The NV200 is a entry-level cargo van which slots below the full-size Nissan NV1500, NV2500 and NV3500 cargo vans. The 2020 NV200 is a commercial van but is much smaller front-wheel-drive. The four-cylinder setup is efficient and economical for small business or fleet operators with not much space needed. The inexpensive compact cargo van which is light on pocket and does its intended job is best exemplified by the 2020 Nissan NV200.

Overall Rating

The new NV200 Compact Cargo is a capable hauler, great for tight corners and tight budget alike. Nissan claims NV200 to feature the largest display screen with a size of 7”. The 2020 Nissan NV200 recieves a lot more standard features than the predecessors. The NV200 is a long-lasting commercial cargo van, thanks to the best commercial-van powertrain warranty, good for five years/or 10,000 miles.

The front-wheel NV200 is a an inexpensive option with limited usability. Competition good minivans features a long list of rivals from automakers all-across the world. However, the likes of Mercedes-Benz Metris, Ford Transit and Ram Promaster City presents exclusive appeal to suit individual needs.

The marginal increase in the price fetches you power-adjustable heated side-view mirrors, remote keyless entry, cruise control with steering-wheel-mounted controls, an additional 12-volt PowerPoint in the rear of the center console, body-colored rear bumper, body-colored side view mirrors, and rear license plate finisher, full wheel covers, and a chrome grille.

2020 Nissan NV200 Engine and Performance

5.0/10

The 2020 Nissan NV200 compact cargo van roots from its passenger car counterpart. The NV200 uses an economical 2.0L inline-4 engine pumping 131 hp. Surely, the NV200 feels underpowered for heavy-duty applications. However, if you are looking for city-wide delivery or short-distance cargo transfers, NV200 is a potent minivan that doesn’t hole your pocket.

Smallest of the lot, 2020 NV200 is the best entry-level cargo carrier for people on budget or utility likewise. The Nissan NV200 is the only minivan using a continuous-variable transmission. The CVT is significant for a smooth and economic drive, trading-off with the acceleration and eagerness.

The alternative minivans in the market offer much better grunt and are more suitable for heavy-duty assignments. The likes of Merc Metris, Ford transit with a similar four-cylinder engine churns out better energy in the forward-wheel-drive configuration. However, the rear driving dynamics are offered by the RAM Promaster.

How quick is the Nissan NV200?

The 131 hp and 139 lb-ft are a decent spec on the sheet for a city dweller. Being a cargo van, NV200 presents itself with a lethargic acceleration which limits the utility. The transmission duties are handled by the CVT, strengthens NV200 to be economical and smooth drive.

The hauler need not be roaring emotions but quietly obedient and reliable. Nissan does a good job of optimizing the mill under the hood to be just sufficient, targeting a targeted audience. The Merc hauler- Metris use the low-band torque and pulls the loaded minivan without any distress.

How comfortably does the NV200 take you around the city?

The 2020 NV200 maybe a minivan but offer driving dynamics of a car, it is remarkably easy-to-drive. NV200 has an overall small size, car-like suspension, and tight turning radius: 36.7 feet, this van can easily handle tight streets and parking spaces which larger vans or SUV can not.

2020 Nissan NV200 Cargo Van rear view

The minivan is stable through the corners provided you are driving at low city speeds, however, reaching highway limits is difficult. The comfort isn’t like a passenger car but feels comfortable. The Nissan NV200 is equipped with electric power steering which offers direct feedback and optimally weighted.

How good is the braking performance?

The 2020 NV200 is equipped with a vented disc at the front and drum brakes at the rear. Nissan makes the braking performance much more reliable in NV200 with the use of an anti-lock braking system supplemented by the electronic brake force distribution system.

The brake pedal feels firm and results in linear braking. Also, the small size of the NV200 allows for adequate braking performance even while running on full-load. Powerful counterparts use higher rotor size brakes for superior braking performance as with higher power the load heft also enhances.

What about the Towing and Payload capacity of 2020 NV200?

The 2020 Nissan NV200 has a maximum payload capacity of just 1480 lbs, need not be surprised. Being so small and with only 131 horsepower such low payload capacity is expected.

Most of the direct rivals are abler and can haul more weight. In fact, the larger Mercedes Metris can tow a maximum of 5000lbs and offers a payload capacity of almost 1000 lbs more than NV200. Further, the Ford Transit offers a similar payload capacity to NV200 but better towing figures. So far, Merc is best in class but expensive at the same time.

2020 Nissan NV200 Fuel Economy

6.0/10

The low power figures and use of CVT make the NV200 generous with top-notch fuel economy. The EPA ratings of Nissan NV200 are pretty average for this class but comes as a boon for the owner as it doesn’t ask for too much.

The more powerful Ford Transit and Ram Promaster showcase better EPA ratings than Nissan NV200 on the highway. However, the master of class, Merc Metris offers an 18.5-liter fuel tank to accomplish the task assigned with a minimum number of stops at the gas station.

2020 Nissan NV200 Interior

5.0/10

With an overall length of 186.3-inch and a wheelbase of 115.2, the Nissan NV200 is one of the smallest minivans in the market. Only behind the smaller wheelbase version of Ford Transit. The two-seater NV200 is comfortable at the front with adequate space for the driver. The Nissan NV200 compact cargo has sliding doors on both sides.

