The all-new Mercedes EQA is based on the latest GLA subcompact crossover and marks the beginning of a series of launches planned for this year under Mercedes’s EQ line. This entry-level subcompact takes styling cues from the bigger GLC and combines clever features with the latest EV technology. It has been released for the European market for now and the U.S. launch still remains undecided.

The all-new 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQA is the German luxury auto marque's all-new luxury subcompact SUV. Based on the latest GLA crossover, this new EV is built on the same modular architecture as its gasoline-powered sibling which helps the brand keep the costs in check. It shares its major styling cues like the LED light bars at the front and rear and the signature black panel upfront with the bigger EQC SUV which will be the trademark elements for the rest of the EQ lineup.

The EQA is positioned as a luxury subcompact and will take on the likes of the latest Tesla model 3, the Mustang Mach-E from Ford, and is waiting to take the fight to the entire fleet of upcoming EVs from VW group which will pose the biggest challenge to this entry-level EV from Mercedes, especially if you consider the price which is expected to be around the $57K mark, although it will be subject to subsidies once it reaches the US shores which should drive the costs down significantly.

What’s new in the 2022 Mercedes EQA?

The 2022 Mercedes EQA is an all-new product from the Mercedes EQ line of Electric Vehicles. The new EQA is the entry-level offering in their EV lineup and Mercedes claims it strikes the perfect balance between luxury, performance, and costs. It promises to deliver the thrill and agility of the GLA and combines it with the efficiency and futuristic tech that comes with an electric powertrain.

At the time of the launch, the EQA will only be available in the 250 trim. This entry-level version will be equipped with a 66.5 kWh battery pack that should be good for 486 kilometers of range according to NEDC and will pack the latest MBUX infotainment optimized for the EQ lineup.

Notable specification and features of the 2022 Mercedes EQA include:

  • Full LED Headlamps and Taillamps with signature light bar design
  • Automatic Anticipatory Driving
  • Standard Heat Pump
  • Intelligent Driving Assistance system
  • Android Auto and Apple Carplay

Release Date

The all-new 2021 Mercedes EQA will go on sale on the 4th of February in Europe through Mercede’s online channels and should be available in the US by early April.

What to expect under the 2022 Mercedes EQA’s hood?

The Mercedes EQA shares its modular architecture with the current generation GLA. By using a modular architecture instead of going for a bespoke EV platform, Mercedes can keep the costs down and fine-tune this platform for improved dynamics.

Powering the EQA 250 which will be the only model available at the time of launch will be an Asynchronous motor powering the front wheels since it's based on the GLA’s AWD platform and will come mated to a 66.5 kWh battery pack that should be good for 486 kilometers of range according to NEDC and should allow this EV to get to 60 mph from a standstill in just 8.9 seconds and will have a top speed of just under 100 mph.

The EQA fleet will receive higher-end models along the lines which will include AWD versions that will be powered by an additional powertrain (eATS) which should allow it to have nifty features like e-torque vectoring and the powertrain itself will produce a nifty 268 horsepower which is a good deal more than the entry-level EQA 250s 190 horsepower.

Apart from this, Mercedes will also roll out a more practical, long-range version with a range of over 500 kilometers which it claims to achieve by a combination of bigger batteries and improving the efficiency of vital components. The dual-motor AWD setup for the EQA also implies that there will also be an AMG performance version coming to the lineup later.

How many Miles will the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQA do?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 will be powered by a 66.5 kWh battery pack which should allow for an impressive WLTP range of 265 miles, or according to Mercedes, 486 miles. These figures might not be groundbreaking but they are appropriate for this segment and Mercedes has also said that a long-range version with around 311-miles will be joining the lineup soon.

The modular architecture will also allow for super-fast DC charging speeds of up to 100 kW that should allow the batteries to go from flat to 80% charge in a surprisingly short 30 minutes. And with a regular 11kW wall adapter, a full charge will come up in a little under six hours.

What to expect from the 2022 Mercedes EQA Interior?

The 2022 Mercedes EQA will get a familiar interior. Since it shares its platform with the regular GLA, the interior will be pretty much identical in terms of quality and layout, with subtle touches to distinguish it from its gasoline-powered sibling. The high seating position which could be a little higher than the GLA’s, thanks to a floor full of batteries, allows for great all-round visibility, combined with its petite dimensions, will make it a nimble vehicle perfect for the urban jungle.

Apart from that, the seats are going to be identical and so is the legroom even though the second row should be easier for three people thanks to the lack of a transmission tunnel. Overall the EQA should be a very pleasant and familiar place to be in.

Does the 2022 Mercedes EQA come loaded with Tech inside?

Staying close to Mercedes’s conventional nomenclature, the Mercedes EQA will feature the same, stunning dual-display setup as seen on the latest generation of A-series vehicles including the GLA and CLA. Powering these elegant displays will be the same MBUX software that will be specially optimized for the EQ range. The optimizations will allow the system to plot the most efficient routes based on factors like range, availability to Charging Stop, making those long-distance trips that much easier.

The app-based software also allows the EQA to preheat the cabin without taking a lot of power thanks to a pair of power-efficient heat pumps that come as standard across the lineup. Apart from that, the standard set of signature Mercedes touches which we have seen on the new GLA-class will make its way into the cabin of the EQA including the huge panoramic sunroof and the stunning 64 color ambient lighting system.

The 2022 Mercedes EQA comes with:

  • 10.25-inch infotainment screen
  • 10.25-inch Digital gauge cluster
  • Keyless Go which includes unlocking and start of the SUV
  • Garage door opener
  • 64 color ambient lighting system
  • Inductive charging and NFC pairing
  • Augmented video for navigation
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirrors.
  • steering wheel control buttons
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Will there be any changes to the Exterior of the 2022 Mercedes EQA?

The Mercedes EQA even though is based on the GLA, shares more external design cues with the bigger EQC luxury crossover. The front end features the familiar fiber optic light bar and the same piano black panel instead of the grill that houses the three-pointed star along with the radar for the semi-autonomous driving tech. The rear too features the light bar detail which helps it stand out from other entry-level models from Mercedes.

The EQ range will also feature bespoke wheels that won't be shared with the rest of the lineup and it's safe to say, these wheels look classy and futuristic without looking way out of place, unlike some other EVs. The design is not just elegant but these minor touches such as the new wheels and grille make the EQA a lot more aerodynamic than the standard GLA, which is made clear by its extremely low drag coefficient of 0.28.

Final Verdict

The 2021 Mercedes EQA is the German auto marque's first compact EV, in a long lineup of EVs that are set to debut this year. The EQA just like its gasoline-powered sibling is compact and packed with practical features but the highlight is the EV power plant which offers a usable range and the latest quick charging technology for quality and futuristic experience as we have come to expect from Mercedes. With an expected starting price of over $50K, the Mercedes EQA even though similar to the likes of the Tesla Model 3 and Mustang Mach-E, will contest in a more premium segment which is expected to get crowded soon with players like Audi expected to launch EVs of their own real soon. It will be interesting to see if the EQA can benefit from this short term dominance in this newly created segment.
