2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Samuel McKinsley's image

Samuel McKinsley Content Writer Updated on: November 30, 2019

The Japanese manufacturer has welcomed us into the new decade of their automotive production with complete refreshes of their babies giving us facelifted models, reskinned interiors, upgraded engines and restyled exteriors. Then there comes the outlander sport, which has been the average dude in the class and has received somewhat impressive updates but at the same time remains the same old outlander we all have been discussing in the past decade.

See detailed review »

After being on sale in the United States since 2011, we all thought that this coming decade marks for an all new design but that’s not the case as Mitsubishi made their way with minor changes in the Outlander Sport such as an inch bigger infotainment system and subtle exterior restyling. However, to our disappointment, we did not witness any mechanical changes in the vehicle.

Given the tough and edge to edge competition in the segment and many major rivals yet to receive fresh updates from their respective manufacturers, we are yet to comment if the Mitsubishi Outlander sport will make a mark in its segment, but for now let’s just enjoy whatever new quirks that we’ve received from one of our favourite japanese automakers!

Upgrading to the GT trim priced at $27,990 gets you a 2.4L engine as well as collision mitigation and warning safety features.

We Recommend

The GT trim adds multiple features aiding the crossover edge up in the segment, without which the Outlander Sport would feel out of place in 2020. The 2.4L engine with a CVT is a must have, while the 5-speed manual with the 2.0L engine isn’t particularly inspiring to drive.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Engine

Well, we won’t really ask you to expect a lot from the numbers that the Japanese vehicle offers. You won’t really be impressed with the sluggish engine which has been unchanged in 2020. With a rather drowsy 148 hp 2.0L inline-4. Even the discretionary 168 hp 2.4L motor in the GT model neglects to intrigue the driver.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Engine Bay

As the rev meter goes up the circles, the 2 litre motor starts buzzing like a beehive, we don’t reckon if that will remind you that you are sitting in a sporty crossover. The all-wheel drive is a plus point amongst these negatives but don’t expect your car to handle off-road driving with the ridiculously low engine power for a sporty crossover.

The lack of an impressive engine is however commonplace among compact crossovers, but the Mazda CX-3 and Subaru Crosstrek are the ones to break the trend. Mazda brings quite a punchy engine to the table, with plenty of low end torque, while the Subaru’s engine meant to pull the Crosstrek through rough terrain performs better than most competition.

Acceleration

Indeed, one need not expect a lot from the acceleration times considering the sluggish motor in the Outlander Sport. 60 mph comes in 8.9 seconds leaving the SUV wheezing for breath as the motor attempts to keep updated with the gauge cluster.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Front View

Nevertheless, one thing that makes us happy is that the 2.4L motor makes the Mitsubishi quicker than its rivals, timing 8.5 seconds to 60.

Despite the smallest engine, the Buick Encore is the fastest to 60 mph sprint in 8.4 seconds. Next one to reach is the Mazda CX-3 in 8.6 seconds. The Hyundai Kona and the Toyota C-HR are the last ones to finish taking more than 10 seconds to 60 mph.

Ride and Handling

The ride is pretty good in the city, however, the suspension has difficulty coping with unexpected undulations and high speed corners. Sudden acceleration or braking makes the chassis lurch and body roll may not be severe, but is present nonetheless.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Front View

As ironic as it may seem, even engaging the Sport mode on the Outlander Sport, doesn’t add dynamism to the ride. It makes the engine noisier and the suspensions harsher, but has no effect on the throttle response or the acceleration figures. However, the small wheelbase entails superb maneuverability and parkability.

Braking

The brakes on the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport are surprisingly robust and strong, performing a notch above the rest of the features on this crossover.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Brakes

Strangely, the 11.9-inch discs on the rear are larger than the ones on the front.

In comparison to that, the rivals have smaller brake discs and don’t feel as responsive as the Outlander’s. The Hyundai Kona and the Chevrolet Trax still come with drum brakes on the rear wheels, not sure if they’re going retro, or still stuck in the past.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Fuel Economy

Neither does the Outlander Sport perform well on the track, nor is it exceptionally efficient. You’d be lucky to get 30 miles from a gallon on gasoline under ideal conditions on the highway, while its competition like the Mazda CX-3 and the Honda HR-V can manage to hit 34.

In the city, the economy is worse than you’d expect, performing 24 miles to the gallon, with most of the competition managing upto 28 miles to the gallon. The Mazda CX-3 shines through with 29 mpg in the city.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Interior

8.0/10

A lot of disappointment comes in this segment. We expected Mitsubishi to revamp the interiors to give a more plush and opulent feel in the car but reality didn’t come much to our likes. Although, we don’t really think that the manufacturer would’ve even thought of making an effort in refreshing the interior given the miniscule difference in the price point.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Seats

Unfortunately, The interior is flooded with hard plastic and cloth upholstery, premium materials have completely been ignored for the interiors. The seats are flat and lack any form of support elements. Neither do they provide support through corners, nor do they make the ride comfortable for long distances.

