The 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible will be the latest introduction to the same lineup, with similar head-turning looks and compactness. The 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible introduces minor tweaks inside and out. Upgrades include the standard digital instrument cluster in the Signature and Iconic trims. It is powered by the same 1.5L Twin Power Turbo 3-cylinder engine that punches out 134 hp and 162 lb-ft of peak torque.

The interior gets upscaled soft and smooth surfaces, with a bigger 8.8-inch infotainment display, fitted beautifully inside a circular shaped panel. The aesthetic appeal is maintained with oval-shaped headlamps in the front and sporty racing stripes on the hood. The 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible is a peppy and cheering ride but has to keep an eye on rivals like Fiat 124 Spider, Mazda MX-5 Miata, and the iconic Volkswagen Beetle Convertible.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

Mini, owned by the German giant BMW, has a beautiful lineup of compact cars, that challenge the full-size vehicles, on fronts like comfort, performance, and even aesthetic appeal. The Mini Cooper has been one of the top contenders when it comes to athletic and zippy handling along with a premium package. The design is still reminiscent of the iconic Mini and BMW has certainly uplifted the hatchback by throwing in some of their technology at it. The 2021 model is basically the same as the outgoing model except for the addition of a stick shift transmission which makes a return after quite a long time. The new 6-speed manual transmission finds its way to both the Cooper and Cooper S models.

2021 Mini Cooper Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

Mini Cooper, owned by BMW, retains the same trust and reliability globally as shared by the German owner. The build quality has been supreme and has also been awarded 4 out of 5 stars by NHTSA in its crash tests. The Mini Cooper brand is well-known for its compact cars that go along with enhanced safety features.

Reliability and Ownership cost

Mini is internationally known for its small and chuckable cars which are premium and practical enough. With that said, build quality and post-sale services are not the best in the business. At the same time, the 2019 Mini Cooper Convertible scored 80 out of 100 JD Power reports. The reliability can also rely on the grand owner of the Mini Cooper, the BMW. As both companies share the technology, Mini Cooper, gets the best equipment but the same fact tends to drive the costs sky high.

True Cost to Own

The cost of ownership plays a major role while buying a new car. The actual living costs may vary depending on the state and the way the car is used but on average it tells the real price of the car over time.Mini Cooper is certainly not a cheap car to own. The asking price for the top-end model with all the bells and whistles can go as high as $35,000. Spare parts can cost a bomb which drives the ownership costs higher than usual.

The 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible is offered with a 4-year/50,000 miles limited and powertrain warranty, followed by 4-year/unlimited-miles roadside assistance by the brand. The Mini Cooper also offers 12-year/unlimited-miles corrosion warranty and 3-year/36,000 miles of maintenance.

Limited Warranty

Four Year or 50,000 miles

Powertrain Warranty

Four Year or 50,000 miles

Complimentary scheduled maintenance

Three years or 36,000 miles

None of the rivals offer maintenance as offered by the Mini Cooper, while the Volkswagen gives better warranties as compared to the Cooper.

Miles Per Dollar

The 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible offers an impressive combined mpg of 33, while a small 11.6-gallon fuel tank brings down the range. The average fuel cost at the time of writing is $2.5 across the states which brings the total to $0.13 per mile. All these prices are subject to change from state to state and are a rough estimate just to give an idea of the yearly ownership cost of Mini Cooper Convertible.

2021 Mini Cooper Buying Advice

The 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible is a lovable little hatchback, a premium convertible that offers an agile performance and a luxurious cabin. The Cooper Convertible packs some real premium materials and infotainment features inside the breezy cabin. The stylish racing stripes give it a sporty look, while a short body and low ground clearance give it sporty handling as well. The Signature trim hits the sweet spot of the range and comes with a sporty dual-exit exhaust at the back along with upgraded wheels and other sporty bits.

Is buying a used Mini Cooper Convertible a good idea?

The third generation Mini Cooper has been on sale since 2013 so going for a year or two old Mini is not a bad option. outgoing 2020 models were offered exclusively with an automatic transmission so if you are looking for fun and engaging to drive Mini, look for 2019 models or older. In 2019, Mini introduced a newer infotainment system derived from the iDrive system with Apple CarPlay connectivity. A pre-owned Mini Cooper Convertible should be cheap on the pocket as they depreciate at a fast rate.

2021 Mini Cooper Engine and Performance

The 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible retains the small, punchy 1.5L Twin Power Turbo motor that churns out 134-hp of max power and 162 lb-ft of peak torque. While the Cooper S gets a 2.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-four-cylinder engine or the B48 engine seen on the BMW 3 series and the X1, which develops 189 hp and 207 lb-ft. Both the engines are paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission but new for the 2021 model is the return of the slick 6-speed manual.

2021 Mini Cooper Convertible Engine

The Mini sends its power to the front wheels exclusively, and the peak torque kicks in real early, at 1350 RPMs which give the Mini Convertible a fun to drive characteristic and is easy to drive in the traffic. There’s so much torque down low in the rev band that the driver can stick the hatch in one gear and cruise effortlessly. There is no AWD option available for the Mini Cooper.

The Cooper Convertible is the least powerful drop top in this comparison and the odd one out too as it powers the front wheels which robs away some of the fun that the MX-5 Miata and the Fiat 124 has to offer.

