Expert Review

Porsche Panamera has been on the roads since 2009 and will continue to do so with the 2021 model coming up soon. With the second generation, Porsche Introduced the Sport Turismo which is essentially a regular Panamera but with an estate body style for added practicality and comfort. The 2021 Panamera Sport Turismo powered by a 2.9L bi-turbo V6 that was previously reserved for the hybrid models and now churns out marginally lesser power at 325 hp but is much more fuel-efficient. With its approach to performance, it proves to be a worthy competitor to the Mercedes Benz S-Class, Audi A8 L, and the BMW 7-Series

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Wagon Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Porsche is ranked the second most reliable car brand by JD power and the Panamera Sport Turismo doesn't offer less. The powerful engine and its looks remain the same for a long time. The ratings are above average too and Porsche provides a great warranty. However, it is expensive to equip the car with all the driver-assist features.

Reliability and Ownership Costs

Judging a car on the basis of its reliability is the task best performed by J.D. Power since its ratings are dependent on user feedback. Thankfully, the Porsche Panamera is part of the top crop by scoring 79 out of a possible 100 for the 2020 model year which makes it a pretty reliable offering from the brand. To build on that, the 2019 and 2020 model year did not see any recalls as well which further strengthens its stance as a durable and dependable vehicle that can surely endure the test of time. Hopefully, the 2021 model year will build on the premise of its predecessors and maintain a clean slate.

Despite being a sport centric car, it is still the only sedan offering from the brand that has given the world the magnificent 911 Carrera. So, you can rest assured that performance will be a big part of this ride. However, cars like these often take a toll on your savings as they can be slightly costly to maintain considering their opulent nature. The following are the 5-year costs of ownership for the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo:

The costs are highest in the first year owing to the heavy depreciation and the higher taxes you pay. But right from the second year itself, the costs dip by almost 31% and hence become more bearable where you spend only about $1,700 a month in its upkeep costs. If this still seems high for you, you can purchase a maintenance plan which can help to offset the costs of ownership.

Warranty

The warranty provided by Porsche is the best among the rivals in the segment. It provides Limited and Powertrain warranty, with 24-hour roadside assistance for a period 4 years or 50,000 miles which is impressive.

Powertrain warranty

4 Years / 50,000 Miles; whichever is first

24-hour roadside assistance

The warranty provided by Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi for their ultra-premium sedans is also similar. With that said, both Porsche and its German cousin Audi offer complimentary maintenance for 1 year. And if you are buying the Sport Turismo as your long term road partner, then you can also take a look at the extended warranty plan that can cover your Porsche for a total of 10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever is earlier.

Miles Per Dollar

The Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo incurs $2,500 as fuel costs on average. Given that you might run it around 15,000 miles in the course of a year, you will get about 6 miles per dollar that you spend on it. Considering its a Porsche, that is still an acceptable figure.

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Wagon Buying Advice

The Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo tries to strike the perfect balance in terms of practicality, comfort, and performance. Though it offers a lot, it still misses out on some features. We would recommend you pick up the wagon with the Premium Package to make sure it becomes a bang for the buck offering at its price.

Is buying a used Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo a good idea?

The Panamera’s reliability is always looked upon. It lasts almost 10 years with only minor problems like any other car. It can also last up to 200,000 miles if maintained properly. The value of the Porsche depreciates the maximum in the first year, and the majority of its purchase value goes out the door in the first three years. In other words, it’s a good idea to go for a used Panamera.

If you have been in a dilemma about which year to put your money down on, the previous-generation 2016 model seems like a good fit. However, if that seems too old for you, you can always get the 2018 model which has completed all the recalls.

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Wagon Engine and Performance

The Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is known for its incredible power and agile handling combination. The Sport Turismo is powered by a 2.9L bi-turbo V6 engine that puts out 325hp and 331 lb-ft torque. The transmission in place is the charismatic and buttery smooth 8-speed PDK automatic which is now coasting capable. The drive experience stays agile like the sedan and you will be mesmerized by the capabilities of this rejuvenated powerhouse.

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Wagon engine

The capability for coasting is activated in the Normal drive mode by default and stays in place until you switch into the Sport mode. Coasting allows you to save fuel during the ride in your daily driving hence making the Panamera more fuel-efficient than it ever was. And the best part is that even when it is coasting, you will not feel any different than the usual days. So, that quintessential feel of the drive stays intact.

