The 2022 Hyundai Kona N is a performance-oriented compact SUV with sporty-looking exterior tweaks. Powered by a 280 PS 2 L Turbocharged GDI engine with a wet-clutch 8-speed DCT. 0-62 mph time is 5.5 seconds and top speed is 150 mph.

After a lot of hiding and seek with the long-awaited Hyundai Kona N, the Korean company has finally released their performance compact SUV. Hyundai released through a digital showcase of what they call is an SUV with a combination of versatility, spirited acceleration, agility and racetrack readiness.

With the company’s new N-branded Kona, Hyundai intends to release more such cars under their N-brand lineup. They also intend to commit to sustainable e-performance, giving a glimpse of the future direction for motorsport initiatives. The next in the lineup will be the N-line Elantra. For now, we haven’t seen it testing or being spied but expect the stories to pour in soon.

“We are thrilled to share the mindset, spirit and vision of the N brand to be a leader in the high-performance category powered by traditional internal combustion engines as well as our proven industry-leading battery electric and fuel cell electric vehicle technologies… ...Our continuously growing and more balanced N portfolio will open new high-performance options, delivering the ‘grin factor’ no matter what the propulsion technology or body type may be.” - Thomas Schemera, Executive Vice President and Head of Customer Experience Division at Hyundai Motor Company

The Kona N is specially tweaked for sporty and dynamic driving starting from the suspension it has what Hyundai says ‘race-track capabilities. Added with the high-performance engine the new SUV is waiting for its impending drive review.

“KONA N is a true hot SUV with the performance level of a hot hatch. It breaks the rule that SUVs are less fun to drive. As an N model, it goes beyond the limits of an ordinary SUV… ...KONA N can carve corners on the racetrack and bring excitement to everyday driving.” -Albert Biermann, President and Head of R&D Division at Hyundai Motor Group

Engine, Performance and Features

The engine under the hood is the 2 L turbocharged GDI engine which is mated to an 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. The transmission is developed in-house by Hyundai and is actually an enhanced version of the 8DCT. For instance, it receives improvements in durability, for it to be able to handle the high-performance credentials. The transmission control unit is specifically designed for the N, so to make it shift faster. The new driving features include N Grin Shift (NGS), N Power Shift (NPS) and N Track Sense Shift (NTS).

The power output of the new Kona N is 280 PS and 290 pound-foot of torque. Apparently, the N Grin Shift or NGS enhances the power to 290 PS. The power curve is flatter to improve the throttle response and acceleration. The top speed is 150 mph and it can do 0-62 mph in 5.5 seconds with launch control, as claimed by Hyundai. Hyundai has also employed N Corner Carving Differential and electronical limited-slip differential (E-LSD) which control the 19-inch lightweight forged wheels.

There is a lot of equipment as standard, which includes:

  • Launch Control
  • Variable Exhaust System
  • N Grin Control System

The N Grin Control System lets the driver decide from 5 driving modes which include: Eco, Normal, Sport, N and Custom. These vary the driving characteristics, engine sound, steering response, electronic stability control to optimize for different situations. The body has been stiffened with extra welding points, improved strut ring structure and a reinforced skeleton to enhance stiffness.

The 2022 Hyundai Kona KONA N deploys a 10” infotainment screen with a digital instrument cluster which also features a Head-up display. The HUD is intended to give a game-like experience that also shows updates like lap time and N track maps which will show the vehicle’s position on the track. It is further added with real-time driving information. Especially for Europe Kona N has a feature of detecting double-curved road signs which are detected by the N Road sense, which will recommend switching to N mode in such situations.

It also has Bluetooth Multi-connection support and an enhanced natural language voice recognition system which is further enhanced with Speech-to-Meaning and Deep Meaning Understanding.

Exterior Features

The little SUV looks dynamic from point go, with 19” forged wheels it gives the vehicle a wide and confident stance look. The body-colored bumpers try to make it look close-to-ground. The tires are high-performance and can be upgraded to a wider section with wheel upgrades.

The color that is specially developed for the Kona N is the Sonic Blue which is pretty close to the performance blue which is a trademark N brand color. There is a front lip spoiler and side skirts for the extra sporty effect and what completes the look is the double-winged roof spoiler. The front bumper has a wider air intake which has its roots to an aeronautic fuselage. There is also a small detail like the N-specific triangular brake light.
