2020 Porsche Panamera Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Updated on: July 10, 2020

Automotive Journalist

When Porsche wanted to enter the sedan segment there was a severe revolt from the brand loyalists to some extent reasonable. How can a sports car manufacturer suddenly start making a sedan? And what if it is not up to the mark of its “Porsche” badge. All these surrounded the development of what is now known as “Panamera”.

Overall Rating

Now, after two generations, Panamera has been accepted by the enthusiasts as well as daily drivers and has become one of the most sorted out cars in the automaker catalog. It is fun to drive and offers a lot of practicality as well which makes it a perfect choice for those who want a 911 or 718 but need something more versatile and maybe family-friendly.

Panamera is a perfect Porsche in every sense be it performance, handling or looks and feels like one. It has broadened the German automaker appeal just like its SUVs and has allowed a lot more people to enjoy its extraordinary engineering and remarkable driving dynamics.

Our Recommendation

We recommend the Panamera Base as it has all the necessary and not so necessary features as standard. You can use the money saved on the options provided by the Porsche to have what you want and not the unnecessary. There are a lot of options to choose from but here are some of our favorites-

2020 Porsche Panamera Engine and Performance

7.1/10

Porsche has over and over proved it’s mastery in designing the engine. Be it a V or a Boxer/Flat, it always comes out on top. This time the automaker decided to go with the V6 and paired that with an 8-speed shiftable automatic(paddle shifters are also available) to maximize the performance without any delay. In case 330 hp is not up to the mark one can also opt for more power in Turbo and GTS trims of Panamera.

The competition is stiff and all the vehicles are closely matched and none wants to back down. All of these manufacturers are known for their great engines and they sure prove that. The Merc has the highest horsepower and just behind is the Audi which may lack power but more than makes up with its torque.

How Fast is it?

This is a Sedan that too a luxury one so ideally one desires comfort and luxury. But those seem to be of less priority than power. With the V6 it reached naught to 60 in 5.4 seconds which is impressive but not as much as Turbo trim. That can do naught to 60 mph in just about 3.6 seconds and that is just mind-boggling considering the weight of the vehicle.

2020 Porsche Panamera Sedan covers 0-60 in just 5.4 SEC.

Beamer takes the crown home in the game titled “How fast is it? ” that too with a significant margin. Panamera and S-Class have to share second place, with Audi coming last almost a second behind BMW. As all these vehicles have V6 the acceleration is decided by the tunning of the engine and the curb weight.

How about stopping power?

Panamera needs some serious braking capabilities considering the weight and power under the hood. And trust us when we say that it has the capabilities. You feel the connection when pressing the pedals, the whole process is smooth and there is not much to complain about. Porsche didn’t compromise and has used Disc ao all four tires.

Since the data is not available comparing these vehicles with each other will not be fair. Given the capabilities each one has, we expect them to perform well in this aspect.

How well does it handle?

Porsche made its name by offering one of the best cars to drive, handling, ride quality, and Panamera is no exception in this. It offers the comfort and luxury expected in such an expensive four-door hatchback. The sedan feels hunkered down and is engaging to drive when pushed hard.

2020 Porsche Panamera Sedan offers one of the best cars to drive

The air suspension helps in body control and further enhances the ride quality. Panamera inspires confidence that it can go in the corner fast and it does. The steering is heavy and crisp and most importantly accurate. While driving it you’ll feel that this is a small car and not a 2-ton luxury saloon.

2020 Porsche Panamera Fuel Economy

6.0/10

Fuel economy goes further behind as you move upward in the ladder of engines. Panamera is heavy and has a V6 that directly impacts the numbers of miles per gallon. But if you are looking for a car that is great on gas, the automaker offers a hybrid trim which improves the fuel economy by a good amount.

The rivals are on the same boat as Porsche hence offers nothing astonishing. If you take a look at the numbers you will see three out of four have the same fuel economy(MPG combined) to show. BMW is not better and is ahead of them by only 1mpg.

2020 Porsche Panamera Interior

7.8/10

Since this is a luxury sedan then there is no shortage of beautiful and thoughtful interior options. Being a Porsche there is an extensive list of options as well to choose from, Upgrades include everything from massaging seats to leather-covered climate-control vents to a fire extinguisher.

The more common options include the likes of ventilated seats, soft-close doors, four-zone automatic climate control, and a power-operated rear sunshade. One will appreciate the sports seats with 18-way adjustability and the fact that the seating position is low you will appreciate those adjustments even more plus you get a sports car feeling.

