Now, as the popularity of the electric cars increased, everybody wants a share in the pie. The big boys of sports car town heard the news too and came up with their “Mission E” concept which now is launched as Porsche Taycan.

Porsche going electric news didn’t seem to please the purists but, I’m glad to inform you that the all-new Taycan is every it Porsche as you would imagine. The aggressive styling, insane acceleration, and precise handling of this very sedan live up to the brand’s name.

The Taycan comes in four trims, the base 4S, Turbo, and Turbo S, even though all of these run on electric power. The Porsche people have kept this nomenclature even though electric vehicles aren’t the things of the future, people still need a hand to walk them to the electric car era.

Now, Tesla doesn’t get to boast their exclusivity in the big-bodied electric car market, the big boys have stepped up their game. Talking of performance even the base 4S model can be opted with Performance Battery Pack that turns up the performance wick a smidge.

The Taycan 4S is loaded to the hilt, with a selection of amazing creature comforts and features, that's sure to blow off your mind. Here is a list of few of the most notable highlights of the 2020 Porsche Taycan 4S.

Which trim to go for?

Buying a Porsche is a tough job on its own, our pick is the “cheaper”, in Porsche’s terms the 4S model. It is quick enough 3.8 seconds and is expected to deliver more range than the Turbo models. Although the Porsche’s options list is longer than a trans-Atlantic flight and far pricer than you would expect. But, you should consider 150kW charger that triples maximum charging power at 400-V DC fast-charging stations.

2020 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan Engine and Performance

The Taycan 4S features two electric motors on each axle, making it four-wheel drive from a 79.2kWh battery but a 93.4kWh battery pack is optional. This makes it put out a peak power of 522hp with base battery and 563hp with a bigger battery. The peak power only comes in short bursts to prevent the battery pack from overheating, after that the power drops to the regular 429hp. The rear motor is run by a unique 2-speed transmission. During regular driving the change in gear is imperceptible but activating the launch control, the shift from one to two is quick and vigorous, as in any gas-powered supercar. EVs tend to slow down after battery gets depleted but according to Porsche, the Taycan is able to execute ten repeated launches with consistent performance.

Power (hp @ rpm)

Torque (lb-ft @ rpm)

Although the Tesla annihilates the Porsche in terms of engine output and being quicker off the line in 2.4 seconds compared to Porsche’s 3.8 seconds. Taycan featuring a two-speed transmission sure is expected to give it a boost in mid-range as compared to Tesla’s single speed.

Is the Porsche faster than Tesla?

The base Taycan putting out a healthy 429 horsepower and 522 horses in over-boost pushing to 60mph in 3.8 seconds, the instant torque is enough to blow your mind. That sure is not even close to the Tesla’s neck-snapping 723 lb-ft of torque. There isn’t any competition if cornering speeds aren’t included.

2020 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan 0-60 MPH in just 3.8 sec

Although, talking of the Turbo S model, comes very close punching 60 in 2.6 seconds. In the real world, you'll be pushed back to your seat, the moment you step of the accelerator pedal, hard. The instant torque will shove you back to the seat and you'll be left dazzled by the acceleration from the motor.

As the tables suggest, Porsche's attempt of shattering the Model S' records have been shattered with these results. However, if you don't judge by the numbers, the Taycan 4S, will be as enthralling and engaging to ride, as the Porsche.

How good is the Braking performance?

To bring the hefty 5000 lbs machine to stop, 6 piston fixed caliper front brakes and 4 piston rear brakes with cast iron discs are provided. If you tend to brake late you really should opt for the optional carbon-ceramic brakes. Although, as the Porsche is known for their sports car feel, the brake pedal feel is not up to the mark, the initial bite of the brakes is not as hard you really need to dig into the pedal to work, which doesn’t seem sporty at all.

2020 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan Front Brake is 360 mm

With the Taycan Porsche stands against the regenerative braking messing into the pedal feel so if you have to slow down. Although, the regen braking can be adjusted by a button the steering wheel.

While we don't have the figures for stopping distances, with the kind of equipment on board both of these cars, we expect the braking performance of both these vehicles to be top-notch.

What about the Ride and Handling?

On paper, it absolutely doesn’t make any sense why anyone should buy a Porsche. But, once you drive one you can’t help but fall in love. Porsche makes high-quality cars that drive really really well. You obviously get to notice the eerie silence in the cabin when you’re cruising around the town. But, as soon as you slip into the Sport mode a whizzing sound makes it futuristic and adds to the experience. Oh, did I mention you can slide an elephant over it just coughing? Because, surprisingly, the 4S model is the slipperiest of all with the drag coefficient of just 0.22.

The 4S comes with standard 19-inch wheels, while it is supposed to have a stiff suspension and ride is supposed to be cruel and harsh, it doesn’t disappoint in either ride or handling. The car can handle a few imperfections on the road with ease and without complaint. The ride is fairly smooth and compliant.

