2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter diesel Passenger Van Buying Advice

No doubt, the Mercedes-Benz diesel Sprinter Passenger Van is the most luxurious commercial van that exists in the market. We recommend going for the 2500 trim with 12 passengers seating capacity and a high roof for an airy feel in the cabin. Apart from the grunty six-cylinder diesel engine, this model also adds a better payload capacity. The $994 Driver Convenience package and the $1,966 Premium Plus package are definitely worth upgrading for better safety and technological features. Optional four-wheel-drive allows the Sprinter to get to places other vans can't- TrueCar

The 2021 Mercedes Sprinter diesel Passenger Van gets two engine options. The first one is a 2.0L turbo-diesel inline-4 engine that makes 161 hp and 266 lb-ft. of torque. The other one is a 3.0L turbo-diesel V6 engine that increases the power outputs to 181 hp 325 lb-ft. of torque. Both these engines are paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission while RWD configuration is standard. Mercedes-Benz also offers a 4x4 system exclusively to the short-wheelbase models when equipped with a V6 diesel engine.

2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter diesel Passenger Van has 2.0L engine

When you are driving a big vehicle, you need to have some confidence and the 2021 Sprinter delivers it. The steering is the right amount of heavy and is well-balanced. The Sprinter sails around corners with loads of grip and has that nice secure feeling on the road which is really important. On the motorway, it just eats up the miles in fantastic comfort. You'll find the suspension to be really supple in the Sprinter as well. It's really good at soaking up the craters and potholes that this van will inevitably slam into on broken roads.

Commercial vehicles are not very speedy vehicles and the Sprinter is no different. It takes 11.6 seconds to cover the 0-60 MPH distance while a quarter of a mile is finished in 18.3 seconds with a top speed of 100 MPH. The Sprinter's acceleration is slow but is capable and speedy enough to complete the daily chores efficiently and effectively. Speaking of brakes, the 2021 Sprinter's front wheels are fitted with 11.2-inch rotors while the rear wheels get 10.7-inch rotors. The van takes 134 feet of braking distance to halt from 60-0 MPH.

Due to its classification as a van, the EPA doesn't offer any official gas mileage figures- Carbuzz

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter diesel Passenger Van is categorized under large transportation vehicles and hence, EPA has not rated the vehicle for its fuel economy. However, large vehicles like passenger vans are said to give a satisfactory fuel economy. It is expected that the 2021 Sprinter diesel Passenger would return a combined mileage of somewhere between 15-19 MPG.

The 2021 Sprinter diesel Passenger Van is fitted with a 24.5-gallon fuel tank, which is smaller than its rivals. This will result in delivering a lesser city, highway, and combined driving range than its competitors. In case, if its mileage falls between 15-19 MPG, it can deliver a combined driving range somewhere between 367 and 441 miles. For a passenger van, it is more than enough.

Two reasons the 2021 Mercedes Sprinter is so popular are its comfort and refinement- CarAndDriver

Step inside the 2021 Mercedes-Benz diesel Sprinter Passenger Van and you will find a really hardy yet luxurious durable cabin with plenty of storage and practicality. The Sprinter comes standard as a 12-seater but you can increase up to 15 seats by opting for a long-wheelbase model. The seats are covered in cloth and boast extreme comfort and support levels. Upfront, the headroom offered is the best in its class while the legroom is generous for adults.  Drivers will find plenty of adjustment in the seat and steering wheel to ensure that can get comfortable. Large sliding doors help the passengers aboard the vehicle pretty easily.

Mercedes-Benz also offers an option of an electric sliding door with a soft-closing function on the right side. The 2021 Sprinter diesel Passenger Van is available with two wheelbase options- a 144-inch and a 177-inch. The short-wheelbase model offers adequate legroom for adults. But if that feels less for you, you can order for a long-wheelbase model, that feels spacious like a limousine. The 2021 Sprinter also excels in cargo capacity. The short-wheelbase model offers 78.6 cu-ft. behind the rear seats and it enlarges to 111.2 cu-ft. in the long-wheelbase model. That's a lot of space to carry things for your family picnic.

Obviously, due to the high roof height, the Sprinter has more headroom than the GM siblings. On the other hand, standard cargo capacity is the best in the GM siblings with 92.1 cu-ft. However, it cannot match the comfort and luxury that Mercedes-Benz has to offer. The 2021 Sprinter offers the barest of technological features as standard. You get a small LCD screen that supports Bluetooth and AM/FM radio but you can upgrade it to a 7-inch screen with a navigation system and a satellite radio.

