The release date for both the 2021 V60 wagon and the V60 Cross Country is expected to be sometime around late 2020. Also available in a frugal plug-in hybrid variant, the 2021 Volvo V60 wagon comes with slightly updated specs and safety features along with better mpg figures this time around. The T8 Polestar model takes the EV route for 2021. Built on the same platform as the pricier XC90, the 2021 Volvo V60, powered by the 2.0L turbo engine, starts from an MSRP of $40,950, whereas the 415 hp hybrid-powered T8 Polestar starts from an expected MSRP of $68,295.

2021 Volvo V60 Latest Updates-

The V60 is a station wagon from the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo. The V60 is Volvo’s take on how a modern wagon should look, feel, and drive. For 2021, the V60 remains majorly as a carryover model, albeit with a few feature changes both on the interior and exterior front, especially with the slightly tweaked front-end with the exclusive "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights. With the 2021 Volvo V60 donning the wagon look, there is an SUV-centric V60 Cross Country too, both of which have an expected release date set sometime around the end of 2020.

The 2021 Volvo V60 remains mostly identical to the 2020 model year, in terms of visual appeal. The 2021 Volvo V60 is built on the Scalable Product Architecture, Volvo’s advanced modular product platform that underpins all Volvo offerings in the 90 and 60 Series like the S90, V90, and XC90 to name a few. Powered by a 250 hp 2.0L turbocharged engine unit, the 2021 V60 wagon starts from an expected MSRP of $40,950, whereas the Recharge Plug-In Variant of the 2021 V60 starts off at an expected MSRP of $67,400. Furthermore, apart from the mechanical front, the 2021 V60 gets a ton of new safety features such as blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert as standard across the lineup.

  • New Linear Lime wood interior accents for the V60 Cross Country

The praise-worthy trim lineup of the V60 also makes a return for the 2021 MY, which includes the R-Design trim that gets new wheel designs and black exterior and interior accents all around. The T8 Polestar variant also takes the mild EV route for 2021, as it now houses the Recharge badge. Although despite these changes, there is one thing that remains unchanged for 2021, and that is the competition, as this time around too the Volvo V60 fights it out against the Audi A4 Allroad, Subaru Outback, and the VW Golf Sportwagen for the ultimate wagon supremacy.

What are the Trims and Updated Features of the 2021 Volvo V60?

The 2021 V60 remains similar to the previous model year. One important update in the Volvo lineup is that the entire model range now gets an optional 48-volt mild hybrid system to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. This has amplified its already efficient nature. The 2021 Volvo V60 is priced from an MSRP of $40,995 for the Momentum trim and goes all the way up to $47,045 for the Inscription trim.

Volvo continues to offer the 2021 V60 in three fully-fledged trims, namely- Momentum, R-Design and Inscription. Safety has always been a key selling point for Volvos and it remains unchanged for this baby wagon as well. The 2021 Volvo V60 gets an impressive list of standard technology and safety features along with a list of optional features to fine-tune your vehicle as per your taste.

All of the new features in the 2021 Volvo V60 are:

  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • LED headlamps
  • Power-folding exterior mirrors with an auto-dimming feature
  • Additional USB-C charging ports as standard
  • Momentum trim receives a new 18-inch wheel design
  • R-Design trim adds gloss black exterior accents
  • Cross Country receives new Linear Limewood interior trim as standard

How does the 2021 Volvo V60 fare on the Engine and Performance front?

The base engine found in the 2021 V60 produces 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, much like the 2020 V60’s power figures. Thanks to the introduction of hybrid variants, the fuel economy figures and emissions will be brought down by 15%, according to Volvo. Also, it has helped in drastically improving its baseline acceleration by taking over the RPM range that is overshadowed by the turbo lag that is common in turbocharged engines.

The V60 is now available with a range of 48-volt mild hybrid variants, as well as two plug-in hybrid options: the T6 Twin Engine AWD that generates a combined 340hp and the T8 Twin Engine AWD that delivers as much as 407hp. That said, Volvo has also come up with a plug-in-hybrid version of the 2021 V60 as that seems highly possible given how the automotive fraternity is moving towards hybridization.

The Audi A4 Allroad has better power delivery when compared to the Volvo V60 and the Audi also produces more torque. The Subaru Outback and VW golf are way down in terms of power output but the price difference is significant. Subaru Outback sure houses a radical powerplant with the 2.5L Naturally Aspirated Falt-4 engine but its turbocharged counterparts have the edge here with quicker performance figures.

