Porsche has done the unthinkable. They have gone with a mid-engine sports car. Finally!. The 718 Cayman Coupe is powered by a potent 2.0Liter turbocharged flat-four which pumps out 300 horsepower and 282 pound-feet of torque. The power is put down at the rear wheels via a 6-Speed Manual transmission. A competitive price tag of $57,500 makes it blow the competition off the shelf for the value of performance it provides.

Now following a saga of 911, which brought Porsche where it is today. Now with the 718, people do expect a lot, and if it doesn’t stand up to it, then it’s a complete disaster.

The new 718 Cayman coupe from Porsche is going to go up against its sibling Audi TTS, close competitor Toyota GR Supra, and the segment-leading BMW 440i Coupe. Well, that is until now! Now with the 718 Cayman coming into the picture, Things have taken a turn for the better. So without further ado, let’s dive right in and see if the car is ready to be relevant in today’s age and time.

The 2020 718 Cayman Coupe comes with a host of customization options that are not available as standard and you can add them only via customizations. So, if you are going to make this a daily driver, make sure to check out the personalization options available to make it an elite statement vehicle.

Our Recommendation

We would whole-heartedly vouch for the base trim as it offers you with all the features that are needed, and one other reason being for not opting for the Cayman T is because it does not offer that much of a variation in the feature list for that huge bump in price. With the addition of a Sports exhaust system to give you the ultimate chill while driving all the while backed with heated and ventilated steering wheel and seats, the Cayman base trim would be our go-to trim.

2020 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe Engine and Performance

9.9/10

The 2020 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe is powered by a potent 2.0-Liter turbocharged flat-4 engine that produces a healthy 300 horses and 282 lb-ft of torque. The Porsche Cayman Coupe comes in a 6-speed manual setup, just the way it should have been from the start, as the driving dynamics highly complement it.

Although the flat-four engine is an efficient one, the engine noise that creeps into the cabin while going at high speeds is pretty annoying. You may be wondering, what does Porsche have to do with a tiny 2.0L engine, which nowadays is also seen in hot hatches. But none of them manage to excite you the way Porsche does and none of them feel as linear and crisp as compared to the 718.

The car is on par with most of its competition in its segment with the same 2.0L engine and close to 300 horsepower figures as the rest. The Porsche 718 cayman coupe trumps out its competition with its trademark overperforming characteristics.

How fast does it go?

So, how much power is needed to get the 3-tonne mammoth to get to 60mph? Equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged flat-four, the car is mind-numbingly fast and agile. The Cayman T packed with the Sports Chrono package is much quicker than the base model. Although it is much slower than the Toyota GR Supra at the start but zooms past it after 60 MPH to pass the quarter-mile mark in a quoted 12.0 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than the Supra, which in Sportscar terms is a lot.

Porsche claims a top track speed of 170 mph for the 2020 Cayman Coupe which is more than what most people need and far more than what some people can handle on the road. Nevertheless, the car lags in giving the immediate thrust. The BMW 440i on the other hand with a much larger engine has the slowest acceleration figures of the lot.

What about the Stopping power?

Porsche has equipped the entire Cayman Coupe range with the best-in-the-business Brembo Ceramic Coated brake calipers. The brakes are larger than ever before with 13.0-inches in the front and 11.8-inches in the back. It is a true feat to bring this 3-tonne car to a halt, and Porsche does it the best. All thanks to its competitive brakes, the car comes to a complete halt in 99.8 ft. BMW’s heftier curb weight along with the smaller rotor discs makes the car’s braking prowess quite sluggish.

The brake pedal is ergonomic and provides proper feedback for the pressure you apply. There is minimal nosedive due to the well-balanced structure of the car. Supra with a lower curb weight and the largest rotor discs of the lot also achieves a competitive stopping distance of 106 ft.

How well does it Handle?

Major credit to the Cayman’s mid-engine layout and optional sticky summer tires, which provide the coupe with stunning balance and stable conditions on twisty winding roads.

Porsche has mastered the art of providing an enthralling driving experience. With rear-wheel steering as standard, the car provides no-nonsense in-control drivability. Porsche has been lauded for being one of the most agile sports cars on the planet. The electronic steering wheel is not as intuitive as the traditional wheel but is not that bad either.

2020 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe Front View

If you are someone who prefers bursts of performance even in your daily driving spree, then make sure to get an upgrade to Sports Chrono Package which will set you back around a couple of 1000 bucks. Oversteering the car is not at all a problem and the Coupe does an amazing job at exhibiting that every time you need it to. The love that goes into making this car can be seen all across during the driving.

2020 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe Fuel Economy

7.0/10

When you consider the Porsche and compare it against the competition, the 718 cayman coupe offers a decent fuel economy. The best part is that it achieves this fuel economy without any setback in the performance figures. A spirited driving might shave off a few numbers of the total but still remains competitive enough to be at par with the others.

The 2020 Toyota GR Supra has one of the best fuel economies in the city and on the highway in contrast to its competitors. Audi TTS is one that manages to close the gap with the Supra. The other six-cylinder BMW 440i in the set only gives a combined 21 miles to the gallon.

2020 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe Interior

9.0/10

Inside both cars, the 718 stands true to its traditional roots and provides us with Alcantra stitching everywhere. Fully bucket seats or 18-way power-operated seats are optional. The interior remains largely unchanged for quite a while now. Although there isn’t anything wrong with it, it does seem to feel dated at times. The typical German build quality is unmatched for. The seat options come with good bolstered support and heating and ventilation functions for you to enjoy a nice chilly ride.

Getting into the back of the Audi TTS makes no sense, as it is too cramped up, to seat up 2 people into the rear, all thanks to its sloping roofline. The bimmer, on the other hand, has the best rear cabin space of the lot. On coming to the front cabin space, The Porsche comes up a little short in the legroom and headroom department.