The features you that comes standard and optional include-

  • 8-Way Power Seats -inc: front comfort seats w/8-way electric adjustment for seat height, seat angle, backrest angle and fore/aft position
  • Bucket Front Seats

  • Full Floor Console w/Covered Storage, Mini Overhead Console, Rear Console w/Storage, and 2 12V DC Power Outlets

There is no shortage of space and you feel while sitting. The interior is spacious even for taller drivers even the rear seat space is generous too and which can be further improved in longer executive models.

Infotainment

Infotainment is the heart of the Panamera from where you can control all your functions and of course listen to music. The sedan has a beautiful dash and in the center sits a 12.3-inch touchscreen, it looks attractive but is a handful to use which is a problem especially while driving. It has Apple CarPlay, navigation, and a wi-fi hotspot as standard but the menus are over complicated and Porsche could have made them a little more intuitive. Strangely, Android Auto and wireless phone charging aren’t available which is a bumper.

2020 Porsche Panamera Sedan has 12.3-inch Infotainment Screen

What about Cargo Space?

Being a sedan and of size this big it needs to be practical and one of the biggest tests of practicality is cargo space. How big is the boot? That question always comes forward whenever the functionality of a vehicle is discussed and there is a reason behind it. One doesn’t buy a luxury saloon to go to racing, they are day to day use vehicles and cargo space can be a big deal in that. But fear not as Panamera stands tall in this regard. The boot itself is big enough and the rear seats are foldable too so you have a lot of space for your luggage.

The last generation received a lot of criticism about how it looked, after which the automaker went straight to the drawing board and came up with this new design and we have to say it looks attractive from every point. There is not much to dislike apart from a few like the rear window which is too slant and can hinder in rear visibility for some people.

The front looks elegant with the typical Porsche LED headlights, the Emblem is right on the hood and looks subtle. The side of the car boasts 19-inch alloy, the body lines are beautiful and the roof melds into the boot which is just pleasant to look at. The rear of the car is a whole other story, from the 3D Porsche badging right in the center and LED taillights are just beautiful to look at. Dual chrome-tipped exhaust seals the deal. The other exterior features are-

2020 Porsche Panamera Safety

8.0/10

Being a Porsche there is no doubt about the car being safe and there is a good reason for that. the brand has proven again and again their commitment to keeping buyers safe. You can enjoy your ride to the fullest and let Panamera worry about safety.

NHTSA and IIHS have not yet rated the Panamera but considering the lineage of the brand and safety features onboard there is little to no doubt about the sedan being unsafe.

Safety Features that come standard in the 2020 Panamera-

  • Brake Assist
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control
  • Backup Camera
  • Parking Sensors
  • Alarm
  • Traction Control
  • Stability Control
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Side Airbags
  • Curtain Airbags
  • Knee Airbags

2020 Porsche Panamera Competition

Porsche Panamera vs Mercedes-Benz S Class

Merc has a lot going for it like- it has more horsepower but still offers almost the same power delivery as Porsche. It has a long wheelbase but has a similar cabin space but cargo is bigger. The features are almost the same too but Benz infotainment is one of the best where Panamera one is not even in the race. Plus it costs almost $7,000 more and has nothing to show to justify that price.

2020 Mercedes-Benz S Class

Porsche Panamera vs BMW 7-Series

BMW is closely matched with the Panamera and that becomes apparent when you look at the features, engine at least on the paper. The real world, on the other hand, is not based on the paper which is why they may have a similar engine but Beamer power delivery is better than that of Porsche. The wheelbase is longer which directly dictates that the cargo and interior are bigger. These little things make 7-Series a good choice.

2020 BMW 7-Series

Porsche Panamera vs Audi A8

This is a fight between what you are looking for in a performance sedan. Audi lacks power and the thrust when you push the accelerator. The boot size is not up to the mark as well and that affects a lot. So, considering all Panamera offers an all-round package.

2020 Audi A8

2020 Porsche Panamera Final Verdict

The choice is simple and easy since, with Porsche you can never go wrong, this has been proven time and again. So, if you are in the market looking for a luxury sedan that offers a sporty aspect in terms of performance as well, do take a look at the Panamera and it should steal your heart with its elegant yet powerful looks.

"Right from Stuggart"

Driving dynamics depend on what it reads on the driving mode that can be changed right from the steering wheel itself. Multiple modes like track oriented sports plus and safety dedicated wet mode etc, everything like throttle response, sensitivity of the safety features and handling is tuned based on what is required. Love the concept that I don't have to worry about my foot hitting the gas pedal ...

"Rework the comfort for back row"

Quite clear they have tried to give it the best upgrades for safety to improve the driveability. Would be wrong if I call it their attempt to do so a waste. They have succeeded in getting the Panamera a whole host of features which has left it with the best driveability irrespective of the type of drive. Night vision for instance, never heard of it before and I can't say if there is any other feat...