2020 Nissan NV200 Cargo Van front seats

The slide doors offer a low step-in height and in case of bulkier items, forklift at the rear is a great help. Also, to be forklift friendly NV200 has squared-off corners at the rear opening. The interior comfort is average for the class. The use of cloth upholstery and simple dashboard makes it a monotonous daily hauler. However, one feature that fetches our attention is the flexibility and versatility of the passenger seats. The seats fold down to mimic a table, it depends on you if you use it as a worktop, lunch table or extend the cargo space for hauling some long items.

How is the infotainment system in Nissan NV200?

Need not expect the NV200 to be tech-laden. The sole purpose of the NV200 keeps the entertainment and multimedia options limited to need rather than exotic desires. Nissan, however, brings a lot of standard features in 2020 NV200 for added convenience and entertainment.

2020 Nissan NV200 Cargo Van has 7.0 in. infotainment screen

The standard infotainment features include a 7.0-inch color touchscreen supported by the Apple car play and Android Auto compatibility. Bluetooth connectivity and SiriusXM satellite radio have also been standard now. For charging or wired-connectivity, a single USB port is available in the center console. Nissan connects the infotainment system that can be accessed via the touchscreen or the voice recognition system. For the class as well, Nissan NV200 feels lightly loaded on this front.

Key infotainment features

  • NissanConnect 7” touch-screen display
  • Apple Carplay and Android Auto Compatibility
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • AM/FM/CD Audio System
  • One USB port and Auxillary input jack

How capacious is the Cargo of NV200?

The compact cargo van from Nissan features two easy-sliding doors with low step-in height and a wide-opening 40/60 split rear door. The door on the left is shorter to reduce the space required on the street when open completely. The cargo capacity of 2020 Nissan NV200 is pretty average.

The cargo access and management are great in the NV200. The flat and wide cargo floor makes use of every inch of available space, including the full-width:54.8”. The squared-off interior wheel arches not only expands the available space but also makes it easy to stack boxes or slide in a pallet. Also, the 12 integrated tie-downs across the cargo area help secure heavier objects. The floor-mounted D-rings fold flat when not in use.

4.0/10

2020 NV200 is constructed with compact body dimensions, boon, and bane at the same time. The tight turning radius and nimble handling allow NV200 to negotiate tight and narrow spaces with ease. At the same time, the average cargo space limits the utility.

2020 Nissan NV200 Cargo Van three quarter view

Visually, the bulk of the 2020 Nissan NV200 lineup remains the same. It is only the base S trim which drops the basic front black bumper in favor of a body-colored alternative. The work-first van will look a bit sleeker with this small change. Further, the NV200 rides atop 15-inch steel wheels.

2020 Nissan NV200 Safety

5.0/10

Nissan usually does a good job of equipping its new cars and SUVs with a wide range of active and passive safety features but the 2020 NV200 doesn’t cater much. The 2020 NV200, unfortunately, misses out on driver-assistance technology, maybe it is the inexpensive price tag.

Across both the models, NV200 features a basic Airbag system at the front and side curtains along with the advanced braking ABS system. The only high-tech features coming standard includes the tire-pressure monitoring system and electronic stability control. In this regard, the 2020 Nissan NV200 lags behind its competition. Also, none of the federal safety rating agencies have rated the NV200 for its crashworthiness.

Key safety features

  • Six Airbags
  • Steering Wheel Lock
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Break-away engine mounts
  • Vehicle Security system with Alarm

2020 Nissan NV200 Competition

Nissan NV200 S Minivan Vs Ford Transit Connect Cargo Van

The NV200 is a less expensive compact cargo hauler than Ford Transit. The inexpensive attitude, however, limits the utility in terms of average cargo space. The longer wheelbase Ford Transit is better than the smaller variant as it enhances the cargo space. Also, less payload capacity of NV200 comes in the way. If you are looking for an entry-level city hauler with limited utility, NV200 is the cheapest available option.

2020 Ford Transit Connect Cargo Van

Nissan NV200 S Minivan Vs Mercedes-Benz Metris

If it is about more, Merc Metris offers more power, more space, more payload, and towing capacity, and more cost as well. The more results in the sub-par fuel economy of Merc Metris than NV200. The 2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris is the most capable and refined compact cargo van in the segment. If you are looking for a lower price and better fuel economy, NV200 is the best fit.

2020 Mercedes-Benz Metris

Nissan NV200 S Minivan Vs Ram Promaster City

Ram Promaster City costs a bit higher than the NV200 but accommodates more cargo with a higher payload rating. Although the combined fuel economy ratings of both are nearly the same. The Ram Promaster is better on the highway while the Nissan NV200 consumes less fuel in the city.

2020 Ram Promaster City

2020 Nissan NV200 Final Verdict

The 2020 Nissan NV200 gets some subtle but welcome enhancements. The enticing part of the NV200 is its low initial cost and a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine which doesn’t put an extra burden on the pocket. Other than this, NV200 provides a good balance of cargo space and maneuverability in tight city streets. On safety and technology front, NV200 comes out ill-equipped than most of its rivals. For small business owners or people looking to haul gear win and around the city might do well to consider 2020 NV200.