How fast is the 2021 Volvo V60 from 0-60 MPH?

The 2.0L turbocharged unit with the 8-Speed automatic gearbox sling-shots the 2021 Volvo V60 from 0-60 MPH in just about 6.5 seconds, all the while achieving a top speed of 131 MPH. This makes it the fastest wagon in this segment. The power is put down in a linear manner, as you get all of the 258 lb-ft of torque right at the beginning of the power band unlike the others in the segment. Moreover, if that isn't enough for you, the plug-in-hybrid T8 Polestar variant with its supercharged 4-cylinder engine catapults the 2021 V60 from 0-60 MPH in an astonishing 4.4 seconds, all thanks to its 415 horses.

The 2021 Audi A4 Allroad is definitely the fastest of the lot, because of its best-in-class power figures. Volvo V60 comes in second with its 6.5 seconds 0-60 MPH figure, with the 2021 Subaru Outback following it thereafter.

What MPG figures are delivered by the 2021 Volvo V60?

The EPA hasn’t released any details of the 2021 V60’s emissions or fuel economy and we reckon it would be much better than the figures posted by the 2020 V60. The 2021 Volvo V60 manages to return a combined fuel efficiency of 28 mpg. The various drive modes on offer- ECO, Comfort, Off-Road, and Dynamic also helps in adapting the powertrain to optimize fueling and performance.

That said the VW Golf Sportwagen holds an upper hand by offering 32 mpg combined. Each year EPA posts stringent norms that all manufacturers have to comply with. Volvo would be no exception and they too will have to add additional particulate filters and upgraded catalytic converters to meet the norms.

The figures obtained by V60 beats the Audi A4 Allroad, while the Subaru and Volkswagen deliver almost the same numbers despite underpowered engines. It can be noted that the overall range is better in the Subaru Outback thanks to its 18.5-gallon fuel tank, which is much larger than any of its competition.

What changes are made on the Interior front of the 2021 Volvo V60?

Inside, Volvo has taken cues from the clean, Scandinavian interior design first introduced in the 90 Series cars, raising the bar in the segment with natural materials and new details on the dashboard and instrument panel. The new 2021 Volvo V60’s interior resembles the 2020 V60’s interiors which is one of the cleanest designs on the market. The usage of premium materials all over the 2021 Volvo V60's interior has a very prompt premium appeal.

The rear seats follow the same suit. They are large and offer decent thigh support. Furthermore, the legroom is large enough and doesn’t seem cramped. Three full-size adults can occupy the rear seats comfortably. The wagon-structure of the cabin coupled with the panoramic sunroof makes the cabin very airy. Also, the cargo space offered in the 2021 V60 is adequate for an average family, but is not the largest, at least in this comparison.

The Subaru Outback manages to offer the most cargo space while the VW Golf Sportwagen comes in second with a cargo space of 30.4 cu.ft. The wagon body construction helps in added cargo flexibility with which you can also transport larger and taller luggage with ease. Foldable second-row seating also comes into play here.

The interior of the 2021 Volvo V60 continues to sport a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system capable of offering high-definition picture quality. It is further mated to a Harman Kardon Sound system integrated with a sub-woofer that offers phenomenal sound quality.

Apart from the standard controls, Volvo has unified all of the various creature comfort features into the tall touchscreen which has helped declutter the otherwise crowded dashboard that would have looked out of place with the minimal design language. They require harder touch inputs than normal. Moreover, some features are quite complex and require time to get used to it.

  • 12.3-inch Digital Driver Display (T6 and T8)

What changes are made on the Exterior front of the 2021 Volvo V60?

Like the S60 sedan, the V60 carries the proud and confident face of Volvo’s design language, along with classic Volvo styling cues. Key features include the iconic “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlight design, the new grille and Volvo Iron Mark, and the Volvo word in bold letters on the rear. New features are subtle and include a new 18-inch alloy design and blacked-out exterior accents for the Momentum and R-Design trims respectively.

The 2021 Volvo V60 is designed like its bigger siblings which are based on Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) which accounts for a stylish sedan-like design. The transformation is such that the rear resembles a regular sedan. A distinct and prominent character line through the rear fenders differentiates it from the V90. Volvo’s design is quite simple and consistent and something that everybody loves about Volvo cars.
