Expert Review

7.5

Overall Rating

Other notable features include modern equipment like touchscreen infotainment unit and multi-adjustable front seats. The choice of V6 or V8 engines and five-speed or seven-speed automatic gearboxes further pushes this Nissan’s practicality. What this Nissan does not get though is the kind of price tag as its other competitors.

Both the Ford Transit Cargo Van and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter are more expensive than the Nissan NV Cargo. For their price this Nissan can be equipped with the more potent 5.6-liter V8 which makes it undermine both the Ford and Merc. So overall the Nissan NV Cargo does what a multi-utility vehicle should do.

2020 Nissan NV Cargo Features

5.0/10

For the year 2020, the Nissan NV Cargo is available in three variants. There’s the base S, a mid-tier SL, and a top-shelf SV offered exclusively with the NV Cargo 3500 HD. All come standard with rear-wheel drivetrain with no available option of an all-wheel-drive unit. There are, however, other mechanical options to choose from. The less expensive variants of the Nissan NV Cargo get a 4.0-liter V6 which is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission.

Otherwise, the Nissan NV Cargo 3500 HD gets a 5.6-liter V8 under its hood and a seven-speed automatic gearbox. All mechanical differences aside, standard on the 2020 Nissan NV Cargo is a seven-inch infotainment unit that besides Bluetooth connectivity also offers ports for USB and aux. So regardless of the choice of powertrain and transmission option, all Nissan NV Cargos are fairly appealing for its class.

We recommend

Not that the V6 powered NV Cargo is not worth consideration just that the Nissan 3500 HD’s V8 makes it a lot more capable and somewhat more engaging. Also for a starting price of under $35,000, the NV Cargo 3500 HD offers a much higher value for the money it charges.

2020 Nissan NV Cargo Engine and Performance

9.0/10

Standard on the Nissan NV Cargo 1500 and 2500 is a gasoline-powered 4.0-liter V6 churning 261 hp and 281 lb.-ft. torque. A five-speed automatic unit paired to this V6 sends power to the rear two-wheels of this Nissan. The five-speed gearbox and rear-wheel drivetrain are stand-alone options on the 1500 and2500 Nissan NV Cargo.

The top-level Nissan 3500 HD NV Cargo packs a lot more muscle. Under its hood lies a 5.6-liter V8 releasing 375 hp and 387 lb.-ft. torque. Though a rear-wheel drive unit is the only choice of drivetrain option on this Nissan NV Cargo too, a seven-speed automatic transmission channels the engine’s power to them. Together the V8 and seven-speed automatic significantly enhance this Nissan’s capabilities.

Even with the base 4.0-liter V6, the Nissan NV Cargo manages to fare well against the competition. Its other 5.6-liter V8 simply overshadows them all. At 188 hp, however, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter’s 2.0-liter turbo-four is the smallest capacity engine in this lineup while the 4.3-liter V6 of the GMC Savana Cargo is the most potent.

How fast is the Nissan NV Cargo?

A cargo van isn’t meant to create chaos on a racetrack. The sheer design and dimension won’t allow you to do so, and the Nissan NV Cargo is no exception. Sure it gets a V6 powertrain but that is there for different purposes entirely. Even the bigger capacity V8, though more smashing, isn’t exactly eager.

2020 Nissan NV Cargo Van hits 0-60 MPH in just 9.6 sec.

That doesn’t, however, mean that the Nissan NV Cargo is a slouch. It picks up speed quite comfortably and is able to deliver what is expected out of it. Both the five-speed and seven-speed automatics are smooth-shifting and adeptly power the rear wheels.

The Ford Transit Cargo Van and GMC Savana Cargo are two of the most powerful utility vans in this segment. Consequently, they are also the quickest. On the other hand, the least powerful Mercedes-Benz Sprinter takes the longest to reach the 60 mph mark and is also the last to finish the quarter mile.

What about the braking performance of the Nissan NV Cargo?

For such a heavy vehicle, the Nissan NV Cargo has been fitted with brakes to match. They are smart enough to realise the weight of this van and bite down accordingly. Although it is highly recommended that you make sure not to go down too hard on the pedal in a hurry as that will leave you gasping for breath.

The Nissan NV Cargo is the heaviest van in this segment. Accordingly, its brakes are also the largest. They do well to shed the speed of this van. Other vans in this segment are not quite as well equipped as this Nissan.

What about its driving dynamics?

The Nissan NV Cargo Van is in no way meant to satisfy the enthusiast in you. It is heavy, boxy and quite long. None of these factors help either with agility or performance. Still this Nissan van handles relatively well for a van. Thanks to elements borrowed from its pick-up sibling Titan, the NV Cargo is quite manageable if not enticing.

2020 Nissan NV Cargo front view

The steering wheel is a bit light for such a stocky vehicle and the suspension also seems floaty but load it up to the brim and this Nissan really shines through. Both V6 and V8 engines return the kind of response to allow you to comfortably carry your load around but expect no more. The 2020 Nissan NV Cargo is meant strictly for city roads.

2020 Nissan NV Cargo Fuel Economy

6.0/10

Commercial vehicles like the Nissan NV Cargo aren’t tested by the EPA for their MPG ratings. So there’s no official information on how fuel efficient this van is exactly. What is known though from real world experiences is that this Nissan van is most efficient when paired to the V6 which is only natural.

