The 2022 Acura MDX Prototype has been revealed and gives us an insight into the next-gen Acura MDX. The 2022 MDX gets wider, longer, and sharper and is a major shift, with an extensive redesign and new features. The interior has also been exclusively updated with new dashboard design and plenty of luxury and technology features. Acura has confirmed a 2022 MDX Type S with a new 3.0L Turbo V6 engine as well. Expect the production version of the 2022 Acura MDX Prototype to be priced from $45,500 and launch is slated for early 2021.

2022 Acura MDX Prototype Latest Updates:

The 2022 Acura MDX Prototype was recently unveiled and it gives us the first look at the all-new 4th Gen Acura MDX that will go on sale in the first quarter of 2021. This 3-Row luxury SUV finally gets a generation upgrade after 6 long years and by the first impressions, it has surely been upgraded with the times! Acura has redesigned the exterior and the 2022 MDX is longer and wider than the outgoing model. The major addition is a new 3.0L Turbo V6 engine that will power the more powerful 2022 Acura MDX Type S.

The interior of the new MDX has also been given a much-needed overhaul with a redesigned dashboard and added luxury features. The 2022 Acura MDX Hybrid model will also flaunt all of the new updates except for the powertrain. It continues with the same 3.0L Naturally Aspirated hybrid engine but will most probably get the new 10-Speed Automatic transmission as the rest of the bunch. It now jumps back in the game and faces the modern bunch of luxury SUVs including the likes of BMW X5, Audi Q7, and Infiniti QX60, being the more prominent ones of the wider bunch.

2022 Acura MDX Prototype Price And Feature Updates

The 2022 Acura MDX is expected to be priced from $45,500. Set to be an all-new car, the 2022 MDX borrows its styling and tech features from the recently revamped 2021 RDX and the sharper 2021 TLX. Talking of the design, it has been thoroughly updated and now rocks a more muscular and dynamic design language. The sculpted hood with the long and upright grille stands for power and demands presence, and is now anchored on a lower and wider body.

The engine is now set further back and low, enabling an increase of 6 inches in the dash-to-axle dimension. The 21-inch wheels have been positioned more towards corners increasing the wheelbase by 3 inches. The interior of the MDX Prototype shows why it is befitting of the flagship status from the Japanese marque. The cabin design is now more premium and more sophisticated than before and now features a more upright instrument panel. And the major addition is its new Type S model coupled to a more powerful engine.

The interior is now trimmed in authentic materials which include open-pore wood with infused metallic flake, soft-touch Milano leather, and polished aluminum. The now wider body translates to more space in the interior for the people to stretch out, in all three rows, with noticeably more headroom for front and third-row passengers. It is now more athletic to drive as Acura has given the MDX a much stiffer double-wishbone suspension upfront.

2022 Acura MDX Prototype Engine And Performance

The 2022 MDX will be powered by Acura’s 3.5L V6 which is good for 290 horses and 267 lb-ft of torque. This is the same powerplant that powers the current-gen but will now be mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission which ensures smooth gear changes. There will also be a much-anticipated Acura MDX Type S which will feature an exclusive 3.0L turbocharged V6 producing approximately 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque, the most powerful engine yet to be ever put into an Acura SUV.

All the MDX Type S models will have the SH-AWD putting all the power on the ground through the same slick-shifting 10-speed automatic gearbox. The new 2022 MDX Prototype debuts an all-new platform that is built to provide sharp handling, exceptional cabin quietness, and refined ride comfort. The MDX Prototype also features Acura’s most rigid SUV body to date and is made to support Type S levels of performance as well as support advanced safety tech.

Attached to this new body is a new more performance-focused chassis featuring the MDX’s first double-wishbone suspension which promises sharp and sporty handling characteristics with improved comfort and better road holding. These features alone make it a performance luxury SUV to look out for and we believe that Germans will already be paying close attention to the new kid in the block. Another aspect that Acura has aced at is its pricing, which always happens to undercut the major rivals. We expect it to be the same, for the 2022 MDX as well.

2022 Acura MDX Prototype Interior

The 2022 Acura MDX Prototype impresses us with a revamped and luxurious cabin layout. The 2022 MDX comes with a spacious and luxurious seating arrangement wrapped in leather so the occupants can enjoy great comfort. Also, the cabin is loaded with the latest technology features to keep you company on those cross-country drives. The materials used also mimic its lux-appeal, as it gets an array of materials including open-pore wood trimming fused with metallic flake, polished aluminum, and  Miano leather inserts.

The seats are heated and ventilated, which adds on to its overall comfort factor. The 2022 MDX Prototype gets added legroom in all 3 rows and more headroom for the first and third row. Even the steering wheel has got a heating feature and gets wrapped in premium leather on higher trims. The trunk capacity of the Acura MDX is also sufficient for a long weekend getaway, despite having 3 lavish rows. Acura has used opulent materials to wrap its modern technology features and it comes together quite well.

Talking of the technology features, Acura has formulated a dashboard layout similar to the one seen in the all-new 2021 TLX. The instrument console is now an all-digital 12.3-inch layout that Acura calls the Precision Cockpit. The new floating infotainment system is also a 12.3-inch unit that is a steep upgrade from the last generation's chunky dual-screen layout. But the system is still controlled via a touchpad as every other Acura, which has been claimed to be improved and is more intuitive.

