It was the year 2003 when the Stuttgart auto-marque decided to step on the SUV bandwagon and gave its fans something to rejoice, which also compiled with the growing popularity of SUVs, the Porsche Cayenne. Come 2020, it's been 18 years since the very first Cayenne saw the light of the dawn, and is currently in its 3rd generation. While the Cayenne always had the privilege of belonging to a mighty family, Porsche furthermore spent these 18 years investing a lot of innovation in this SUV, and this fact is pretty evident in the 2020 Iteration of the Cayenne.

However, we do have a question for all the enthusiasts out there who swear by the name of Porsche. Do you really think that the Cayenne inherits the authentic traits of this German auto-marque? Well, what we think, is that with enjoyable driving experience, plush interiors, and a heavy price-tag, the Cayenne is every bit, Porsche. It might not be as intimidating as the sportscars that brand has been known for, but it sure as hell is one of the most impressive premium SUVs out there.

Overall Rating

The 2020 Porsche Cayenne is an SUV with a sports car performance. The 3.0L turbocharged engine at the heart feels powerful with a lot of punch. The Cayenne is the only SUV with diversified character, runs like a sports car, the luxury of a premium sedan and off-roading/towing ability of a full-size SUV. This third-generation Cayenne got the last redesign in 2019 and is manufactured in Slovakia. The Cayenne's base model begins at an MSRP of $66,800.

The Porsche provides ample packages and ample options to suit your best needs making Cayenne a flexible package. However, even this state of the art SUV faces some rather tough competition. The 2020 Porsche Cayenne faces some of the very popular SUVs such as the BMW X5, the Lexus RX 350 F Sport, and America's very own, the Cadillac XT5. So will the Cayenne still come out as a tempting option? Scroll down to find out.

What do we recommend?

The 2020 Porsche Cayenne comes in three trims, having standard body style, transmission, and a standard all-wheel-drive. The sole change to look out for is the different engine for more power, rest all features are available standard or optional for you to figure out. So stick with the base Cayenne and use the savings to add extra features.

2020 Porsche Cayenne Engine and Performance

9.3/10

The base Porsche Cayenne comes powered with a turbocharged 3.0L V6 engine, flaunting a modest number, producing 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. Well, that’s half the story, as the base Cayenne is capable of doing what you ask from it. The Cayenne offers an engaging drive with the engine offering abundant low-end torque, ample mid-range poweress, and a pleasant acoustic signature.

2020 Porsche Cayenne SUV Has a 3.0L V6 Turbo Engine

The engine is aided by an 8-speed automatic transmission that routes power to all the wheels, as the Cayenne offers AWD as the standard drivetrain. The upshifts and downshifts are quick and precise as the transmission panel is well-calibrated and executes the shifts with the utmost smoothness.

Speaking of the competition, well the Porsche Cayenne beats out all the other contenders in terms of the displacement figures. The Cayenne is the most powerful SUV of the with the best in class power figures. The only car that comes close to the Cayenne is the BMW X5, that puts out similar power figures. The Cadillac XT5 rakes in the third spot with 310 ponies tucked underneath its hood, finally followed by the Lexus RX350 F Sport

How fast is the Porsche Cayenne?

The Cayenne's eagerness to catapult itself forward is simply unbelievable for a car of such dimensions. The base Cayenne mill accomplishes the 0-60 mph milestone in just 5.9 seconds and the one with Sport Chrono package enhances the time to 5.3 seconds.

2020 Porsche Cayenne SUV 0-60 MPH In just 5.9 sec

A major credit of this eagerness to move forward evident in the 2020 Cayenne goes to the 332 lb.-ft. of peak torque, which kicks in as soon as 1340 rpm. The transmission arrangement inside the Cayenne is also well-calibrated and plays a major role in making this mammoth-sized SUV move forward more potently.

The BMW X5 AWD simply steals the show here with its absolutely stunning sprinting figures. The 2020 BMW X5 does a 0-60 spring in just 5.2 seconds, which is the fastest in the segment, owing to its twin-turbo setup. The Porsche Cayenne makes a chase, going from 0-60 in 5.9 seconds, followed by the Caddilac XT5 which needs 6.6 seconds in order to showcase a similar figure, and finally the Lexus RX 350.