2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter diesel Passenger Van infotainment screen

The large screen does a fair job with decent graphics and better visibility compared to the smaller screen. Technology freaks can opt for the $1,966 Premium Plus package that adds a 10.25-inch MBUX infotainment system with a navigation system, wireless charging, and map updates for 3 years. Speaking of the sound system, you get a total of 13 speakers as standard. You also get few physical buttons placed below the screen for audio and climate settings. Some other infotainment and interior features are:

  • Tilt & telescopic multi-function steering wheel
  • 4-way manually adjustable front cloth seats
  • 12V rear outlet
  • Optional 7-inch infotainment screen
  • 13-speaker sound system
  • Bluetooth connectivity

Tall, somewhat narrow vans are the European way- Kelly Blue Book

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz diesel Sprinter Passenger Van wears a typical boxy look. Upfront, you have a big, blunt upright grille that proudly displays the three-pointed stars to the buyers. A set of rakish headlights sit atop and the relatively upright windscreen is joined by the stubby proportions of the bonnet. The Sprinter sits quite lower to the ground than its rivals. Its 7.9-inch low ground clearance can benefit from better handling on the road.

With an overall length, width, and height of  233.5 inches, 79.5 inches, and 114.2 inches, the Sprinter turns out to be the largest vehicle in the Mercedes’ lot. The 2021 Sprinter gets 16-inch alloy wheels as standard and doesn't get any wheel options. From the side view, the 2021 Sprinter isn't totally slab-sided. There are a few character lines that run down its length along with the extended black trim that helps break the general scale of the vehicle. At the back, the design is just basic.

The GM siblings' wheelbase is 9 inches shorter than the Sprinter which clearly explains how spacious the sprinter is from the inside. However, the high ground clearance of the GM siblings can prevent its underbelly from getting scrapped due to the high bumps on the road. Their overall and height also fall short in front of the Sprinter. Some other exterior features of the Sprinter are mentioned below:

2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter diesel Passenger Van Safety

Majority of safety systems offered are optional- CarAndDriver

Due to its van disguise, both NHTSA and IIHS didn't find the need to crash-test the 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter diesel Passenger Van. This is quite amusing as the vehicle that can carry up to 15 passengers is not tested for its safety. However, trusting the notoriety of the brand, it is safe to assume the 2021 Sprinter diesel Passenger Van may be a safe van.

The 2021 Sprinter diesel Passenger Van comes with longitudinal member reinforcement to protect its passengers in case of a side crash. Being a 15 human transporter, the 2021 Sprinter diesel Passenger Van does come with a good list of highly advanced safety features that makes the van quite trustworthy. Some of the standout safety features are as follows:

  • Crosswind Assist
  • Attention Assist
  • Active Distance Assist

2021 Mercedes Sprinter diesel Passenger Van vs 2021 Chevrolet Express diesel Passenger Van

Priced at $41,195, the Chevrolet Express diesel Passenger Van costs nearly $6,000 less than the Sprinter diesel Passenger Van. Its turbo-diesel engine makes 20 hp more than the Sprinter but the latter's 0-60 timings are much better. The MPG figures of both vans are not available but it is for sure that the Express will have a good driving range owing to its large fuel tank. Coming to the interior, the Express's cabin lacks enough headroom, luxury quotient, and comfort features than the Sprinter. Also, the list of driver aids offered is also less compared to the Sprinter.

2021 Mercedes Sprinter diesel Passenger Van vs 2021 GMC Savana diesel Passenger Van

The GMC Savana diesel Passenger Van is identical to the Express except for the badges on the front and back and steering wheel. This means that its on-road performance, fuel economy, interior dimensions, cargo capacity, and safety features are shared with the Express. This suggests that the Savana also lacks the opulence, build quality, and interior room that the Sprinter offers. That said, the front-end styling of the Savana is a bit different from the Express but it's no match to the styling of the Sprinter.

2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter diesel Passenger Van Final Verdict

Coming to the conclusion, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz diesel Sprinter Passenger Van has a great engine. Although it is a little smaller one as compared to its rivals, but is efficient for daily chores. The speed is again no problem if you take this one for everyday activities. The interior is unbeatable, the space is huge and the technical features are amazing. The exterior is boxy making it just one of its kind. The long list of safety features makes it highly trustworthy. The cost is just one thing that holds you back from getting it.