Even the core used for computation has been replaced by a more powerful unit which translates to a much quicker and more fluidic user experience, much like the current-gen smartphones. Acura has revamped and replaced the audio system in the 2022 MDX Prototype with a "Signature Edition" ELS STUDIO 3D system that is the most advanced and most powerful audio system in any Acura offering, per se. Notable new and refreshed interior and technology features in the 2022 Acura MDX Prototype are:

  • Leather-Trimmed curvilinear quilted sports seats with fresh upholstery options for all the rows
  • Front 16-Way Power Adjust Seats with Power Lumbar Support
  • Ebony and Light Orchin leather for the instrument cluster
  • Dual glass pane panoramic moonroof
  • 9-massage modes for the front row
  • Acura Iconic Drive LED ambient lighting with 27 colors
  • 12.3-inch duo of the instrument cluster and floating infotainment system
  •  ELS STUDIO 3D premium audio system with 22 channel and 25 speakers

2022 Acura MDX Prototype Exterior Redesign

The 2022 Acura MDX Prototype is elusive enough, thanks to its gorgeous matte Liquid Carbon exterior shade, that it was showcased in. The Performance Red wasn't bad either, and Acura clearly gave us a picture of the sportier MDX Type S with the red. A generous chrome treatment, LED headlights, bold and sporty front grille, and massive alloy wheels are the attractive aspects of the MDX. All of these design cues are expected to get sharper and flaunt varying patterns for the 2022 MDX.

We are grateful to Acura for not fiddling with the form factor of the MDX which even in its current generation was the highlight when it was launched. The prominent lines across the SUV have been preserved but are now sharper and cleaner. Most of the already available features in the 2020 Acura MDX will be carried over for the 2022 MDX as well. The higher trims of the 2022 MDX will get new 20-inch sporty wheels and chrome-finish, which makes it look even muscular and premium.

The engine has been pushed lower and back a bit which has helped improve on the dashboard to front axle distance, which lowers its center of gravity. This means that the dashboard has been pushed further forward that further facilitates improved interior space. The various packages on offer will enhance the exterior with varying treatments, and our personal favorite is the A-Spec package which darkens out everything, giving it a rather sinister look. Notable new exterior features showcased in the 2022 Acura MDX Prototype are:

  • 3 new exterior shades - Matte Liquid Carbon, Performance Red
  • 3D diamond pentagon grille
  • 4-element JewelEye LED headlights are now sleeker
  • Redesigned ChichaneLED taillamps
  • Integrated LED foglamp cut-outs are now positioned towards the corners
  • New 21-inch alloy wheels

2022 Acura MDX Prototype Safety Features

Acura has greatly amplified on the safety aspect of the 2022 MDX. The Prototype has been showcased with numerous new features starting with the next generation of Acura's Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Body Structure that has more rigidity than before. It also comes with enhanced occupant safety and active features. Safety has always been a priority for Acura and in the new MDX, they have doubled down on things, to provide for an improved yet economical package.

Acura has also taken a bunch of new safety features that were introduced in the all-new 2021 Acura ILX. This includes Acura's Next-Gen front passenger airbag technology, which improves occupant protection for a wider array of crash case scenarios. The AcuraWatch bundle of active and passive safety features have also been given a deep overhaul with improved and added features. Some of the advanced driver-assistance features included in the AcruaWatch are:

  • Blind Spot Information System: will give an indicator on the windshield pillar and an audible warning if the MDX detects a vehicle in the next lane’s blind spot. This will activate when the MDX is cruising above 20 mph.
  • A surround-view camera enables the drivers to see a lot more than they physically can while inside the car. This provides an unparalleled advantage during parking because four cameras which are positioned around the car assist in uncovering potential obstacles.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Monitor: gains awareness of approaching vehicles while backing up the car and will give a visual and audible alert when an approaching vehicle is detected.
  • AcuraLink Connected Services provides the driver with an assortment of features like a live concierge and also enables remote locking and unlocking of your car. This service will also notify a response center agent if the system detects an airbag deployment.

Talking of how the crash-tests will pan out, we expect the 2022 MDX to carry the legacy of the current-gen MDX forward and outshine every other car in the category to be the safest of all.

2022 Acura MDX Prototype Launch And Expectations

The new 2022 Acura MDX will be a whole new car and will go through a thorough update to the interior and the exterior. The tech will be updated and optimized to reduce the risk of error and there’s a whole new platform that the MDX is based on providing sporty handling. The addition of an improved suspension setup with the 2022 Acura MDX being the first to get a double-wishbone frontal layout, will hugely improve its driving dynamics as well.

The newer Type S is expected to be both feature-loaded and also be the most powerful MDX ever, backed by a new 3.0L turbocharged V6 engine capable of 355 horses. If you ask us, the new 2022 Acura MDX is destined to be the best luxury crossover in this segment and will finally help the automaker to jump right back in the game that has long been dominated by the German bunch. It will be even more impressive if Acura actually pulls off the expected MPRP of $45,500 which isn't a huge jump when taking into account the generation upgrade it gets. A year's worth of wait will surely not go in vain, that's for sure!
