general notion, heavy-duty trucks are not expected to have amazing acceleration figures. They are expected to trail through rocky roads, carrying heavyweight with them. Despite everything else, the 2021 Ram 2500 Mega Cab reaches a speed of 60 mph from a steady position within 7.9 seconds, and for completing a quarter-mile distance, it takes 16.1 seconds.

2021 Ram 2500 Mega Cab brake rotors

While other trucks often struggle with passing a top-speed of 100 mph, the RAM 2500 proficiently delivers a top speed of 105 mph, that is nothing short of amusing. Coming to its braking efficiency, the 2021 RAM 2500 comes mated with all four-wheel disc brakes with the anti-lock braking system. If this massive machine is moving at a speed of 60 mph, you will be able to halt it fully at around 140 ft.

In terms of acceleration figures, the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 4WD Double Cab is truly the fastest pickup truck in the category. Following its lead is the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4WD Double Cab, which is the second-fastest with a small margin. While the 2021 RAM 2500 Mega Cab comes third with its acceleration, the truck manages to deliver the highest top speed amongst the group, having been equipped with the most effective braking system.

2021 RAM 2500 Mega Cab Fuel Economy

9.9/10

The Environmental Protection Agency does not usually rate the heavy-duty trucks in the category of fuel economy as it is an obvious fact that the trucks are supposed to trail heavy load. That's common sense because they are mostly used for commercial purposes. The same is the case with the 2021 RAM 2500 Mega Cab. Although the fuel economy ranges from 18 mpg to 28 mpg (not rigid data) as per most of its users, the fuel-tank capacity provided by the 2021 RAM 2500 is 31 gallons.

No official data has been provided for any of these vehicles’ fuel economy, and therefore, it is quite impossible to conclude which truck stands best in terms of gas mileage. However, in terms of the highest fuel-tank capacity, the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 4WD Double Cab and 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4WD Double Cab offer the largest fuel-tanks of 36 gallons.

2021 RAM 2500 Mega Cab Interior

9.9/10

It has been pretty clear that the RAM has provided various trim levels with different cab styles and configurations. This information is vital because it makes us aware that within the cabin, the tech features and the passenger space varies heavily. Even when we consider the types of materials used or the quality of the car, there would be extreme levels of variation in the specifications, in various cabs or trims.

2021 Ram 2500 Mega Cab front seat

Since we are focusing on the Mega Cab here, we can point out that the Mega Cab’s interiors stand head-to-head with the Ford, Chevy, and GMC. With precise detailing, modern design, excellent comfort, luxury and premium materials, the Mega Cab’s top-most trim would offer you a luxurious experience. The Longhorn trim, on the other hand, comes adorned with striped wooden & golden frame on the dashboard, gauges, and the doors mated with the Longhorn logo etched onto the wood on the upper glove box door of the truck. The truck's cabin has functional controls with several cubby storage areas. Its multilevel center console can even carry your 15-inch laptop.

The RAM2500 also comes with acoustic glass and active noise cancellation outfitted in the audio system to keep it all soothing and calm inside. Much too surprisingly, you get this benefit even in the diesel models. The 2021 RAM 2500's overall interior space is decent enough for a pickup truck.

2021 Ram 2500 Mega Cab rear seat

However, even with such a huge body, it fails to impress us with its first-row interior space especially when compared to its rivals such as the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 4WD Double Cab and 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD 4WD Double Cab that are offering the roomiest space for their first-row occupants. As for the second-row area, the 2021 Ford Super Duty XL 4WD SuperCab offers an equal headroom and somewhat better shoulder room than the 2021 RAM 2500 Mega Cab, but the RAM 2500 provides ample legroom space in its second-row.

How’s the 2021 RAM 2500 Mega Cab’s infotainment system?

Just because we are talking about a truck doesn't mean there won't be an infotainment system to discuss. A crossover must keep its occupants entertained, after all! Keeping that in mind, RAM has outfitted its truck with amazing infotainment technology and in-cabin tech. The system is intuitive and also acts fast when prompted. Its infotainment comes packed with an 8.0-inch touchscreen that is arranged perfectly to provide total convenience to the driver. Additionally, there is a massive 12.0-inch touchscreen, which can be reconfigured to give your truck a hi-tech feel.

2021 Ram 2500 Mega Cab infotainment system

To put a cherry on the top, the RAM’s infotainment system has a subscription-based wi-fi hotspot, navigation capability, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto integration. Besides, there are five USB ports and three 115-volts outlets that can handle 400 watts to charge stuff.

2021 RAM 2500 Mega Cab Exterior

8.7/10

We know that the interiors of the Mega Cab have been quite impressive. But what about its exteriors?

Well, the exteriors have been given some refreshments in the 2021 model. In fact, the exteriors are one factor that makes the Ram 2500 more competitive in the market. The front of the truck showcases a more aggressive and warrior-like look while keeping the modernity of the truck alive.

2021 Ram 2500 Mega Cab three quarter view

Various cosmetic changes have revamped the entire look of the car and made it more relevant to the contemporary styles of heavy-duty trucks. However, the one difference that’ll be most noticeable would be its front grille and its headlamps. They’ll look better in terms of being modern and sleek. The RAM 2500 is quite similar to its rivals with respect to its dimensions.

Though all these trucks in the lot here have an imposing style in their own distinct way. Exterior styling however, has always been a matter of personal taste and subjectivity.

But you shouldn't crease your forehead for that because the truck has been bundled up with safety features by Ram. And most of these safety features are standard. Plus, they can be mated with a long list of driver-assist technology. Some of the prominent safety features are mentioned below:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Roll Stability Control (RSC)
  • Dual-stage Driver And Passenger Seat-Mounted Side Airbags
  • ABS and Driveline Traction Control
