The 2022 Subaru BRZ takes the best of the Subaru DNA and dials it up to eleven. Completely redesigned for 2022, along with a bigger 228 hp 2.4L Boxer-4 unit and an ultra-lower center of gravity, the new BRZ is faster and sharper than its predecessor. A joint effort between Subaru and Toyota, the 2022 BRZ also gets redesigned interiors. With the release date for the 2022 Subaru BRZ set for early fall of 2021, the rear-wheel-drive-only 2022 BRZ with an expected price tag of MSRP $31,000, offers the best price to performance ratio in the industry.

2022 Subaru BRZ Latest Updates-

The all-new 2022 Subaru BRZ has been a long-time coming prospect and Subaru didn’t disappoint with this all-new second-generation version which is sharper, faster, and much more nimble than its predecessor in every way fathomable. Focused on a low center of gravity, the 2022 Subaru BRZ is the lightest RWD 2+2 sports car in the US automotive industry right now. A joint venture by Toyota and Subaru, the 228 hp 2022 Subaru BRZ is set for release sometime around the fall of 2021. Set to dethrone the king of affordable sports cars, the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the 2022 Subaru BRZ starts from an expected MSRP of $31,000.

Know More about the 2022 Subaru BRZ-

The 2022 BRZ, however, does not get any form of forced induction but Subaru says that’s been done to keep the costs down as the all-new 228 hp 2.4L Boxer engine of the 2022 BRZ instead offers a better balance by adding more power without the extra cost and it's safe to say that it works. The New BRZ does feel a lot faster, as all of the power is routed to the rear-wheels, and it also gets help from the praise-worthy 6-speed manual. In terms of looks, it has evolved in many ways. The exterior styling of the 2022 BRZ is more rounded and mature but it does lose some of that street racer character in the process.

The interior of the 2022 Subaru BRZ also gets a substantial overhaul but it's a lot less significant than the rest of the updates. For 2022, Subaru paves way for a more driver-focused interior as the BRZ now gets updated 8.0-inch infotainment which is up-to-date with the latest SUBARU STARLINK features and a fully digital gauge cluster, with a tachometer upfront. Overall, the lightest 2+2 production sports car in the US, the 2022 BRZ, with a curb weight of 2815 lbs is a major leap forward in the right direction, and with an expected price tag of around $31,000 MSRP, it really does make a compelling case for itself as it has virtually no competition except for the seasoned rivals such as the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Chevrolet Camaro, and the Ford Mustang.

What are the New and Updated features on offer in the 2022 Subaru BRZ?

The 2022 Subaru BRZ is all-new from the ground-up. This next-generation sports coupe gets an all-new drivetrain and at its heart is a 2.4L Boxer-4 which has been co-developed with Toyota and which is not to be mistaken for the 2.4L engine unit that is found in the Subaru Ascent. This new engine is mounted to an all-new monocoque frame where it sits lower than before for an improved center of gravity. The new engine is mated to either a close-ratio 6-speed manual box or a 6-speed torque converter unit with paddle shifters.

We still think the 6-speed manual on the BRZ is a no-brainer but for those who are looking for a more convenient and hassle-free alternative, the Automatic does a good job. The new exterior is subtle but sharp and does give the BRZ a very next generation look. Moreover, on the Interior front too, Subaru BRZ has redesigned a driver-focused interior, with the latest SUBARU STARLINK systems. Furthermore, it also features a new customizable 7-inch digital instrument cluster with a programmable tachometer.

Notable Specs and features of the 2022 Subaru BRZ include:

  • 6-speed manual transmission
  • New Sport mode
  • New upturned "ducktail" rear spoiler
  • Sporty 18” Alloy Wheels
  • 7” fully digital gauge cluster
  • The all-new 8-inch infotainment system
  • Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology.

What is the Release Date of the 2022 Subaru BRZ?

Subaru just unveiled the 2022 BRZ as a next-generation model. Now, according to Subaru’s press release, they will commence production of the 2022 Subaru BRZ at their Gunma, Japan assembly plant, and which will be made available to customers in markets across the globe by early fall, of 2021.

How does the 2022 Subaru BRZ fare on the Engine and Performance front?

Under the hood of the 2022 Subaru BRZ, is an all-new upgraded 2.4L Boxer-4 engine which uses Toyota’s D-4S direct fuel injection and port injection system for improved throttle response over its predecessor, and as a result, it puts out a healthy 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque which is 28 more horsepower than the outgoing version. Along with the added power, 2022 gets improved driving dynamics, courtesy of a series of small changes that add up to a significantly better overall experience.

For starters the new 2022 Subaru BRZ with its updated chassis boasts a lower center of gravity, and combined with the limited-slip differential and Michelin Pilot Sport tires that are part of the standard kit, it feels a lot more eager when changing directions. The new BRZ also gets a significantly better transmission setup. Talking about the party piece, i.e the 6-speed stick shift, the ratios are well matched and the gates between each gear are extremely slick which makes flying between gears a breeze.

The clutch is light too and all-in-all, it's a significantly sharper experience. Even the 6-speed auto gets plenty of good stuff such as paddle shifters and downshift blipping control along with dedicated snow and sand mode which are absent in the manual version. Overall, the updates add up to provide a notably better experience. The only car that comes close to rivaling the Subaru BRZ’s balanced handling characteristics is the 2021 Mazda Miata which follows a similar ideology.

How fast is the 2022 Subaru BRZ from 0-60 MPH?

Subaru collaborated with Toyota to bring it's sport's coupe offering. viz. the 2022 BRZ to life. WIth being the only Rear-wheel-driven offering from the Subaru lineup, the 228 hp 2.4L Naturally Aspirated Boxer-4 powered 2022 Subaru BRZ should in hindsight cover the 0-60 MPH distance in about 6.1 seconds, as the previous iteration of the BRZ with just about 200 hp did it in 6.3 seconds. Push the 2022 BRZ to the limits, and it shall do the quarter-mile in highly respectable 14.5 seconds, all the while achieving a top speed of 143 MPH.

