The RAM 1500 Crew Cab can be quite a sight in the full-size pickup class. It comes with some very luxurious trims, which look very rich when decked up in chrome and all other embellishments. The RAM 1500 is available in three body styles, two drivetrain options, two different bed lengths, and several trim levels.

Useful enough as my work buddy

Pros - A perfect work truck

Cons - Towing maximum potential is a little less than Ford

Good enough I just wanted a truck where everybody could sit in and I can use for my work purposes and hauling. I went for the Limited edition as my family wanted some exciting features and those have been satisfied mostly. The seats are a plus as they are so comfortable. However, the towing capacity is a minus. Large inventory of vehicles. Lots to choose from which was sometimes a positive and the other times a hassle.

The best truck even with its flaws

Pros - Smooth driving, warranty, price

Cons - Light road-noise, cargo space

Very pleased with what I have RAM was one of the first to add modern features to its truck and it paid off big time. I was one of the buyers who wanted some tech in the truck and RAM was an obvious choice. I love it for what it is. It has stayed true to its roots with good performance and amazing towing capacity and on top of that, it has all the latest features that have become necessities today. Good infotainment goes long way in the user experience and RAM knows it better than anyone else. Value for money. The dealer was good. He was experienced and did not rush us.

My beefy RAM truck!

Pros - Muscular American look. Great payload ratings. Efficient engine.

Cons - Costs more. Difficult to maneuver.

Little expensive but quite capable! I have always liked the beefy, classic look of an American truck on my 1500. It has been a great truck with a comfortable cabin and truck bed that can hold a commendable payload. I mostly use it for my homegrown business and sparingly for family trips. Either way the truck has been great. The engine also returns a respectable fuel economy. However, I do feel if you only require a versatile work truck maybe the Colorado or Tacoma may fit the bill at amuch lower price! Nothing much to complain about the dealer. They have also been faultless in their work and always get the truck ready within the promised time!

For the 2015 model year, the RAM does not get much in terms of upgrades and is pretty much carried over unchanged. It is a very well loaded car and competes against the likes of Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 in a segment with very heavy competition. Let's see how this offering from RAM performs against its arch-rivals in the segment.

2015 RAM 1500 Pricing and Features

9.0/10

The 2015 RAM 1500 Crew Cab is available in six different trims, namely Tradesman, Express, SLT, Sport, Laramie, and Longhorn. These again are split into three powertrains - a 3.6L V6, a 5.7L V8, and a 3L V6 diesel. There are RWD and 4WD versions as well as two different bed sizes – a 5’7” bed is standard and can be upgraded to a 6’4” bed. The base trim itself is pretty well loaded, coming with features like 17-inch wheels, automatic headlights, sprayed in bed liner, air-conditioning, cruise control, six-speaker sound system with USB, and so on.

The SLT trim with the four-wheel-drive option seems to be a bestseller of the lot. This is not surprising when you see that it starts at a reasonable price of MSRP $38,915 and comes with features such as chrome exterior trim, heated mirrors, power accessories, an overhead console, dual glove boxes, 5-inch touchscreen interface, satellite radio, and Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity. It is also eligible for a lot of optional extras and hence makes for an excellent pick.

2015 RAM 1500 Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The RAM 1500 is available with three engine options, two gasoline – a 3.6L V6 and a 5.7L V-8, and a 3L diesel V6. All these engines are available in Crew Cab form and across all trim levels. The base 3.6 L V6 produces 305 hp and is matched to an 8-speed automatic transmission. All three engines are offered in both rear and all-wheel-drive configurations.

The 5.7L V8 is much more powerful and produces 395 hp and 410 pound-feet of torque and is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission or an 8-speed transmission depending on trim level. The diesel engine is the most frugal but only produces 240 hp and 420 pound-feet of torque while being paired to the eight-speed automatic transmission.

The RAM 1500 has the most powerful engine on paper as well as in terms of acceleration figures. However, the Chevrolet and Ford have better towing capabilities and hence have an edge in terms of practicality. All three vehicles feel very fast when driven around except the diesel powertrain option in the RAM. The 5.7 L V-8 is extremely fast for the segment.

