For some, change is infuriating while for others, it is a chance to grow. Following the same principle, Mini brings forth its most anticipated and power-packed offering with a ‘Mini’ Badge. A family crossover on steroids, the next-gen, 2020 Countryman JCW comes as a proper performance-oriented vehicle.

While carrying forward a lot of design cues from the outgoing model, the new Countryman JCW or John Cooper Works edition equips a brand new powerhouse at its heart to bring more enthusiasm to the drives. While it comes with a slightly inflated price, it surely won’t affect your bank balance and will definitely add a graceful appeal to your garage.

Which trim to go for?

For 2020, Mini simplifies the trim tree and hence makes choosing the right car easy for the buyers. But if looking for the performance-oriented vehicle, Mini offers the Countryman JCW as a standalone and a fully loaded trim, and we also recommend it as it offers the best experience of luxury, practicality, and performance.

2020 Mini Countryman John Cooper Works Engine and Performance

7.0/10

Under the hood, the 2020 Countryman JCW comes with an all-new 2.0 Liter Inline 4-engine and its output is the highest in the segment. With 301 horses and 331 lb-ft of torque coming out of its heart, the new JCW stands as the most powerful Mini to date. The new JCW comes equipped with an 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission for better performance and quick shifting in between the gears.

Both the Countryman JCW and the Cooper S comes with a powerful engine that feels much smoother and faster than the base 1.5 L engine. The standard engine has an output of 134 hp, which is puny and feels quite underpowered. The 2.0 L engine, on the S model, produces 189 hp thereby making it perfect for everyday driving.

Finally, the top of the line, Countryman JCW equips the all-new 2L i4 engine that churns out a massive 301 hp along with 331 lb-ft. of torque. This engine is perfect for tearing the track and even for the daily drives. The engine note is full of bass and sounds a lot heavier than the outgoing variant. Also, it offers rumbling sounds along with crackles and pops.

Even with the same platform, the 2020 Countryman JCW outperforms the X1 and offers better stats than the Bimmer. Mini leads the pack with the highest amount of power (301hp) coming out of its engine. BMW X1 is an underpowered SUV that and thus stands at the end of the line with the least power output of 228 hp. Finally, the XC40 stands in the middle with a power output of 248 hp.

Also, Mini offers an 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission, while the manual transmission is still under technical evaluation process. The new 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission feels a lot more refined than what the outgoing model offers.

How fast is this JCW?

All thanks to the new 301 hp mill, the 2020 Countryman JCW comes with a massive hike in the horses and thus delivers far better acceleration than its rivals and other models in its segment. The 2020 Countryman JCW offers various driving modes. The sport mode, however, changes the character of the car and makes it more agile and responsive.

2020 Mini Countryman JCW comes with a massive hike in the horsepower

In terms of the performance in the real world, the Mini feels enthusiastic to rev to the redline and go all guns blazing. Overtaking cars in traffic or out in the motorway, won't be much of an issue in this powerful Mini.

When compared to its competitors for the 0-60 test, the JCW (5.1 sec) takes the lead followed by the XC40 (6.1 sec) taking the second place. Finally, the Bimmer (6.3 sec) stands at the end of the pack as it stands as the slowest of all.

How good is Braking performance?

The brake pedal feels with the new Countryman JCW light and offers light to moderate amount of resistance, however, the brakes are not as harsh as on the S and the base model and thus helps in the overall handling of the car.

2020 Mini Countryman JCW offers a better braking experience

The brakes have been well-calibrated, to tame the massive amount of horsepower on tap in this Mini. On sudden application, the brakes feel reassuring and help stop the car, in no time at all. Heat dissipation from the rotors is good as well and there is enough braking force available at all instances.

Unlike the outgoing model, the 2020 Countryman JCW offers a better braking experience, both on city roads and on the tracks. Hence, it stands as a perfect car for all.

What about Ride and Handling???

When it comes to the driving dynamics, the 2020 Countryman JCW feels refreshing and lively. The drive is smooth, poised and zippy. It manages the corners really well due to its stable and well-weighted steering wheel. The car filters out any vibrations and jerks caused due to potholes impressively and thus makes the riding experience plush and stable.

All thanks to its slightly tweaked chassis and two-mode adaptive dampers, the riding experience has improved significantly from the last generation and thus makes the occupants feel comfortable.

