Tijo Tenson's image

The Iconic MINI has a serious cult following. Its impressive zipping performance in “The Italian Job” left more than a mark on many people's minds. “Mr. Bean’s” ride would have never been so iconic if not for his Green and Black MINI. This British brand has always been an energetic car with its peppy performance, Go-Kart like handling, and breathtaking iconic looks.

Overall Rating

The 2020 MINI Clubman lives up to this hype. It retains the retro looks with a few mandatory modern additions and upgrades. The boring 2.5L engine has been discarded now and the 2.0L pot is the base engine. The split opening barn doors stay which is the trademark of this car.

With the power of 189 horses and 206 pound-feet of pulling force, this car is capable of running across town or cruising on the highway with ease all day long. The driving dynamics of this MINI make it a fun car to drive and drivers stay engaged all throughout. The interior is also well laid out with retro switches around the iconic circular enclosure for the infotainment system.

2020 Mini Clubman Features

MINI offers the Clubman in three distinctive trim levels. Each powered by the same engine, a potent 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 unit. It is offered in two drivetrains, the front-wheel-drive with a 7-speed auto transmission and all-wheel-drive with 8-speed auto transmission.

The all-wheel-drive variant has a slight edge over the front-wheel-drive trim in terms of acceleration and cornering. Otherwise, both configurations have the same power output at 189 horses and 206 pound-feet of torque.

Which MINI should you go for?

We would recommend you bet your money on the Front-wheel drive Signature trim which comes packaged with most of the features and gizmos to cope up with the modern world. With a price tag of $33900 it surely provides the bang for the buck. If your budget persists, then there are a few add-on packages that would help improve the comfort and assist in your driving.

2020 Mini Clubman Engine

Mini has discarded the prodigal 1.5L turbocharged unit and replaced it with the more punchy 2.0L unit. The base engine now produces 189 horses and 206 pound-feet of torque. The power is enough for daily driving but cargo and 5 passengers would make it a bit sluggish.

It is now mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission.

What's under the hood of the iconic MINI Clubman?

The 2.0L Turbo packs more punch than the 1.5L 3 cylinder. The old 6-speed manual and automatic has been discarded too and has now given way to a new smooth 7-speed automatic. It now takes care of power transmission for both the front wheel and all-wheel-drive variants. Steering mounted paddle shifters adds to the driving experience.

Volvo V60 has the most powerful engines of the lot. 250 hp puts it in a league of its own. Subaru comes in last with 182 hp largely due to the added accessories and engine setup.

How quick is the MINI off the line?

The turbocharged unit puts in a bit of excitement. The new transmission helps it propel the MINI much faster than last year’s. It takes just 5.9 seconds to cross 60 MPH. Clubman is no doubt a slow runner and it lags in this traffic. But the various driving modes help relax a bit.

MINI has improved and now ties the 6.9 seconds with the Volvo V60. Subaru again ends the list with 8.7 seconds.

How well does the Clubman handle?

MINI has crafted a beauty when it comes to handling and ride quality. The quick reactive dampers help the vehicle react cautiously thus improving driving dynamics. The firm suspension and anti-roll bars help attack corners with speed and confidence. It feels like a go-kart. There is a minimal play on smooth roads as well with the sensitivities being muffled by the suspension setup.

2020 MINI Cooper Clubman Ride and Handling

The steering is precise and is a perfect fit for a person who demands enthusiasm. The Clubman is agile for a vehicle with this much weight. It is predictable at corners because of the com[act size. This boon also makes it a bit too sensitive as it reacts to minute inputs.

How good is the braking on the Clubman?

The braking is mind-blowing and it stops very well and quick. The brake pedal is small and the transition is smooth for linear braking. Panic braking is also controlled in spite of being sensitive. MINI promises that it will come to stop from 60 MPH in 107 feet which is impressive given the fact that runs on all-season tires.

2020 MINI Cooper Clubman Braking

It uses a Dynamic Stability Control(DSC) in corners which monitors steering input and acceleration to determine the direction you want to go. When the vehicle starts to stray, it applies adequate brake pressure on individual brakes and adjusts the engine torque to maintain the correct line. The transmission also has a stopping mechanism in case of sudden braking which makes an abrupt noise.

The brakes on MINI are designed to have a GRIP. It has the best braking performance in this category with the minimal stoppage distance in this category.

