Nissan has finally taken the wraps off its Z Proto development vehicle and we can’t help but just look at the pictures.

After a long wait, here is Nissan with its premiere of the Z Proto all in flesh. This is what the new “Fairlady” Z would look like. Carrying the legends of all its Z sports cars, this new one got the world’s attention from Nissan’s live feed from Yokohama, Japan. And just so you know Z groups in Franklin, south of Nashville saw it all live on big screens in an event. That’s how excited people are for the new Z.

Know more about the Nissan Z Proto:

"The Z represents the joy of driving in its purest form and has helped shape Nissan's DNA as a passionate, innovative challenger… ...Ever since the first generation, it has captured the hearts of car enthusiasts all over the world. That's why we're so excited today to be able to say to them: Yes, the next one is coming!" - Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida

Nissan had been long needing an upgrade on its 370Z which was not much different from its predecessor, the 350Z. Pretty long span with the same underpinnings. And with the fresh competition from Toyota, BMW, and Porsche, Nissan just had to make a cut. The Z Proto is one of 10 new vehicles that Nissan is showing for the U.S. in 20 months. Nissan is being pretty strong with their strategies.

"The United States is home to one of the most devoted and enthusiastic Z communities in the world, with nearly 1.35 million total sales over the model's 50-year history… ...With new models like the 2021 Nissan Sentra and the 2021 Nissan Rogue opening new eyes to our brand, Z Proto is our loudest statement yet that Nissan will continue to bring vehicles that thrill to the U.S. showrooms." -Mike Colleran, senior vice president, Nissan U.S. Marketing and Sales

Sporting a bright yellow pearlescent paint – a tribute to a popular paint scheme on both the first-generation 240Z and the 300ZX – the Z Proto boasts a fresh, attractive exterior design with a silhouette that communicates respect to the original model.

The exterior is very simplistic when compared to the present crop of cars that are going too busy in forms. The most simple of lines make the cars timeless. And this seems of one of them. Perfectly proportioned, with enough details to make you remind of the Z lineage. Just the wide and big rear window will take time to get used too. But this might be Nissan’s neat trick to access boot. Just a guess there. The bright yellow pearlescent paint is an hommage to the popular paint scheme that was on both the 240Z and 300ZX models. The side view and the rear also point to the formerly mentioned generation of Z.

"Our designers made countless studies and sketches as we researched each generation and what made them a success… ...Ultimately, we decided the Z Proto should travel between the decades, including the future." -Alfonso Albaisa, head of design at Nissan

The long hood and how it drops down in the front wide grille with teardrop-shaped LED lights perched on either side is unmistakable detail of the original Z. The car is not dimensioned “large” and it continues to remain easy and elegant, not losing the sportiness.

"The LED headlights have two half-circles that hark back to the Japan market-only 240ZG of the 70s… ...The ZG has clear dome lenses over the headlight buckets, which under light give off two circular reflections over each headlight. We liked that unique characteristic and discovered that it naturally fits with the Z's identity." -Alfonso Albaisa, head of design at Nissan

The 240Z when viewed from the side, its rear boot cut is directly seen on the Z proto. How the roof flows into the squared-off boot is very unusual and yet you have seen it on the previous Z. The signature transition from the rear quarter glass to the low-slung position of the rear tail adds to the effect. The rear lifts most inspiration from the 300ZX taillights, of course, re-interpreted. The rectangular black section with LED taillights that is just so 300ZX, you can’t miss it.

The Interior is focussed and is designed to fit like a glove around a driver. With most things black but accents of yellow contrast stitching pointing to the car's “fast” credentials. There’s a 12.3’ digital instrument console and arranged to help the driver grasp it at a glance, such as a redline shift point at the twelve o’clock position. The steering wheel is also designed keeping the vintage aesthetics in mind.

"The Z has always been a strong dynamic performer, making it easy for customers to enjoy its capabilities and feel as connected as possible to the car… ...This has been true through all its generations, and this is what drives our passion to innovate and challenge the norm." -Hiroshi Tamura, chief product specialist of the Z Proto

Make no mistake though, the Z Proto packs a powerful punch. Under the elongated hood is an enhanced V6 twin-turbocharged engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. As a prototype, work is now underway to synchronize the power with the grace and control that has defined the Z for the past 50 years.

Agility has been always the keynote when doing a “Z”. So even though the power kept on increasing on the Z generations, more power wasn’t the main goal. But still, the Z Proto packs a punch with a twin-turbo V6 with ahem... A manual gearbox. What Nissan had in mind is the exact right ingredients people miss today. Z range of cars has always held that motto. And the new Z will be good, we trust Nissan. Well Z4s, Supras, 718s? Here it comes.
