MINI has managed to keep it’s iconic lineup alive for decades now. This is by no means a small feat. One thing can be accounted for, every time you seat yourself behind a MINI, the ride is going to be as aggressive as it is engaging. Bring in the John Cooper Works potion to this hardtop 2-door, and things literally get out of hand with more panache and even more character.

The 2020 MINI John Cooper Works hardtop 2-door is one such pumped up MINI which has 60 years of motoring heritage in it. It produces 228 horses and 236 pound-feet of torque from the beefed-up 2.0L turbocharged inline-four motor which is now coupled to an 8-Speed shiftable Automatic transmission. It easily places the MINI among the segment leaders in terms of acceleration and performance figures We are a bit disappointed as the 6-Speed manual is no more offered but they sure had to personalize it and thus they also provide you with your choice of transmission as an optional Package. Can the funky little retro car hold up with the latest bunch?

WE recommend

We would recommend you to put your money bang in between. The Signature trim priced at $34900 adds a lot of useful features that focus on creature comfort and safety. It is a good buy for the marginal bump in price.

2020 Mini Hardtop 2 Door John Cooper Works Hatchback Engine and Performance

7.5/10

This car houses the legendary JCW performance kit. The emphasis has mainly been to strip it out and making it a lot more raw for a car that in itself pretty punchy. The base trim offers a 2.0-liter inline-4 which churns out 228 horsepower. It comes mated to an 8-speed shiftable automatic. Although gone are the days wherein you could get unrivaled fun to drive experience with a manual transmission, nevertheless, the 8-speed automatic does not disappoint you at all, as it comes with the same zest that MINI is known for. Peak torque comes in at 1250rpm, so reaching higher speeds requires lesser effort from the driver

The MINI is positioned right in between the low on power Honda Civic Si and the most powerful Hyundai Veloster which are both cheaper. So, JCW has worked its magic here and there is no comparison whatsoever in sheer performance.

How fast is it from 0-60?

This engine at all times gives you the thrill you might expect from a MINI, by delivering a fair bit of fun as you press the throttle hard enough. It does deliver some fabulous performance figures, a 0-60 mph time of 5.9 seconds is pretty quick enough. Lack of power is not something that can be accustomed to MINI Cooper JWC because on engaging the sport mode, the throttle is more responsive and makes way for a thrilling drive.

The Hyundai Veloster still remains at the top with its acceleration time of 5.5 seconds. The Hyundai recipe has so far been working brilliantly because even though it houses the same 2.0-liter engine and is heavier than the rest, it still is the fastest of the lot. Honda Civic is the slowest.

How well does it handle?

Mini Cooper has been emphasized to be widely known as a vehicle who is in dire need to please its driver. The Go-Cart handling nature of the MINI has obviously been retained for the MINI Hardtop 2-door JCW It does come with a sport-tuned suspension, although comfort takes a back seat in the MINI Cooper factory. And with the addition of electronic Locking differential, hard-core MINI enthusiasts are set to have the time of their life with the precise handling. Around corners, it feels zippy, with it’s heavy yet sharp and responsive steering wheel which bring about a sense of confidence in you to thrash it out on those curvy bends. Although MINI’s firm sports-tuned Suspension can make the ride quality a bit rough.

What about the Braking performance?

With the help of Electronic brake distribution and anti-lock braking systems that always keep the vehicle under control, the MINI shows improvement in its stopping distance. The 2020 MINI Cooper MINI Cooper Hard-top JCW is equipped with 11.6-inch rotors in the front and 10.2-inch rotors in the rear. MINI also has a trick up its sleeve called the Dynamic Stability Control(DSC) which monitors steering input and applies correct brake pressure to individual brakes to maintain the correct line, if it does not follow a uniform line.

Surely not the biggest brakes of the lot, but what it lacks in size adds up for an added bite. The 2020 Volkswagen GTi has the biggest rotor discs all round. At 13-inches, the Hyundai Veloster’s rotors are only a tiny bit smaller than the class-leading Golf GTi. The MINI Hardtop 2-door JCW’s braking performance is the best, even when equipped with the smallest rotors of the bunch, it comes to standstill from 60 mph in about 111 ft, which is solely because of its light and nimble body structure.

2020 Mini Hardtop 2 Door John Cooper Works Hatchback Fuel Economy

5.5/10

For a pure-bred Performance machine that boasts the JCW badge, and with Practicality taking a back seat, the MINI Cooper ironically holds the badge of the most fuel-efficient car among its rivals. It gets an EPA-estimated combined mileage of 29 miles to the gallon. But it does take a turn for the worse with its tiny 11.6-gallon fuel tank.

The competition is not that far behind as all the cars in this segment are on par with each other in terms of fuel efficiency. The Hyundai Veloster has the least fuel efficiency figures of 22/29/25 in city/highway/combined areas. The 2.0-Liter inline 4 gives the driver a good dose of performance, without having to compromise on fuel efficiency.

2020 Mini Hardtop 2 Door John Cooper Works Hatchback Interior

7.0/10

One thing that has been constant in the MINI line-up is that they don’t mess up the way the beautiful interior feels like, and that is a huge point to the designers in the BMW factory. The interior is really nice and is actually upscale by using premium materials all over. But just because something seems to be working, doesn’t necessarily mean that it can’t do better! Hence we do expect quite a lot from the upcoming cars in the MINI line-up.