How comfortable is a Porsche Cayenne on the road?

The Cayenne displays the intoxicating combination of confident, athletic handling with composed and luxurious ride quality. Justifying every bit of Porsche engineering, the stock Cayenne without any performance upgrades like adaptive air suspension, Dynamic chassis control, rear-axle steering, or even an oversized wheel, impresses with superior handling. Charging into curves almost instantly, and making its way out with vigor, unlike any other big SUV.

2020 Porsche Cayenne SUV Front View

The standard 19-inch wheels accompany a superior ride quality which might take a setback with bigger rollers of up to 22-inch. The available Sport Chrono package adds drive modes and improves acceleration. Also, the performance upgrades enable for a flatter cornering and improved maneuverability.

How do the brakes perform on the Cayenne SUV?

The Cayenne’s brakes can be upgraded to Porsche Surface Coated Brakes (PSCB) i.e. iron-tungsten brakes or costly carbon-ceramic rotors for better response and high fade resistance. The base Porche Cayenne gets 14.2-inch rotors on all its wheels, which can make this heavy SUV come to an absolute standstill from a speed of 70 mph in a distance of only 159 feet.

2020 Porsche Cayenne SUV Front Brake is 14.2 in.

The brake pedal feels firm and is aptly weighted to easily modulate it under city traffic conditions. However, the stroke of the pedal is a little longer than what you'd expect from a Porsche. Meanwhile, there is absolutely no hint of sway or nosedive under panic braking conditions, and the Cayenne feels planted and stable when made to come to a sudden halt

The BMW X5 gets the biggest rotors here and as a result posts the best halting figures of the class. The BMW X5 can decelerate from 60-0 in a distance of 116 feet, which is absolutely stunning for a car that weighs more than 4700 pounds. The 60-0 figures for the 2020 Cayenne are not yet available, but the fact that it can depreciate from 70-0 mph in 159 feet is respectable enough.

The 2020 Porsche Cayenne can roll for 19 miles in the city and can expedite through 23 miles on the highway for each gallon of gasoline. The Cayenne falls behind the rivaling BMW X5 and Lexus RX, earning EPA estimated ratings of 20 mpg combined. However, considering the turbocharged V6 engine under its hood, these figures seem decent if not absolutely impressive.

With the Porsche S or Turbo, the excitement bar raises to a new high and MPG rating drop further below but it is not a drawback anyway. In case better efficiency remains one of your major motivators, you can always opt for an E-Hybrid Cayenne.

2020 Porsche Cayenne Interior

7.7/10

The interior of the 2020 Porsche Cayenne got even bigger and roomier. The authentic Cayenne gives a proper sports car experience, something relatable to the 911. The Cayenne offers the same number of seats as the Macan but the increased wheelbase provides ample room with easy slide in and out. The front seats coddle you with all-round support with eight-way power adjustments.

Porsche Cayenne's cabin is a canvas, open to be crafted as per the taste and requirements of the owner. The list goes end-less with almost every customization option. There are available plush wood or carbon-fiber interior, but believe us the stock cabin is equally intriguing.

The cockpit controls give a high-quality feel, as most of the surfaces are covered in the finest quality materials. Apart from the form, the cabin of the 2020 Cayenne is also highly functional, with a driver-centric approach,  however, some of the buttons are awkwardly placed behind the gearbox but anyways those are redundant as most of the major controls that you'll need while driving are mounted on the steering wheel.

What about the infotainment and automation technology in Porsche Cayenne?

The poster of Cayenne with the redesigned infotainment will be the highlight. The infotainment system features a 12.3-inch wide touchscreen placed in the middle of the dashboard. The centerpiece features one of the best interfaces in the class, slick enough to offer a highly configurable home menu and many personalized settings. The instrument cluster features multiple displays and touch-capacitive controls are both attractive and impressively simple to figure out.

2020 Porsche Cayenne SUV Has a 12.3-inch Touchscreen Display

Every Cayenne features Porsche Connect Plus, imparting a 4G LTE mobile Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple Carplay compatibility, though Android Auto is still missing. The audio system suffices the purpose but for audiophiles, an upgrade to Bose or Burmester audio speakers is available. The 2020 Porsche Cayenne also features a voice recognition feature, but it seems a bit lousy though.