2021 Mini Cooper Convertible Acceleration and Braking Performance

The 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible is a superb small package. The nimble hatch gets its power from a 1.5L Twin power turbo engine. The power is not why this car is exciting to drive.

2021 Mini Cooper Convertible Accelerate 0-60 MPH Just In 6.2 Sec

It certainly won’t pin you back to your seat. With that said, it did well in our flat out acceleration test. The Mini took just 6.2 seconds from standstill to reach 60 mph, and can reach a top speed of 149 mph.

When it comes to braking, the convertible comes to a halt from 60 mph with just 134 ft. The Cooper is plagued by its heavy curb weight which results in a long braking distance. The Cooper Convertible, though agile in the corners, ties to the second spot with the Fiat 124 Spider, while the Miata holds the winning trophy.

2021 Mini Cooper Fuel Economy

The 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible brings fun, with a lot of savings. The Cooper Convertible's efficient engine delivers an impressive 28 mpg and 38 mpg on city and highway runs respectively. With that, a decent fuel capacity of 11.6-gallon means that the Mini can cover the most distance in one tank of gas.

The Cooper Convertible comes out like a champ, when it comes to fuel economy, while others aren't that far behind. Part of the reason why the Cooper Convertible did better than its lighter cabin is the three-pot turbocharged engine under the hood. It delivers decent power without getting heavy on the pocket.

2021 Mini Cooper Interior

The interiors of the 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible is airy and breezy, and with the soft top on, it still fits in tall people comfortably. The Cooper Convertible seats 4 in its decent and refined cabin. 2021 model brings a digital instrument cluster as a standard fitment in the "Iconic Trim" and optional in the "Signature Trim". Other than this, the spacing and the seating configuration remains the same, with the rear occupants having lesser legroom than the front seats.

2021 Mini Cooper Convertible Seating Arrangement

The cabin invites the passengers with comfortably bolstered seats instead of regular ones. The seats have synthetic leather wrapping which can be upgraded to genuine leather for the ultimate luxurious experience. The heated seats are offered as an option in the upper trims. The cabin is flooded with the circular designed panels as a homage to the iconic Mini when carefully observed, while a 7.6 cu-ft boot is big enough to fill for a family weekend trip. The roof opens and folds away easily in just 18 seconds, while it is operable even while on the move.

Compared to the rivals like Fiat and Mazda, the Cooper Convertible fits in 2 more passengers. When it comes to cargo space, the four-seater Mini takes an edge with more room at the back. In comparison, the Fiat 124 Spyder offers only 4.6 cu-ft of storage behind the rear seats, and the Mazda MX-5 offers a slightly better designed boot with 4.9 cu-ft of storage capacity.

How’s the 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible infotainment system?

The 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible retains the center circular infotainment panel which features a 6.5-inch display that supports AM/FM Radio, SiriusXM, Bluetooth, and offers USB ports and an auxiliary input jack. The entertainment department is handled by a standard six-speaker audio system that works well for such a compact car.

2021 Mini Cooper Convertible Dashboard

The features get upgraded in higher trims. The smaller display can be replaced by a bigger 8.8-inch infotainment display with a touchpad interface, which supports navigation technology and Apple CarPlay. The system is certainly the best of the bunch as it is backed up by BMW’s slick iDrive system. While a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system can cheer up the audiophiles from deep within. The standard features list includes dual-zone climate control, a head-up display, HD radio, MP3 player, and much more.

2021 Mini Cooper Exterior

The 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible hits nostalgia hard with the iconic look that has remained one of the most recognisable designs in the world. The front fascia still includes the traditional oval-shaped headlamps with associated LED DRLs while the rear fits Union Jack inspired tail lights. The Mini Cooper Convertible gets a handsome and sporty stance with shorter length but taller height. It has definitly grown in size but it still feels relatively small when compared to other hatchbacks of the same segment. It stays true to it’s iconic image of a go-kart for the road.

2021 Mini Cooper Convertible Third Quarter View

The additional racing stripes on the hood and center dual-exhaust pipes in the rear give it an attractive look that makes the Mini Cooper more than just a compact car, but a Mini Cooper. Other eye-catching exterior features include 17- inch alloy wheels, all-Season tires, front fog lights, "MINI" logo embedded welcome lights on both the doors, Auto-Levelling Headlamps with LED DRLs with delay-off, black fender flares, power convertible roof with lining, automatic roll-over protection, rear bumper with black rub strip, black front bumper insert, black grille with chrome surround and chrome front windshield moldings.

Costly on gas

Pros - Stylish interior design

Cons - I only get 22 mpg in the city

Costly to keep "This cabin design is beautiful but I only get around 22 mpg in the city which I feel is very less. Although the engine is powerful, I have driven more powerful ones which deliver around 25miles on an average even after quite a lot of time. Its a disappointment with the amount of gas it consumes daily." Big outlet, lots of options, vehicles, mostly premium ones.

Love it!

Pros - Everything but cargo space

Cons - Thinking...

Small and peppy For the most part, I do like my Mini Cooper driving experience. It is smooth and easy to drive. The transmission is quick; it picks up the pace really well and fast! The ride is smooth and it handles well. The bumps are not a big problem and it is quiet. I also really like the styling of my Cooper. It is for sure the best-looking vehicle in its segment. The body lines are beautiful; the front looks sleek; the back is just as good if not better.