The Ford Mustang, with its 301 horses is the fastest car in this segment, whereas the other reasonable quick car, the 2021 Chevrolet Camaro, is only next to the Mustang, as it trails behind it by 0.3 seconds. Furthermore, the American automotive giants have thus proved that more raw power is never a bad idea.

What are the MPG figures delivered by the 2022 Subaru BRZ?

The 2022 Subaru BRZ does get a bigger and more powerful Boxer-4 engine as part of the update which should translate to worse fuel economy, however with its complex, Toyota derived D4-S fueling system which utilizes direct as well as port injection suggests otherwise. At city speed, the 2022 Subaru BRZ should deliver 24 MPG in the city, and about 33 MPG out on the highway, similar to the 2021 BRZ.

This is just as well if not better than the outgoing version but for the times when you decide to floor it, it will deliver precise amounts of fuel for the best possible combustion. Final figures will only be unveiled once the production version starts to roll out of the production lines, but as of now, it's safe to assume that the 2022 BRZ will deliver decent fuel economy figures, like the previous iterations.

Mazda MX-5 Miata turns up the heat when it comes to the fuel-efficiency part, as with its superb fuel management system, the 2021 MX-5 Miata is able to cover a maximum of 365 miles. Furthermore, looking at the other rivals at hand, both the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro deliver much more power than the rest, and hence their efficiency figures stand out to hold the last place on the leaderboard.

What are the changes made to the Interior front of the 2022 Subaru BRZ?

The 2022 Subaru BRZ gets a virtually unchanged interior layout but there’s quite a bit of new and improved hardware to talk about. The use of leather, Alcantara, and aluminum in the right places make the interior of the Subaru BRZ a nice place to be in. The touchpoints of the car like the steering wheel, gear knob are all wrapped in leather, and the seats get a combination of leather and Alcantara. The overall heart and quality of the materials also feels a lot better than its predecessor and gives this sporty coupe a purpose-built feel without sacrificing basic comfort and utility to look the part.

The 2022 Subaru BRZ does get plenty of new hardware which includes the likes of an all-new 7” driver’s display which displays plenty of information and sports performance telemetry somewhat similar to the system found in Nissan GT-R’s and other supercars which can display lap-timers, oil temperature and other useful bits of information that might come handy during track days. Also new for the 2022 BRZ, is an updated infotainment system which uses the same 8-inch unit seen on most modern Subaru’s and it offers much better connectivity options than the outgoing car’s 6.2” unit, all thanks to the latest features from the SUBARU STARLINK.

The cabin on paper does offer rear seats, but just like any other purpose-built coupe, they are pretty much useless. Anybody over 4 feet tall or with actual legs will find it cumbersome but the cabin does offer decent storage space. The trunk of the Subaru BRZ too has nothing great to offer, as even though it's a tad bit larger and wider than its predecessor, compared to the Mustang and the Camaro, it offers little in the way of practicality but again with the Miata in the picture, it does look quite practical in comparison.

What are the changes made to the Exterior front of the 2022 Subaru BRZ?

The 2022 Subaru BRZ looks like it had a sensible salad for breakfast and is all set to go to a boardroom meeting all decked-up when compared to its predecessor. Gone are the street, boy-racer looks and instead the 2022 Subaru BRZ looks more mature with well-defined cuts and creases and with lesser angular headlamps.

Don’t get me wrong here, it still looks like a proper and sprightly little coupe but it looks more grown-up at the same time and that might not suit everybody’s taste. The rear profile is however a lot cleaner and well defined than the outgoing version. The 18” alloy wheels and the wide fenders make it look bigger and wider too and it's arguably a much better daily driver from an aesthetic standpoint.

Subaru's bold new styling with the functional aerodynamic details makes the 2022 BRZ over an inch longer, half an inch lower, and lighter than its predecessor. Moreover, the BRZ's roof depicts what they call a subtle "double bubble" exterior appearance, a tribute to the then vintage racing cars. Now when we say functional aerodynamics, the 2022 BRZ does have functional side vents, and small fins at the back of the rear wheels to assist in air-flow.

What are the Safety features on offer in the 2022 Subaru BRZ?

Subaru gives its offerings paramount importance on the safety front. Now though the 2020 Subaru BRZ did get a respectable 4 out of 5 stars in the safety crash from the NHTSA, we expect the 2022 Subaru BRZ to go all the way for the perfect 5 on 5 rating in the crash tests, as now based on the Subaru Global Platform, the 2022 BRZ gets a reinforced chassis with a sub-frame high-strength body structure that is designed to keep the passengers inside safe at all costs.

Furthermore, the 2022 Subaru BRZ also comes with Subaru's latest EyeSight safety system, which offers the latest active and passive safety features available, such as the automatic Pre-Collision Braking, and Adaptive Cruise Control. SUBARU STARLINK also offers an array of features that keep you connected to services such as the Enhanced Roadside Assistance and Automatic Collision Notification amongst other features.

Is the 2022 Subaru BRZ worth buying?

The 2022 Subaru BRZ is not just a minor overhaul, it’s a leap in almost every direction. Subaru has focused on what the consumers wanted and they have delivered with a powertrain that’s not just more powerful, but sharper and better in every single way. Moreover, they haven't even bothered with changing the areas that don't need much work as the creature comforts included in the interior because let's face it, cars like these are all about delivering a pure driving experience and the Subaru BRZ, without a doubt delivers in spades. So to cut-short, the 2022 Subaru BRZ is most likely to be the best light-weight sports car out there in the US market.