Handling is on the heavier side but still manages to offer a good experience. While starting in the normal driving mode, the acceleration feels a bit sluggish and thus requires one to mash the throttle a bit more for an aggressive start. The rumbling sound from the engine can be heard along with some crackles and pops. Because of the presence of the upgraded exhaust system, the exhaust note becomes full of burble and bass. The automatic gearbox feels sublime and smooth and makes this car feel like a normal JCW on steroids.

2020 Mini Countryman John Cooper Works Fuel Economy

4.0/10

In terms of fuel economy, both the Bimmer and the Countryman share the pole position, followed by the XC40 standing behind the two. With an overall fuel economy of 31 MPG, the X1 leads the pack, followed by the Countryman JCW and the XC40 with 30 MPG. However, owing to the massive 16-gallon fuel tank onboard, you will have a minimum driving range of 386 miles. Considering the kind of performance on offer, these figures are truly respectable from a vehicle with such performance.

Fuel tank capacity is also an important factor and to increase the miles, both the X1 and the Countryman JCW offer a big 16.1 gal. of fuel tank. The XC40 offers a bit smaller tank of 14.2 gallon.

2020 Mini Countryman John Cooper Works Interior

7.5/10

The interior quality of the 2020 Countryman is really up to the mark and offers some near-luxury accommodations. Mini offers leather upholstery as standard which sets it apart from its competitors out there. The interior feels quite spacious. The front row feels quite roomy and even a 6-ft tall person can fit in there with ease.

2020 Mini Countryman JCW is really up to the mark and offers some near-luxury accommodations

The mini has added some quirks to the interior like an oversized circular central console, retro-style dashboard and toggle switches for various functions like engine start/stop, lighting, and a slider for the iconic panoramic roof.

The interior feels quiet when the car is in Normal mode, owing to the presence of good noise insulation in the car. However, the engine sounds do come inside the cabin, making the ride less monotonous. The plastics used in various places feel quite rigid and of good quality. There are also a number of small-item storage spaces present inside the cabin.

Getting in at the rear feels difficult due to large seats and small doors, but once inside, there is still some place left for the knee to stretch. Also, the headroom at the rear is fine. There is a huge bar in the center that blocks the panoramic view of the panoramic sunroof for the people sitting at the back.

What to expect on the Infotainment front?

The infotainment consists of Mini’s signature circular infotainment console which has a 6.5” touch screen. The display is quite vibrant and is very responsive. The graphics are of high resolution.

The infotainment software is a redesigned version of BMW’s iDrive system. Mini has added some great animations and transitions in the infotainment system which can be seen while navigating through the menus. There is also an analyzer page which tells the driver about fuel efficiency for that ride, which is a clever addition to the infotainment. Compared to the iDrive system, Mini’s infotainment looks a lot more intuitive and user-friendly. The infotainment system can also be operated by a knob present in the center console.

What about the Cargo carrying capacity?

The cargo space provided by Mini its latest offering is quite less when compared to its rivals in the segment. The 2020 Countryman JCW offers a decent boot space of just 17.6 cu.ft. while BMW’s X1 takes the lead as it offers the largest cargo space (27.1 cu.ft.) among its rivals. The XC40 takes the middle place as it offers 20.7 cu.ft. of boot space.

The Countryman is the smallest car in terms if length among its rivals, but is quite spacious and comfortable. Comparing the overall dimensions, the Countryman easily maintains its equilibrium between size and spacious interiors easily. The XC40, being the heaviest of all, also offers a decent amount of room.

2020 Mini Countryman JCW

Since the time BMW took over the reins of Mini, modern-day Minis can be now be treated as segment benchmarks. The build of the Mini is top-notch and the overall cabin has been very well laid out. The plastics feel a notch above the rivals. The finishing of the dashboard is impeccable and the overall, you feel like you are sitting in a car that's from a segment above. The stitching on the seats and the dashboard has been immaculately done and the leather seats, add to the feel of sitting inside the cabin.

With many things in common, BMW owned Mini offers a unique car to compete with the X1. The new Countryman JCW offers a unique experience but when its price is taken into account, the X1 takes the crown as the worthy option along with some other points that make the Bimmer a perfect choice. However, if you want a performance-oriented family crossover that offers a premium experience, then the Countryman JCW is a great car to go for.