The Panamera 4 Sport Turismo gives out 325 hp which is a bit less among its class but its performance is still exemplary. The Mercedes Benz S class is the most powerful six-cylinder limousine with 362hp. All of them are powered by V6 turbocharged engines while the BMW 7 Series is powered by a smooth straight-6 engine producing 330 horsepower. The Audi A8 L matches the Bimmer in terms of power but packs more pulling strength

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Acceleration And Braking Performance

The Porsche Panamera 4 Sport Turismo goes from 0-60 in just 5.0 seconds. This means that despite that wagon body adding weight, the Sport Turismo is still 0.3 seconds faster than its sedan sibling. An impressive feat after all. This is also attributed to the PDK transmission that puts power on all the wheels at the right time and helps the wagon to put forward an impressive show.

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Wagon 0-60 mph just in 5.0 sec

The vehicle comes equipped with large front and rear performance brake rotors powerful enough to stop this long roof wagon in its tracks. Lower curb weight and the front engine should also be given credit to its braking performance. Track days aside, even on normal driving days, during emergency situations, the brakes won't let you down and you will come to a stop without ever feeling that you might fly out the windshield if you stomp on that brake pedal.

Amongst its rivals, the Sport Turismo is now the fastest and the baddest while the others still try to buck up to its prowess. The Mercedes Benz S-Class and BMW 7-Series tie in second place, while the Audi A8 L takes a relaxed approach with its time and hence sits in the last spot. Another notable change is that the top speed of the wagon has been pumped up from 161 MPH to 164 MPH this year around. While that's not a significant bump, but if you do wanted to go faster, now you can.

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Wagon Fuel Economy

The new Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo returns good fuel economy figures offering 26.1 mpg combined. Its fuel capacity is 23.7-gallons which gives the grand tourer yet sporty wagon a range of up to 618.5 miles overall. This figure is a big improvement over the previous year's figures and hence you can walk away with the satisfaction that its money well spent.

The fuel economy of the Porsche Panamera far outweighs its rivals. While the 7-Series has remained the leader of the pack thus far, the Panamera takes the fight right up to the Bavarian's gates with its numbers. The hard work that the geniuses at Porsche AG have put into the powerhouse of the ride shows fully as the BMW now slips into second place and gives out the crown to Panamera. The S-Class sits second to last while the the A8 is a true fuel burner with its numbers.

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Wagon Interior

The 2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is easily one of the most luxurious and comfortable cars that Porsche makes. The cabin is a huge departure from the older Panamera. It gets a big infotainment screen in the middle of the dashboard and most of the physical buttons are replaced with touch panels to keep the cabin as minimalistic as possible. The driver’s display is all new as well. Gone are the physical dials and are replaced by high definition screens except for the rev counter, which is still analog. Every piece of material inside the cabin is of the highest quality which is typical of a Porsche.

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Wagon rear seats

The seats are cushioned and the cabin can seat 4 people comfortably while seating 5 is available but not favored by most. The 8-way power-adjustable and heated front seats add to comfort for the driver and the front passenger. As trim levels go up, you are greeted with more advanced features and luxury. It also comes with a signature watch that you can find in the entire lineup of Porsche

Its cargo capacity is similar to the standard Panamera with 17.6 cubic feet but is more accessible thanks to a hatchback-esque approach. More cargo space can be obtained by folding the powered rear seats. The interior is available in a lot of combinations which include Leather and Alcantara trim. The rear seats allow you to stay comfortable in most conditions, and thanks to the wagon roofline, the tall folks will not have any problem in seating themselves comfortably.

Furthermore, to make things even more interesting, you get a lot of customization options to make the interiors as immersive as can be. From heating and ventilation for the rear seats to individual rear entertainment screens to the kind of upholstery you want, the sky is literally the limit for building the Panamera of your dreams.

Porsche Panamera Infotainment system

The infotainment system on the 2021 Panamera Sport Turismo includes Apple CarPlay and Built-in navigation as standard. Though Android Capability is not available, the 12.3-inch infotainment system has a lot of features itself. The Piano Black Instrument Panels make it look modern and stylish. Porsche Communication Management and Porsche Connect capabilities make sure that the system remains engrossing and capable to suit the needs of the occupants.