Key Infotainment Features:

  • Online Navigation Module
  • Bluetooth
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • USB and Aux-in
  • Steering Wheel Controls
  • Voice Activation
  • Radio Data System
  • CD/DVD-Audio
  • 40 Gb Internal Memory

How much cargo space is on offer in the Porsche Cayenne?

The Porsche Cayenne fulfills the daily storage needs but offers a lower storage capacity than most of the rivals in the segment. The Cayenne is the largest Porsche SUV with the rear cargo space of 27 cubic feet and with the 40/20/40-split rear seats folded there is more than 60 cubic feet of cargo space at your disposal. Furthermore, the shape of the trunk enables better storage than what the numbers reflect.

2020 Porsche Cayenne Exterior

8.9/10

The third-generation Cayenne flaunts an aggressive layout, that is no less in any way from the higher Cayenne trims. The 2019 redesign took inspiration from the Panamera and 911, for good. The base Cayenne ditched almost all the grim exterior traits, replacing them with attractive front-fascia flaunting horizontal intakes. The rear flaunts a 911 like light strip tying the two lamps and also serving home to new “Porsche” badging.

2020 Porsche Cayenne SUV Three Quarter View

The Porsche styling tweak did not take away the authentic Cayenne shape, it’s just got bigger and curvier than the before. Though the interior of the 2020 Porsche Cayenne receives gutsy changes, the exterior remains uniform, maintaining its originality of 2002.

The Cayenne rides high and its 8.3 inches of ground clearance ensure that the car glides over potholes on road and hindrances off road.

9.0/10

The Porsche has equipped the Cayenne with a number of standard safety features like front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The advanced active driver-assistance technology comes at a cost with premium package which includes adaptive headlights, blind-spot monitoring, a surround-view parking camera system, a head-up display, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, night vision assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.

As for crash testing, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has crashed the Cayenne, mostly the case with luxury and premium vehicles.

Key Safety Features include:

  • Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology

Porsche Cayenne Vs Lexus RX 350 F-Sport

The Porsche engineered vehicles clearly demarcate themselves with an extraordinary performance for an inspiring driving experience aided by utmost luxury and convenience, so is the Cayenne. The price to own the luxury crossover SUV is high but that is what actually characterizes Porches. The Lexus RX 350 F-Sport, on the other hand, is a safe and reliable option that offers an intriguing ride in a plush cabin, all ribboned with a considerable road presence, and that too at a price that is much more economical than the Cayenne. Though the performance on offer in the RX 350 F Sport is not as enticing as the Cayenne, still it justifies its price tag.

2020 Lexus RX 350 F-Sport

Porsche Cayenne Vs BMW X5

The BMW X5 base starts at $61,200, about $5000 cheaper than the Porsche Cayenne for similar powertrain configurations. The Cayenne and X5 both are spacious and are pretty evenly matched but the Cayenne takes the edge in terms of opulence with its premium genuine leather upholstery and a truly plush cabin. The X5, on the other hand, takes a more performance-oriented approach, showcasing better acceleration, ride and handling, off-roading ability, and better fuel efficiency.

2020 BMW X5 SUV

 Porsche Cayenne Vs Cadillac XT5

The Cadillac XT5 is cheaper, lighter and slimmer than the Porsche Cayenne. The Cadillac is neither powerful enough for a peppy ride nor efficient for a family or daily driving. The Cadillac offers a better cargo space but trails in almost every department, be it performance, luxury or athletic driving dynamics. Cadillac needs a lot of hard work to match the class of Porsche.

2020 Cadillac XT5 SUV

2020 Porsche Cayenne Final Verdict

8.2/10

The 2020 Porsche Cayenne offers a thrilling driving experience with an opulent interior, comfortable seating and advanced luxury features. However, it’s hard for a Cayenne to qualify as a value package. For its price, there are rivals available but none are well-rounded. Also, the performance of Porsche is unrivaled and the cost seems justified considering the drivability and a solid built of the Cayenne.
