Overall Rating

Not holding anything back, the new and improved 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Diesel now comes bigger, bolder, and more luxurious than ever before. Ram has paid close attention to what critics and shoppers alike appreciated about the 2019 update, and added to it. There are now more options for nearly all existing trims, so you can build the Ram 1500 that perfectly suits your needs.

2020 Ram 1500 Rebel Crew Cab

The diesel powertrain from the previous year was underperforming and failed to live up to any industry-standard towing numbers. Upgrading the power delivery, the 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Diesel is rated to a maximum towing capacity of 12,560 lbs., making it a class leader in terms of towing cargo. Not only that, you can relax easily inside the cabin knowing well that the advanced suite of safety features would keep the occupants and cargo miles from harm.

8.5/10

The 2020 Ram 1500 comes as a Crew Cab in various trim levels. Unlike last year, the 3.0L Turbodiesel is available as a $4,995 option for all of them. It may sound a bit expensive but the extra power and the improved fuel economy over its gas alternatives make it well worth it. Almost all of the features that you can find standard on higher trims can be equipped on the lower ones as options. Though the base-level Tradesman can seem like good value at 43 grand, prices quickly soar as you tick more options or move up the chain.

What would we recommend?

In theory, you can build your Ram 1500 just the way you want with any trim level. Practically, it is best to go for the Rebel trim that gets most of the upscale features as standard. Anything else that you desire can be acquired from the options list.

2020 RAM 1500 diesel Crew Cab Engine

The new 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 is a long stride ahead of its predecessor. It produces 260 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. If you have any idea about trucks and towing, you’ll know that it is more than enough for anything you’ll need. The 8-Speed automatic gearbox is all the more happy for it. The shifts feel smoother and the acceleration more lively. 90% of the torque is available at 1200 rpm, so you get a lot of pull with the slightest touch of the pedal.

Since it is the torque that matters more in case of pickups, the Ram 1500 Diesel performs better than the more famous F-150 and Silverado. Only the behemoth Nissan Titan exceeds the Ram with its massive V8 engine but its aged gearbox doesn’t allow it to fully harness that potential.

Acceleration

For its four-wheel-drive version, the 2020 Ram 1500 Diesel Crew Cab can hit 60 mph from a standstill in 8.1 seconds, a whole 1 second faster than last year’s version. It might be faster but still remains marginally behind its Ford and Chevy counterparts. The Ram 1500 is quicker than the Nissan Titan XD, which lags behind due to its immense weight and a clunky gearbox.

Don’t expect an All-American diesel pickup to save you a lot of emission taxes. The Ram 1500 does improve its NOX emissions through its engine upgrade, although the CO2 emissions remain close to the 2019 figures. The Ford and Chevy pickups perform even better.

Braking

The cosmetic redesign of last year puts a bit of weight on the Ram 1500, particularly on the front fenders and side skirts. The truck might look better but it gets more difficult to stop it at speed. The larger brake pads do help a bit, yet fail to bring it to a complete halt from 70 mph within 200 feet. Even at slower speeds, the Ford and Chevy pickups have superior braking capabilities.

Ride and Handling

With the default suspension in place, the ride is nothing to complain about. However, going for the optional adaptive air suspension makes a difference of night and day. The stiffness can be adjusted for different pavements and off-road journeys. It is a bit weird to operate a dial-selector switch to change the driving mode. Other than that, the Ram 1500 feels good to drive around in. It is a truck perfect for hauling cargo over long distances.

2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Handling

You may expect the EcoDiesel V6 to have a loud grunt. On the contrary, it is surprisingly quiet at city speeds. The wind and road noise also only becomes noticeable once you open up the throttle on the highway. For its size, the Ram 1500 is quite nimble. Just a flick of the steering can send the truck in the desired direction. With the stability control on, the body roll around corners is kept in check as well.

2020 RAM 1500 diesel Crew Cab Fuel Economy

Just as you would expect, the EcoDiesel improves upon its gas cousins by a considerable margin. Still, it is less economical than its American rivals. The Silverado’s Duramax engine leads in terms of fuel economy, offering a generous 27 miles of highway road to cover with just one gallon of diesel fuel. The 26-gallon fuel tank grants the Ram a decent range. The truck can easily do more than 600 miles on a full tank before it needs to refuel.

2020 RAM 1500 diesel Crew Cab Interior

7.8/10

Depending on which trim or option you choose, your 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab can vary a lot in terms of interior. The standard seats are 4-Way manual adjustable and can split into a 40/20/40 bench to make more space for cargo. Options include upgrading to 8-way power-adjustable seats that can have multi-level heating and ventilation, leather finish, memory adjustment, and power-adjustable lumbar and height support.

There is ample room for all occupants, front and back. The Rebel trim limits the seating to just five even in the standard bed Crew Cab configuration, whereas all the other trucks in its class can easily hold six passengers. The interior panels can be made out of leather, Alcantara, aluminum or wood, depending on your choice. There is also an optional moonroof that adds in a bit more flair to the cabin.

Infotainment System

The 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Diesel uses the same Uconnect infotainment system as last year. The 5.0-inch touchscreen comes as standard that can be upgraded to 8 or 12 inches. The system supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth, USB, AUX input, AM/FM/HD radio, and SiriusXM satellite radio that is complimentary for the first 12 months. The driver side dash boasts a 7-inch TFT display that acts as the cluster gauge. Ram even throws in an option for a Heads-Up Display.