2020 Mini Clubman Fuel Economy

MINI has impressed us by taking care of its shortcomings. Last year, the Clubman has very poor numbers. Now with a combined 30 MPG, it is one of the most fuel-efficient wagons. The new 7-Speed transmission plays an important role in this improvement.

2020 Mini Clubman Interior

Clubman is a family car with a list of creature comforts. It offers practicality and comfort in a mini package that aligns with the brand image. The Clubman manages to make you smile every time you look at it. The iconic design can be found on the inside with the huge circular infotainment display and the flip-style switches underneath it. This shows how MINI incorporates retro into modern innovation. The ambient lighting is adaptive and changes color with the change in drive modes.

How comfortable is the MINI on the inside?

MINI has impressive interior space and legroom in spite of its wacky design. The Clubman manages to squeeze in more legroom in the second row than the Standard Cooper model. The front seats have optional adjustable lumbar and thigh support. It provides ample support for moderately long journeys. But taller individuals might feel uneasy.

All the rivals pitch almost the same amount of passenger space. Subaru manages to be the spacious of the lot as it has the largest dimensions. Volvo is the cramped one as there is no proper space on the inside due to its design.

How quirky is the infotainment system?

The head-turner on the inside is the new 6.5-inch infotainment system which is housed in a circular enclosure. It gets all the latest gizmos to keep up with the latest innovations.

2020 MINI Cooper Clubman Infotainment

Most of the features are in add-on packages which will cost you extra. The Touch Screen Navigation package would be a good add on if you are keen on entertainment and technology.

Infotainment Features

  • 6.5-inch infotainment System
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • USB-C ports

How much cargo can it carry?

MINI provides ample cargo space for a vehicle its size. It also has an optional 60/40 split feature which helps in increasing the cargo space when needed.

2020 Mini Clubman Exterior

MINI stays true to its heritage by still keeping the retro design with a few minimal incremental upgrades. It retains the split swing-out rear doors instead of the upward liftgate. It has definitely sized up in functionality and features but still manages to look as charming as its brothers. MINI is the only retro-designed car in this segment. At 168.5 inches this is a pretty long MINI but that doesn’t hinder the driving dynamics. The swing-out tailgate doors might be funky but it hinders the rear visibility.

2020 Mini Clubman Safety

Safety has not taken a back seat in the Clubman. MINI has not sacrificed any aspects of the body for the retro aesthetics. It has a very rigid body which reduces body torque and helps in the Go-Kart type handling. It also has 8 airbags including curtain airbags and also includes various other features as well.

Safety Features

  • Theft Detection Radio
  • Ignition disable
  • In-Vehicle Assistance Service
  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Seat belt pretensioners
  • Cornering Lights
  • Lane Departure
  • Low Tire Pressure Warning System
  • Panic Alarm

2020 Mini Clubman Competition

Subaru Outback

Subaru Outback is a very worthy contender and a decent alternative for the MINI Clubman. Both are closely priced as well. Subaru has the largest cargo space in the segment and also comes with a spacious cabin laden with loads of standard features. The well-tuned suspension makes it a comfortable ride. It also has semi-autonomous driving technology. Handling suffers a bit as its not as precise as the MINI and neither is the performance. But overall Subaru Outback is a good bargain and we would weigh towards it too.

2020 Subaru Outback

Volvo V60

Volvo is a premium wagon with a premium price tag. It is almost $10000 more than the MINI. The extra money bags you a more powerful engine and top of the line safety features. The seating is marginally better than the MINI. Now the question is that is Volvo V60 worth the $10000 upgrade? We would find it hard, as the MINI delivers battery for the price. MINI would be our choice as there is no questioning its bang for buck perspective.

2020 Volvo V60

2020 Mini Clubman Final Verdict

MINI has stayed true to its heritage and delivered a no-nonsense car that is adequately powered and handles like a Go-Kart. There is enough tech on the inside to keep up with the world. Safety has also been souped up which makes the MINI Clubman a pretty desirable car. But the Subaru Outback offers much more from the same price point. It has more interior storage and even gets a semi-autonomous driving mode which is impressive. So we would bet our money on the Jap. The MINI should be your choice only if you simply love a MINI. its quirky looks and the impressive Go-Kart handling.