The real factor deciding a van’s efficiency is the size of its fuel tank and that is where the Nissan NV Cargo also impresses. Most other vans in this segment get lower capacity fuel tanks than the Nissan NV Cargo.

2020 Nissan NV Cargo Interior

9.9/10

While buying a van you know one thing for sure that there is not going to be any shortage of space. That is exactly the case with the Nissan NV Cargo. It comes with two seats from the factory that are quite comfortable and also offer decent support.

2020 Nissan NV Cargo Van front seats

Even the cabin features contemporary styling. Sure the use of hard plastics can be a bit off putting but this is no half a million dollar European sedan. Other than that the controls are logically placed for ease of use too. In all, the Nissan NV cargo’s cabin has been well-built for its purpose and price.

All vans in this segment can seat only two people ideally. That way the Nissan NV Cargo offers best in class accommodation. No other van in this segment offers the kind of head or legroom as the Nissan NV Cargo.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

Standard on the Nissan NV Cargo is a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with bare-minimum features. It is easy to operate and returns sufficient response but is not very well equipped.

2020 Nissan NV Cargo Van infotainment screen

The list of features include:

  • Bluetooth
  • Hands-free text-messaging
  • AM/FM

Creature comforts on offer in the Nissan NV Cargo

Besides a roomy well-laid out cabin and comfortable seats, the Nissan NV Cargo brings along with itself comfort features like:

  • Multi-functional trip computer
  • Air conditioning
  • Power-windows with one-touch up/down
  • Tilt steering column
  • One 12-volt DC power outlet
  • Cup holders
  • USB port
  • Two speaker sound system

What about utility?

As a multi-purpose utility vehicle the Nissan NV Cargo offers multitudes of versatility. It is capable of towing varying loads under different setups. The base Nissan NV 1500 Cargo can carry a maximum payload of over 2700 pounds. The other V8 powered Nissan NV 3500 HD Cargo can carry up to about 4000 pounds.

7.0/10

The Nissan NV cargo looks like a van so it is in no way appealing. It is big and boxy all around and there’s hardly any hint of aerodynamics anywhere. Even the grille upfront is stocky to complement the rest of the design.

It does feature the traditional V-frame much like the rest of the Nissan cars though. Surrounding that large grille are equally large halogen headlamps. Also black accents all around do what they can to flair up Nissan’s stubby exterior.

2020 Nissan NV Cargo three quarter view

The sides are as basic as possible with wide-opening doors and high rising roof for enhanced accessibility. Its rear follows in the same theory and features tailgates for loading and unloading your cargo. The top-tier Nissan 3500 HD Cargo does spice things up with chrome highlights.

What are those eye catching features?

There’s hardly anything worth noticing or aesthetically pleasing about the 2020 Nissan NV Cargo but the exterior features still worth appreciating about it are:

  • Standard roof
  • Halogen headlights
  • Black grille
  • Black door handles

2020 Nissan NV Cargo Safety

8.0/10

Like its MPG ratings, the 2020 Nissan Cargo Van has not been tested by authorities for its safety either. It does however get adequate safety features which include:

  • Driver and passenger dual-stage front airbags
  • Driver and passenger’s seat-mounted side-impact airbags
  • Roof-mounted curtain side-impact airbags
  • 3-point ALR/ELR passenger seat belt
  • Zone body construction w/crumple zones
  • Energy absorbing steering column
  • Tire pressure monitor system

2020 Nissan NV Cargo Competition

Nissan NV Cargo vs. Ford Transit Cargo Van

For the starting price of the Ford Transit Cargo Van you can get yourself the V8 powered variant of the Nissan NV Cargo. Not just that, the Nissan NV Cargo is also a lot more practical. It is more accommodating, has a bigger fuel tank and can even store a lot more cargo. The Ford Transit Cargo Van looks better than the Nissan NV Cargo but that is not what vans are for.

2020 Ford Transit Cargo Van

Nissan NV Cargo vs. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Sure the Nissan NV Cargo is not as premium as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter but even its base 4.0-liter V6 is a lot more capable than the 2.0-liter turbo-four of that Merc. At the same this Nissan van is also less expensive. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter does have a larger cargo hold but the Nissan NV Cargo gets a relatively bigger fuel tank. Overall, the Nissan NV Cargo is a more logical choice.

2020 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

2020 Nissan NV Cargo Final Verdict

7.9/10

As a multi-functional cargo van, the 2020 Nissan NV Cargo has been adequately equipped. It also gets features like a 7-inch touchscreen and manually adjustable front row seats. At the same time, mechanical extras like the 5.6-liter V8 and seven-speed automatic gearbox further elevate capability. Overall, the Nissan NV Cargo manges to justify the money it asks for.

Overall it is a decent van which could have been far better only if it had better gas mileage and good visibility.

Does what's required of it

Pros - Power, transmission, heat up quickly

Cons - Quality, styling, comfort

7 /10 Overall Rating

Has a good pickup for a van and is a really good performer overall. The transmission is quick and precise; handling is better than any van I have driven. And it heats up really fast even on snowy days.

Practical van

Very smooth to drive but does have road noise which can be irritating at times. Other than that I really like the driving dynamics of my new Van!

Gets the job done

A decent van with bad handling! The performance is decent and so are the brakes. The only thing which could have been better is handling.