There are three different audio systems available for the Ram 1500. There is a standard 6-speaker sound system that does not even have a subwoofer. You are better off upgrading to the Alpine 9-speaker 506-Watt system that supports surround sound. For true audiophiles, Ram offers the option for a 19-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system. It draws 900 Watts and has a 9-inch subwoofer below each door, along with a 10-inch subwoofer behind the rear seats. The system uses Green Edge technology to reduce the power consumed by the system without compromising impeccable sound quality fit for all genres of music.

Cargo and Utility

Even the short bed variant of Rebel Crew Cab boasts 53.9 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seats, which is bigger than what you get in most SUVs. In terms of towing, the 2020 Ram 1500 Diesel is rated to pull 12,560 pounds, making it gain headway over all other pickups in its class. The payload for the bed is just about average at 2,040 pounds.

Inside the cabin, the small-item storage is just as impressive. The compartment below the console offers an additional 1.4 cubic feet of space. 2020 RAM 1500 diesel Crew Cab Exterior

There is little to no cosmetic update for the Ram 1500 from last year. The design got it a more modern look, which best shows itself in the Rebel. The front grille looks like it has grown a metallic mustache. The hood seems more sporty and the side profile is cleaner. The look is a bit divisive for long-time Ram fans, that is why the Ram 1500 comes with a separate Classic lineup. The alloy wheels and the new tailgate add to its panache. The same color schemes carry on as well.

Even with the standard Crew Cab bed, the 2020 Ram 1500 seems like a force to be reckoned with. The tailgate seems small but the truck extends to more than 82 inches from the sides, more so with the optional retractable power steps. It will definitely take up space inside the parking lot, which is part of its appeal. The only truck you’ll find bigger within this segment is the mighty Nissan Titan XD.

2020 RAM 1500 diesel Crew Cab Safety

The 2020 Ram 1500 is the only truck to gain a Top Safety Pick Plus rating from the IIHS. It received the highest rating of ‘Good’ in all categories for its crashworthiness. The truck improved from previous years by making use of superior LED headlights instead of halogen ones as standard for all trims. The new metal chassis is strong in all the right places, having crumple zones for every passenger to ensure maximum protection in the event of a crash. The NHTSA has given the 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab the highest overall rating of five stars.

And that is when the crash occurs in the first place. The Advanced Safety Group package equips the Ram 1500 with all the advanced safety systems that you would normally find in high-end luxury cars. In the collision mitigation tests conducted by the IIHS, the Ram 1500 was able to prevent a collision at speeds up to 25 mph. All of this makes sure that your new 1500 remains scratch-free every time you return home from a drive.

2020 RAM 1500 diesel Crew Cab Competition

Ram 1500 vs Ford F-150

2020 Ford F-150 LARIAT

Going up against the best-selling pickup in the entirety of the USA poses a monumental challenge. The 2020 Ram 1500 seems to gear itself up pretty good for the same. The Ford might be cheaper but its diesel V6 fails to exceed the powertrain capabilities of the Ram that forces it to make do with a lower towing capacity. The Ram 1500 also exceeds with its premium quality interior that gets started early on in the trim levels, which the F-150 reserves only for the top. The Ford only gets ahead in performance, both on and off-road. That is in large part due to its slick 10-speed automatic transmission that has various modes for low-traction situations, something the Ram 1500 sorely needs.

Ram 1500 vs Chevrolet Silverado 1500

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The Ram 1500 and Chevy Silverado 1500 cater to two very contrasting preferences. As far as power is concerned, the Ram 1500 Crew Cab Diesel is with no doubt the better pickup. On the other end of the spectrum, the Duramax engine offers a better fuel economy. The infotainment system follows the same story. The Uconnect packs in more features while the aging Sync3 is easier to use. It really comes down to whether you want to save a few bucks for trading in some utility and luxury when going for the Silverado. All things considered, the Ram 1500 Crew Cab is a much better deal. Not only do you get a more upscale cabin but also the confidence of driving the safest full-size pickup in America.

Ram 1500 vs Nissan Titan XD

2020 Nissan Titan XD

The Nissan Titan has remained largely the same for so long that it can now be considered a classic. While the Ram had been fully redesigned from the ground up just last year, there is barely any difference in the Titan from as far back as five years ago. It is definitely a rugged machine with a lot of mechanical instead of digital systems that inhabit its chassis. Nevertheless, it has started to show its age for quite some time now. The Titan's case is made worse with its sub-par safety ratings and lets you feel its excess weight around corners. It might be favored by true pickup enthusiasts that have nostalgia for old-school trucks. For the more sensible buyers, the more present-day Ram 1500 holds a much better appeal.

2020 RAM 1500 diesel Crew Cab Final Verdict

In its entirety, the new EcoDiesel is a nice addition to the available drivetrains to the 2020 Ram 1500. With its already great interior and exterior features along with the Crew Cab's increased safety ratings makes you question why you would consider any of the Ford or Chevy alternatives. The Ram 1500 excels in all aspects that one would hold in high regard in a full-size pickup. It is highly functional and reliable. With the right build, it can make you forget that you're sitting inside a pickup truck and not a luxury cruiser.