The roof is perfectly spaced from average height passengers but tall people over 6 feet might find a bit of an issue.

The features that adorn the interiors are:

  • Climate control with integrated active carbon filter
  • Continuously adjustable blower with defroster and recirculation settings
  • Sports seats Plus with electric adjustment of backrest angle
  • Sport-Tex seat centers
  • Park-Assist(front and rear) with reversing camera
  • on-Board computer
  • Floor mats
  • Sport Chrono stopwatch on the dashboard
  • Porsche Communication Management(POM)
  • Sirius XM Satellite Radio
  • Sound Package Plus sound system featuring 8 speakers and 150 Watt output

Investing in the 2020 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe, you can rest assured that the car will turn heads and make a statement when you arrive.

Infotainment System

Infotainment setups or screens are not something that can be associated with Porsche, as they come equipped with a 7-inch infotainment screen, which is considerably smaller than what the competitors are offering. The features that come with the infotainment screen are not so impressive either, which when you look at it with a subjective point of view, is a good thing, as the sole purpose of driving such a car, should be to exploit its performance and engine prowess to the best of your abilities, without having to lose your focus.

2020 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe has 7-inch infotainment Screen

Nevertheless, for people who really need an infotainment system, you get certain basic features such as HD Radio, Bluetooth, navigation, WIFI, Apple CarPlay, but no Android Auto. For a grater and immersive audio experience, you also get eight speakers as standard, while a 12-speaker Burmester system can also be added on as a personalization option.

What about Cargo Space?

What was missing in the 911, Porsche has made up for it in the 718 Cayman models. It was considerably lagging earlier as it had a rear-engined layout. Now with the introduction of a mid-size engine layout, you get a whole lot of freed up space. The 14.9 cu. ft of cargo space might not be the best in the said segment nor the worst in the segment. Keeping in mind, that this car was designed for pleasure rather than practicality, fitting in a pair of small bags is more than generous for such a car.

Not everyone might like the new 718’s styling. It is either a hit or a miss. There is no in-between for these types of cars. Having said that, the 718 packs a suave look just like its elder brother 911. You can’t go wrong with those massive 19-inches. It gives the car a low and wide stance. It has the most perfect proportions ever seen with sharper lines, revised front bumper and bigger side intakes. Both the models, the cayman and the cayman GT4 get updated looks, with an air outlet in front of the front tank and tinted taillights. The 718 also comes with a unique automatically extending spoiler in the back. Porsche’s roofline is a sight to fathom, with those long sloping rooflines, it adds a completely different dimension to the car.

The Cayman 718 is extremely lightweight compared to its rivals, with the bimmer being the heaviest of the lot. The Toyota GR Supra is also the shortest being strictly a 2-seater, but in terms of width, it surpasses the rest by quite a margin, enhancing its stability. Porsche’s can easily ride atop 20-inch wheels thanks to its humongous wheel arches.

There are also various other features that the car comes equipped with. Porsche offers a full customization program to upgrade and update your Cayman Coupe to match your needs and requirements that you might ever need from the car. A word of caution, only go for these customization options, if only you need it, or else it shoots up the price a lot.

2020 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe Safety

8.0/10

One thing that is to be made clear, is that the 718 Cayman is not a grocery and family hauler. Although, the car is engineered with survivability being a major design objective. Given the premium price you are paying for the car, you can expect certain advanced safety features that are standard for the car. Apart from that, the ones that are absent from the car can be added during the personalization stage. Porsche has made sure to offer you a safe and reliable experience every time you step inside the car.

The standard safety features that the 718 Cayman Coupe offers are:

  • Anti-theft system with engine immobilizer and alarm system with radar-based surveillance of the cabin.
  • Front and rear deformation zones
  • Side-guard door beams
  • Dual front advanced airbags including knee airbags for driver and front passenger
  • Seat belt pretensioners and load limiters
  • Porsche Side Impact Protection System(POSIP) for driver and front passengers with side impact protection elements.

While there are a few optional features that should be picked up, there are some features you can probably live without comfortably as the car comes with many features as standard.

Safety Ratings

The Porsche Cayman Coupe has not been tested by the government safety organizations such as the NHTSA or the IIHS for the 2020 model year, as it was too soon for the 718 Cayman Coupe to go through a wall to test its safety prowess.

Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe vs BMW 440i

To compete with the 2020 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe, BMW has the 2020 440i With a bigger engine, but not so good performance figures, the car is much heavier than the Porsche. The BMW’s 3.0L inline-6 engine makes the 440i an absolute bliss to drive, while the Porsche’s tiny 718 Cayman is much more stable and composed through fast corners. The steering, throttle, and brakes are fined tuned for the performance convertible and much more precise than the BMW.

2020 BMW 440i

Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe vs Toyota GR Supra

Another fighter for supremacy in this segment is the Toyota GR Supra which sits at the top of the table currently. A mind-bogglingly powerful engine, marginally bigger cargo and a decent stopping distance, the Toyota GR Supra barely makes it over the Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe. Although the Supra doesn’t have the driving enthusiasm found in the 718 Cayman Coupe. We would take the Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe over the Toyota Supra any day for the much better and well-rounded package it provides.

2020 Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe Final Verdict

8.6/10

Svelte design, German performance, and dominating presence, the traits that perfectly define the Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe. The car holds its own in an all-out competition from its siblings and segment contenders alike and gives them a run for their money. The 718 might not have the charm or the pedigree that the 911 used to hold. So, the 2020 Porsche Cayman 718 is a perfect sports coupe for you and you will enjoy it every bit with the exceptional driving dynamics it provides.
