Being a sedan, coming from Porsche, the image comes out to be a sports sedan with agility to beat most proper track cars. What Porsche has now been focusing on are the cars of luxury segment, which sure comes with major pros of which safety is considered in top priority. Being the latest in the EV segment and quite anticipated one, Taycan has to check many boxes to appeal to the public.

How safe is the Taycan?

With the inclusion of a high voltage battery, passive safety features are given quite the importance in this segment of cars. The crash sensors of the Taycan are specifically designed keeping in mind the architecture and requirements of EVs. Therefore, additional sensors are stuffed to disconnect the supply and ensure there is no leak in event of a crash. Such sensors are located centrally in a safe protected area.

The battery modules are built in the battery frame in such a way that maximum passive and high-voltage safety is achieved in event of a crash. The battery frame is rigid, seal-welded, lightweight aluminium structure. A truss structure inside the particularly rigid all-round frame and crash box elements provides additional protection in the event of an impact. A steel plate protects the battery and the cooling structure against damage from below.

Along with the body which is crash-optimized other passive safety features provides maximum protection. Three point seat-belts with force limiters are fitted as standard. The Porsche Side Impact Protection System ensures there are airbags in the seat bolsters and curtain airbags. In total, 8 airbags are fitted as standard and side airbags are an option in the Taycan.

What features makes the Taycan safe?

Alongwith, the passive safety features like rigid and safe body shell, Taycan is also fitted with active driver assistance features like automated emergency braking, forward collision warning and lane keep assist feature as standard. You can also add to cart some additional features like adaptive cruise control ($2050), front and rear parking sensors($1200) and blind spot monitoring($950). There also is an option of Porsche’s Innodrive feature which if you have a destination programmed in the navigation will also slow you down for curves, this basically is an advanced version of adaptive cruise control.

Some features which need some recognition offered in the Taycan are-

  • Automated Emergency Braking - This feature helps to lower the severity of the rear end crash or helps prevent it. It helps the driver provide maximum braking power if it senses the crash is imminent.
  • Blind Spot Monitoring System - This system engages the sensors to detect the objects or vehicles in the rear or side where the driver cannot see.
  • Standard Lane Keep Assist - This feature provides audio and visual notifications to let the driver know the car is shifting lanes without signalling. Some more advanced lane-keep-assists steers the car back into the very lane without the driver’s intervention.