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Wagon dashboard

It also includes two 12Volts power outlets as a standard. Even the seats can be adjusted using this infotainment system. Other than this, it supports wifi hotspot as well. As standard, you get a 7-speaker sound system which is decent at best. For more immersive experience, you can add the 14-speaker Bose Surround Sound system or the even more hefty and burly 21-speaker Burmester 3D Surround Sound System. If you are going to pick it up as a driven ride, then you can even get two 10 inch touch screens added for the rear seats from the add-on options.

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Wagon Exterior

The Panamera Sport Turismo looks long and bulky enough to enter the station wagon territory with its extended roofline. It's got a similar dimension as the standard Panamera except it is a tad bit longer. At the front, it continues with the similar design updates as seen on the 2018 update. However, the new changes are a more prominent front grille along with LED Strip DRLs in the front air intakes. Riding on 20-inch wheels, you also get summer performance tires as standard that give you the flair of the sportiness of being a Porsche.

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Wagon third-quarter view

As you move to the sides, the shape remains curvy in the right places and adds straight and aggressive lines in the right places. Even when it rolls down the street, you won't feel like its a wagon, because it will carve a beautiful silhouette. You also get dual-panoramic sunroofs with a black roof for adding that vibe of an opulent chariot. The rear gets sharper with the smoked look and embossed PORSCHE badging. While quad-tip exhausts are reserved for the performance-centric GTS and 4S E-Hybrid models, the standard models get dual exhaust tips to still keep things interesting.

The Panamera Sport Turismo is not as heavy as its rivals, which explains its quick acceleration times and incredible braking performance. The wheelbase is relatively small at 116.1 inches, the reason for its agile handling, and great driving dynamics but does not compromise a lot for rear legroom and comfort. The cabin feels much tighter and sporty when compared to its rivals as the Panamera is not an outright luxury estate. It has an underlying sporty character that continues in the back which robs away some of the comforts.

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Wagon Safety

The 2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo gets a ton of advanced safety features as standard. The kit includes Brake Assist, ABS and Driveline Traction, backup cameras, and parking sensors as standard. Further. Forward collision preparation, automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure alert, and lane-keeping assist are some of the available packages across the board. The NHTSA and IIHS have not rated the 2021 model nor its previous models owing to its exclusivity and its stature.

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Wagon Competition

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Vs 2020 Mercedes-Benz S Class

The Porsche Panamera is a very powerful car, but the standard model doesn't offer as much power or opulence as the Mercedes Benz S class. The S-Class has long been the reigning champion in the segment of ultra opulent long travelers. While there are several others, no is quite at the level at what the S-Class can offer, and especially at its price.

2020 Mercedes-Benz S Class

The S-class is longer and heavier and is far more comfortable and plush than the Porsche ever has been or probably can be. Moreover, with the dawn of the new generation just around the corner, you can rest assured that all of this will be tuned up even more.

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Vs 2021 Audi A8

The Audi A8L is for those who want to enjoy the finer things in life but not spend a fortune on it. The ride offers sleek bodylines along with a magnanimous build both inside and out. While the Porsche claims to be a dynamic rider, the Audi A8 L is a versatile saloon that offers practicality surrounded by luxury and comfort. The closest competitor in this regard is the newly available Porsche Panamera Executive trim which has a longer wheelbase and hence can offer better space inside.

2021 Audi A8

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Vs 2021 BMW 7-Series

The BMW 7-Series sits proudly as the flagship sedan offering from the Bavarian automaker. The brand which has been heralded as the pioneer in driver assistance makes sure that all of its top of the line driver tech is thrown in the 7-Series along with immense amount of comfort. Furthermore, its practical and no-nonsense approach to carmaking is still a notch above the rest. It may not be the most luxurious of the lot since Mercedes takes that title, but it certainly is the most practical. And all of that at a price that is lower than the Panamera Sport Turismo.

2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Wagon Final Verdict

The 2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is the best of both the worlds and offers high quality and reliability. It is one of the best in its class, standing out not only in its looks but also with its incredible chassis and poised handling. The safety features on offer are plenty and many more can be equipped through available packages to suit everyone’s needs.

So, if you love the Panamera to bits and want it to adorn a practical outlook, then the 2021 Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo is the one to get for all that utilitarian fun.