Seating and comfort

The joy of buying a MINI is to what extent can you personalize it, and MINI provides you with a plethora of interior cosmetic options to choose from. MINI has impressive interior space and legroom in spite of its wacky design, but that space is only limited for the front Passengers. The front seats have optional adjustable lumbar and thigh support. Leather upholstery adds a tinge of luxury into the sporty cabin. The rear seats in the MINI are of no use whatsoever, as it is extremely cramped. The rear seats are suited for the kids at best, and a bare minimum of a single adult might be able to fit in the rear.

The VW GTi and the Honda Civic Si are proper hatchbacks that can easily seat 5 passengers. As the MINI is a compact car, it is more suited to front passengers only. In this case, Honda Civic Si is at the forefront, with larger than usual cabin space in the rear, as that is not what you’d expect from a car which is cheaper by 9 grand.

Infotainment

No Matter, which year you’re in the design of the infotainment system for the MINI does not change, which stands out as pure-bred Classic. That iconic round panel which houses the infotainment screen is pretty dope. The best part, all the switches are toggle switches especially the Start/Stop button. The graphics used in the Infotainment system are pretty good. With an extra grand or so, you can update your infotainment screen form 6.5-inch to the maximum 8.8-inch touchscreen system. The infotainment system can be controlled by a knob behind the shifter.

How much Cargo can it hold?

Smaller luggage is what you’d expect from a car that barely accommodates its four Passengers. The Space behind the seats is at the bare minimum volume of 8.7 cu-ft. There isn’t much sense in folding down the rear seats, which fold down in a 60/40 split, as it provides next to none improvement in terms of volume. Although one could argue, that for a car this size, the MINI provides ample cargo space.

The MINI is a sporty-looking small hatchback, that is sure to put a smile on your face. If not for its small boot and cramped rear seats, it is definitely worth buying even if it comes at a hefty price tag. The exhaust note is the best there is, which comes as an optional Package, which boosts up the price a bit. But none of it matters as it is the best looking with carbon- fiber tips and the best sounding one too. Period! MINI has not changed its recipe with bits and pieces of the old iconic design still evident in today’s cars.

2020 Mini Hardtop 2 Door John Cooper Works Hatchback Safety

7.0/10

In terms of reliability, MINI Cooper Hard-top JCW has had no recent recalls lately, further deducing that it is as reliable as ever. The MINI comes with an Ultra-Rigid Body which reduces body torque and provides super-tight handling. The addition of active safety features, which are now standard in the 2020 version has been a great help in getting the 2020 MINI Cooper Hard-top JCW an overall 4 stars out of 5 from the NHTSA. MINI also scores well in testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety(IIHS). BMW has also made it a compulsion of adding the active safety feature called the Active Driving Assistant, which adds up to a host of other great features.

Safety Features

On the safety, front, MINI is loaded with active safety aids such as-

  • Brake Drying and 4 Wheel ABS
  • Post-Collision Safety System
  • Stability Control
  • Emergency Brake Assist
  • Traction Control
  • Side Impact beams
  • Drive and Passenger Knee Airbag
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Active Driving Assistant-It includes Forward Collision Warning and Automatic emergency braking. (only in the top trim)
  • Vehicle Anti-theft System

MINI Cooper hard-top 2 door JCW vs Hyundai Veloster

The Hyundai Veloster is the best in terms of interior, styling and rugged looks. It is much more powerful than the rest and is the fastest of the line to get to 60. When compared to the Mini 2dr, the Hyundai Veloster scores high on space and practicality but misses out on the character that comes with Mini 2dr's ride handling and a higher degree of personalization.

2020 Hyundai Veloster

MINI Cooper hard-top 2 door JCW vs Volkswagen Golf GTi

Both these cars are the very best in terms of providing mind-boggling performance figures. The Golf GTi is cheaper and produces more torque. Although it hosts less fuel economy than the MINI, the Golf is a very capable hatch. But where it lacks to the MINI is in terms of riding maneuverability and driveability, it more than makes up for it in terms of the automatic transmission, wherein the GTI’s DSG is better than the MINI’s 8-speed shiftable Automatic which feels a bit sluggish.

2020 Volkswagen Golf GTi

MINI Cooper hard-top 2 door JCW vs Honda Civic Si

Apart from the cheaper price tag and the fact that it has more cabin space in the rear. There is basically no competition in any sense as the Civic produces much less power and is not at all fuel-efficient. A bad fuel economy and low power produced by the Civic Si makes the MINI Cooper hardtop 2-dr JCW the clear winner in this scenario.

2020 Honda Civic Si

2020 Mini Hardtop 2 Door John Cooper Works Hatchback Final Verdict

Performance-driven and nimble, that’s what the MINI Cooper hard-top 2 dr JCW stands for. Its go-cart stance is what makes it so appealing. The sheer pleasure you derive from driving this is the main reason enthusiasts would go for the MINI as it is definitely a good deal for that price tag. The Britain manufacturer has done a fantastic job of bringing the best of power and performance in addition to razor-sharp handling and precision.
