We will advise you to go for the GT4 model as it is more track-focused and costs just a bit more than what the spyder version retails. Porsche 718 Cayman is a completely new breed of mid-range sports cars which comes as ultimate package for both track and road usage. The dynamic design and performance optimization from the new 4.0-liter naturally aspirated engine gives this rather humble two-seater a monstrous character that is unleashed only when sports mode is activated via drive select.

Gone are the days when Cayman was considered a mediocre competitor in the performance cars world. Porsche went all Frankenstein with the new generation and plonked in a new 4.0-liter naturally aspirated engine borrowed from the 911 GT3.

Power figures are now flying north of 400 horsepower cartel as the new 6-cylinder engine is a very high revving unit and likes to be kept in the high-end range most of the time, that is why the peak performance of 414 hp comes in 7200 rpm mark. To keep the fun at the brim in this overall complete package is a special 6-speed manual transmission that uses a 0.40-inch shorter shifter to select in the right gear.

Among the competition Porsche keeps the pace high with the placement of the engine in the mid position which gives it a perfect 50-50 weight balance ratio. The construction of the horizontal 6-cylinder engine allows in to be perfectly fitted into the low slung chassis which further enhances the track capabilities with a low center of gravity. 

Acceleration

Just like any other 911 track car, this not so baby Porsche also sprints off the line for a target of 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds which is similar to what the previous generation used to offer, but here is the fun part- 7 minutes and 28seconds these numbers are the official lap timing of the new 718 Cayman on the legendary Nurburgring Nordschleife race track which makes it around 13 seconds faster than its previous generation (that’s a huge leap in terms of performance).

Competitors of new 718 Cayman are faster in terms of accelerating off the line due to bigger V8 engines under the hood which produces power figures upward of 500 hp which is essentially a lot more than what the Porsche produces. Despite the engine size, Porsche is just a nick behind the others thanks to the dynamic design geometry and lightweight boxer engine. Being a naturally aspirated unit, a power surge is linear throughout the power band which helps it accelerate off the line faster. 

Ride and Handling

As the name suggests, GT badging is given to the most hardcore track-focused models of the Porsche lineup which sacrifice the comforts of the regular models depending on the requirement of the owner. The new 718 cayman competes with all the regular bits and bobs in the place along with the regular luxuries in their respective places. Under the chassis is the main play area where all the magic happens. The new 4.0-liter naturally aspirated horizontal engine is borrowed from 911 GT3 which gives it a completely new character in driving down the road or track.

Put the car into the track mode and feel the steering response getting more crazier and active as the dampers get stiffer and the exhaust note gets deeper with the opening of the valves. The car becomes like a sharp weapon that can cut through any obstacle, similarly 718 Cayman GT4 cuts in through the slaloms and corners like a complete track-focused car. 

Braking

With power comes responsibility and Porsche knows this very well, that is why they have provided the new 718 Cayman GT4 with carbon-ceramic disc brakes which makes the car come to a complete halt in a matter of seconds. These optional carbon-ceramic brakes are as big as alloy wheel of any small hatchback which produces a relatively higher rate of braking energy as compared to standard steel rotors with less heat and brake dust of course.

2020 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Interior

As expected from a sports car, the interiors of the new 718 Cayman are also inspired by a race-going track car with racing bucket seats in the front wrapped in leather and Alcantara. The low slung driving position is best for track days and does not hinder any of the outside vision. The front windshield is wide and gives a very clear view of what lies ahead.

Seating and Comfort

The driver-oriented cockpit makes the ride even more engaging for the driver, with a sport steering wheel with column-mounted shift paddles and controls for the audio and cruise control. The seats, as expected of a sports coupe have excellent bolstering and support to keep you in place through the corners. With enough headroom for the tallest occupants, the low roofline doesn't hinder practicality.

 The seats are very comfortable and offer a good amount of lumbar and thigh support to the occupants which are very important for a stress-free ride on long interstate highways. All the competition of the 718 Cayman GT4 is a strict two-seater except the BMW M4 CS which offers comfortable seating for four people.

The new 718 Cayman GT4 looks similar to its predecessor in terms of styling and bodyline. The front fascia has a similar outlook to it as the previous generation Cayman GT4. front angle of the new 718 Cayman gives a very aggressive look contemplated with the new LED headlights. There is no change in the exterior dimensions of the new 718 Cayman.

The cayman 718 in its latest iteration is a perfect sports car perfected further. It’s a tech-laden masterpiece that is capable of performing extraordinary tasks that were never thought possible in a performance car of this nature before, i.e being used as a civilized daily driver. The flat 6 under the shell is quite capable of pondering around town, giving out good gas milage and cocooning its occupants in the luxury of a leather laid cockpit with a tone of goodies to keep you entertained over long journeys.