2020 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan Rear View

Coming to the steering wheel, it sure is precise but is numb. A very little feedback is given via the steering wheel which is very unlike Porsche. Coming to the real stuff where Porsche doesn’t seem to disappoint is the handling. Hustling through complex corners is where it really makes you wonder if the laws of physics still work. 600 lbs heavier than the heavyweight champ in their own house the Panamera Turbo, the agility is ungodly. It is a miracle how it hides its weight. The skateboard-like architecture makes the heavy batteries sit on the bottom of the car getting the center of gravity down low resulting in very less body roll and immense grip.

Porsche uses a centrally networked control system for the Taycan chassis. The integrated Porsche 4D Chassis Control analyses and synchronizes all chassis systems in real-time. As standard, the Taycan 4S features adaptive air suspension with three-chamber technology including electronic damper control PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management).

In the handling department, the Taycan is unmatched let it be the most powerful Tesla. If the Model S went down a canyon road as fast as a Taycan, it wouldn’t go around at all.

2020 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan Fuel Economy

With its very first 800V architecture Porsche boasts superfast recharging, imagine getting 60 miles of range in just 5 minutes of charge, as Porsche claims, impressive, isn’t it? Although it is an expensive decision, Porsche had to fulfill their vision. This makes this car viable for long trips which this tourer sedan is made for.

The Taycan is rated for about 280 miles but on the harsher or more realistic environment, it can go for 225 miles.

The Model S has a huge advantage in terms of the range it offers but in a Porsche you will enjoy every mile rather than counting miles in a Tesla.

2020 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan Interior

With the Taycan, Porsche took the stand against the interior with buttons. The last dramatic interior change was with the Panamera but with Taycan it has gone to a whole new level. Partial leather upholstery is standard which can be upgraded to full leather or leather-free suede. The standard upholstery is made of recycled leather, seems like Porsche is going environmentally-friendly all the way.

The new steering wheel shows off some floating elements similar to the new generation 911. Porsche Communication Management display sits in front and centre of the dashboard, a wide welcoming screen is all you’ll see when first entering. Another touchscreen sits a little below the first which is divided into two halves the upper half is for your climate control and seat functionalities. The lower half is for frequently used areas like volume control or opening the trunk.

Rear Row (Head/Shoulder/Leg) (in)

The front seats are comfy and nicely cushioned and rear seats have enough leg room because the electric motors don’t really take enough space but not much headroom because the batteries are laid down low in the car making it less accommodating for taller passengers. The middle rear seat is optional and for securing child seats it also has two latches.

What to expect on the features front?

The Taycan 4S doesn't feel devoid of features on the inside and here is a quick look at the biggest highlights

  • Auto-Matic Advanced Climate Control
  • Auto-Dimming Interior Rearview Mirror and Digital Compass
  • Power Windows with Pinch Protection
  • 14 /18(Optional) Way Adjustable front row Seats with narrow headrests.
  • Multi-Function Sports and Optional Gt Sports Steering Wheel
  • Optional Ambient Lighting Interiors
  • Optional dashboard in aluminium, carbon or paleo wood

The Car comes with loads of Infotainment features the Apple Car Play support and Porsche Communication Management are among the major highlights. A unique Drive Assist feature Navigation Plus that retrieves real-time traffic information on the road. Porsche promises a seamless 6 Months free Subscription of Apple Music for Taycan owners so now one can stream over 50 Million songs ad-free and other apple music play features such as driving mood.

How practical is the Taycan on the Cargo front?

Well Equipped with 81 Litres cabin space at the front to store smaller luggage items, Combining the rear boot space of 366 Litres, the vehicle has a 447 Litres of Baggage capacity and that’s enough for a Sedan of this Size. The Cargo Capacity can also be extended by folding the rear seat backrests.

The Chassis of a performance Car can hold anyone for a while to look back, and when one knows its a Porsche they find another reason for a head turn. The galloping roofline which runs from the cowl to the bonnet of this four-door sedan is amazingly capturing especially when it runs the track. The Aerodynamic Design can be felt with just a glimpse of the car which runs low in height, and a sleek, sharp and racy look of the car which finds its DNA from the Porsche tree is quite captivating. At the front, the Curvy cowl which in a practical sense does not require a grille for engine cooling being an Electric drive has got lateral air intakes on either side for cooling down the battery and runs beneath the line as a signature to Porsche’s design line. The Four-Point LED lights on the front extend the looks of the car and other performance features in this Sedan can be rarely kept unnoticed especially the 21 Inch Wheels.

2020 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan Competition

Porsche Taycan 4S vs Tesla Model S

Porsche Taycan Turbo S the top of the Taycan Tree has a record of taking down the Model S in track and promises to deliver repeatable performance every time. The reliability and trust of Porsche is another thing that will make one opt for this Car, it is too charming for a 4 Door electric sedan to take down a Tesla in terms of performance as the racing pedigree is still embraced in the Porsche world. Where it lacks is the range and charge which Tesla has in abundance and the Fast Charging infra where Tesla gets a monopoly over Porsche.

The stunning Tesla Model S in all its Glory

2020 Porsche Taycan 4S Sedan Final Verdict

Setting the price aside, the Taycan is an impressive machine. You could almost say the Taycan is practical too but appears to be far into the performance side. There is still a lot of room for improvement but all in all, we can say it is a win for the Porsche.
