Capable off-roader derivatives of production cars are not something that is uncommon in automotive history; so very few would be surprised that a similar thing has been done to the 2021 Mini Cooper Countryman. However, this is more than just that, the British automaker has collaborated with a German off-road specialist company called X-raid and together the result of the production has won them a total of five Dakar rallies. Now, this evidently is an impressive piece of engineering, however, it is far from its road-going counterpart. So, for the more normal folk who want something similar to jump some dunes, Mini has decided to give the fans of this impressive feat of engineering a road-going model so that everyone can have a taste of its capability.
Mini Countryman X-raid Powertrain And Performance
The same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is assumed to power this car, although in a better state of tune. This engine is also featured in the Countryman S, in essence, the car under all the off-road bits is actually the Mini Cooper S Countryman All4. It would only make more sense for X-raid to work on this trim not only because of the 189-horsepower but also for the All4 that offers off-road friendly all-wheel drive. That is all Mini has decided to reveal about the car yet.
But that’s not all, of course for a car to be this capable, the car needs some really good hardware too. A robust wheel and tire setup are all the more obvious, and Mini quotes that they designed these 28-inch all-terrain tires mounted on 17-inch Beadlock wheels specifically for grueling off-road use. In order to provide some rigidity, a new rim ring ensures that the drivers don’t require a new wheel every time they crash over a rock a bit too fast than they should, at least the car will still move even after sustaining some damage.
Mini Countryman X-raid Exterior Highlights
All the hardware changes improve the look of the car too. For starters, the car sits taller than the standard Mini, 1.6 inches to be exact. This not only improves the ground clearance but the fording depth and ramp angle as well. All the off-road centric that we discussed earlier, apart from providing some tangible off-road benefits also enhances the car visually and the lifted suspension certainly makes the car look quite awesome.
Mini Countryman X-raid Interior Highlights
There is no news about the interiors if they are going to be any different. One thing which is safe to assume is that the car will have at least some visual changes in order to make the customers feel that they are sitting inside a special edition vehicle.
The Interiors should be based on the standard Countryman, which means it will be as practical as a small SUV. The interiors will be of high quality, which is not a surprise considering BMW is the parent company and you pay a pretty dollar for this SUV. Not just that, since the car is essentially based on the BMW X1 platform, there would be plenty of space for both the front and rear rows. The headroom is really impressive all courtesy of the high roof. The car is really great with storage space as well, 17.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats, and 30 when the seats are folded down flat.
The Mini Countryman X-raid will certainly be a special treat for the fans of this brand who have wanted something off-road centric like they have done for some years with the Dakar rallies. Mini is yet to confirm the exact pricing and the availability of this model in showrooms. However, the appeal of this car will be more as a lifestyle product and the more adventurous will certainly cash out as soon as Mini brings the cars to the dealerships.