2015 RAM 1500 Fuel Economy

6.0/10

Even though we expect the bare minimum out of it, the full-size trucks have started bettering their fuel efficiency. We have the RAM 1500 returning a combined figure of 20 MPG, which translates to 17 MPG in the city and 25 MPG on the highway. This goes slightly down when you opt for the all-wheel-drive versions. But when you add the fact that it has a 26-gallon tank, it returns a decent fuel range between 416 miles to 598 miles on a full tank of gas, which is way more than necessary.

The RAM feels like a gas guzzler only when you operate it on the low-range gear setting on all-wheel-drive models. The most fuel-efficient car in the line-up would be the diesel engine, which returns an EPA estimated 24 MPG combined, 21 MPG in the city, and 29 MPG on the highway, which are absolutely mind-blowing figures. None of the competitors can match this kind of efficiency but remain competitive when you compare the base engines.

2015 RAM 1500 Interior

7.0/10

The interior of the RAM 1500 is a deed that is truly well done. The seats are very comfy and supportive for long journeys and controls are very easily accessible. The storage spaces offered are also quite generous in the car, with functional additions such as watertight storage compartments under the rear floor. There are lots of convenience features, and the material quality used is very plush, overall making the cabin the class benchmark.

The crew cab version of the RAM 1500 makes sure that the whole family can enjoy the great experience that the interior provides. Even the base trim has features that appeal well to buyers and is made of reasonably good materials. When comparing the cargo capacity, Ford offers the most at 59.9 cubic feet. Some of its interior features include:

  • Single zone front air conditioning
  • Front and rear cup holders
  • Bucket front seats
  • Trip computer
  • Front reading lights
  • Front and rear door pockets

Infotainment unit

The infotainment unit in the RAM 1500 is also quite nice. A 5.8-inch system comes as standard, while an 8.4-inch touchscreen system is available as an option. Both of these systems offer controls that are easy-to-use as well as the displays are easy to read and offer excellent graphics. Few standout infotainment features available with the pickup are-

  • Bluetooth
  • USB connection
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • 6-speaker sound system
  • Smartphone connectivity
  • Wi-Fi hotspot capability
  • Optional 8.4-inch touchscreen navigation

2015 RAM 1500 Exterior

7.0/10

RAM has done well in all departments when it comes to the 2015 models of the RAM 1500 except the exterior. It definitely looks dated and needs an upgrade soon. It does not look quite as aggressive or quite as elegant as its competitors that have now moved onto much newer and cohesive designs. However, this shouldn’t be a hindrance for someone who intends to use this as a work truck.

The RAM 1500 and Ford F-150 are a bit heavier when compared to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, which only weighs 5,099 pounds. The Chevrolet also provides the most ground clearance, and this comes into play when you equip it with the Z71 off-road package. In terms of wheelbase, the Ford is considerably longer than both the RAM and Chevrolet at 156.5 inches. Some standout exterior features include:

  • Single tip exhaust
  • All-terrain tires
  • 17-inch rims
  • Black bumpers
  • Front license plate bracket

2015 RAM 1500 Safety

7.0/10

The RAM 1500 has performed satisfactorily well in terms of safety. In the NHTSA crash tests, the RAM 1500 scored an overall four out of five stars, which is quite decent for a pickup truck. Standard safety features on the 2015 RAM 1500 include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front and rear airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, optional front, and rear parking sensors, and so on. Some standout safety features available with the RAM 1500 are-

  •  Child seat anchors
  •  ABS and EBD
  •  4 wheel disc brakes
  •  Tire pressure monitoring system
  •  Front and side airbags
  • Child safety locks
  • Full-length side curtain airbags
  • Traction control

2015 RAM 1500 Final Verdict

The 2015 RAM 1500 Crew Cab has the most luxurious and well-designed cabin you can find in the full-size pickup truck class. It is a value-for-money pick in the segment and promises a lot of features, good safety, as well as amazing performance. One also gets the best ride quality and handling in the segment with this truck. One of the only complaints about the truck is that the rotary gear knob has not suited well to most users, but small details like this aside, the truck is still a great buy.