The cabin lacks sound deadening, so the engine and road noise seeps into the cabin a bit more than appreciated. In terms of passenger capacity, the competitors like the Buick Encore and Mazda CX-3 have a lot more to offer.

Infotainment System

Although the infotainment panel is the only place where soft-touch plastics can be found, it seems like an aftermarket add-on. The switches and knobs feel flimsy and lack any sort of premium feel. The higher trims get a 7.0-inch touchscreen which isn’t as responsive as a 2020 crossover should have.

Cargo Capacity

With the seats up, the Mitsubishi offers good capacity to carry your luggage. When you fold down the rear seats, you get almost 50 cubic feet of capacity in the Outlander Sport.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Cargo Space

However, due to the large ground clearance, the loading height is a bit taller than the rivals.

If you want a capable carrier, the Honda HR-V is a great choice. Not only does it come with class-leading capacity, the low ground clearance makes it easy to load and unload boxes. Here the Mazda is the one to lag behind, with subpar trunk volume behind the rear seats.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Exterior

One thing that Nissan has finally decided to take up a notch in the new decade is the exterior of the car. The vehicle will now be even more appealing to buyers who are looking for a tougher looking SUV under budget. All thanks to the Japanese giant that has managed to take away the vague and dated looks that involved wide-eyed headlights and a very tired looking grille, with freshly baked exterior styling taking directly from the recently introduced Eclipse Cross.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 3rd Quarter View

Slim headlights, wide-set fog lamps involving angular turn-signal parts are a few elements that buyers will see as a completely refreshed component altogether.

On the contrary, Mitsubishi has kept things relatively subdued out back as not many changes were made to the SUV’s rear involving the same taillights, which although now come with full LED lighting as standard - and the bumper been notched up with a skid-plate flourish.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Safety

The Outlander Sport may not have made a mark with its performance, but Mitsubishi has added a whole host of driver assistance and safety features to keep the crossover competitive in 2020. Some of the features you’ll find are:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control
  • Side Impact Beams
  • Dual Stage Driver And Passenger Seat-Mounted Side Airbags
  • Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Dual Stage Driver And Passenger Front Airbags
  • Curtain 1st And 2nd Row Airbags
  • Airbag Occupancy Sensor
  • Driver Knee Airbag
  • Rear Child Safety Locks
  • Back-Up Camera

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Competition

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport vs Honda HR-V

The Honda HR-V is a compact crossover with performance no better than the Outlander Sport. The issues like droning engine noise, lack of sound deadening and premium materials in the cabin, persist even in the Honda. However, the HR-V shines through with a best in class passenger and cargo capacity, while maintaining a small footprint. Even the fuel economy is good enough to make you ignore the lack of oomph in the engine. If you want a compact daily driver, but not as tiny as a hatchback, Honda HR-V is a good option to consider.

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport vs Mazda CX-3

The Mazda surpasses the Mitsubishi in almost every aspect, apart from cargo capacity. The engine has a smoother power delivery, every upshift feels decisive and downshifts make the engine sing beautifully. The cabin is not just spacious and ergonomically well laid out, the materials don’t feel like cheap plastic, a departure from the trend so far. From the outside, the Mazda CX-3 is one of the best looking compact SUVs, with tasteful styling elements and appealing curves. Between the two, the Mazda CX-3 is clear winner.

2020 Mazda CX-3
2020 Mazda CX-3

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport vs Subaru Crosstrek

The Crosstrek is decidedly a more SUV-ish crossover compared to the more hatchback-like compacts like Honda. It displays clear signs of its off-road capability with its massive ground clearance, rugged exterior and the X-mode from Subaru. Comparatively the Outlander Sport is left in the dust, not just in the badlands, but also on the highways. Apart from that, the interior is not better, clad with hard plastics and cloth upholstery. If you’re looking for some adventure, you could take the Crosstrek on a weekender into the woods, rather than the Outlander Sport.

2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Final Verdict

Exquisite exterior styling along with subtle interior changes but similar engine capacities, not at all impressive interior quality and a very appealing price point. Mixed emotions is what we have after witnessing the all new Outlander by the Japanese Manufacturer.

We all have heartily wished that the Outlander Sport being Mitsubishi’s best selling model in the U.S. market would’ve received better and even more expensive updates given the mark of a new decade. But undoubtedly, the Outlander Sport’s minor styling tweaks have given a strong impression of newness. Like we said in the beginning, we are yet to make a comment if the car will be, if not the best, but one of the best in its segment. For the time being, we are content with the models current styling and appealing price point offered by its manufacturer.
